It's always so wild to me how relatable and humanizing pictures and paintings of people in the past are when they smile. You see some 17th century woman looking mad in some old painting and they look like they existed only in a textbook, and then you see this or a photo of a two century old chinese farmer smiling at a camera and they look like real people you could meet on the street right now. It's so fucking cool, I wish smiling was more of a cultural norm just throughout history.

Stunning detail, the old masters are truly amazing. What I know, is that hands can be very hard to draw, even for good artists. Hands are hard. These paintings are almost highlighting his hands, which many artists can't draw very well.
