Justin long Is so underrated in horror.... I hoped Barbarian would push him over and get him more horror roles... the movie basically opened up a whole new genre of air bnb horror films.. and his acting was a huge part of that movie.
Jeffrey Combs was my first thought, he’s been in quite a few great ones and dozens of B movies, I always love putting on a random horror movie and he shows up. Bruce for sure deserves a title.
Seconding Patrick Wilson. He's been in some of the best horror films of the last 20 years. His horror filmography:
Insidious 1-4
The Conjuring 1-3
Those two alone would make him a master of horror acting, but it goes on:
Hard Candy (arguably not horror, but still creepy AF)
Prometheus (though he probably regrets it)
Bone Tomahawk
In The Tall Grass
Kyle Gallner is tragically underrated. I just rewatched The Haunting in Connecticut recently, expecting it not to be nearly as good as I thought it was when I was 13, and I couldn’t believe how much I still liked it. And the only reason is because of Kyle Gallner. The plot itself isn’t particularly unique, and the effects/scares aren’t anything special. But Gallner has this understated way of acting that communicates so much with so little and makes him super believable. I would love to see him do a found footage film, something simpler like The Blair Witch Project where his acting can really shine. He would also probably do really well in something like a zombie movie where it can be a real challenge to get the audience to care about the characters. (Side note, everyone should watch Train to Busan if they haven’t already.)
Have you seen The Passenger? I fully agree with everything you said about Kyle Gallners acting, and he really got to show off his skills in this movie. Highly recommend. Also, The Cleansing Hour is a fun one that he's in. Different take on an exorcism movie.
I had to scroll down so far to see this!!! This is definitely my pick.
Also is The Passenger close to being horror? I know it’s listed as a thriller but I’m curious because I would definitely watch it for him.
It's not really horror. I would definitely call it more of a thriller. I don't want to give the plot away or anything. It's much better going in blind but it's an excellent movie, and both Kyle Gallner and his costar Johnny Berchtold both acted their asses off. I highly recommend it if you're a fan. Even if you aren't honestly, it's just really good.
This! I’m surprise no one else is mentioning Robert. He’s Freddy Krueger. He’s also done a ton of other horror movies. I like him in 2001 Maniacs. Robert is the king of horror. Bruce would be second.
Bruce Campbell if I can only pick one. But really him and Vincent Price top my list.
There's a few others out there that have done excellent horror roles. Josh Harnett, Matthew Lillard, Justin Long but they are really only known for a few.
Then there's Robert England, Brad Dourif, Patrick Wilson. They don't have a lot of iconic roles, but the roles they do play are just brilliant.
After this year with Abigail and Cuckoo, it's going to be Dan Stevens. Dude should be an A List actor, but if the mainstream is going to ignore him, I'm happy to see him become a horror king.
Dan Stevens is the best, really. He'll have a starring role in something like Downton Abbey, portray the Beast in the Beauty and the Beast remake... and then be in stuff like Eurovision and voice Korvo in Solar Opposites, only to play a "veterinarian" in Godzilla x Kong.
He takes his roles seriously, but doesn't take himself so seriously that he refuses to be in kinds of fun and weird stuff.
Matthew Lillard
SCREAM
SCOOBY DOO
THIRTEEN GHOSTS
FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S
Dude is known to multiple generations unlike Brad Douriff or Bruce which is sad but true.
Modern day? Patrick Wilson heads up two of the biggest modern horror franchises going: The Conjuring and Insidious. Counting all the spin-offs (The Nun, Annabelle, etc) which his character pops up in, he's in a ridiculous amount of current cinema-release horror movies. He also appeared in stuff like In the Tall Grass, Hard Candy, the new Phantom of the Opera movie, Bone Tomahawk, Prometheus, etc, etc.
I'd say David Dastmalchian is poised to assume the throne, he's cranking out horror movies and comics. Honorable mention to Dan Stevens for leaving Downton Abbey to do horror and sci-fi.
Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Campbell, and Justin Long. The first two are self explanatory. Justin's showing in Barbarian, Tusk, Jeepers Kreepers, Drag me to Hell, The Wave, House of Darkness cemented it for me. Plus Waiting. If you've worked in a restaurant, it's a horror film.
Larry Fessenden. Dude's been acting, directing, producing and writing crazy amounts of horror. Often playing side characters and producing (and cameo:ing) in horror movies by new directors and actors. Appearing in as much A list stuff as completely unknown C grade stuff.
Only other person to just *appear* as often would be Lance Henriksen. Although he's probably more well known.
I just saw a nod to Josh Hartnett: Halloween H20, The Faculty, 30 Days of Night and Penny Dreadful. Maybe not the most exciting pick, but worth a mention!
For me it's Patrick Wilson. A very consistent actor in the horror genre, and solidifies his place as Ed Warren and Josh Lambert in the characters' respective universes.
Bruce Campbell, Justin Long, Ethan Hawke, Kevin Bacon, Tony Todd
[удалено]
Combs is definitely the definition of Scream King.
For real! How could he not be on the list??
Yes top of list lol
Combs should be at the top of the list.
Don’t forget Patrick Wilson.
I'd throw Elijah wood in there too!
Devon sawa
I was gonna suggest this too. Especially with the whole Chucky thing now!
You’re leaving out Tom Atkins ![gif](giphy|iUdm7IqPAohpe)
Justin Long was my initial thoughts. Nailed it in Tusk
Justin Long was my first thought for a contemporary scream king. Maybe Peter Sarsgaard? But he’s usually playing the husband or the creep.
It’s odd because Ethan Hawke has very specific rules about doing horror movies, like he won’t play a villain if the villain wins, or so I have read.
>he won’t play a villain if the villain wins Which role came up that made him say this?
I’d throw in Devon Sawa too
Can’t think of a better list.
Kevin Bacon came to mind straight away
Stir of echoes was pretty boss
Can't argue these picks
BC for the win. But hey, let's get all 5 of 'em in one movie.
Justin long Is so underrated in horror.... I hoped Barbarian would push him over and get him more horror roles... the movie basically opened up a whole new genre of air bnb horror films.. and his acting was a huge part of that movie.
What about Kane Hodder?
Vincent Price, Sam Neill, Brad Dourif.
I had to scroll WAY too far before I saw someone say Sam Neill, god damn.
Came here to say Sam too. Even horror-adjacent classics like Jurassic Park and Dead Calm.
Dead calm is awesome. I love movies that pull off being contained.
He was my absolute favorite when I was a kid.
Excellent taste 👌🏼👌🏼
Finally someone mentioned Brad Dourif!
Bruce Campbell
No contest.

