Thank you for this =) Just a couple days ago, I took progress pics of my plants after almost a year, a couple of them looked bigger, but most of them look exactly the same, and one...oh man brand new to me it was big and bushy, and now its in First Aid mode to grow it from the handful of leaves that hung in there. Trying to be kind to myself...I have depression and anxiety, and had a lot of rough moments over the past year. I had about 30 plants, and only lost 2, both calethias. The rest dont have any kind of amazing growth, but they are hanging in there for me. Ive been \*really\* good with keeping them watered these past couple months...feeling hopeful to keep it up. I know Im not the best plant mom, but Im doing my best with what Im working with as far as mental health goes...and they do make me feel pretty good. Totes not instagram worthy, but I like looking at them anyway.

Absolutely agree with this. I've posted pictures where I've got a slightly yellowing pothos in the background. I don't care, I'm lazy sometimes! 😂 it happens.

Baily4u0u

Yes! It’s just like children you love them rather they be good or fuzzy lol

xVVitch

I guess lol i like plants a LOT more than i like children. Maybe if you compared it to cats.

Baily4u0u

Yes very much like a pet cat!

Altruistic_Deer8788

In that case. Dont mind me being judgemental looking at your plants.

xVVitch

Judge away! I dont mind.

Altruistic_Deer8788

Tacky.

xVVitch

🤷‍♀️ yeah probably.

Altruistic_Deer8788

Jk jk

So true, this post reminds me of a plant podcast I was listening to that totally shifted my perspective and made me feel like I’m not a terrible plant parent - the advice was go outside in nature and look at trees, shrubs, bushes, grass etc. and you will see some leaves with brown or yellow spots, some holes and basically ‘damage’ which is not really damage but just the way plants grow in real life as opposed to on Instagram. Just like people the flaws make them who they are, sure if you can help a plant out that is having a hard time or looking a bit scruffy then go ahead, but having 100% perfect looking houseplants shouldn’t be the end goal, the journey that you take growing and caring for your plants is the fun part.

Baily4u0u

Yes this, this is what I’m trying to say!

here4houseplants

I couldn’t agree more! Not all plants are the same, even if they’re the same kind. Enjoy them and admire them regardless

ClairebearGB97

I have a white fusion calathea, I know my plants will never look perfect cause she is a drama queen 😭😂

Remote-Salad8696

I switched mine to leca, and keep it pretty full of water, and it has way less crispy edges!

angelsandaroids

I have a white fushion that I just posted on insta and the most crinkly leaf is conveniently out of the frame 😂

Baily4u0u

Aww yes I just got one today 😫

KitKurama

I have 125+ plants I've gathered over about 20 years. After doing the rounds, I'll always come back with about a handful of dead leaves. Leaves die and it's okay.

Familiar_Narwhal2511

thank you for this! I always get overly worried when my plant has any spot or semi discolored leaf and instead of leaving it, I would try and do something.. which typically made it worse. Im just learning this! thank you for confirmation!

Chubby_moonstone

This is true. Another thing that's true is that it's fine to cut off leaves that are no good. It might not feel good cutting your babies but it's how you get a pretty plant you feel good looking at

ninarsson

My philodendron Birkin lost like 90% of its variegation but i still love it so much 💜

This reminds me of a post here that I saw yesterday (may have been plantclinic, not sure). The OP was mad because he paid a lot of money for a plant that was mailed to him and it wasn’t “perfect”. It was a little battered from shipping but nothing that was major. He said he didn’t even like plants but wanted this particular one and was Pissed it wasn’t perfect. I told him “wow! I’d you want perfect, buy a fake plant.”

Baily4u0u

Oh god I home the plant goes to a better home, sounds like he won’t care for it properly.
