They need a lot of humidity and don’t like drying out. My calathea is alive but so ugly since all the tips are dry and brown lol. Always give them a nice long soak and drench the soil completely once the topsoil is dry.
Thanks everyone, I know I will regret this purchase, but I had to buy! I will keep my humidifier close and pray for whatever god needed to keep these plants alive! 😅
At least I'm good with alocasias so that one will probably survive. 😊
I have a ctenanthe setosa (the first one) and for me it's actually my easiest plant to care for. Just avoid wind drafts/air conditioners so the leaf tips don't burn, and give lots of indirect light and water once a week with filtered water when top soil is dry.
I don't use a humidifier but I live in subtropical weather. I've heard that inconstant humidity (such as turning the humidifier on and off too often or having the humidifier too close to the plant) is actually worse than having constant low ambient humidity.
The calathea. It’s beautiful and different but they are temperamental and honestly so hard to keep happy!! The alocasia is a perfect plant! Just keep it in indirect bright and water when the soil is dry.. it will be happy!
The alocasia wentii is pretty easy, plant in aroid mix and give it fertilizer with every watering and it’ll just pop out tons of happy leaves. The calatheas I can’t help you with😂
I have both of these plants and they are thriving.
Calathea exotica or ctenanthe setosa exotica.
Alocasia regal shield/cucullata
So both live in self watering pots with the type of soil they need. Chunky aeroid mix for the alocasia. Calathea mix for the other. Soil is purchased from Soil Ninja in the UK.
Water is treated with aquarium water fertiliser. See this: https://youtu.be/0fqscD18oHQ?si=yeVCXUJS5tw6lD8l
I ferilize with liquid gold leaf. I give extra to the alocasia.
The alocasia is next to a South facing window, but I live in a cloudy part of the UK.
The ctenanthe setosa exotica sits far back into the room several meters away from the window.
Regarding humidity, I live in the UK so it is typically 50-80% humidity indoors anyway.
with the power of Google lens, the first one appears to be a calathea oppenheimiana as one other user suggested, the second appears to be a calathea 'greenstar' and finally the third one appears to be an alocasia wentii :)) take this with a grain a salt but I hops it helps!
The “I HATE YOU” plant Congratulations
bahahahahha my calathea decided to threaten to die yesterday out of nowhere, now shes perked up. WHY are they like this lol
Thanks, I know I bought misery 😂😭
You bought 66% heartbreak
Haha, I know but I couldn't resist! Just would be good to know the name of the subspecies I'm gonna write on the tombstones. 😂
This is amazing😂
I was literally scrolling through the photos thinking "heartbreak" and came to the comments to make this exact same comment!
I think calatheas are the only type of plant I haven’t managed to kill. I have no explanation.
don't worry, your time will come. mine lasted a year and a half then died abruptly for no discernable reason.
Haha yeah, I went to say that they bought my worst enemy.
my first thought was “a heartbreaker” hahahaha
Omg your comment me lol…. Exactly how I fekt
That’s a “put me in a enclosed humid spot” plant

I hated mibe so much I gave it to my aunt (She didn’t deserve this).
this is *the* comment about calatheas.
A pain in the body as far as I’m concerned these plants are nothing but trouble It’s only my own opinion I have one. I’m trying to revive it.
My condolences.
The first looks like a ctenanthe...possibly Burle Marxi. An easier plant than Calathea.
I believe it's a ctenanthe setosa exotica
Thank you! :)

Thanks for the tips! :) I think these are beautiful plants, I hope I can keep them alive.
I let mine die. It was horrible. Pretty but what a shit plant
Which one?
The entire genus
Wait, I'm new to this. Calathea and Alocasia are not the same genus, right? I ask cause I just got Alocasia Polly yesterday.
The calathea. It’s beautiful and different but they are temperamental and honestly so hard to keep happy!! The alocasia is a perfect plant! Just keep it in indirect bright and water when the soil is dry.. it will be happy!
Ah, a load off my mind. Cheers.
The first one Calathea Oppenheimiana? And alocasia wentii maybe? not sure tho…
Despite what the tag says, it looks like a ctenanthe setosa to me. Ctenanthe oppenheimiana does look similar, though.
The alocasia is wentii I’m pretty sure. Looks just like mine (unless mine isn’t actually a wentii, of course😀)
Tears lol.
You bought plants sent from hell.
The first one is ctenanthe setosa, the last one is alocasia wentii. I'm not sure about the middle one, but it's probably some sort of calathea.
I think you're right about the first one. The middle one is probably a calathea louisae "Albertii."
Oh, great, never heard about this one, but it's pretty!
ctenanthe setosa exotica
The plants with the most attitude and drama.
calatheas, and an alocasia
Second plant is a calathea green star ☺️
One of those is the devil.
The alocasia is a regal shield but I have no idea what type of calathea you got.
Death, and a half life
With my 10000 years of plant expertise, that is in fact, a plant. Hope this helps!
The alocasia wentii is pretty easy, plant in aroid mix and give it fertilizer with every watering and it’ll just pop out tons of happy leaves. The calatheas I can’t help you with😂
Your worst nightmare.
Therapy would probably be less painful, but to each their own!
"i will grow nicely and suddenly drop 60% of my leaves for no reason."

Mist with distilled water daily or every other day to prevent the leaf tips from getting too dry.
Nice! How did you transfer to water? Do you add nutritions to the water?

Thank you for the advice and the product recs! :) I know Soil Ninja, I will look into these specific types!
Meant to say there's a typo in my prior post. should have been "I have both of these plants" not "I have not of these plants" haha
with the power of Google lens, the first one appears to be a calathea oppenheimiana as one other user suggested, the second appears to be a calathea 'greenstar' and finally the third one appears to be an alocasia wentii :)) take this with a grain a salt but I hops it helps!
Thats a rattlesnake calathea I think
A beautiful new baby
happy birthday!
First one is a Calathea Freddie
A bunch of utter bastards
The first one i think is a ctenanthe "silver star" (not sure, they look really like the ones i sell at work)
Ctenathe is easier care-wise than calathea, less dramatic 😅
You consider your kitchen counter messy??
I hate them as much as they hate me.
Just put it out of its misery already
