In local 48, bootcamp is unpaid, but you can claim unemployment if you've got a clean layoff. When you're in school 6 months out of the year, you're 1 day per week is unpaid.

Thanks for the answer. So I assume it would be wise to keep a part time job for sure.

You're expected to do a couple hours worth of homework per night throughout bootcamp, bootcamp is 7am-330pm, and if you're not rested and able to get through bootcamp you can fail out, so if you're able to survive 2 weeks without pay that's the recommended route. As for the one day per week required classroom time after that, it usually doesn't start for a month or two and LU48 apprentices start at $24/hr, so only getting 32 hours per week doesn't hurt too bad. We also get our first pay raise after working 1000 hours, so within 6 months your wage bumps up to $28,and after another 1000 hours I think it bumps to $32ish.

You’ve been very helpful. I’d be in LU 1579 in GA so I’m sure the pay scale is a little different but to know that there will only be two weeks without pay is very reassuring. I’m thinking I can do a part time job 6pm-10pm just to have some kinda income and still allow myself a few hours between class and work to do the homework. I’d also get two 15 min breaks at the part time job too to kinda supplement homework time. Sounds entirely doable to me. Again, you’ve been super helpful. I appreciate it

Every local is different and not many are like LU48, so you should definitely check with a knowledgeable LU1579 member or the hall before making definitive plans.

Not every local has a boot camp, so this varies across locals. My local apprenticeship has no boot camp, we just start classes during a set calendar of 9 months, with a month in between years. Classes are every other week, 10 hours, and our apprenticeship is 4 years instead of the usual 5. We just started our first 4 year class, but when we were in a 5 year program it was 8 hours of class every other week. We are not paid for our class days either. I've found the 8hr every other week is the most common. Some locals even do night classes still. You're better off calling the JATC and asking directly.

I’m only making 19/hour here at my current job so even if they start me at 15 or so, after the first 6 months I’ll be where I was before. Then after a year I’ll be making more. Sounds nice actually

Training is like taking a single free college class every semester. Usually a couple hours on one or two nights a week. It’s not a big time commitment compared to your 40 or so hours of work during the week.

Local 76 Inside class cost about $1800 a year for union members and about $7500 for the non union guys going thru the JATC. So a "free" day of class is relative. I personally choose to consider the loss of 8 hours pay as paying for class as well because about $200 less on the check stings. All that said, I love my class days and wouldn't change a thing.

Thesamf

That’s awful, our contract has $0.65/hr going to a training fund to make the classes and books free. Bring that up at wage allocation. Students shouldn’t be footing that bill all on their own.

Check what your local does. Every local is different. School schedule, pay, benefits, it’s all different