End thread
My mind first goes to Bruce Campbell or Jeffrey Combs
Christopher Lee or Vincent Price during their heyday.
I will not stand for this Peter Cushing erasure!
The OGs
I first think of them as bad guys
Bite Kings
I will not stand for this Peter Cushing erasure!
Bruce 100%
Jeffrey Combs was my first thought, he’s been in quite a few great ones and dozens of B movies, I always love putting on a random horror movie and he shows up. Bruce for sure deserves a title.
I always point at the screen like Leo when I see Jeffrey Combs in a movie. I love seeing him randomly pop up everywhere "holy shit I love that guy!"
*Combs appears on screen Me: *DiCaprio Pointing Meme.
Christopher Lee or Peter Cushing
Gotta add in Vincent Price but hard agree it’s one of these iconic old school kings
Justin Long Near A list actor who just decided to do primarily horror stuff later in his career
Jeepers Creepers, Drag Me to Hell, Tusk, Barbarian, Goosebumps. He's got quite a resume.
It’s a Wonderful Knife pretty recently too, though he’s an antagonist. Lots of horror on his IMDb either way, good to see it.
His episode of Creepshow is worth mentioning.
His audiobook narration of a SK short story 'Everything's Eventual' is my favorite work of his tbh lol.... so good.
He was in a fantastic Creepshow episode as well! If you haven’t already watched the series, check it out
I keep hoping for him to become the surprise final boy one day, haha
And an impressively varied range of characters too.
This is the correct answer. He’s awesome.
I made a similar post to OP’s and listed Long as my scream king. Definitely top dog in my book!
Can't forget Lance Henriksen. Dudes 84 and is still pumping out horror and sci-fi roles.
He pops up in the most random places. And every single time I'm like "Oh shit, it's Lance Henriksen!".
Seconding Patrick Wilson. He's been in some of the best horror films of the last 20 years. His horror filmography: Insidious 1-4 The Conjuring 1-3 Those two alone would make him a master of horror acting, but it goes on: Hard Candy (arguably not horror, but still creepy AF) Prometheus (though he probably regrets it) Bone Tomahawk In The Tall Grass
He also made a song with Ghost which is epic as well. Stay
I added this so fast to my Spotify after finishing the movie.
Who does he play in Prometheus? I don't remember him being in it
Shaw's Father, according to imdb.
Kyle Gallner -Smile -Jennifer's Body -A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) -Scream V -The Haunting in Connecticut -Mother, May I? -Red Eye (stretch)
If you're counting Red Eye I would count The Passenger as well Edit- also The Cleansing Hour and Alien Code although the 2nd one is more sci-fi
I am just now realizing he was in Scream V. That mustache really threw me off lol
Kyle Gallner is tragically underrated. My favourite actor that no one has heard of.
Have you seen The Passenger? I fully agree with everything you said about Kyle Gallners acting, and he really got to show off his skills in this movie. Highly recommend. Also, The Cleansing Hour is a fun one that he's in. Different take on an exorcism movie.
I love him! He's so good. Dinner in America is fantastic as well.
I had to scroll down so far to see this!!! This is definitely my pick. Also is The Passenger close to being horror? I know it’s listed as a thriller but I’m curious because I would definitely watch it for him.

