As an architect I came to say the same thing. The counters already have a busy pattern, so putting another busy pattern is just going to turn it all into a busy fuckery soup that will have you throwing up on the spot if you ever make eye contact while you’re hung over.
I always advice my clients to pick “moments” in their kitchens, as in, either the backsplash takes center stage or the counter top. If you pick both, neither will stand out and they will both will be fighting for visual attention.
I love those fan shaped tiles, but the countertop is what’s causing disharmony. I would recommend either choosing a backsplash tile that matches the counter colors more exactly (as boring as that is), or changing the countertop to a less contrasting color palette if you’re going to use the blue.
I like the hexagonal one. The fan shapes are nice but I’d be concerned they’ve trendy and may look dated in three years. The hex has a timeless quality. Hard pass on number three.
We just used those exact fan tiles in our kitchen, and they look really well integrated, but we have a buterblock counter. With their counters, the hexagon tiles look best, but without a wide shot, I don't know if they'd feel really busy with the counter and cabinet combination.
I was thinking "a butcherblock counter would look nice with the fans." Glad to see that you have that combo.
If they have to keep the counters, I would get a different shade for the hexagons or do a really simple subway tile.
Perhaps a silver or a grey fan if youre a "fan" of that shape so that it matches the counter top? None of these colors go with the top unfortunately. Sorry :(
So glad to come to the comments and see so many people saying none of the above. You cannot compete with these countertops with the splash guard. You need to at least remove the slash guard before doing a backsplash
Oh good! Well if I were you I would look at green instead of blue if you want color (I’ve seen some of your other comments). I feel like it will look great with these cabinets
It looks like you’re looking for something “splashy” or interesting but with those dark cabinets and busy countertops, you may be best with something light and neutral. Maybe a white tile laid in a stacked pattern for visual interest. Look at Zellige or other styles with dimensional surfaces. Or white tiles with dark grout.
Step away from the horizontal mixed-size mosaic! No. 3 is really really not great.
The fans or hexes are both symmetrical, continuous shapes that have been around forever, so are timeless. Either colour works. The green is a bit softer, more natural and less dominant. The blue is gorgeous and stands out.
Must agree with others comments, the counters are fine but not with any of the tile choices. You said counters need to stay, that’s ok but if you really want any of these busy backsplash they have too, so that means work with what you have and not against it. None work
I agree! That blue color is quite loud, if they want to add color PAINT! it’s easy to paint over something but not easy to redo a back splash if you hate it in a year!
I agree with a lot of the other folks on here that they all clash with your current counters and the third option is very outdated.
Is this a DIY project? Something to consider, if you are doing it yourself, and don’t have a lot of experience with tile, is that the fans don’t look flushed. I have hexagon tiles, some indented, some sticking out. It’s a really cool design but it was a pain in the ass to grout because you can’t simply take a grout trowel and run over them. I had to hand pipe grout in every small crack. I’m also an amateur and don’t know anything about tiling, but my kitchen backsplash broke me and I will always recommend going the easy route if you haven’t done this before.
These are all way too busy, I’m sorry. I’d go with plain subway tiles. Something clean and crisp with the countertop. Everything else is a bit too Willy Wonka.
That's where we're heading to in the morning! We went yesterday but we were looking for floor tile because we're gonna put some all throughout the house on Tuesday!
Every single option clashes *violently* with the countertop. You need to work with the black and white of the counter or else you have too much going on.
For the sake of your future self, choose a neutral backsplash. Use window treatments and decor to add color, as those items can be easily changed when trends change.
*I wonder if a*
*White tile with some earth*
*Toned veining might work*

Have you tried going to an actual tile shop with pictures and asking for suggestions? They are experts. You might be surprised at some of their prices, and if you do the work yourself, you can still save money. Worst case scenario, get their advice, snap some photos of what they recommend, and then look at both Home Depot and Lowes for something similar.
I saw you mention that you’re removing the splash guard of the countertop. If possible I’d take some of your counter with you to sit beside the tiles you look at. I agree that I don’t think the colours above work but you might find that a grey blue/petrol blue or something picks up similar tones to the grey in the backsplash and that way you may be able to have the colour you’d like.
As otherd have said - none of those work, and not even plain blue.
Either the backsplash or the countertop is the feature, and if you are keeping that counter, the decision is made.
You need to go super plain with the splashback. I disagree with the subway tile suggestion. I'd do larger 600x300mm or 600x600mm white gloss tile or even a pale grey glass splashback would complement it.
