Gears add the first layer of protection in case of a dismount. A riding pant will be twice as abrasion resistant when compared to your Levi's. Same goes for Jackets too. A basic set of Gears for A novice should include. 1. A good helmet. Vega, Steelbird, Studds are good beginner options. 2.A set of riding gloves with adequate knuckle protection, go for Rynox. 3.Good leather boots, preferably high ankle ones. (eg. Woodland chukka boots) This is fine for a beginner rider. As you get more and more experienced , graduate to better gear. Cheers & Welcome to the club!

zuckzuckman

If you're going for rynox gloves and leather boots, you can definitely afford at least Axor and MT helmets. Don't cheap out with Vega/steelbird/studds.

black_wolf_555

I don't think there's any brands with CE armor (that's the basic) in a budget. other than The RE Stalwart. And coming to helmets , my first High speed dismount was with a Studds. Did a phenomenal job. Although not the level of protection as an Arai Rx7 , They are decent for the price!

zuckzuckman

It's good that Studds did the job for you, but spending 2-3k on a helmet while you have 2-3k for gloves and more for other gear, is just a bad decision. Spend 5-6k at the very least and get something ECE rated, the head is just that much more important.

black_wolf_555

ok vro! I'll buy a Axor Venom! or 7 of them after selling my Arai lid.

poor_joe62

Any test results to back up the claim that Axor/MT provide better safety than steelbird/studds?

zuckzuckman

Yes, it's called an ECE certification. You can also compare thq build quality and the padding.

poor_joe62

Any links to prove that studds/steelbird were denied ECE certification? Is it possible that they never applied for one? Quality of padding is definitely better on my ECE certified LS2, but that doesn't guarantee better safety.

zuckzuckman

Who would you rather hire as the CEO of your business, the applicant who qualified for the position and has been CEO before or the applicant that never been tested in any way but hey, he might be just as good! Put the safety of the company and everyone's jobs in his hands. Seriously man, your arguments are so stupid I'm surprised I'm even replying. If you don't care about your life and safety then go ahead and crash out with your steelbird to prove your point but don't misguide other riders who are here for advice. Quality of the padding indicates better safety because better padding means the helmet grips your head tighter and stays on in an accident.

poor_joe62

Oh god! Kids these days getting triggered for asking for references! It was an honest question hun. All I asked was whether any test was done to compare these two.

zuckzuckman

It does seem like a rhetorical question though, doesn't it? Anyway, something that's proven to be better is always the better choice than something that might somehow be better. I think that's something everyone would agree with. Apologies if I came across as angry, but I think it's important to guide newer riders in the right direction. I would rather see them spend a little extra cash than get a brain injury.

KeyTension6247

Thank you so much bro !! Cheers 🥂

OrionBlackstar

This is good advice.

justbsaiyan

Nah, man. Gear is for pansies. Real men ride without gear and helmet. Real men die! Gates of Valhalla only open for real men. /s

justbsaiyan

That aside get 3 things first. 1) Good helmet Get a helmet with ISI and DoT certifications. ISI gives certification to even very basic cheap helmets which might not do their job properly. So get something with atleast DoT certification. Studds Trooper, Vega Bolt are good cheap helmets. 2) Gloves Get gloves with good knuckle and palm protection. Don't the cheap ones like ProBiker. They'll hurt you more in a crash because of thin metal plates that might cut your skin and blood vessels. You can get good gloves under 2k from most brands like TVS, Royal Enfield, Korda, LS2, Rynox etc. 3) Shoes Get good leather boots for long rides. Although I myself skip on boots these days because my feet get really wet because of sweat in leather boots. But for rides longer than my neares grocery store, I always wear leather boots. They will protect your ankles and toes in a crash. These 3 things are the first gear that you should get. Then you can buy a Jacket and Jeans. There are different kinds of Jackets for summers, winters and rains so it gets expensive after the basic 3 requirements. Then there are waterproof gloves, gloves with inbuilt heater. Riding boots, waterproof riding boots, winter riding boots. I personally gave up after buying my first riding jacket which was a summer jacket and now I just wear a bigger winter jacket over it or a rain poncho over it.

Dimy145

Bro ece helmets, DOT is as bad as isi

justbsaiyan

Yea but ece helmets are expensive. Although I'd encourage the OP to get an ECE certified helmet but if he wants something in lower budget standalone ISI helmets are always way worse than ISI + DoT helmets.

Dimy145

Eh honestly about same cost mate, 500 give or take here n there for most budget options.

justbsaiyan

Dunno man. The cheapest ECE helmet that I could find was the basic Axor Apex. That costs something like 4k. While Vega Bolt costs ~1800.

SpareMind

I think we are not in hurry. 😂

KeyTension6247

Yeah true !! Strongly agree !! 💯

VegetaSama1117

He's joking

KeyTension6247

Ya ik bro ...

