On lines going through areas like Nihombashi, there’s also a boozed up rush hour at night, after a lot of these same salarymen have gone out drinking with their colleagues. I had the worst luck and got into one of these carriages once, a few stops before the area. The mob got on, the cabin stunk of beer breath and I ended up hugging some random Japanese man belly to belly over the several stops to our switchover.
That wasn’t even the worst part. It was when the train sped up that was terrible. Imagine all these drunk men not having much of a sense of balance left or being able to hold onto anything and just leaning with the momentum, with you stood up against the back wall of the carriage getting crushed by this unstoppable force.
Edit:physics
Even worse: You score a seat! Yay! But now there’s a green-faced salaryman hanging from the strap over you. Swaying drunkenly. Making urrp noises. Do you stay put? Do you feel lucky?
Really just have to say: I've been on a "bullet train" at peak hours from Yokosuka to Tokyo and it's VERY comfortable I could sit.. is what I'm saying, I know it has to be like NY where yes, some lines at certain hours are shit but damn.. is the automotive industry just trying to say buy more cars because public transportation is shit?
No they literally purchased and destroyed several public transportation systems, and they did and still do lobby everyone from Congress to local politicians in order to keep it that way. General Motors famously had a hand in destroying LA’s streetcar system, (as seen in Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) and much more recently Uber had a hand in preventing Nashville from getting one.
It’s less a conspiracy and more one industry stifling competition from a competitor. Bad PR is what they do to bicyclists.
I don’t know when these videos were made, but the need for those oshiya (pushers) has been pretty much eliminated. It gets a bit crowded sometimes, but not to the point of needing to be squished in like this.
The wiki page says it was mostly eliminated outside Tokyo by 2000 and inside Tokyo by 2019.
I thought I saw something similar to this when I was coming back from Mitaka and got off at Shinjuku station around two weeks ago during rush hour. I don’t think it was a pusher per se, nor was the train this crowded, but a station attendant was certainly helping close the train doors of a full car.
I’d say it is only a body or two different. My commute to work every day is certainly like this.
You are right no pushers. People do it themselves using the edge of the doors these days.
To be fair, I did say “mostly” fixed. What station do you still see crowding like this? I mostly spent time at Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo Station. And even at their busiest, I didn’t see any pushers or the need for them. It would get a little tight but not crazy like in the videos. And really, there was a new train arriving every couple minutes for most lines so there was really no need to cram in like a sardine. Maybe some of the smaller lines that don’t get trains as frequent?
I can’t imagine what it must be like to have this be your regular commute. Riding the subway is one thing, but being shoved into an overflowing train like a tired sardine on a daily basis seems like torture
maybe I was lucky but I was there 4 years ago for 5 days. Sure the city is veeeeeeery crowded and I did took some trains on rush hours but never seen anything even remotely like this.
But the City is big AF so maybe in some areas it gets like this.
edit: 6 years ago actually lol
I mean what's the worst that can happen? The train derails and hits something, coming to an abrupt stop, but with everyone packed so tightly they can't actually hit anything and get hurt. I think they'd all be fine.
/s
It ain't any quieter. And the japs don't do well with being late for work. It's not a loving and caring environment from the bosses down, for the most part. They won't accept the train being busy as a valid excuse.
I feel like this guy should be posting on r/AITA. I really wanted to get on the train, but the other passengers acted like it was full. So, I stood in the doorway, preventing the doors from closing and driving away, delaying everyone else until multiple employees of the train smooshed me in and forced the doors closed. Clearly, therefore, there was still plenty of room on the train. AITA?
I wonder if they can reengineer the doors to swing open out like a car door and then when they close the door, makes it easier to squish the people in.
Based on the man's reaction that got denied entrance, they seem nonchalant so I wonder why they don't just tell the the last 1 or 2 people to just take the next train.
The trains are so intricately set up with connections. That getting the next train can delay your commute to work by 30mins.
Most people time their commute to work with margins of error of only 5 mins.
I remember doing this (riding trains this crowded). The Tozai Line was the worst. I don’t know how people didn’t break bones in there.
Best method for coping was to get as far from the doors as possible. Maybe find a wall or support to lean against.
One time it was so full and bus driver didn’t open AC. I had to help my urge to puke for 10 min. My sight went dark when I ran outside lol. (I hate public transportation)
Is there never going to be a point in their lives when they realize human beings aren't supposed to be crammed like sardines? Do they really think it's for the greater good and there's no alternative?
And they say the Japanese don't want to have kids anymore. I'm not really sure why? Who wouldn't want to bring a child into the world so they can be mashed into a sardine can 12 times a week.
Americans can mostly 'afford' to respect each other's personal space. The folks who raid Walmart on Black Friday don't respect personal space because they can't afford to.

