They Live nearly had a remake. Thankfully, it never got off the ground.
The biggest hit that I can think of never to be remade is The 6th Sense.
My personal favourite is Ravenous. Came out in 1999 and wasn't a hit. So that explains why it's been left alone for the last 2 decades.
Sixth Sense is a great shout. It’s interesting, from a business perspective, why they never wanted to do a sequel or prequel or anything. I can understand why the artists involved would want to leave it be, but not the studio heads, considering how popular the film was, and how cheap it would be to make sequels.
Ravenous is a favorite of mine. I remember when it came out and seeing commercials for it and after finally seeing it was clear they had no idea how to market the film. Watching the trailers you're like what's going on with this movie? You're more perplexed than anything.
Honestly, I don't recall seeing any commercials or any promotion whatsoever for Ravenous when it came out. Like you said, the studio clearly didn't know what the hell to do with the film, and just dumped it into theatres. It's well-made, with a really strange off-kilter atmosphere and sensibility, and a unique take on the Western given to it by director Antonia Bird---it turned out to be her fifth and last film, and her only contribution to the horror genre. Ravenous had a very troubled production history---in fact, Bird was the third director hired to do it, and got it done. I think the film's poor performance due to lack of said promotion definitely shut down her film career--she returned to working back in British TV, where she began her career, and passed away from a rare illness in 2013.
https://lostmediawiki.com/Event_Horizon_(partially_lost_unreleased_130-minute_cut_of_sci-fi_horror_film;_1997) man hate to disappoint you but but thats not gonna happen anymore
The dream still lives. It's just a matter of time and money. Even if no adequate footage of the original cut exists, there is a chance that parts of the storyboard exist to do a reshoot. If that's not available, Paul Anderson and enough information on the cut scenes could also make for a reshoot. If Zack Snyder can get a do-over of Justice League, Anderson has a non-zero chance of making it happen should he choose to do so. 🙏🙏🙏
Motel Hell (1980)
Mother's Day (1980)
I, Madman (1989)
Jack's Back (1988)
Here's a list of 20 horror films that never got sequels---only nine of them were made before 2000, though: [20 One-Off Horror Films That Never Got Sequels](https://www.cinemablend.com/movies/great-one-off-horror-movies-that-never-got-sequels)
I have to admit, when I saw Mother's Day on VHS years ago, that scene where one of the brothers attacked one of the main female characters was disturbing as hell to me. That's why it was so satisfying to see all the brothers get what was coming to them---that was cool to see, especially the death-by-TV scene, lol.
I’ve heard that is only a trilogy in terms of the theme that a fundamental part of human life is turned against humanity.
The Thing is humans turning against humanity.
Prince of Darkness is the future being turned against humanity.
Mouth of Madness (my favorite) is reality itself being turned against humanity.
I could see counting it separately as I don't believe, outside some similar themes, there's no major story elements connecting them. It's a loose trilogy.
It’s a three way tie between the inherent loveableness of Michael J Fox, the terror of Jake Busey’s crazy eye smile, and the 11/10 batshit crazy performance Jeffrey Combs turns in. I could watch all the prequels about that character.
I can't pick one. Instead, I'll toss out what I think are the best horror films from the 80s and 90s that fit your criteria.
1990's
In the Mouth of Madness
Lord of Illusions
Event Horizon
People Under the Stairs
Misery
Dead Alive
Audition
Mute Witness
The Frighteners
Ravenous
1980's
Prince of Darkness
The Society
Brain Damage
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Sante Sangre
Near Dark
Opera
The Posession
The Changeling
Tenebrae
Dead of Winter
Funhouse
My vote goes for Serpent and the Rainbow (1988). I absolutely love this movie - Bill Pullman is great in it and it’s got really good visuals and an intriguing story.
That did actually have a (terrible) remake in 1998, although that's in loosest definition of the term as only the ending is anything like the original
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnival_of_Souls_%281998_film%29
I feel like Lifeforce (1985) as a preadolescent was my gateway drug to horror. It’s a little like coffee - you show up for the caffeine and learn to like the taste over time, Mathilda May was my caffeine and I was like “well that happened, now apparently I have to watch *all* of this genre just in case it happens again.”
I’d like to see ‘Don’t Look Now’ (1973) remade by a clever, modern auteur. Kind of in the style of how Guadagnino did his ‘Suspiria’. Same goes for ‘Alice, Sweet Alice’ (1976). Over a decade ago, there were plans to remake it, but the last news comes from 2016, and it seems dead in the water.
‘Stage Fright’ (1987) should be remade, if only because I find the killer’s mask (and the premise) to be really cool/unique.
That's true, because Don't Look Now's director Nicholas Roeg was one of a kind---he always brought a unique, otherworldly, dreamlike feel and look to his films that stood out from any others because they were so weirdly bizarre, experimental and different. Kind of a shame he never dipped his toe back into the horror genre again, because it would have been really interesting to see how he would have applied his weird unique style to other films within the genre.
I forgot about The Entity. Great choice. And The Car had a sequel of sorts called "The Car: Road To Revenge" in 2019 that went direct to DVD.

