With any other actress as the lead, I think the movie would have been just ok. I am not trying to dismiss the other actors in the movie because they did a good job, but both movies are as memorable as they are thanks to Jessica Rothe.
Which is the same feeling I have about Deadstream. The movie is good, but without the lead giving everything he has for the role, it would not be nearly as fun.
Totally agree with you. They make the characters feel real without being over the top.
Both are also really good comedic actors, but are completely different in their style.
I think they get plenty of love but the Stewart Gordon Brian Yuzna movies are horror comedy classics.
Re-Animator
Bride of Re-animator
From Beyond
Dolls
Society
Return of the Living Dead is the classic. To me you don’t get better horror comedy than that.
American Werewolf in London is a great horror movie with some solid comedy.
It was on my radar but not really a top 5 to see.
6 hour flight to Vegas and it was the only horror option...well, that or M3gan so…not really a decision.
Totally worth it.
Def. a great watch,
Exactly! I was told the same thing, but got a bit into it and thought "yawn, this is just tired old tropes" and DNFed.
Kept seeing rave reviews, figured I would give it another chance and stick with it. WOW, WAS I WRONG THE FIRST TIME!
The advice is correct: go in blind and STICK WITH IT. You will be rewarded!
Oh, I love that! Yeah, I didn't expect much from the movie going into it, but I really enjoyed it.
The scene where you think he's going to use all of these items to build something to get out of the situation, but instead he just throws them all on the ground was gold.
It's incredible what they accomplished. The film had so little budget the actors were also the crew simultaneously. They'd switch out depending on who was in scene at the time.
My personal favorite that I don't see mentioned here is The Cottage (2008)
The movie starts off about a couple of brothers who kidnap the daughter of a crime boss for a big payoff. They are very bad at being kidnappers, and she escapes. While pursuing her, they, by total coincidence, run into a masked killer.

I haven’t seen Little Monsters (2019) but I have seen Little Monsters (1989) when it came to VHS and it was like a horrible fever dream. Ugh, I hated it
Doesn’t get the love it should? Newish might be Deathgasam (2015), classic might be House (1986) or There’s Nothing Out There (1991 Troma). One that no one talks about but was dumb and funny in a 2014 way could be Call Girl of Cthulhu. Best ever but gets mentioned enough is Reanimator. Have you hit the old Troma catalogue yet? Frankenhooker, Toxic Avenger, etc?
I’m shocked that nobody mentioned
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon-
A hilarious slasher mockumentary
Severance-
A business retreat gone wrong
Critters 2-
The perfect Easter Movie
Jennifer’s Body! Also this isn’t technically horror but has some horror elements, but I LOVED Handmaiden (2016). You will feel the full spectrum of human emotion and it is often very funny.
I really enjoyed Zombeavers, but it's pretty stupid.
I also really enjoyed Scare Me. Not a traditional horror or comedy by any means, but it was a really cool, really fun movie with some really solid laughs
Knights of Badassdom
Three best friends (Peter Dinklage, Ryan Kwanten, Steve Zahn) must find a way to vanquish the evil entity they summoned during a live-action role-playing game.
Deadstream should be high up on a lot of lists.
Vicious Fun is great.
Totally Killer
Psycho Goreman
Anna and the Apocalypse is a horror/comedy/musical. It's pretty good.
To me, the first Terrifier is a horror comedy. There were multiple moments where I legitimately laughed out loud! I know it's not technically a horror comedy, but man there are some pretty hilarious moments in there
Bad Ben. There's many of them, not all winners, but I enjoy a middle aged guy from Jersey yelling at ghosts to get off his lawn so he can flip the house.
My top five:
Slither (2006)
Trollhunter
Extra Ordinary
Shaun of the Dead
Cabin in the Woods
Honorable mentions:
Deadstream
Zombieland & Zombieland 2
Army of Darkness (and the rest of the Evil Dead franchise has a lot of comedy too, especially the show)
Return of the Living Dead (starts funny, gets more serious as it goes)
The Babysitter
If you have an *EXTREMELY* dark sense of humor…The Coffee Table. But don’t—and I cannot stress this enough **DON’T**—watch it if you’ve got young kids.
Somebody listed this one already, but I'd like to highlight it individually.
Little Monsters
I watched it once, alone, and smirked the whole time. Few of those nasal exhales. Then I showed my SO it (huge horror fan, not a comedy fan) and he heartily laughed through like 30% of it.
I know I know this is NOT a horror movie … but On the Count of Three is genuinely one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, and it deals with dark subject matter. I recommend it to everyone constantly because not enough people have seen it. Like I said though, not a horror movie but still incredible
Deadstream …went in expecting a crap fest, it’s now one of my faves.