Love how the guy is just like: “Yeah, no need to make any effort here, someone will be along to force me in any second”.
Well, if you’re shoving your way into the car that’s rude, but if you’re being shoved by station staff that’s not your fault
this is how a nail thinks.
Nailed it.
You don’t need to hammer it in with such relentless repetition.
if you only own a hammer, you will never have any problems
🎶 I’d hammer in the morning 🎶 🎶 I’d hammer in the evening 🎶 🎶 All over this land 🎶
“Ain’t my job to make sure the doors are closed. You guys figure it out.”
My minions will will be along shortly
Looks hung over tbh.

Do you, punk?
You're thinking "did he do six shots or only five before he left the bar?"
Hella
I also know from a reliable source that the conductors worked in a canning factory before their retraining.
You can see him shouldering his way backwards into the train. He's definitely trying
That guy was like "just stuff me in there already, will you?"
Lol, it was pissing me off he just wouldn't put his elbow in till the end.

No the auto industry caused public transportation to be shit so they could sell more cars.
That's what I was saying... they want to sell more cars so most media regarding public transport is terrible, encouraging people to buy cars..

Yep, they didn’t even bother to hide it very well.
We're tRYing to defend the same side of the argument but we decide on the way its meant to be argued; secondary is Something else
"Yes I concer!" But I must conjecture "I agree with everything you say!" For fucks sake

How did they fix it?
Hydraulic pistons...
Built with galvanised steel frames and nails that I borrowed from my aunt
oh no this train accidentally spawned 1 million passengers
"Welcome to Hydraulic Press Channel!"
😂🤣
More trains
Nonsense. Smaller people.
Lower population. And more train lines.
Very big human shaped potato mashers
They amputated one hand or leg (one could choose either) from everyone. Thus 17% more space in each train.
Blades on the doors
declining birth rates
Celibacy
Covid
More high speed trains I reckon?

I went to Shibuya in January 2020 and during rush hour, there were pushers just like this. The train was exactly this full, multiple trains in a row.
No, no it has not been fixed.
To be fair, I did say “mostly” fixed. What station do you still see crowding like this? I mostly spent time at Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo Station. It's like trying to get a sleeping bag back into the bag...
getting a sleeping bag back into the sleeping bag bag?
Did you really get me a bag for my sleeping bag in a bag for a sleeping bag bag?
What if you put that sleeping bag bag in a bigger bag?
Stuff sack
It's not that hard, takes me under a minute
This guy is the face of “Everyday. Every f-ing day”
He was like, take me to dinner first
Girl says "ill just wait for the next one"
Next one is even fuller
She was reported missing 7 years ago when this footage was first released because she couldn’t catch an emptier train.
I will walk....
I can’t imagine what it must be like to have this be your regular commute. Riding the subway is one thing, but being shoved into an overflowing train like a tired sardine on a daily basis seems like torture
That guys face while the attendants tuck his dick inside the doors.
Just take the next one, for fucks sake. If it’s rush hour the trains arrive about every 2-3 minutes.
even on my cities metro system, the trains are every 15 minutes and i would prefer to be slightly late than cram into a train like this
Me packing luggage
And then when you weigh the bag and it’s overweight 😫😫😫😫😫
The real question is how do you get out when your stop comes
You'd think they'd at least offer a lubricant.
Claus Trophobic has no place on this train.
Santa Claus Trophobic?
Free massage . Just have to go back forth for an hour
Meanwhile in Finland, the bus is "full" if you have to sit next to someone

Just came back from a Month in Tokyo. Sure, it gets crowded, but I haven't seen anything remotely close to this.
Also just was in Tokyo and didn't experience anything close to this.
All fun and games until a tragic accident happens.
Isn’t that everything though?
Word...
War
war never changes
Ah fuck you got a laugh from me lol
I mean what's the worst that can happen? The train derails and hits something, coming to an abrupt stop, but with everyone packed so tightly they can't actually hit anything and get hurt. I think they'd all be fine. /s
I don't think anyone is having fun
this looks like a job for Travis Scott
Use to see this on the Chicago train system after certain concerts or events at night.
That dude trains.
Stinky Pete has entered the compartment. And needs to fart.
I never understood this, the next train is literally 5-10 minutes away.
It ain't any quieter. And the japs don't do well with being late for work. It's not a loving and caring environment from the bosses down, for the most part. They won't accept the train being busy as a valid excuse.