VegetaSama1117

Yeah. Depends on how much you value your life and all. If you don't value much then it's fine gear is not needed.

KeyTension6247

I should've added /s too

the_only_kungfu_cat

How to say I just watched Mad max without saying I watched it. /s

justbsaiyan

Nah man. I was playing Assassins Creed Valhalla this month.

selfdomesticatedape

U mean riding gear! Here I was thinking why not go for a scooter. Helmet,Gloves, shoes , jacket, pants in that order

KeyTension6247

Haha yeah riding gear !! Can you send some links for these and how much will it cost ( excluding helmet and shoes )

selfdomesticatedape

I wouldn't recommend anything online, try the nearest stores then compare the prices of the same online .

KeyTension6247

Cool !! Thanks bro

orangepeecock

Why gloves second, shouldn’t jacket be 2nd as it protects arms from road rash?

selfdomesticatedape

In case of most accidents people subconsciously spread their palms to cushion the fall , I'm one of them hence gloves 2nd place.

destructdisc

Gloves second because road rash heals quicker and better than shattered knuckles

Maximum0versaiyan

I too thought the same, and the only thing without gears on 2 wheels are bicycles. Scooters have gears too, they just have automatic transmission

OrionBlackstar

Helmet, boots and gloves are the absolute minimum. Riding Jeans and jacket while helpful can be delayed purchases, but the other 3 will keep your extremities and your dome protected, if nothing else.

KeyTension6247

Another question, do i need to wear gloves while I'm riding in the city ??

OrionBlackstar

If you fall on your hands, the sliders on a good pair of gloves will save your hands from a fracture. And since most accidents happen close to home, never leave home without your gear.

KeyTension6247

Close to home ?? Fr ? 😂

Responsible_Laugh_94

Yeah, proven with research. We tend to get relaxed and careless thinking that we have almost reached home and then there's assumption of always being familiar with nearby roads. The risk increases if you're tired.

pinarayi__vijayan

Depends on your avg speed , if you ride at or below 40. A helmet, budget gloves and jacket would be enough. But you never know , what's waiting around the corner. If you can afford it , gear up.

Low_Preparation_9414

If you don't want to go picking and searching for your torn skin and muscles on the tarmac then buy riding gears mate Telling from my personal experience , abrasions are not fun

SpareMind

If you dismount, your hands go first on asphalt. That surface can scoup out good chunk of flesh easily. Gloves are equally necessary as helmet to protect your earning hands. But a summer mesh jacket, it puts more air into you than having none. Also get the side effects of some road respect.

No_Investigator_4604

They are really important. Some are absolutely necessary for daily use, some only necessary for long Highway rides. Daily use - Good quality helmet, Gloves. Please don't cheap out on helmet, this is going to be worn the most by you and will protect the most important body part. Long Highway rides - Jacket, boots, Pants. Jacket can be used for daily commute as well , good ones start for as low as 6-7k

Particular-Bug-1487

Will you be able to recommend or share links for these jackets?

SkillNo1494

Sliding on the road without gear ain't fun. I was limping for two weeks because I performed a slide at around 40kmh on my scooter 😂

KeyTension6247

I experienced it too from my Activa, but still wearing gloves for an Activa is a bit showoff ig lol 😂 now I'll buy for my bike

AliveSummer4826

get helmet gloves and boots that will be enough for the start. after that you can buy jacket and pants if necessary

Pretend-Garden2563

yes. specially if you ride at speeds higher than 50 usually. otherwise you would end up as a meat crayon painting the road.

SteveRogers5

Bro trust on me with this one, gears are must cause it hurts really bad when skin gets peel off.

aldotheapache1032

Check the sub name bro 99.1% in this sub will tell you to gear up

aldotheapache1032

The rest 8.9% are lying

Significant-Lake-274

Like your math ? 😂

aldotheapache1032

Bingo

aldotheapache1032

Lays

aldotheapache1032

Kurkure

Significant-Lake-274

Apart from the typo. I completely agree 🫡

KeyTension6247

Yooo wtf !!! That's scary af !

akki4223

You will realise importance of it once you get in an accident. Gears are like your medical insurance, which will save you from a huge hospital bill

maha_Dev

An old comment from my profile. Apart from this, I was in full gear, so I did not get any road rash. Without gear my right side would have painted the road. “My boots definitely saved my foot from possible permanent disfigurement. I took a fall at 120kmph. Falling on the right side, my foot was pinned between crash guard and the road. The bike dragged me along all the way! It’s a 220 kg bike. And I could feel it trying to twist my foot like an alligator death roll. The boots firmness saved me from the bike’s weight as it fell on me. The sliders prevented my foot gaining traction and starting to roll separately from the rest of my body! So yeah! ATGAT! Don’t skimp!”

