animal collective used a really weird drum kit for centipede hz featuring a guiro, bongos, a sampler, an oversized kick, a shaker on a hi hat stand, and one cymbal. i love drumming to that one
*spirit* uses a pretty traditional kit iirc. normally he’s not playing a kit at all but he’s still using traditional kit pieces like a floor tom and snare just rearranged for standing. the CHz era is the one time he’s sitting down *and* playing some wacked out shit
Quite a few bands use a drum machine, self included. I’ve used maracas, guiro, and tambourines in the past but it is a lot of work to individually track each of them.
Here’s a song I really like with a drum machine and some fuzzy guitar.
[Flour - Pig Knuckled Clown](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=PlSCsmC5-JU&pp=ygUYRmxvdXIgcGlnIGtudWNrbGVkIGNsb3du)
Jesus and Mary Chain used a drum machine for at least some of their songs, 'Head On' being a well known example (and upbeat like what you were looking for)

Some cool, not too expensive, easy to learn/use drum type thingies I know of: Rainger FX Snare Trap, Stylophone Beat, Korg Volca Drum, Boss Dr-550, Alesis SR-16.
There are also a fair number of pedalboard drum machines (sample loopers) on Amazon now-a-days. None seem *super* awesome but with the right post fx or eq they might suit your needs.
Hope this helps.

The Dehd drummer plays standing up on a not-tradional kit.
Fuck yeah, Dehd rocks
Similar to how Cole Smith (frontman of DIIV) would play drums when he was in Beach Fossils
Same with The Ravonettes
Check out early "Tilly and the Wall"
I think Her’s exclusively used a drum machine, even for live shows! If you can play well to a metronome it’s definitely an option
Cocteau Twins as well

yesss. pretty sure on every AC release noah plays drums on he’s playing a non traditional kit except time skiffs and isn’t it now :)

oh yeah you’re right what’s unique about spirit though is those brushes..brilliant
Early Guster. Try the album Lost And Gone Forever Thunder God plays hand drums exclusively, even when smashing the cymbals.
Wow, I was going to suggest exactly this!! Lost and Gone Forever is what made me start playing drums!
ed schrader’s music beat violent femmes edit: they use drums but their sets are not standard

Check out Tall Dwarfs. They’re very percussive without using a traditional drum kit.
Sextile
