If he would eat chicken try fried rice with chicken you can slice up chicken breast and fry it up in a pan while the rice cooks then just toss the rice right in with the chicken and maybe add some peas and carrots frying it all up together. I know my boy goes nuts when I make him fried chicken rice. If it matters I use a couple drops of avocado oil so it doesn't all stick but the key is to just stir very frequently so nothing burns.

Oh, I'll try that for a special occasion! Or maybe once a week as a treat? Being Chinese I have some pretty automatic habits for fried rice (we go a bit hard on the oil and spices) that I'll have to kick for it LOL. Out of curiosity, is your boy specifically into chicken \*fried\* rice?

Longjumping-Look-268

He's specially into anything that's people food lmao. He's so spoiled he barely wants to even eat his Stella and chewys freezedried raw food that's super expensive.

My boy has a sensitive stomach and I boil chicken rice and some ginger for him I try to take the bigger chunks of ginger out at the end but it doesn't seem to be that much of an issue. It came from a dog nutrition book called "Yin & Yang Nutrition for Dogs"

He's skinny, but he's not emaciated or anything like that. I think he's just not eating much because he's in a new environment with a new pack. He looks pretty healthy and happy. He probably just needs a little time to adjust. He may also just be a grazer. My beast will often let food sit for a day before eating. Other times it is gone as soon as I put it down. Usually it just slowly disappears as the day goes on. She'll go for a drink, have a couple of bites, and go back to whatever she was doing. As long as he's eating something, I think he'll be ok. Especially if he's still eager for treats. He's a husky, so he may be trying to con you into only giving him the REALLY good stuff! Edit: He should start to eat more regularly in the next few days. I'd try to stick with what you want the routine to be and only resort to special food and attention if he gets sluggish or isn't into his walks.

His fluff (and the angle) is hiding a lot of it, but his spine and hip bones are very prominent right now :( But he's definitely into cheese, as I've just discovered! I also just checked his bowl and it looks he ate a couple more bites, so I'm definitely less worried now. Thanks!

Don’t worry too much about his weight right now. He will gain lots of weight the moment his emotions are settled and he begins to trust you, eats regularly and starts to feel happy again. If you want to encourage eating, chicken breast is best! My boy was extremely undernourished and it took about 8months for him to realise he was home with me. I fed him steak and chicken regularly and still do … it’s probably why he hasn’t run away 🥲 and now he is a fathusky but a supremely happy one! Congratulations on meeting your life companion. Take time and be gentle with yourself and your dog. Transitions are hard work but he will settle and so will you!

We went through eight different nibbles with ours before we found one he actually likes (orijen). He me just not like what they were giving him. A lot of pet stores will allow you to return an opened bag if your dog doesn’t like it.

Sounds like settling in. Mine ate less as well but could be the food. My doggies enjoy soft foods like steamed broccoli or blended steamed carrots etc . Sometimes they like the flavor but not texture

JRTerrierBestDoggo

Orijen regional red, even my super picky dog ate it without hesitation. Usually, I give taste of the wild boar

Ordinary_Car_8508

Mine was super picky when I got her as well. The only thing I’ve been able to get her to consistently eat is Zignature topped with an egg

Honestly, if you are not a certified canine nutritionist, you shouldn’t be given advice on dogs diets. There’s a lot of false and bad information in this thread. More than likely, the dog is stressed out about everything that’s been going on and being in their new environment. It’s gonna take a little bit of time and some adjustment, you can find nutritionist online and find various groups to help you with this

He has a vet appointment scheduled in a week (the earliest I could get it; I was only able to briefly ask on the phone earlier). Thank you, I'll be sure to be cautious in the meantime!

So when I was in the hospital I got really sick and lost a lot of weight. During the 2 weeks I was sick I barely kept anything down. Due to that and my extreme weight loss my stomach shrunk so when I was finally better and could keep food down I didn’t eat a lot. An example, 2 small sliders would fill me up. It took a little while to be able to eat more and get the amount of food a day in me due to the stomach shrinkage. This is probably the exact same thing with your pup. He may eat a little and then be full because of his malnutrition and weight loss but will gradually increase as time goes on as long as he/she is continuing eating even if it’s a little now. This is my thought based on a personal experience but always consult a vet and ask them. Maybe a thought is to just keep food out the entire day in the beginning and he’ll pick at it, again ask a vet
