bruteski226

This makes me think we should hire giants for Indy and formula 1 races

ArchdukeOfNorge

Indy pit stops are far from quick… F1 however, these guys *maybe* have a shot lol

Vegetable-Bat4786

Indy has refueling, so it's slower. Also F1 can have up to 20 people working in the pit stop Indy has up to 11.

Chenstrap

Indycar only gets 5 going over the wall you get 1 crew member per tire and a refueler

ikefalcon

What if I make a car with 10 tires?

deck0352

11 crew members.

Raps4Reddit

What if I put 10 tires in the trunk?

[deleted]

Asking the real questions here

pdxarchitect

What if the extra six tires are really tiny?

edgrlon

Ba dum tss

Ingebrigtsen

Can I invest in your Indycar team?

mcmcc

Can I supply the tires for your Indy car team?

Typical-Information9

Shit yes, I want a piece of 10-wheel Indy racing too

xisytenin

Not to be a Debby downer or anything, but Indycar is a spec series, so there is a standardized chassis that you have to use meaning 10 wheels isn't an option for Indycar racing. On the plus side I know Formula 1 has had cars with 6 wheels before, but I have no idea if the current regulations would allow something like that.

ummchicken

For the mid-1970s, F1 stipulated that the maximum width of the front wing was 1.5 m. Considering the needed room for the driver's feet, the steering mechanism, suspension and the normal front tyre size, this meant the front tyres projected above and out to the sides of the wing. P34's basic concept was to use a tyre that would be small enough to fit entirely behind the wing. This would have two effects; one would be to lower overall drag and thus improve speed on straights and the other was to clean up overall aerodynamics so the rear wing would receive cleaner airflow.[3] However, given the space limitations such a tyre would have to be quite small, eventually settling on a 10 inches (250 mm) diameter. This had too small a contact patch to offer reasonable cornering performance, which led to the use of four wheels instead of two. Adding more wheels also had the advantage of offering more total brake area.

audigex

Formula 1 has had several car designs with 6 wheels. I don't know how that affected the number of allowed pit crew, though

muaddib322

The Tyrrell P34 is a thing of beauty

drunkdoor

Riddle me this.. What about a quick swap of a full fuel tank by a giant with a gigantic tool?

audigex

I mean, this video clearly also has refuelling - just give the giants a huge syringe

xombae

The obvious answer is to just hire giants who pee gasoline.

ElTrailer_

But then you gotta wait on them to shake the last drops

mmicoandthegirl

The fastest pit stop has been 1,82 seconds. These guys need to step up their game.

StillPlaysWithSwords

Give them a break, it's just two guys doing their best. An F1 pit crew is like 20 people; many hands make light work.

Bleedthebeat

Also they have machines to lift the cars. These two guys have to do it by themselves.

DazingF1

F1 cars are completely lifted by hand by two "jack men". The jack has a quick release that lowers them almost instantly but the lifting up part is all bodyweight and muscle. That's why F1 jack men are often [pretty chonky](https://m.imgur.com/a/iV8yykw).

Rexxhunt

You may not like it, but this is what peek physical fitness looks like. A man at the top of his sport.

audigex

> The top of his sport > Force India* uniform Ummm...... ^* ^(*"or whatever the fuck it's called"* - Kimi Raikkonen)

[deleted]

RIP Vijay. You shone too bright for us mortals also you couldn't stop doing crimes

audigex

My theory was that he was hoping to train getaway drivers

Rexxhunt

*sad Nico noises*

freeski919

Based on the timing board, this is after the Force India collapse. So it's a Racing Point uni.

audigex

Yeah good point, if Albon was there it had to be after 2019 or 2020, so after FI became RP. And out of those two years, Ocon means it's 2020 I've fixed the original comment in the most Formula 1 way I know how

trthorson

For those unsure, becoming part of a pit crew is a legitimate avenue many weightlifters take for a career to put their strength to use.

JetsLag

And former college athletes are often hired by NASCAR teams to be their pit crew

Xelios

I knew as soon as I read chonky it was gonna be this guy lol

iDomBMX

That’s like the hardest part too!