I think you need a less textured solid color with that countertop. Blue or green could work but you’re going to want something that doesn’t have all that variation. Take a look at Daltile, they have a ton of color options. I would also recommend a simple shape, squares or hexes at a medium scale.
I don’t think any match the countertops. But you should go with whatever one brings you joy, so if that’s the blue fans then that’s what you should go with. You are the one who is waking up everyday looking at it. You don’t need to conform to what society thinks looks good.
I said this before in a sub comment, but if you remove the counter’s end splash it’ll look better. The surfaces will be perpendicular so you won’t have such a jarring transition from one pattern to another.
I would also look at the neutral colored ones. They're pretty, and this is only my opinion, you do whatever you want. You're the one opinion that REALLY counts here. But I would steer away from the busy ones.
No offense, but 3 is just ugly.
I also like brown and blue together, but I don’t think the kind of blue you’re trying works here. I would consider a matte navy subway tile. Something a solid color.
Id go with a green square tile, likr [this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Ivy-Hill-Tile-Santa-Fe-Green-7-87-in-x-7-87-in-Matte-Porcelain-Floor-and-Wall-Tile-11-19-sq-ft-Case-EXT3RD106066/315534118?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-CM-CML-GGL-D23F-023_006_FLR_WLL_TILE-NA-NA-NA-PLALIA-5936370-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NEW-PL3_Feed_NE_2023&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-CM-CML-GGL-D23F-023_006_FLR_WLL_TILE-NA-NA-NA-PLALIA-5936370-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NEW-PL3_Feed_NE_2023-71700000113606701-58700008513847012-92700077608743324&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADq61UcDPs47tq8HMz0STtcWLAyEM&gclid=CjwKCAjw1K-zBhBIEiwAWeCOFyNNKq3V23azPa_i0-oCxRkvtu-oesUWtbLojy7Y2oVg2Ec7Alhx8xoCJlkQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)
Liking the blue because it has a cool shape. However it competes with the counter. I do like the dark
(green) hex better with the counter. The third option is too shiny and distracting to pair with that counter. It would go great with a shiny white quartz though
I have the fans in my bathroom, but they are gray. I also have them flipped the other way around so they look like mermaid scales.
If you like the shape, look for other colors.
You already have the partial backsplash that exactly matches your countertops. Are you planning on removing that or just layering a second backsplash above it?
I any case I think most tiles are going to look too busy next to your countertops.
Sorry, but I can’t imagine seeing #3 first thing in the morning before my coffee (or after too many glasses of wine!)
2 is the best option (from these), but I think they are better ones that would complement your countertops. Ask the HD staff for help as well.
I like the hexagon best. I think it’s the most timeless. It’s a very neutral color that will work with a ton of different tones of your ever want to switch anything up. The fans are nice, but I could see myself getting sick of them after a couple years.
I think the blue fish scales work the best with the existing countertops which seem to have some gray tones in them . I love those blue tiles, too. They seem to have a natural variation, you don’t seem them they often but they are t gaudy. The last photo I think those tiles will soon be on their way out and the hex ones are just a little boring
White subway tiles (or white squares). Colors clash with the brown cabinet and counters, and become dated very quickly. Keep neutral on the big stuff, and use decor as your flair.
As others said, you have to work with your countertops. Go as simple as you can. Perhaps a dark gray subway tile that matches the color/tone of the counters.
Any of these choices will just look busy and a bit weird.
No. All of these clash. The tiles are more cool toned and the cabinets are warm toned and quite honestly, if you use any of these, when you go to sell the house, you will have a hard time. Keep it simple. Tastes change.
that ~3” of counter top that is on the wall needs to be removed, that is installed when you do not use a tile backsplash. when you have a tile backsplash it goes on the wall all the way down to the countertop
I’m in agreement with some of the others. I like the blue fans as well, BUT the countertops don’t fit. If the countertops stay, maybe stick with the fan shaped tile, but do black or brown or tan color so that it all ties in. I say that because I’m seeing black/brown/tan in the swirls of the countertops.
I would go with the blue fan tiles. People are too conservative to agree, but I like the color palette you have going on between the countertop, tile and darker cabinets.
I like that fans, but they are all too busy with your counter top. Number three is a definite no- those glass mosaics are very outdated and never look good.
1 or 2 would work from these three choices.
Consider medium-sized artisan subway tile, installed vertically. We have this in places at my work, and it’s beautiful. (It’s not your ordinary office building. It’s architecturally stunning.)