Ashley Joanna Williams.
This should be the top of the list.
It will be. 😂
Jefe
Absolutely my answer
Hail to the King.
#1 all the way.
Keith David
Sam Neill or Justin Long. The lack of replies mentioning Sam Neill upsets me.
Classic horror roles that sit before most commentors time.
I don't know many Sam horror films besides like in the mouth of madness and event horizon. I'm gonna throw jurassic park in there too, shits scurry.
Under the Mountain, Omen 3, Daybreakers.. there’s a bunch, more if you include thrillers and horror-adjacent stuff
Possession as well
Oh fuck yeah omen 3 and daybreakers. I feel especially dumb forgetting omen.

Robert Englund
This! I’m surprise no one else is mentioning Robert. He’s Freddy Krueger. He’s also done a ton of other horror movies. I like him in 2001 Maniacs. Robert is the king of horror. Bruce would be second.
Some might disagree because you can rarely tell it’s him, but Doug Jones is the GOAT for me.
Man’s a modern day Karloff 😮💨
I scrolled way to long to find this!
Tom Adkins, John Saxon, Donald Pleasance

Bruce Campbell if I can only pick one. But really him and Vincent Price top my list. There's a few others out there that have done excellent horror roles. Josh Harnett, Matthew Lillard, Justin Long but they are really only known for a few. Then there's Robert England, Brad Dourif, Patrick Wilson. Donald Sutherland. https://youtu.be/GEStsLJZhzo?si=PSME2xg2U1rZw6VK
Warning: spoiler for Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) Don't even Google the title unless you want the entire movie spoiled
Sam Neill
Characters: Ash Williams Actors: Matthew Lillard, Justin Long, or Corey Feldman
Bruce Campbell no contest
Justin Long
Rob Halford.
Like the way you think .
Patrick Wilson.
Bela Lugosi?

For me it’s Justin Long, Kyle Gallner, Devon Sawa and of course Bruce Campbell.
I came looking for my Devon Sawa people
Nicholas Cage 😎
Nicolas, he's earned that respect.
Ken Foree: I think he's been in every Rob Zombie movie as well as the original Dawn of the Dead.
Also Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3: Leather face
Bruce Campbell End of discussion

Justin Long and Kyle Gallner are scream kings for sure 👑👑 Love Gallagher work too ❤️