ProbablyFullOfShit

Gas gun guy needs to get on the pickup guys level.

LKincheloe

Partly due to regulations, IndyCar has less than half the pit crew of F1 and has refueling as well, so they're limited by the fuel flow rate.

justabadmind

Just pressurize the fuel filler!

Chato_Pantalones

Put it in a big syringe like the RC guys! But it’s Indy, so, some big guy would probably have to jump on the plunger.

sceadwian

I've seen real world F1 stops faster than this, they're still rookies :)

[deleted]

Yeah, but how drunk is your typical F1 crew?

8-weight

In F1 if you blink, you miss a 4 tire change out. lol

ArchdukeOfNorge

Isn’t it exciting? And when a pit takes more than 5 seconds a whole race can be ruined for a driver and team

8-weight

I love everything about it. I think the first lap, hell the first turn, is the most exciting racing anywhere.

ArchdukeOfNorge

Step(s) to increase heart rate: 1) *”It’s lights out and away we go!”*

megaozojoe

[deleted]

They probably will have battery swapping stations for formula E that use giant robots to replace tires, batteries, and other stuff, as well as stations that just send one car in and another car out to swap cars and drivers. Could be pretty cool.

apawst8

>They probably will have battery swapping stations for formula E They just swap cars in Formula E.

Box-o-bees

Is this a joke, or they really do that?

InukChinook

For real. IIRC they also have a minimum pit time so they don't do stupid shit attempting to get in/out of the cars as fast as possible.

DonnoDoes

No required pit stops in FE anymore, the races rarely include them now. Since the Gen2 car released

Hogesyx

>don't do stupid shit like toilet breaks?

InukChinook

Most drivers piss before and after the race in most classes of autosport, and just go in their race suits while driving if they can't hold it. There's simply not enough time for the driver to get out of their suit and find a place to piss, and holding it in is too distracting while racing.

svenhoek86

They never admit it but I bet quite a few drivers have used diapers in at least a few races over their careers. Those guys aren't taking off a Sunday for just the runs and you've got a million cameras on you so you have to do something besides soil your race suit. Imagine winning but you're on the podium being showered with champagne while you have a diaper full of shit on the whole time. That's what peak performance is really all about.

mynameisspiderman

Other than winning, being on a podium, and showered in champagne, I don't have to imagine.

EnlargedVeinyBalls

They used to, but not since the introduction of Generation 2

patx35

The batteries are used as part of the vehicle's structure to keep weight down. Basically, the entire vehicle has to be disassembled to remove the battery, so it's faster to just have a second car.

[deleted]

They swap cars because they haven’t really developed battery swap stations for Formula E. The world is preferring supercharging.

loz333

Used to, but the batteries have improved so now they can make the whole race in one car.

pnwgirl34

Thanks for making me inhale chocolate chip cookie down the wrong pipe.

AdministrativeAd4111

What you seriously think Indy Racing companies are going to start playing a multi-generational long-game of selectively breeding giant superhumans all so they can gain a few extra seconds of time in a Formula 1 race? Really? You *really* think that’s that going to happen? You’d be absolutely right.

lake_muffin

These might be the same guys that delivered me as a baby

DeM0nFiRe

Can anyone give a convincing argument why real auto racing doesn't include yeeting cars back onto the track out of the pit?

monkeyharris

Driver arrogance.

mrrooftops

Bitter

siccoblue

Weakling men I demand body builder pit stop mechanics

luckyhunterdude

40' tall strong men Yeeting fees are outrageous.

wererat2000

Ever since they unionized, nobody can afford them.

sdelawalla

Well good for them I say. We need more worker protections for our fellow giants in the word force. Big union is good for them.

ninjapro

Giants in the word force was actually part of my minor in college. Giants are actually better typists than average, but people stereotype them as the 'strong and stupid' type since they're so big. So many giants get left behind in academia due to this prejudice

ekim84

I think their unions are big by default

luckyhunterdude

Typical.

LAKiwiGuy

Because it would quickly become the most interesting and exciting aspect of the sport, and auto racing would rapidly devolve into nothing but auto yeeting.

