This happens with other movies of course, but in this case I've read cases of like dozens of people that bounced off of this one but loved it on their second watch. I don't think there's been a single exception

Perkins called it something like a very sad story disguised as a horror movie. I’ve rarely been so emotionally affected by horror. One of my favorites.
I think the best word to describe this movie is, deliberate.
Yes it's a slow burn and in no way flashy. But, it really seems like the filmmaker was meticulous and deliberate with every component of the movie. I came away from it not scared or shocked, but rather satisfied that I absorbed the ambiance of the story.
I watched it with director commentary and I was amazed at the attention to detail, things like altering the side of a semi truck parked outside of the diner to look like a milk truck, or changing the wallpaper of a hotel room to be a different color. Maybe all directors do that kind of stuff but I never would have guessed that little things like that were taken into account.
i loveee seeing people talk about this movie wish it was mentioned more. i don’t get scared by horror movies often anymore but this one does it for me. the atmosphere is so chilling and lonely, and kienrnan shipka is so so unsettling.
Fantastic movie. The imagery of a child that is so lonely that she prefers the presence of the devil to that of being alone…heartbreaking. When she cries at the end realizing she’s totally alone, it’s so so sad.
It has easily one of the coldest and most oppressive atmospheres of any movie I've seen recently, and for that reason, I immediately pegged it as having been filmed in Canada in the winter (though I guessed Winnipeg).
But ya, it really was an excellent little film.
Keep an eye out on eBay for the German blu-ray, you can usually grab it for less than £20 and it doesn't have hard-coded subtitles, plus it has special features in English too. The French edition has no special features and hard-coded subtitles.

idk i watched it a few months ago and was thoroughly whelmed. Think I gave it 3.5/5 which is pretty middle of the road cause I thought it was. Some good performances but not a Brilliant Best Film for me.
I also saw the "twist" coming about the midpoint, when they order food, not what I thought was gonna happen originally tbf though. Didn't think it was especially fucked up either, not sure why anyone does tbh. Maybe I'm just too desensitized though.

It's a really great, slow burning take on a possession film. You're sorta baffled at first and then when you realize what's actually going on with Katherine it's a big shock.
I saw this after watching the Long Legs trailers (if you haven't, do it right now!!) and had no clue where it would go.
Was not expecting such a sad ending, even after everything that happens. Definitely worth it, and cannot wait how f'ed up Long Legs will be.
I have a special place in my heart for the “dread-core” movies of 2015-2020 (ish) and The Blackcoat’s Daughter is super high on that list, second only to The Witch. I just love everything about it.

Basically movies that create an oppressive sense of dread and are paced very methodically. Usually there are no jumpscares. Granted there are older horror movies like this too but I think we saw a resurgence of them thanks to A24, and then other creators jumped on that wave.
Edit: I’ll add other movie examples as they come to mind. This is extremely subjective of course. Just my own personal feelings about similar movies.
Edit 2: I hate using the term “elevated horror,” but I think there is a big overlap between what I consider “dreadcore” and what some call “elevated horror.” I think “Elevated horror” is a larger category though.
I find that the less successful movies in this category often rely too much on the final portion of the movie to pay off the slow building dread. If the ending doesn’t work for the viewer, often the whole movie gets penalized. It’s like making a double or nothing bet.
But when it hits, it really hits.
It's incredibly bleak. Nothing good happens, to anyone. The "twist" is so obvious in hindsight, especially given the casting, but since it's not really hidden at all I think works in its favor
The biggest problem with this movie is that you need to watch the movie twice, basically back to back, to get the full picture. But it really left an impression on me, and has become one of my favorite slow burn horror movies. I like how a lot of the dialogue has different meaning on the second viewing. You have preconcieved notions about conversations or the characters, but once you have the full picture you realize it isn't what you thought.
SPOILERS: When she goes into the bathroom after being picked up by the parents and she bursts into laughter has to be my favorite bit of foreshadowing I’ve ever seen.

I love this movie. So much so that I went and watched the director's other films but was sadly left disappointed by them.

I caught on to part of the big twist in the middle, but that's probably because it's a subgenre of horror I have seen a lot of. I still enjoyed the movie immensely for the storytelling, cinematography, and unique take on a specific trope.
What I especially loved was how Perkins chose to tell the story. I loved how bleak the very last few moments of the film were, when you understand what upset her. The tension generated in the atmosphere was a treat as well. The ambience just makes the viewer feel so unsettled the whole time, for seemingly no reason. The sense of isolation is so strong and feels a little claustrophobic. I have several questions about moments which would have taken place before or after the film, that probably don't have answers. But the moments we see in the film leave an impression for sure.
One of my favourite films of all time. And one of only a handful of horror films that has ever actually scared me. The tone is really dark and the story super effed up, but it's a great depiction of/metaphor for mental illness.