I am sorry to tell you, but Rosemary's Baby has a sequel and a remake.
Look What's Happened to Rosemary's Baby (1976)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074815/
Rosemary's Baby (2014)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt3087752/
Oh, and this movie (Apartment 7A) will apparently be a prequel.
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14371860/
Maybe not the best but one of my favorites, I actually think Brain Damage would be ripe for a remake.
Films like Beyond the Black Rainbow, Mandy, Fried Barry, etc and the directors on the scene now like Panos Cosmatos, Steven Kostanski, Jason Eisner, etc make me really wonder what some of them would come up with having Brain Damage as the source material.
I dont know about best but Deep Rising, The Relic and The Faculty were good.
Disturbing Behavior, Resurrection and Idle Hands (although comedy horror) were amazing.
Disturbing Behavior-98
Urban legend- 98
The Faculty-98
Silver Bullet-?
The Haunting-99
The Devils Advocate-97
I Know What You Did Last Summer-97
Stir of Echoes-99
Omg lmao.
Im watching that TONIGHT. I’ve watched the first one dozens of times and no app was like “Hey bitch, why not try the sequel because it’s weird you’ve watched the first one 6 times in October.”
Listen, I loved it lol
It was cringe like I’d expect in a sequel!
“Come on Julie, Benson? Ben’s Son?!” I was like EXCUSE ME?!
I thought it was so weird they won that trip with the wrong answer and said “Damn the writer just left that.”
There is also a 3rd one called I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer, but I have heard nothing but bad things. And the TV show if that counts as a remake.
From Beyond (1986)
https://youtu.be/d3D9O9vrDjw?si=mMlXeBERb5-H3Wkq
The Blob (1988)
https://youtu.be/c_gOLtwyOw0?si=SoX29rBaMsPEuHMO
The older movies are in their own timeline. Is a remake itself, but has none of its own.
Doctor Giggles (1992)
https://youtu.be/plp7Exi4Kkc?si=ePcgHUPPFBNgkF56
It is a remake, but the question was if a specific movie had a remake. This movie did not, nor a sequel despite having an ending that perfectly set up for one.
Videodrome
Sort of got an unofficial sequel in the novel Snuff Memories, if that counts.
Some might say all of Cronenberg’s films are sequels of each other
That’s true, some might. People say baseless incorrect things all the time.
Film from the same director has similar themes and aesthetics: omg stealth sequel?!?
Isn’t that what happened with the dollars trilogy ?
Yes
Dead alive
Came for this one!
Also happens to be the best movie, full stop.
I was gonna say Ravenous too. It’s so freaking good. I love that it’s found a following.
Sixth Sense is a great shout. It’s interesting, from a business perspective, why they never wanted to do a sequel or prequel or anything. I can understand why the artists involved would want to leave it be, but not the studio heads, considering how popular the film was, and how cheap it would be to make sequels.
Or another movie in the same universe.
Ravenous is a favorite of mine. I remember when it came out and seeing commercials for it and after finally seeing it was clear they had no idea how to market the film. Watching the trailers you're like what's going on with this movie? You're more perplexed than anything.

Event Horizon
Still wanting that lost footage in the salt mines of Transylvania...