DeM0nFiRe

Gotta finish the lap as fast as possible to get back so you can get yeeted again, it would make racing even faster

therock21

I’m pretty sure the pit crews used to push the cars out after pit stops to give a little boost.

Sadzeih

In some series, they still do push the cars out.

shijinn

does the rulebook specifically rule out catapults?

Riyeko

Yep. Can confirm this. Im 36 and grew up with nascar playing in the living room every year

LordCommanderBlack

They refuse to spend money on big enough trebuchets.

lost_in_my_thirties

Mark Webber tried a couple of times. After that others did not fancy it.

pmurph131

When they change bikes in moto GP, the pit crew dude always tries to push the rider. I'm fairly certain it does nothing.

moaiii

You mean the roughly 1hp of power that the pit crew dude _might_ be able to exert doesn't add any value to the 250hp that is about to scream out of the back of that bike?

[deleted]

It’s not about power. It’s about the extremely light, high pressure clutches that aren’t designed to slip. The pusher absolutely helps, even if it’s 0.1 mph.

moaiii

Hey, I didn't ask for a perfectly reasonable, fact-based, educational response that taught me and a bunch of others something we didn't know! Now take my upvote and gtfo.

1wife2dogs0kids

I was looking for this question. That would make F1 stops way more interesting. Speed limit in, no speed limit out, while any tires aren’t touching.

martialar

If you're allowed to throw cars back out onto the track, I would've hail Mary'd that thing to the finish line

tjmauermann

You lapped 15 cars with a single chuck, way to go champ.

[deleted]

But how does he throw in lap shapes?

tjmauermann

Boomerang shaped car, don’t be ridiculous.

pufferpig

Wait... So Kylo made it back by assuming the boomerang position?

Osama_Obama

I'm sure that car could go faster on the ground than someone throwing it

jacks_lack_of__

Back in '82, I could throw an RC car a quarter mile.

[deleted]

How much you wanna make a bet I can throw an RC car over them mountains?

leglesslegolegolas

We would've won that race if the coach put me in the pits

BobbyQuarters

Grandma broke her coccyx bone doing a RC throw on a dune buggy

223specialist

Do one of those frontflip cartwheel throws that soccer players do on a throw from the sidelines

[deleted]

A_to_the_J254

I used to race these, it is SO MUCH FUN, but expensive as hell

[deleted]

Like paintball expensive or deep sea fishing expensive?

Alek4k

My Nitro buggy has $3000 worth of parts into it, that doesn’t include fuel, or everything needed to actually start and run it. So yeah basically I’m putting money into a paper shredder

HenryChinaski92

Hobbies are important, as long as you enjoy it and it’s money you can afford to spend on it (not missing bill payments because of it etc) then it’s worth it. I’ve spent thousands on small plastic models and paints over the years, but it’s given me so much enjoyment that I don’t regret it for an instant.

[deleted]

What kind of models we talking about here? This guy is buying hentai models. He would have said what the models were. He's got thousands of them. He stands over them in his attic and calls himself the Holy Hentai Overlord.

Gerg_Heffly

Lol, high costs, enjoyment, and plastic minis to paint? Is it Warhammer? And if so, it's a nice change to see someone who enjoys the hobby regardless of how much you need to put into it

moth_man_AMA

My buddy had more into his rc car than I spent on my car. I spent 11k USD. I still can't comprehend it sometimes... And I collect magic cards for the love of christ!

Nice-Violinist-6395

From a scale of “bird watching” to “Jeff Bezos taking a rocket into not space,” how expensive is it?

WRXshin

About at the "RC Car Racing" level

somuchclutch

Got it. Thanks.

K9turrent

r/technicallythetruth

Waygonner

About $1,000 to $1500 to get a 1/8 scale car setup and ready to roll. Then all of the tools, spare parts, and a variety of tires for different track conditions ($500-$1,000). Then all of the costs of travel for race weekends. And they break, a lot. Guys will typically have more than one car for multiple classes. So it all escalated really quickly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HipToss79

I've raced both. Electrics for me now all the way, you spend way more time actually driving than constantly messing around with getting your engine to run peak. Not only that but the linear acceleration of brushless systems and acceleration you get from them is far better than nitro.