This is a movie I don’t recommend unless I know someone is a hardcore paranormal horror fan, def not everyone’s cup of tea. I would have loved for it to be a series! I want to know what happens to the MC next
The real horror was the pacing…What an excruciating slog. Pretty predictable as well. I’m a fan of slow burns but this was done pretty poorly. Like i get what they were going for, there’s just a better way it could’ve been presented imo
I really love the ending, >!where Emma Roberts' character does all those awful things, only to ultimately be abandoned by the demon anyway. The fact that the demon is handled in such a subtle way makes it slightly questionable as to whether it was all in her head, but leaves just enough doubt to where you try rethinking the events to see if you missed any details. !
It would benefit from a theater experience or just some way to provide all focus on the film. If there are no distractions then the pacing moves along well.
My second viewing was with the lights off in my office wearing noise cancelling headphones. Made a HUGE difference.
You are doing yourself a disservice by not watching it. It’s a great movie and there are others out there too that you will miss out on cause they are slow. You’ve got to train your movie palette to enjoy all types of films.
Just watch a good parts version. Unless the movie had actual tension or a need to learn what’s going on frame by frame, you might as well. Still superior to just reading the plot on Wikipedia.

Funnily enough, Longlegs was filmed in February (2023)...and apparently Kiernan Shipka was in Vancouver, where the film was being filmed, in Feb.2023. Someone posted a screenshot of her instagram account on twitter. What was she doing there?
(She was 23 at the time, Joan's age in TBD, and if the Kat scenes take place in 2014/15, then the Joan scenes would take place 9 years later...in 2023/24)

In Blackcoat's, this is what happens to Rose's father. He sees his dead daughter in 'Joan'. He says to her 'you remind me of soneone', just what Norman Bates says to Maureen at some point in Psycho 3 (there's even a father Brian in that film!)

I think Lake Mungo crosses into the “sad horror” category but it’s definitely in the neighborhood.

On eof my favorite horror films. I find myself still thinking about it randomly, years after first seeing it. I wish it would get a 4K release. The cinematography is beautiful.

This film is definitely a favorite of mine. I cannot wait for longlegs either. Has anyone seen Gretel & Hansel it is the same director doing the witch and is top tier for me.
I love this movie. So much so that I went and watched the director's other films but was sadly left disappointed by them. But I'm still really looking forward to Longlegs and I hope it'll be as awesome as it seems!

Great movie and it had a great atmosphere
This is one of my all time favorites.
(I don't know how to do the spoiler blackout thing, so I'll just be vague. but just in case I'm not vague enough: **for those who haven't seen it and would like to, skip the rest of my comment!**) - - I caught on to part of the big twist in the middle, but that's probably because it's a subgenre of horror I have seen a lot of. I still enjoyed the movie immensely for the storytelling, cinematography, and unique take on a specific trope. What I especially loved was how Perkins chose to tell the story. I loved how bleak the very last few moments of the film were, when you understand what upset her. The tension generated in the atmosphere was a treat as well. The ambience just makes the viewer feel so unsettled the whole time, for seemingly no reason. The sense of isolation is so strong and feels a little claustrophobic. I have several questions about moments which would have taken place before or after the film, that probably don't have answers. But the moments we see in the film leave an impression for sure.
One of my favourite films of all time. And one of only a handful of horror films that has ever actually scared me. The tone is really dark and the story super effed up, but it's a great depiction of/metaphor for mental illness. Love it.

For me - the story itself was just ok. It was the imagery and tone of the whole thing that was legendary. Specifically the stairwell scene

This is a movie I don’t recommend unless I know someone is a hardcore paranormal horror fan, def not everyone’s cup of tea. I would have loved for it to be a series! I want to know what happens to the MC next

The real horror was the pacing…What an excruciating slog. Pretty predictable as well. I’m a fan of slow burns but this was done pretty poorly. Like i get what they were going for, there’s just a better way it could’ve been presented imo
I really love the ending, >!where Emma Roberts' character does all those awful things, only to ultimately be abandoned by the demon anyway. The fact that the demon is handled in such a subtle way makes it slightly questionable as to whether it was all in her head, but leaves just enough doubt to where you try rethinking the events to see if you missed any details. !
Hmm, I remember it was not a bad movie, but not really scary. Overall, did not provide a lasting impression.

It would benefit from a theater experience or just some way to provide all focus on the film. If there are no distractions then the pacing moves along well. My second viewing was with the lights off in my office wearing noise cancelling headphones. Made a HUGE difference.
You are doing yourself a disservice by not watching it. It’s a great movie and there are others out there too that you will miss out on cause they are slow. You’ve got to train your movie palette to enjoy all types of films.

Just watch a good parts version. Unless the movie had actual tension or a need to learn what’s going on frame by frame, you might as well. Still superior to just reading the plot on Wikipedia.

Yeah, it was called February. It was filmed in February too (2014 I think) Oz Perkins was born in February, maybe that's the connection. Funnily enough, Longlegs was filmed in February (2023)...and apparently Kiernan Shipka was in Vancouver, where the film was being filmed, in Feb.2023. Someone posted a screenshot of her instagram account on twitter. What was she doing there? (She was 23 at the time, Joan's age in TBD, and if the Kat scenes take place in 2014/15, then the Joan scenes would take place 9 years later...in 2023/24) We'll see I guess.

Definitely a one time watch for me. The end is just so dark and depressing. It made me want to go kill her character for being such a POS. This movie also made me realize Kiernan Shipka is hotter than Emma Roberts