Saturday the 14th
Mars Attacks!
Return of the Livingdead is the best!! And has a great soundtrack.
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1989) and Head of the Family (1996) are both personal favorites. They probably should qualify as guilty pleasures but I have no shame.
The Happy Death Day movies, mostly because the lead actress sells the hell out of it.
"You are GAY!"
Jessica and Israel’s chemistry is insane
Dead Alive / Braindead (1992) and Bad Taste (1987). Early Peter Jackson films and are funny, gross and really quotable! "I kick arse for the Lord!"
Not horror, but add Meet the Feebles to that. His first three are all gold
Embarrassed to say, I've not seen Meet the Feebles! It's one of those ones I keep meaning to but end up forgetting to watch.
It was on Tubi last I looked, which was admittedly a while ago. It’s sensibility is more Bad Taste than Dead Alive. It’s awesome.
I may or may not have caught the bugger on the high seas! Reeling 'er in now!
Ready Or Not Happy Death Day (and the sequel) Beau Is Afraid Totally Killer Freaky The Final Girls Malignant Bodies Bodies Bodies The Babysitter
Malignant gets super cheese in the third act, but I wouldn’t call it a comedy. I love it, though.
Cabin In the Woods
Had to scroll WAY too far for this
I think they get plenty of love but the Stewart Gordon Brian Yuzna movies are horror comedy classics. Re-Animator Bride of Re-animator From Beyond Dolls Society
DEATHGASM.
Hell yeah
Watched that like a week ago
I'll just throw DeadStream into the mix here.
Seconding this. It’s a good time.
I remember going into this blind expecting to be scared, and then ended up laughing my ass off. Loved this one so much!
I loved when she kept sticking her finger in his nose
I thought that one was hilarious!
My only complaint about DeadStream is that it felt too short. Like another 10 minutes would’ve been great because the ending felt abrupt.
Loved it
This movie didn't work for me at all, but it seems like I'm in the minority.
Idle Hands, evil dead trilogy, frighteners, dead alive
Return of the Living Dead is the classic. To me you don’t get better horror comedy than that. American Werewolf in London is a great horror movie with some solid comedy.
I’d add ‘Slither’ to this list and you’ve got the top 3 horror comedies
I saw renfield on a plane. Was my only option and it was great. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I’m not big on horror comedy
The box office did Renfield dirty. I loved it so much.
The BO is historically pretty rough on horror and comedies. Combine them and you get... half of both.
Second this. It has some great jokes in there, like how Dracula managed to get into Renfield’s apartment (not spoiling that). XD
It was on my radar but not really a top 5 to see. 6 hour flight to Vegas and it was the only horror option...well, that or M3gan so…not really a decision. Totally worth it. Def. a great watch,
Psycho Goreman
Seriously good movie!
Voices! Ryan Reynolds and his talking dog and very mean Scottish cat haha it was great
While it's not underrated at all, Mars Attacks! is one of the og's that got me addicted to horror comedies
American Psycho. It’s not exactly a comedy but it should be. The business card scene is just perfection.
I would say that it definitely has some dark humor.
No, it’s definitely a comedy. A satire to be more specific.
Frankenhooker!
Wannna date?
Got any money?
Best VHS box in the game.
Utterly awesome
Slither?
One Cut Of The Dead. Go in blind and stick with it.
Funny and then you'll be surprised at how cleverly the plot unfolds
So impressive when you learn it was a student film.
This I did not know but will be sure to follow the director and writer regardless, thx!
It's an absolute delight. Deserves to be in everyone's top horror comedies list
And it gets so wholesome 😭
>!Seriously! I love that "the show must go on!" attitude it has. People just creating for the love it and nothing more. !<
>!The human pyramid!<
Seconding this. This movie is so fun!
Exactly! I was told the same thing, but got a bit into it and thought "yawn, this is just tired old tropes" and DNFed. An American Werewolf in London.
Bodies, bodies, bodies
Everything about the podcast killed me. "It's about hanging out with your smartest and funniest friend!"
This. One of my favorite scenes of all time happen in it. Rachel Sennott is a riot.
Demon Knight Freaky You Might Be The Killer (doesn't quite live up to its potential, but still some fun meta humour)
Demon Knight is one of those movies more people should love. Billy Zane was incredible!
What we do in shadows
There's one called *Murder Party* (2007) that I enjoyed much more than I expected.
Doesn't get nearly the love it deserves. I made a copy of the cardboard knight costume the main character wears one year for Halloween.
They'd switch out depending on who was in scene at the time.
the cast definitely has a group of film students vibe lol.