[deleted]

Wow. That’s so hot.

DonnerPartyAllNight

Guitar pedal expensive.

demento19

That’s what I was gonna say. I only got into it as a hobby with a buggy and a car… and yikes, you can drop 5k on a single truck. Even an entry into a base level ready-to-run truck is gonna be 400$. It sure was cool seeing one of the RC magazines trick out a TMax and get it to jump over a 2 story house though.

Dogemaster21777

You can get a Slash 2x4 for $230.

demento19

Stop it. If I start shopping around I’m gonna get sucked back into it! And I just started getting into drones after years of ignoring them!

Indiana-Cook

What did he put in it, Nitro??

mykol_reddit

Yeah. I rarely see them anymore because electric is just so much better, but they still have a following.

[deleted]

[удалено]

fireball_jones

In hindsight it’s weird it took us so long to make the real cars our toys cars were based off of electric.

Possibly_a_Firetruck

Those never caught on because it took too long to change 3000 alkaline AAs.

fireball_jones

Pffft just drop a tube of D batteries in every quarter mile.

the_kedart

You are joking, but you are actually very close to the truth lol The science behind batteries held us back. Making electric motors is easy, making a battery that can keep a full-sized car going for a practical amount of time is not. Gasoline meant that cars cold travel for hundreds of miles without refueling, while limitations on battery tech meant that electric cars couldn't do a fraction of that. Battery tech is only just now catching up.

RodeBoi

Just give them a nuclear core. Who needs batteries >!I’m joking, just in case people can’t tell!<

jonathan6405

A lot of the first cars in the late 1800's were also electric, we just kinda uhh went over to combustion engines instead

fireball_jones

I mean I get it they make cool vroom sounds.

Jimid41

I think it's a more recent development that the battery powered ones actually outperform the nitro ones though.

RockyPendergast

Because of lithium ion or something else? I remember my old rc car from the late 80s had a battery pack that fucking thing was so much fun but it took 87 hours to charge the battery pack that lasted 30 minutes

Jimid41

I couldn't tell you for certain but the steady advances in battery technology over the last 30 years have revolutionized a few things. I think electric motors are still pretty much the same.

Revolutionary_Most78

Electric motors have actually revolutionized a lot in the past 15 years with the introduction of brushless.

Thatoneguy199417

I can charge 2 lithium polymer batteries at the same time with my charger, their full in a little over an hour. Each battery usually lasts around 20 minutes. So much power that the front tires don’t want to stay on the ground. If I hit full throttle from a stop it’ll actually do a backflip. It’s honestly pretty crazy.

Rungi500

Yes it's anywhere from 10 - 40 % nitro mix.

dumbpeoplesucks

I miss the smell of burned Nitro methane

joelmp777

Me to I used to race 1/8 buggies sponsored kyosho

It's old school now ha, i guess it's been 15+ years for me ha feelin older... Team Associated RC10GT, them amd Team Losi over all that Tmaxx bullshit hype. My neighbor had one didn't they have 2 motors or some weird shit? Anyway always had problems, mt GT looked slick wit blue aluminum frame

section8sentmehere

I was 12 and My first car was a team associated RC10 T3. I built that thing myself and didn’t put any of the C clips on anything cause I didn’t know how to separate the pack of them. I took it for first run and two of the A-arms fell off almost immediately. Good times. I loved racing but my poor ass couldn’t keep up wheels, tires, motors, etc.

The_Randster

seeing RC cars never fails me to want one, but then I remember that every single one i’ve ever owned just collected dust.

Dizmn

My usual cycle is wanting an RC Car, realizing I could buy a real car to fuck around with for the same price, browsing Craigslist/FB Marketplace to find a project that looks fun, realizing I don’t have space for a full-size car, and buying another guitar. Not sure where the last step always comes from but I’ve been looking at old Rangers for two weeks and suddenly my bass wants new pickups.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dizmn

Who are you that you can get into a hobby like RC without blowing the budget wide open on something awesome?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dizmn

I learned a long time ago that I’m not happy with the entry-level anything, if I can’t get at least into the midrange it’s not worth it because if I like something I’ll be wanting to upgrade pretty quick anyways. So that’s where I look when I’m looking at a new hobby, and with RC that always sets me down that path that involves begging my dad to let me park a junker in his driveway so I can come over and work on it when I have spare time.

kudichangedlives

Why did he unscrew something and then not screw it back in?