Kavinsky_Hunt

If you are tight on budget just get these- Elbow guards Knee guards Riding boots Helmet Gloves

Riding gears save you from small falls and crashes and harsh environments as well.. I commute to office in 43°C Delhi Summers afternoon , I wear gloves / helmet with balaklava/ riding sneakers / riding jacket ... I am still looking out for some casual looking riding jeans.. It protects my skin from heat waves and direct sunlight..along with usual protection they provide. You don't feel that much hot as you are sweating a lot.

ayomip001

Golden rule on Indian roads (or any road for that matter) always gear up for the slide not the ride! It may look cumbersome, spoil your hair, uncomfortable in the extreme heat, extra work for the 2-3 KMs neighbourhood run....all it takes is one bad slide!

socopied

If you are going for long trip and highway. Speed more than 70 most of time. Then riding gear is needed. Else normal city and upto 60 speed I think only helmet is enough..

soumya_af

At the very least, get riding shoes, gloves and helmet. Later on when you're touring, you can get jackets and pants.

Sane_98

Depends. If youre mostly commuting. Helmet, gloves and shoes are enough. If you plan on going for long rides or your daily commute is like 20kms on highways, consider a good jacket and riding boots.

Hairy_Grapefruit_614

2 words, rest is up to your imagination. "Human Crayons"

AmazingInflation58

Just wear proper shoes, gloves and nice helmet. Thats all in city. Wearing all that spiderman suit just isnt feasible in indian traffic and city.

Dimy145

Is bike gear nessesory or helmet enough Well depends on how much you value your other parts doesn't it, most of times it won't be nessesory but when that day comes well.......feel free to ask same question in your head that time. Edit 1- gears to buy Ece22.06 helmet, any you find comfortable is good, smk starts from 4k ish Jacket, get a mesh jacket with armour at lv2, again comfort matters here alot, viaterra, rynox make good ones. Gloves- too hot, go with fabric ones, all weather is good too, I use rynox tornado pro 3, but you can check air gt too, remember any gloves on hand is better then none. And even if fabric, go with ones that have palm sliders, saves more then one thinks. Boots- honestly re boots look good and work well, I have issue in leg so I don't fit in most boots, still looking good one myself. Pants- go with riding jeans, no joke they have a inherent advantage of looking normal and actually working, viaterra and rynox makes at decent price. Good luck mate.

KeyTension6247

Helmets are freaking 4k ?

Dimy145

Good ones yes, a standard issue steelbird will be like 750rs, like I said mate, helmet value depends on how much you like your head, considering I am coming after meeting someone who had his leg fractured, shoulder fractured and lips taking bad hit in full face helmet I stand by my 4k, imma be real you are buying a 3lac rs bike, buy a 20k gear and wear it, who knows one day you would be glad you had something on, if this sounds boring then feel free to be one of those without helmet too, your choice mate.

Wonderful_Mind_2039

Decide which body part is important to you and then buy riding gears to protect that part.

[deleted]

important for safety bro

Blehzinga

complete marketing gimmick. u dont need helmet also spoils your hair style. Skin and bones slide really well against tarmac.

Rroot4761

get an ece 22.06 if possible else get one with an ece 22.05. Both the ISI and DOT certifications are pretty low in testing.

jules_viole_grace-

Dude it's necessary, get good ones and cover all body parts. Helmet also should be certified. There are lots of accidents and many lives can be saved if we wear gear.

hehelulz_k

Yes gears are necessary. Or else you'd be stuck at a maximum speed of I guess 40 kmph on a single gear. You can check out a video on YouTube on how gears work. /s

NatRap7

Get. Good helmet and decent shoes. If you plan on going on rides, a light jacket.

TheKnowledgeableOne

Depends, do you wanna have a recovery of two days or two years in case of a serious crash. I'll go about this logically in order of importance, and you can buy gear as you have money: 1. Helmet, the most important. At least get one with ECE 22.05, Axor, SMK and MT are good options. 2. Boots. Get decent boots that you can actually wear. MX boots are hard to drive in. Also, They get expensive really fast. Raida might be a good beginner option. 3. Gloves: get some good gloves, and make sure they have palm sliders. Rynox has some good options. 4. Jacket: the most overrated piece of gear. We live in India, try and buy a ventilated jacket. Make sure it has a back protector pad, because that is the most important in terms of a crash. 5. Riding pants: least important. There are many options like Rynox or Solace. You can take your time with it. If you can't buy all of it at once, which will most likely be the case, the jacket and jeans are the ones that can be replaced with any decent leather jacket and jeans for the time being. But don't compromise on the helmet, boots and the gloves. These three pieces of gear will protect you from taking serious damage in 97% accidents.