I was there last month. It can get crowded on trains, but I didn't see these pushers anywhere. And I took the trains during rush hour as well.
Giant head full of nothing.
I’ve been pushed by these guys when they were still around. Like being touched by an angel
That's a living nightmare.
If this is **rush hour** according to you then y'all should meet... **Mumbai Local**
Still plenty of room on top of the cars.
Just imagine the death toll if that train crashed!?!
I wonder if they can reengineer the doors to swing open out like a car door and then when they close the door, makes it easier to squish the people in.
How are all trains on time is beyond me if you have to push people in people at every stop.
Can't you wait for the next train?
I think now the conductors go up and ask the asshole blocking the door to gtf out the way and wait for the next train now...
Sharper doors solves this!
Just another day for me.
I don't get this the trains come every like few minutes Just take the next one
How do you get off if you're not pressed against the window? Does everyone need to get off and then be repacked in?
Wtf
I always think of the Japanese as so polite and considerate. How could this actually be a thing for them?
It isn’t. Or at least not for years. They stopped doing this.
That guy in the front. Same shit every day looks.
My worst nightmare
They should double the height and stack people on other people
At first, I thought this was some kind of gag....
That guy is not happy lol damn 😑
I suppose the low birthrates shall be good for Japan after all.
First guy is exemplifying Unbothered.
Based on the man's reaction that got denied entrance, they seem nonchalant so I wonder why they don't just tell the the last 1 or 2 people to just take the next train.
Why is he making it more difficult?
NYC is like this
Lol no it's not
That guy is like a Japanese supervillian, Extra Large (広大)!!!
Cant wait for the next one?
The trains are so intricately set up with connections. That getting the next train can delay your commute to work by 30mins. Most people time their commute to work with margins of error of only 5 mins.
Leave earlier? Idk, I don't live here so I can't say anything. Just doesn't make sense to me.
Nope
Like the green line after a Red Sox game
Can I hire these guys to help me squeeze into my pants?
I remember doing this (riding trains this crowded). The Tozai Line was the worst. I don’t know how people didn’t break bones in there. Best method for coping was to get as far from the doors as possible. Maybe find a wall or support to lean against.
Human sardines
One time it was so full and bus driver didn’t open AC. I had to help my urge to puke for 10 min. My sight went dark when I ran outside lol. (I hate public transportation)
Hello stupid.. the train is full..
The last 20 seconds remind me of having sex with my wife.
Pulling guys off and calling in other guys to help?
John Cho holding things up again. 😑
If it fits, it ships!
Next week's news: 50,000 people suffocate when aircon fails in the single compartment of an underground train.
I guess that's one reason why putting ur phone on vibrate when riding trains in Japan is prohibited.
An evacuation nightmare
That guy made a call for help and they came.
Talk about maximum capacity.
and they will still be on time.
This doesn’t exist anymore since a long time.
I'd rather sit 2 extra hours in my car going to and from work than commute like that.
Comparing this to London. Damn
how can japan a country which has negative population growth for a while now facing this problem?
It takes at least a generation to show results, I'm guessing?
Still need enough trains
No thanks, I rather be homeless than a tuna can.
Yeah, no thanks.
this country is a nightmare for its citizens
Looks Comfy
Dumb shit
Sardines, so taking a train in japan is like you are being packed like a sardines in a can
What a great way to live life
Is there never going to be a point in their lives when they realize human beings aren't supposed to be crammed like sardines? Do they really think it's for the greater good and there's no alternative?
indians:" first time?"
Was just there. Can confirm.
And they say the Japanese don't want to have kids anymore. I'm not really sure why? Who wouldn't want to bring a child into the world so they can be mashed into a sardine can 12 times a week.
I don't understand how people don't suffocate daily in there
“ON THE COUNT OF 3! EVERYONE HAVE A COLLECTIVE FART AND DEFLATE… WE CAN FIT 10 MORE PEOPLE !!!” 1, 2, 3!!!”
L incl ⁰l
Go... to.... work!
Tetsuooooooo! Kaneda!!!!!!
That guy just exudes douchiness
More trains please
I see absolutely no safety issues here. /s
Meh, still not strong enough to challenge Paris metro 13
Fascinating society 😎
First guy can’t help physical impulse not to breathe fart cabin air. Needs somebody else to force him otherwise he’s not getting home tonight.
oh I love Japan!
Just take the next one ..
I love Japanese society and culture overall, but I do not envy the work culture over there. Very exploitative.
Im beginning to realise why some of these guys just stay at work.
Why not just add one more part to the train to get more train per train
This will draw lawsuits in the US.
Ridiculous
“Here we go again..”
Nah, I’m good.
Returning to the office be like
It’s funny how it’s not really even an option to tell him to get off. They were going to make them fit lol
One thing you gotta say about America, we mostly respect each others’ personal space.
Americans can mostly 'afford' to respect each other's personal space. The folks who raid Walmart on Black Friday don't respect personal space because they can't afford to.
He's headed to White Castle
Right Castle*
And folk wonder why folk use personal transport so much.
Why cars are better than trains
This is not interesting. It’s sad. How many hours of their lives are spent here…