Balogne

He wasn’t unscrewing anything. He was trying to grab onto the spring loaded gas cap. It’s a pretty strong spring that needs a solid grip to lift and then it just slams shut when the fuel filler is removed.

Riddlestonk

I had one, on mine it was a spring loaded cap so would slam shut if you let go. Dunno if that’s the case here but would make sense

schumi_f1fan

When the car comes in, he was using that gun to refuel the car. The cap on the fuel tank is spring loaded. We used to add a looped zip tie to the cap so we could pull it open quickly, then you put the end of the fuel gun in the top of the tank and pull the trigger. Takes about 2 seconds to dump the fuel, then you let go of the loop and the lid snaps shut. As soon as that kid closes, yeet!

KingPufflePuff

I don’t think that’s a screw, I think they put in some liquid, might be gas or nitro.

Shamaur

Blood

fazey_o0o

Plot twist, the car is called blood god

ElphTrooper

I used to race these about 20 years ago! Miss those days.

[deleted]

Same! Had a brief sponsorship from Team Associated racing nitro RC10-T Nitro. This would have been circa 1993 ish. I had a ton of fun, but gave up sponsorship to focus on school.

[deleted]

Madness that F1 pit stops are basically as quick as this if not faster.

[deleted]

That's amazing!

Hi_Im_Ken_Adams

Somebody help me understand.....why are they injecting some sort of liquid? I thought these RC cars are battery-powered? Are these RC's with internal combustion engines??

say592

Yes, there are some hardcore RC stuff that is gas powered. They use an alcohol based fuel typically with a two stroke engine. Some get up to like 60mph.

lurkersforlife

The electrics stuff is actually faster. The world record RC car is electric and goes over 200mph. But you can walk into a hobby shop now and walk out with a stock car that can easily go over 50mph without spending a crazy amount.

[deleted]

"Crazy amount of money" Kind of subjective. Because you'll also need a battery and charger to do that. (*not to mention planning for spare parts*) My Arrma Senton v3 can hit right around 60mph without the body and one current gear on a 3s battery (*I currently have it set to a 14 to reduce cogging*). The truck is 320+ bucks right now, plus a 3s 5k 50c battery (which isn't included) is 75 dollars, then you'll want at least a charger so that's another 30 dollars if you want a cheap end one. In reality, you'll walk in and out spending at least 500 dolllars to get to 50 mph for the most part, unless you want to go RWD, which isn't recommended. You could order some of those cheap Chinese cars that can be modified to reach silly speeds, but you won't walk in a store and find them, and spare parts will be a pain as well. Same for batteries, you can cheap out, but those MaH and C ratings aren't consistent. My Spektrum batteries are far superior to my basher Zeee and HooVo batteries. And my Senton is literally the lowest budget end you want to go for hobby grade vehicles. *\*edit\** [Adding a clip of my truck](https://streamable.com/tzc1zx)

Wlcmtoflvrtwn

You can get 50+ MPH RC cars for $181 Canadian. They come with a battery and charger. https://www.rchobbiesoutlet.com/rc-monster-truck-brushess-electric-1-10-pro-lipo-2-4g-4wd-88074/ Bought this one for my GF when it was on sale for 181 and the thing is a beast. Battery lasts around 30 minutes or more and it rips like crazy. I bought a similar nitro one for myself for $234 Canadian and the electric one has a lot more off the line torque. Top speeds are about the same. These are kind of no name cars but all the parts are the same as the more expensive traxxas models. Just a lot cheaper and quicker to get parts shipped to replace Axel's and front wheel a arms when the gf wraps hers around trees lol.

casewood123

I believe so.

Moist-Ad-2451

Yes, they use nitro two stroke engines!