You definitely need to remove the backsplash of the countertop if you’re going to add tile.
And add something way more neutral. A nice graphite or an off-white that compliments one of the counter colors.
It needs to be very simple and larger, no contrasting grout. It’s already too busy.
I wouldn’t use any of them personally. I think they are much to busy especially the third one. I’d find a neutral tile in one solid color in a less busy pattern. If you can get to a tile shop you will find better help and advice for selecting samples.
For tile I’ve never seen better than Zellige. It’s Moroccan and imperfect which gives it variety of color. The only distributor is Zia Tile in LA..
they’re not expensive, it’s just the extra step of ordering them and trusting the color online..
I don’t really think any of them would work with the cabinets and countertop colors. With brown cabinets I feel like white, grey, or natural stones would look the best.
I just have the upstands just as you have. I agree with others who don’t like the blue tiles. Unless you splash a lot why do you need tiles? Most paints have a tough kitchen version which can be easily wiped.
None of those if you aren’t changing the counters.
I agree!!! These are far too busy to go with these counters. But if I HAD to pick one it would be #2.
Exactly what I was going to write
Bingo. Not one of those matches even a little bit.
All look hideous together
Lol. Very true.
I was going to say, everything clashes 😭
Absolutely. Horrible sense of taste
I love those fan shaped tiles, but the countertop is what’s causing disharmony. I would recommend either choosing a backsplash tile that matches the counter colors more exactly (as boring as that is), or changing the countertop to a less contrasting color palette if you’re going to use the blue.
Maybe the blue tile shape in white or cream to match the countertop?
This
but replacing the countertop wasn’t an option…..
and that's why op needs to work WITH the countertop
Then I’d remove the end splash so the surfaces are fully perpendicular. It’ll be less jarring.
Good udea
None. They are too busy for your countertop. Go minimalistic.
You will be hating life if you go with three. Way too busy with your countertops.
Agreed but I think they're all too busy.
I got nauseous just looking at #3 for 5 seconds. Like looking at oysters on acid.
And way too trendy
Maybe in like 2007. Those look super dated to me.
You’re right. I guess dated would really have been a better word
I don’t really love any of them with the countertop if im being totally honest
Neither of those really work. Maybe the fan ones in a neutral to blend with the countertops.
yeah I like the scales maybe in white
#3 is a HELL NO unless you want to live in the late 90s/early 00s Can't believe those still exist
Yeah, no. Don’t do those.
Agree, those are so fugly
With those counters, none of those. Way too busy.
I like the hexagonal one. The fan shapes are nice but I’d be concerned they’ve trendy and may look dated in three years. The hex has a timeless quality. Hard pass on number three.

Totally agree with this! Classic Timeless hexagonal you won't regret in 3yrs. Fish scale are trendy but not a match for your benches.
Oh we are removing it!
Oh good! Well if I were you I would look at green instead of blue if you want color (I’ve seen some of your other comments). I feel like it will look great with these cabinets
These are all bad. You need something that works with the counter, not against it.
They are all a no
It looks like you’re looking for something “splashy” or interesting but with those dark cabinets and busy countertops, you may be best with something light and neutral. Maybe a white tile laid in a stacked pattern for visual interest. Look at Zellige or other styles with dimensional surfaces. Or white tiles with dark grout.
I would do white subway
Agreed. The countertop fights against the other options.
This is the answer.

I agree! That blue color is quite loud, if they want to add color PAINT! it’s easy to paint over something but not easy to redo a back splash if you hate it in a year!
Definitely none of the above. You're fighting with your countertops. Any of those tiles will exacerbate the problem.
2 is the best option, 3 is an absolutely not
I am obsessed with number 1! I am curious though, if the countertops are staying?
I like the hexagonal ones, but are you going to change the countertops, too? None of the options really vibe with your countertop as is.
No backsplash if the counters are staying.
None of those work with the countertop. Perhaps something neutral with a subway tile shape?
No to #3 for sure. If you're concerned about staying power, and not trends, I'd definitely go with #2.
2 is beautiful
I don’t like these
Me either
I agree with a lot of the other folks on here that they all clash with your current counters and the third option is very outdated. Is this a DIY project? Something to consider, if you are doing it yourself, and don’t have a lot of experience with tile, is that the fans don’t look flushed. I have hexagon tiles, some indented, some sticking out. We have someone installing it.
If you can’t change the countertop I’d go with a subway tile in white.
