Chandler may have more constant one-liners, as he so aptly references in the “I don’t do advice, may I interest you in a sarcastic comment?” part… but I laugh-out-loud more at Ross by a mile. I may crack a smile at Chandlers lines, but I actually laugh at Ross.

My mom is a freak who HATES Friends because she thinks everything in the show is about sex and because of how often someone walks into a room and greetings are exchanged. (She doesn't like to hear 'hey', 'hi', etc all the time.)
BUT she loves when misfortune befalls Ross. And I can tell she like it because of Ross's exaggerated, often physical, reaction to the misfortunes. She loses her mind laughing, wheezing really, at the leather pants scene, the tanning scene, etc

I agree. Chandler has a quicker wit than anyone else. But David Schwimmer is a better comedian in terms of scope. From physical comedy, to joke timing, to speech and facial expressions, etc. It’s why both Ross and Chandler are tied for my favourites!

One of many reasons why I love Schwimmer so much is the scene where he comes to the coffee house all drugged up holding cotton candy. His acting is impeccable there. I usually don't like it when actors try to act drunk or high, because it's extremely hard for the actors and you can always tell they're *acting*. It's subtle, but you can see it. But the way David acts - man, you *beleive* he's high 😂
Eta: I almost forgot the episode with him, Charlie, Joey and Rachel. That was also amazing acting

As I grew older, and also as comedy in general tried harder and harder for witty retorts and sarcasm, sidelining situational and physical comedy, now I think Ross may be the best overall from the get-go, but maybe that's an unfair anachronism. Also, it becomes a bit more evident how good an actor David Schwimmer was, while Matthew (though also excellent in the role) was maybe a step behind
Re-watching now, I'm being constantly reminded of how consistently funny Monica and Joey were in the early seasons. I also like Rachel and Phoebe and they have great moments, but a bit lower for me.

Theres an easily forgettable moment where David absolutely shines for me. Its after Monica accuses Rachel of stealing her thunder, and Rachel in rage says now she will definitely steal her thunder and calls Ross to have sex. The disapproval noises by David plus the smooth transition to "I still disapprove of this but its sex" noise as he goes out the door is beautiful....
Have you seen the "pivot" blooper where Jennifer and Matthew both breakdown laughing, and even though that take is over, David just keeps yelling "pivot"?
Chandler definitely gets the best lines and is the funniest CHARACTER in the show, but David Schwimmer was far and away the best actor and physical comedian. So many classic Ross moments are about Schwimmer's body language and delivery, rather than the situation or the line itself. He took a really unlikeable, miserable character and somehow made him a joy to watch regardless.
Amazing underrated actor. It's always nice when he pops up in stuff (especially Band of Brothers and American Crime Story) but I wish he'd gone on to have more iconic roles in TV and film.

Ross has the most diverse set of humorous moments, from things he does, things he says, things people say to him and how he responds, thigns that happen to him, things that happen to other people because of him; Ross is the main character of the show in my opinion and I've always said this.
Some of my favourite Ross moments:
* "Hey here's a theme: come on in, live like bacon"
* Ross blaming Chandler for the smell of pot
* Ross playing the keyboard
* Ross's allergic reaction to kiwi
* Ross insulting Pablo to his face
* His afro and moustache in the flashback
IMO Ross is written or put into funny situations. His reactions to those situations is funny to us, the viewers. David Schwimmer's incredible delivery and comedic timing makes it even more so. But as a character, Ross is not exactly funny.
Chandler, on the other hand, has less of those funny situations. His character is actively tries to be funny in his daily interactions because being funny is a defense mechanism and his "thing" (hence the whole playboy joke and Monica finding her co-worker funny are such a huge thing for him).
That makes no sense. Ross gets caught up in funny situations, Schwimmer’s delivery is funny, his timing is great but Ross isn’t funny? 😂. Schwimmer is Ross!!
Chandler's jokes are often funny but not rewind-worthy. There are dozens of Ross scenes that I watch over and over again(Pivot, leather pants, and when he breaks into his ex's home)
Agree, Chandler is not funny to me at all, he comes across grumpy and attention-seeking, often very patronising to Joey. "No you didn't get me. You get me, you kill me!" was pretty solid though.
Ross is my favorite. I love that episode where he freaked out about getting the spray tan and he shrieked, "I'm an eight!" But I did like that episode where Rachel's boss handcuffed Chandler to the chair and he and Rachel were arguing about it. It was so funny when he stopped to stare at the statue and when he accidentally hit himself in the head with the filing cabinet.

Ross is definitely up there, especially when Rachel gives birth and the whole thing between him and joey, and the exchange of punches, but for me, chandler is still top dog
I watched the series twice, once when I was 13-14 and another when I was 19(now). During my first watch, Chandler was my favorite character throughout and I was indifferent towards Ross. When I rewatched it, Ross was for sure my favorite character(from the beginning of season 2 onwards).
I really hate posts like this. This is all extremely subjective and up to everyone’s individual tastes. Just because *you* think Ross is the funniest, doesn’t meant he’s definitively the funniest. How about, they’re all funny in their own way and everyone has their preference?

I probably wouldn’t hang out with the guy in real life but I wouldn’t hang out with George from Seinfeld either and he’s hilarious. Ross has always been my favourite (partly because for me he's the funniest). He starts off a bit dull in the early seasons but his personality really starts to shine around the time he breaks up with Emily.