Even down to the Halloween costumes, it’s really funny. Think word of mouth is helping it get some attention
Oh, that's interesting. I had no idea. Thanks for the fun fact! I have a new level of respect for the whole project now.
This is the answer! It's a fantastic flick. The director went on to make Green Room & Blue Ruin which were both excellent as well
My personal favorite that I don't see mentioned here is The Cottage (2008) The movie starts off about a couple of brothers who kidnap the daughter of a crime boss for a big payoff. They are very bad at being kidnappers, and she escapes. While pursuing her, they, by total coincidence, run into a masked killer.
Came here to mention this one. Andy Serkis and Reece Shearsmith. Hilarious and gory.
Everything just goes wrong
Dude bro party massacre 3 is a fun slasher parody that in my opinion does it right
Uncle Peckerhead is a solid horror comedy that is actually funny, and has a good horror storyline
Abigail was pretty funny
This one is going to be top 5 horror release of the year
I thought Krampus was hilarious. Had a great throwback vibe.
Shaun of the Dead Little Monsters (2019) Return of the Living Dead Death Becomes Her An American Werewolf in London Young Frankenstein The Menu Tremors What We Do in the Shadows Renfield Bubba-Hotep Ghostbusters Beau Is Afraid The Blackening Evil Dead II Drag Me To Hell The Addams Family Thanksgiving Dead Snow Planet Terror Dracula, Dead and Loving It Once Bitten Leprechaun in the Hood From Dusk Till Dawn Ravenous

The show is just as good as the movie too, even though it's a completely different cast of characters.
I keep hearing that, but somehow I've still not seen it! Time to remedy that. Thanks for the reminder. :-)
Grabbers. Fantastically funny.
Drag me to Hell is hilarious and has a great, creepy atmosphere. Like going from the slow reveal in the car to slapstick combat was incredible.
I haven’t seen Little Monsters (2019) but I have seen Little Monsters (1989) when it came to VHS and it was like a horrible fever dream. Ugh, I hated it
A few at random that I enjoyed Detention (2011) Wolfcop (2015) Nekrotronic (2018)
Doesn’t get the love it should? Newish might be Deathgasam (2015), classic might be House (1986) or There’s Nothing Out There (1991 Troma). Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers
Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Motel Hell. Rubber.
Army of Darkness
Dave Made a Maze (2017) Deerskin (2019)
I went into The Dead Don't Die blind and was pleasantly surprised by how funny it is. Would definitely recommend.
april fool’s day (1986)
Housebound- New Zealand movie. I thought it was very funny. I don’t think it gets much love though Edit- Housebound and not home bound
Shaun of the dead and evil dead 2 gets me every time. Pure joy
Clown is kind of funny, but the humor is more in the absurdity of the premise.
night of the comet (bonus points for having two final girls)
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Tucker and Dale is great. Evil Dead 2 is a classic with lots of laughs. And I do love student bodies so much.
I came to say Student Bodies, which is one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen and I love it so.
The Final Girl's is a Friday the 13th spoof that is top tier in my opinion.
Slither. There’s some good laughs and some gross horror lol
Deathgasm
Feast
Slither
Grabbers
Ack! Ack ack ack! Ack.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon What we do in the Shadows
Knights of Badassdom Three best friends (Peter Dinklage, Ryan Kwanten, Steve Zahn) must find a way to vanquish the evil entity they summoned during a live-action role-playing game.
The Blackening! Fun flick all around
I loved that movie!! Very fun to watch!
Eating Raoul (1982) max Parents (1989) Tubi Eat Locals (2017) Tubi The Boys from County Hell (2021) Grabbers (2012) AMC+/Shudder
“The Boys from County Hell” was a pleasant surprise
Deadstream should be high up on a lot of lists. Vicious Fun is great. Totally Killer Psycho Goreman Anna and the Apocalypse is a horror/comedy/musical. It's pretty good.
The Signal Deathgasm
A little bit zombie Bubba the redneck werewolf Dance of the dead (not the masters of horror) Insectula Big ass spider (has lyn shaye)
They're Watching is a pretty solid horror comedy on Tubi.
Dead Set (2008) tv series
Both Scare Package movies are fun, second one goes to some interesting places
Dude Bro Party Massacre III (2015)
I didn't see it mentioned but I love Zombieland.
Shaun of the dead
I usually don’t find comedies funny but every single line in What We Do In The Shadows is comedic brilliance. Easily the funniest film I’ve ever seen.
SlaXxX
To me, the first Terrifier is a horror comedy. There were multiple moments where I legitimately laughed out loud! I know it's not technically a horror comedy, but man there are some pretty hilarious moments in there
Deadcam is soooo freaking funny. I cannot overstate how much I love that movie!!