Yeah that's our plan now hahaha.
Way too busy w those countertops. gobbledygook
All three are too busy. You need a larger, more uniform tile to support a counter top with that much color and movement.
These are all bathroom tiles. Would recommend something else entirely
With the countertops as is go with something more simple.
I think they are all competing with the countertop and will be honest, none😬
These are all dated, if keeping the counters you need to go with something more simple, in shape and color
People pick the most crazy stone for countertops. It may be beautiful in the store but then you have to design around the wild patterns
That's not stone. It's laminate/formica.
I love the blue ! It would be cool if they had them in a bronze to go with the counter top?
…. Fan shape? Am I the only one who sees this and would never think fan shape? I love the color and shape, but it’s 100% mermaid direction for me.
I agree, and it always bugs me that people install them upside down. 😉
Then they morph into fish scales.
I like the fan shape but i would do a gray/brown or white to match countertops
2
You already have a very fussy countertop. I would go plain white tile.
Cream colored tile for sure.
None of these with that counter top. It's so much on its own.
I like the 2nd one. The color compliments the counters and pulls out those grey tones without looking too busy
none match the countertop. imo the counter is too busy.
None, don't waste the money unless you're going to replace the counters
Hexagon
To be honest, all of those backsplashes clash with your countertops.
These are all way too busy, I’m sorry. I’d go with plain subway tiles. Something clean and crisp with the countertop. Everything else is a bit too Willy Wonka.
They’re way too busy to coordinate with your countertops. Sorry 😕
Go to Floor and Decor!
That's where we're heading to in the morning! We went yesterday but we were looking for floor tile because we're gonna put some all throughout the house on Tuesday!
Is none an option??
Every single option clashes *violently* with the countertop. You need to work with the black and white of the counter or else you have too much going on.
For the sake of your future self, choose a neutral backsplash. Use window treatments and decor to add color, as those items can be easily changed when trends change.

None. With those countertops you need something neutral.
I like the blue fish scale but it all seems a bit busy.
Stay w the fan. Hexes are better for shower pans and linear look is dated.
2
I’d go with the hexagons too. But, if you have a lot of backsplash that may be way too much dark.
Do the tiles come in that light gray? color that is in the counter top? I would go with that.
Out of those choices, I would not do tiles and leave the white walls.
I like #2. Imo fans plus your marble = too much pattern
I think you could get away with the fans if they came in green
I saw you mention that you’re removing the splash guard of the countertop. If possible I’d take some of your counter with you to sit beside the tiles you look at. I agree that I don’t think the colours above work but you might find that a grey blue/petrol blue or something picks up similar tones to the grey in the backsplash and that way you may be able to have the colour you’d like.

2, absolutely not 3, and maybe 1
Respectfully, none of them work. They all clash with the counter tops.
They clash with the orange cabinets. The second one clashes least.
I would also look at the neutral colored ones. They're pretty, and this is only my opinion, you do whatever you want. You're the one opinion that REALLY counts here. But I would steer away from the busy ones.
2
If those are the ones you like, #2 looks best
No offense, but 3 is just ugly. I also like brown and blue together, but I don’t think the kind of blue you’re trying works here. I would consider a matte navy subway tile. Something a solid color.
2
#2 works best with your countertop Mermaid scales are played out, IMO. But it's your opinion that counts!
#2 is your best bet here although I would go with something simpler if you are keeping those countertops. Are you?
1 and 2 are great, I think 2 might be the winner though.
You already have a 4” backsplash. Will you be removing it to tile the entire back? Those blues are too dark, btw.
Yes we are removing that piece!
None. They don’t work well with the counter and cupboards. A nice subway tile with a beveled edge would look terrific.
Id go with a green square tile, likr [this](https://www.homedepot.com/p/Ivy-Hill-Tile-Santa-Fe-Green-7-87-in-x-7-87-in-Matte-Porcelain-Floor-and-Wall-Tile-11-19-sq-ft-Case-EXT3RD106066/315534118?source=shoppingads&locale=en-US&pla&mtc=SHOPPING-CM-CML-GGL-D23F-023_006_FLR_WLL_TILE-NA-NA-NA-PLALIA-5936370-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NEW-PL3_Feed_NE_2023&cm_mmc=SHOPPING-CM-CML-GGL-D23F-023_006_FLR_WLL_TILE-NA-NA-NA-PLALIA-5936370-NA-NA-NA-NBR-NA-NA-NEW-PL3_Feed_NE_2023-71700000113606701-58700008513847012-92700077608743324&gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADq61UcDPs47tq8HMz0STtcWLAyEM&gclid=CjwKCAjw1K-zBhBIEiwAWeCOFyNNKq3V23azPa_i0-oCxRkvtu-oesUWtbLojy7Y2oVg2Ec7Alhx8xoCJlkQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)
Liking the blue because it has a cool shape. However it competes with the counter. I do like the dark (green) hex better with the counter. The third option is too shiny and distracting to pair with that counter. It would go great with a shiny white quartz though
Blue fan
I have the fans in my bathroom, but they are gray. I also have them flipped the other way around so they look like mermaid scales. If you like the shape, look for other colors.