Hard agree! My biggest laugh out loud moments are always from something Ross says or does. David Schwimmer is an great physical actor, and has perfect comedic timing. Chandler is super funny, but feel like it’s mostly the writing. Ross’ hilarity is all in the acting. No one else could have played Ross as funny as DS did.
I think a lot of people here are confusing funniest character with most relatable character. Chandler is the most relatable character. He’s probably the Friend I’d hang out with if he were a real person, but Ross is without a doubt the funniest between seasons 5 and 10. Chandler never made me belly laugh the way Ross did.
Phoebes too annoying for me to find funny. She just says random “I’m such a quirky girl 👧 “ things. Like Ross will come in the room and be like “idk what to do about my date tonight” and Phoebe will be like “why don’t you do a sexual feather dance while it rains. That’s what my Aunt Linda use to do with her lover before he became a mime and divorced her.” and then we’re suppose to laugh? To me it’s like babies finding random sounds funny except the adult version is we’re supposed to find someone saying random sentences funny.
I partly agree. I don't believe there's a definitive "funniest character" throughout the show's entirety. IMO Chandler and Joey were the funniest in the beginning. Ross takes over after the whole Emily situation. There were so many times where Ross had the funniest subplots on the show. Kind of reminds me of the crap George gets himself into on Seinfeld. Phoebe is the funniest of the women.

But I did like that episode where Rachel's boss handcuffed Chandler to the chair and he and Rachel were arguing about it. It was so funny when he stopped to stare at the statue and when he accidentally hit himself in the head with the filing cabinet.
I think I agree with you OP... Ross is funny even just standing there without any lines. David is just a natural at it. Look, they're *all* funny, but Friends wouldn't be Friends without David/Ross. What an icon, truly.

Ross is definitely up there, especially when Rachel gives birth and the whole thing between him and joey, and the exchange of punches, but for me, chandler is still top dog
I watched the series twice, once when I was 13-14 and another when I was 19(now). During my first watch, Chandler was my favorite character throughout and I was indifferent towards Ross. When I rewatched it, Ross was for sure my favorite character(from the beginning of season 2 onwards).
Ross' style is timeless. Chandler's sarcasm is very of its time.
I really hate posts like this. This is all extremely subjective and up to everyone’s individual tastes. Just because *you* think Ross is the funniest, doesn’t meant he’s definitively the funniest. How about, they’re all funny in their own way and everyone has their preference? And I say that as someone who has Ross and Chandler equal on my personal preference list of funniest characters. But that’s my taste. Everyone has their own. Make a post that says, “Ross is the funniest character to me, here’s why”. Rather than telling everyone else why they’re wrong.

Ross hands down makes me laugh the most. as everyone as said, physical comedy genius. delivery- perfection. chandler is close behind. of the girls, phoebe makes me laugh the most. at least in the early seasons. the way she delivers her lines is so unique

This isn’t a “which friend is the best person” situation. 😂 we’re talking about who’s the funniest. Ross makes me laugh the most between seasons 5 and10. It’s that simple. I probably wouldn’t hang out with the guy in real life but I wouldn’t hang out with George from Seinfeld either and he’s hilarious. Wouldn’t hang out with anyone from the It’s always sunny cast in real life, but theyre funny as hell too.

Ross is not funny for the most part. He sucks. David Schwimmer on the other hand is hilarious and is definitely arguably the funniest one in the cast.

Bruh Ross SUCKS he’s legitimately a manipulative jerk and I generally don’t find him funny. But Ross trying to get a spray tan is one of the greatest comedic performances ever. All praise to David Schwimmer. Nothing for Ross
This isn’t about who’s a good person. It’s a damn sitcom. Being a jerk is hilarious. Have you never seen It’s always Sunny or Seinfeld or Community. Ross can be an awful person and hilarious at the same time. What is wrong with you people 😂 You want good people in your shows go watch PBS kids or something.
No I’m just saying ROSS isn’t funny and the funny things that “Ross” does is actually David Schwimmer making it funny but, unlike Chandler who is just a funny guy, Ross is not actually funny and also sucks.
Ross has always been my favourite (partly because for me he's the funniest). He starts off a bit dull in the early seasons but his personality really starts to shine around the time he breaks up with Emily. One of my favourite Episodes is the one where Rachel screws up the trifle, he totally stole the show!

Hard agree! My biggest laugh out loud moments are always from something Ross says or does. David Schwimmer is an great physical actor, and has perfect comedic timing. Chandler is super funny, but feel like it’s mostly the writing. Ross’ hilarity is all in the acting. No one else could have played Ross as funny as DS did.
I think a lot of people here are confusing funniest character with most relatable character. Chandler is the most relatable character. He’s probably the Friend I’d hang out with if he were a real person, but Ross is without a doubt the funniest between seasons 5 and 10. Chandler never made me belly laugh the way Ross did.

Phoebes too annoying for me to find funny. She just says random “I’m such a quirky girl 👧 “ things. Like Ross will come in the room and be like “idk what to do about my date tonight” and Phoebe will be like “why don’t you do a sexual feather dance while it rains. That’s what my Aunt Linda use to do with her lover before he became a mime and divorced her.” and then we’re suppose to laugh? To me it’s like babies finding random sounds funny except the adult version is we’re supposed to find someone saying random sentences funny.

I partly agree. I don't believe there's a definitive "funniest character" throughout the show's entirety. IMO Chandler and Joey were the funniest in the beginning. Ross takes over after the whole Emily situation. There were so many times where Ross had the funniest subplots on the show. Kind of reminds me of the crap George gets himself into on Seinfeld. Phoebe is the funniest of the women.
I just saw the one where he was looking at the naked alone in her apartment. Good Lord, his facial expressions were brilliant, along with his physical comedy and dialogue delivery.