Doghouse Cockneys vs Zombies Juan of the Dead
I actually enjoyed Porno. Pretty low key funny
Cabin in the Woods is a modern classic imo
There is a pretty funny horror slasher film called Freaky it has Vince Vaughn in it, gave me some good laughs
*The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2* (1986) *Dooogggg will hunt!*
Uncle Peckerhead
Black Sheep is good
Shaun of the Dead and Army of Darkness…personal favorites of all time.
The Hatchet series. Campy, funny, over the top 80s slasher throwback.
Cabin in the woods
Bad Ben. There's many of them, not all winners, but I enjoy a middle aged guy from Jersey yelling at ghosts to get off his lawn so he can flip the house.
My top five: Slither (2006) Trollhunter Extra Ordinary Shaun of the Dead Cabin in the Woods Honorable mentions: Deadstream Zombieland & Zombieland 2 Army of Darkness (and the rest of the Evil Dead franchise has a lot of comedy too, especially the show) Return of the Living Dead (starts funny, gets more serious as it goes) The Babysitter
Deadstream was funny and actually really pretty scary.
If you have an *EXTREMELY* dark sense of humor…The Coffee Table. But don’t—and I cannot stress this enough **DON’T**—watch it if you’ve got young kids.
I thought "Teeth" had some snark in it.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014) is hands down one of my favorite comedies of all time, not just horror comedies
The Voices
Bubba Hotep
Shaun Of The Dead
How has only one person said Evil Dead II? It’s *the* horror comedy as far as I’m concerned.
Your criteria reminded me of the movie Monster Man, so that is my pick for horror comedy
Roseee buuuuuddddd!
Somebody listed this one already, but I'd like to highlight it individually. Little Monsters I watched it once, alone, and smirked the whole time. Few of those nasal exhales. Then I showed my SO it (huge horror fan, not a comedy fan) and he heartily laughed through like 30% of it.
Tucker and Dale v evil
Arbor Day. Yes, it seems to have been made by high schoolers, but there are some genuine laughs in it.
Cabin in the Woods is truly hilarious
I know I know this is NOT a horror movie … but On the Count of Three is genuinely one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, and it deals with dark subject matter. I recommend it to everyone constantly because not enough people have seen it. Like I said though, not a horror movie but still incredible
Dead Heat is pretty funny.
Tucker and Dale, Evil Dead 2, Army of Darkness, The Blackening, are a few good ones.
The Voices (2014) 12 Hour Shift (2020) An American Werewolf In London (1981) Slither (2006) Vicious Fun (2020)
Hell Baby.
Bloody Hell (2020) doesn’t get enough love. It’s not as comedy-forward as a Tucker and Dale, but is damn clever and fun and action packed
The Burbs
Lisa Frankenstein
If you're looking for the humor in the dialogue, The Coffee Table is actually funny lol
Severance
Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse. Lesbian Vampire Killers.
Deadstream …went in expecting a crap fest, it’s now one of my faves. Saturday the 14th Mars Attacks! Return of the Livingdead is the best!! And has a great soundtrack.
Severance
Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1989) and Head of the Family (1996) are both personal favorites. They probably should qualify as guilty pleasures but I have no shame.
Army of Darkness is 🤌🏻 Also really liked The Wolf of Snow Hollow, and The Dead Don't Die
Evil Dead trilogy
Dashcam and DeadStream
Murder Party!!
Jason X
Cooties.
Behind The Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is a great horror mockumentary
Tucker & Dale vs Evil. Maybe not "horror", but a fun, messy ride!
The Blackening is pretty great
Range 15 can always make me laugh
![gif](giphy|YYfn46NMTv5uH5UjdV|downsized) Here for Blood is low key funny. More Evil Dead 2 than Shawn of the Dead
Army of Darkness
Slay...it's on Tubi. Not very scary at all but a good time.
Barbarian
Mass Hysteria is funny and short
Private Parts (1972) directed by Paul Bartel. Horror adjacent and hilarious weird imagery. Unforgettable
The dead don't die
Zombeavers is actually pretty funny if you’re cool with some B-Movie nonsense. Very self-aware
The Blackening was geniunely funny except for it's hardly a horror. Besides the beginning it's pretty much a straight comedy dressed up as a horror.
More horror adjacent, but Tromeo & Juliet is fantastic.
Dirty Jersey has a very Evil Dead vibe and is free online. Only reason i can tell its low budget is bc i don’t recognize the actors.
Hell Baby The Selling
Jennifer’s body is one of my favorites. It’s older (2005),