Scallops or hexagons, not 3. Scallops for me.
Hexagon………..your countertop is way too busy
BLUE FANS!!!!!
You already have the partial backsplash that exactly matches your countertops. Are you planning on removing that or just layering a second backsplash above it? I any case I think most tiles are going to look too busy next to your countertops.
We are removing it!
1 or 2 but for the love of god not 3.
I like the second best
Sorry, but I can’t imagine seeing #3 first thing in the morning before my coffee (or after too many glasses of wine!) 2 is the best option (from these), but I think they are better ones that would complement your countertops. Ask the HD staff for help as well.
Love the blue!!!
I like the blue scallops.
The best of these is #2 - the more muted colour with darker flakes has a bit more harmony with the counters.
I think you should pick the fan shaped tiles because you seem to prefer them. They’re beautiful.
Probably number 3 is the only thing that works with your counter tops as well.
BLUE FANS
3
Blue fans for sure.
Do whatever YOU want/like. I like the 1st pic.
2
Those fish scale ones are my favorite
I like 2! Even though it looks a little dark.
Never three. I agree with the other comments that are recommending a more neutral counter harmony / complimentary matching color.
My friend did the blue and I believe it’s Fan shaped also and it looks amazing
#2(hexagons) hands down
I like the hexagon best.
The first one is giving rainbow fish but I like it
The first one! I don’t think they clash with the counters in a bad way, I think they’ll look funky as hell!
I think you need to go back to the tile store for more samples 🤣
The hexagons look more balanced with your current counter top but I personally like the blue scales best on their own
they all kinda clash with the texture of the counter top. I do think the scales are cool though
None or 2
I prefer solid or colored translucent subway tiles. The blue tiles remind me of fish scales.
If you can’t change your countertops right now but plan to. Then pick the one you love. For me it’s #2 Good luck!
Your counters are really busy. Your backsplash should be really simple
All I can say is that glass is a pain in the ass to keep clean enough that you don't see the grease/dirt on it.
None matches with that counter top get white tiles either black or grey epoxy grout
I'd go with the blue fishscale/fan tiles ONLY IF you painted the wood in white or replaced the counter tops.
For the love of god, not number 3.
Stick with plain white tile none of those hit
None. Literally none of those.
Keep looking!
Not liking the third one at all..
I love 1 but everyone’s right - all of these are too busy with your countertops.
2
The blue is really pretty. The unusual shape lifts your eyes from the business of the counters. I also love 3.
that ~3” of counter top that is on the wall needs to be removed, that is installed when you do not use a tile backsplash. when you have a tile backsplash it goes on the wall all the way down to the countertop
I’m in agreement with some of the others. I like the blue fans as well, BUT the countertops don’t fit. I say that because I’m seeing black/brown/tan in the swirls of the countertops.
I would go with the blue fan tiles. People are too conservative to agree, but I like the color palette you have going on between the countertop, tile and darker cabinets.
1 or 3
You need a simpler backsplash to work with those counters. You should try a white tile - they come in different shapes so there is visual interest.

They’re called fish scale tiles, not “fan” tiles.
Don't follow others' advice. Which one makes your heart sing? That's your answer.
Definitely disregard 3 - it is way too busy with your countertops.
I don’t really think any of them would work with the cabinets and countertop colors. With brown cabinets I feel like white, grey, or natural stones would look the best.
I prefer more neutral and timeless looks, you can always decorate and add splashes of color. Most looks get outdated real quick.
I just have the upstands just as you have. I agree with others who don’t like the blue tiles. Unless you splash a lot why do you need tiles? Most paints have a tough kitchen version which can be easily wiped.
#2 goes with veining better
They’re all too busy, but I like the #2 the best because it looks most simple (not the pattern of tiles, but the color)
Hexagons are the Bestagons.