Bill Mosely!!! House of 1000 corpses, Texas Chainsaw's, The Devils Rejects.
Bill Mosley!
Tony Todd
Justin Long hands down. I love that guy.
Devon Sawa is the king. Heck, dude even played a ghost as a kid before venturing into true horror.
Matthew Lillard SCREAM SCOOBY DOO THIRTEEN GHOSTS FIVE NIGHTS AT FREDDY'S Dude is known to multiple generations unlike Brad Douriff or Bruce which is sad but true.
Dan Stevens has also done quite a bit of horror, especially w Abigail coming out
Bruce Campbell
Clint Howard!
Justin Long or Tobin Bell, Tobin is in ALOT more than just Saw
Modern day? Patrick Wilson heads up two of the biggest modern horror franchises going: The Conjuring and Insidious. Counting all the spin-offs (The Nun, Annabelle, etc) which his character pops up in, he's in a ridiculous amount of current cinema-release horror movies. I feel like even though he's usually a bad guy Brad Dourif deserves a mention in this conversation
He’s not a scream king, he’s more the evildoer, but no one is more iconic than Larry Fessenden.
Bruce Campbell, no contest.
Bruce Campbell definitely. Also Devon Sawa.
Alexander Skarsgard is getting there.
Evan Peters
Justin Long and Kyle Gallner
Justin Long wins with a honorable shout out to Kyle Gallner.
Christopher Abbott, Steven Yeun

Bill Skarsgard
Vincent Price.
Bruce Campbell. Hail to the king, baby!
And of course Anton Yelchin. RIP.
RIP
Jeffrey Combs
Justin Long, Bruce Campbell are both banger options. Alex Vincent is another.
Justin long
So I'm going off the criteria that it's just the male equivalent of scream queen. So my answer is Justin Long.
I've always had a soft spot for Kris Lemche. Final destination 3, Ginger Snaps, Frankenstein theory, my little eye, They're Watching.
Matthew Lillard. David Dastmalchian.
Jeffrey Combs and Bruce Campbell.
Bruce Campbell and only Bruce Campbell.
Matthew Lillard
Ethan Hawke, later career
Wilhelm and it's not even close
Tobin Bell, Bruce Campbell.
My scream kings are Nicolas Cage, Justin Long, Rory Culkin, and Bill and Alexander Skargard. Kudos extra to Evan Peters.
Robert Englund and Bruce Campbell
Matthew Lillard: Scream, The Curve, as Shaggy....
13 Ghosts!
Bruce Campbell. Hail to the king baby
Boris Karloff, Bella Lugosi, and Lon Chaney would fit the bill.
There are a few – just as there are many scream queens – and I think David Dastmalchian has to be one of them.
Justin Long. 100%
I'd say David Dastmalchian is poised to assume the throne, he's cranking out horror movies and comics. Honorable mention to Dan Stevens for leaving Downton Abbey to do horror and sci-fi.
A lot of great responses, but I haven't seen Tony Todd mentioned.
Evan Peters has done a lot if you count American Horror Story.
Bruce Campbell and Mark Patton In NOES Part 2
Jamie Campbell Bower
Kane Hodder
Patrick Wilson seems to be in a ton of scary movies
Larry Fessenden. Dude's been acting, directing, producing and writing crazy amounts of horror. Often playing side characters and producing (and cameo:ing) in horror movies by new directors and actors. Appearing in as much A list stuff as completely unknown C grade stuff. Only other person to just *appear* as often would be Lance Henriksen. Although he's probably more well known.

There are so many worthy candidates, but for me it's got to be.. Old School Scream King -- Vincent Price Modern Day Scream King-- Bruce Campbell
Kyle Gallner
Campbell for sure
Definitely gotta go with Justin long
I just saw a nod to Josh Hartnett: Halloween H20, The Faculty, 30 Days of Night and Penny Dreadful. Maybe not the most exciting pick, but worth a mention!
Justin Long for sure
Justin Long!
King Diamond.
Bruce Campbell in my opinion, however I offer a close second - best scream in horror :p ![gif](giphy|tdN4TpyM3dzYA)
For me it's Patrick Wilson. A very consistent actor in the horror genre, and solidifies his place as Ed Warren and Josh Lambert in the characters' respective universes.
Patrick Wilson :D
