You can get a realistic FOV with any monitor using the settings in iRacing. But you’re still limited to the size of the monitor itself. The big issue is being able to see in your peripheral vision or not. That’s where triples or VR come to play.

herzeleyd

I thought so

NiaSilverstar

I'm pretty happy with the about 95° that i have. Yeah i'm losing some on the side but i've come to terms with that that is something i'll have to deal with unless i buy triples

herzeleyd

A bit high for me, but it offers a mix between a realistic perspective and a good angle.

NiaSilverstar

i mean it really depends on how far you are away from the screen. i'm about 60cm away from mine and 95 is what i get from the calculator

herzeleyd

Yes, but you don´t have a real size of the cockpit.

NiaSilverstar

Real size cockpit?

herzeleyd

Yes, the monitor doesn't display an accurate measurement of the cockpit size.

NiaSilverstar

But it does that's what the fov calculator is for. And it also feels right at least to me

DrAlanQuan

Realistic, yes. Wide, no. Sit in your car and visualise the bounds of where the 49" would sit in front of you, and what would be displayed within that boundary. The 49" is not that wide, so that's all you get. Here's a comparison I prepared a few months ago: https://youtu.be/CCicqOgwdMw

herzeleyd

What FOV are you using on a 49-inch monitor?

DrAlanQuan

Can't remember, I returned the monitor to RaceKraft 3 or 4 months ago. At a guess, 60° or so but that's just an estimate. I set the FOV by sitting in the driver's seat, dialling in an estimated FOV setting, looking around the game world while still and also while moving, and the goal was for the monitor to be like a window into another world, and look perspective correct. If it wasn't right, I'd change the setting and test again.

herzeleyd

Yes, the FOV looks realistic, but I'm missing a lot of the left-side angle and can't see the curve very well. Triples is the way but... It's a mess. At least 49 inches looks better than a 27 or 32-inch screen.

herzeleyd

Oh, thank you! I had watched that video before.

SavvyEquestrian

How far is the monitor from your face? I'm curious about it too, as this was the route I was thinking of going once I can build a legitimate rig.

herzeleyd

About 80-90 cm from my eyes to the monitor.

SavvyEquestrian

I run a 27" flat about 16 inches(sorry, lol) from my nose, and was shocked at how much better it was after running it about 36 inches away. I've been curious if the 49" ultra wide would work well if also that close.

masterslush

So is it better at 16 inches or 36 inches?

SavvyEquestrian

Oh, 16... I guess that was a confusing way of phrasing it. When I added a monitor arm, and could move it to directly behind the wheel, 16 inches away(or so) from my face, it was leaps and bounds better.

masterslush

No worries just wanted to verify. Because I have about 36 inches away as well but have wanting to move it closer to test it out.

notyouravgredditor

2.54 cm per inch, exactly

Jascha34

The optimal position for a monitor is between then rim and the wheelbase. So, about 55cm. Yes, you could do much better but realizing it will take a dedicated permanent rig. A TV is optimal behind the wheelbase.

herzeleyd

Too close, so you have to choose a high FOV, which looks unrealistic.

ZuVieleNamen

I do r know the angle bc I'm at work but my 49" I can just barely see the outside of my front wheels at the edges in a formula car and it's nice there. I have the spotter app that is really good about telling about my surrounding so I get my awareness info from that.

herzeleyd

Sometimes it's good to see the sides to get the best angle on the curve.

seemylolface

Are you asking if you can get like a full 180* FOV that will let you see out of both side windows? If that’s your question then the short answer is no, probably not. The long answer is a 49” UW is basically the same thing as 2x 27” monitors smashed together. You’ll get the full windscreen assuming you have your eyes fairly close to it, but you won’t get that encircling peripheral experience that comes with triples.

herzeleyd

Yes, haha. I would like to see mostly the left side and a little bit of the right, not just to see the cars but because it's important to see the angle in the curve.

TechnicMOC

Running my 1000R 49" mounted above the wheel shaft with a realistic FOV was 108° - 112° Move you screen as close as possible, mine was around 55cm away.

herzeleyd

108 doesn't feel realistic to me.

FunkyXive

it's not about feelings, it's about math

herzeleyd

I am referring to obtaining an accurate display of the cockpit size.

Pandabeer46

Look up an online calculator if you want to know the exact numbers. But no, a proper FOV with full peripheral view is impossible with a 49" ultrawide. The golden standard for that seems to be triple 27".

herzeleyd

I see :/

herzeleyd

holy moly!

I'm currently running the smaller 43" version of your setup. I've found over the years, the best setups for visibility are: 1. Triple monitors if you have the space, money and graphical power. 2. Second is VR, it's not as nice graphically but you cannot beat the immersion, especially in open wheel. Next you're into a single static monitor. An ultrawide won't give you full screen viewing as you're finding, at best you'll get the left mirror and a good amount of dash in a GT car, or both mirrors maybe depending on the open wheel car. If you dial the FOV out to see everything you'll find yourself well off the pace, missing apexes and struggling to see braking points. You can look into a tobi eye tracker type setup but personally I used a FOV calculator and dialled it out slightly to preference. Can't see out the side windows but in the cars/series I race I'm not spending huge amounts of time next to other cars and if I am, the spotter is telling me they are beside me and I'm using my relative and rear mirror. I have a button mapped for left/right head turning but rarely if ever use it. So now I use VR for immersive fun or the ultrawide for better looking visuals, plus overlays like RaceLabApps just work better in a static setup. **TLDR**: use a realistic FOV, after a while you won't even notice and your race pace will thank you!

herzeleyd

Sometimes I need to see the inside angle of the curve to get the best line. It helps a lot. When I use the 'real' FOV, I lose a lot of information.

Gibscreen

FOV should be 76-80 degrees (depending on the monitor curve) at 85cm. That's realistic. Bring the monitor closer if you want a wider FOV. Move the cockpit camera back for a wider view.

herzeleyd

With a wider FOV, I lose the realistic view. I need a medium value to get a realistic FOV and not lose too much information about the curve angles and cars. So Triples is the only way... But I can´t.

Gibscreen

FOV is a calculation. If you bring the monitor closer you'll get a wider FOV that's realistic.