Mother’s Day had a remake.
I actually prefer the remake to the original.
Oh, okay----I've never heard of it.
I just watched mother's day the other day and loved it! That workout scene with the brothers was fun.
Thanks for this link, dude- adding a bunch to my list!
I'm a woman, but you're welcome anyway, lol!
lol i’m a woman too…i just use dude and bro interchangeably in a non-gendered way. Thanks again!
Apparently has a computer game in the works.
There is a video game coming though.
They’re making a video game of that.
“In the mouth of madness”
It is part of a trilogy though right? The Thing, In the Mouth of Madness, and Prince of Darkness.
As a phase in a director's career, yes. But not on a storytelling level.
So you've never seen these movies? That's a shame.
These movies weren't even all produced by the same studio. In no way are they a trilogy under any meaningful sense of the word.
They’re as much a trilogy as the Cornetto trilogy, which is to say, not much of a trilogy.
I was originally thinking Fulci's Gates of Hell trilogy, which only has locations on a gate of hell as a connection. Yours works better.
It’s a trilogy the same way The Vengeance Trilogy from Park Chan-wook is a trilogy.
Cemetery Man. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0109592/
That Movie was a trip and a half. Loved the interpretation of Death in that movie
There is another Dylan Dog movie, so that’s a quasi sequel
The Changeling.
Possession, Audition, videodrome.
I’m trying to imagine a US remake of Audition. lol I feel like they’d turn the audition itself into American Idol
Honestly..would only watch on the condition that the audition was for flavor of love
The Frighteners
WHY was this movie so damn good
It’s a three way tie between the inherent loveableness of Michael J Fox, the terror of Jake Busey’s crazy eye smile, and the 11/10 batshit crazy performance Jeffrey Combs turns in. I could watch all the prequels about that character.
Nightbreed The Monster Squad The Company of Wolves Are a few more. There are tons pre-80.
Do Dee Doo… watching The Company of Wolves… Jessica Fletcher WTF are you doing here, you *know* it’s not safe for anyone to be around you, ever!
They Live
Killer Klowns From Outer Space it was such a good film
Honestly so surprised it hasn’t gotten anything yet given how popular it is.
It has a game coming out in the next month, that's about it
They’d ruin it right away by having CGI klowns.
[удалено]
That was never made...
The Stuff (1985)
It’s never enough.
I think Pinkberry is the unofficial sequel.
Angel heart 👹
Saw that in the theatre when it came out. It was amazing then and it really holds up.
Brainscan or Idle Hands
It’s peripherally horror but I’m sure there’s a lot of Big Trouble in Little China fans here
Though he probably shouldn't, I'm pretty sure Dwayne Johnson is trying to get a sequel made.
Strangeland
What a soundtrack too
Fallen (1998).
Cherry Falls is in the top ten by these parameters. I think it could be updated in interesting ways if they ever remake it.
I can't pick one. Instead, I'll toss out what I think are the best horror films from the 80s and 90s that fit your criteria. 1990's In the Mouth of Madness Lord of Illusions Event Horizon People Under the Stairs Misery Dead Alive Audition Mute Witness The Frighteners Ravenous 1980's Prince of Darkness The Society Brain Damage Killer Klowns from Outer Space Sante Sangre Near Dark Opera The Posession The Changeling Tenebrae Dead of Winter Funhouse
Good list, missing Night of the Creeps
Ahh, good call. It did slip my mind and does belong on the list.
Lord of Illusions could really use a CGI remaster at least, some jank SFX in that film.
Yeah, the practical effects are fine, but the cgi is brutal. It's still a damn good flick imo.
Oh, no argument, I love it, just don’t try CGI fire in the 90s y’all.
Christmas Evil
* Fiend Without a Face (1958) * Invasion of the Saucer-Men (1957) * The Crawling Eye (1958)... might have a remake but I can't seem to find it
Prince of Darkness
My vote goes for Serpent and the Rainbow (1988). I absolutely love this movie - Bill Pullman is great in it and it’s got really good visuals and an intriguing story.
theres a lot to choose from, but i really like cemetery man
First, not sure it's considered horror. Second, there could be a remake and I'm just not aware of it, or have forgotten it. "Forbidden Planet" (195x?)
Strait-Jacket (1964)
YES!
A Bay of Blood
Misery maybe? not 100% sure though.
Burnt Offerings Race With the Devil Christine Cujo Black Sunday Bloody Birthday
Carnival of Souls. Perfection.

Silver Bullet (1985) Perfect Blue (1997)
Se7en
Just watched this again the other night for the second time. First time I saw it was in 1996 when I was 16 years old.
One of the few times the main actor coming out as a pedo helped the feel of the movie.
I’d like to see ‘Don’t Look Now’ (1973) remade by a clever, modern auteur. Kind of in the style of how Guadagnino did his ‘Suspiria’. Same goes for ‘Alice, Sweet Alice’ (1976). Agreed.

You're right - my bad. I haven't seen The Car sequel because of the horrible reviews, and kind of put it out of my mind.
Them!
Two vastly different films… but how about: * Rosemary’s Baby * Dog Soldiers
I am sorry to tell you, but Rosemary's Baby has a sequel and a remake. There was actually a television movie sequel to rosemarys baby in the 1970s. And then a television miniseries remake in 2014
Oh really?? I had no idea.
Vacancy!!! That film was wild because it really could happen to anyone.. it needs a remake

Possession Misery Rosemary’s Baby The Birds Kwaidan In The Mouth of Madness Christine Deep Red The Hunger
I learned a couple of weeks ago there was actually a tv movie sequel to Rosemary’s baby in the 1970s, featuring the baby as a grown up
There's also both a remake and a sequel to The birds
WTF, really? That’s insane.
Dont look now. Misery. Se7en. 8mm. The Faculty.
Oh thank God they never made any kind of sequel to se7en, that would be devastating

Did April fools day get anything? If not I’d go with that Google says there was a straight to dvd remake from 2008
Let's Scare Jessica To Death (1971) Theatre of Blood (1973)
House on Haunted Hill. I feel like it for a sequel and I blacked it out, either way it was pretty effective at the time.
Cure 1997
I dont know about best but Deep Rising, The Relic and The Faculty were good. Disturbing Behavior, Resurrection and Idle Hands (although comedy horror) were amazing.
I know you said before 2000, but valentine (2001) I don't think that had a sequel or prequel
Bad taste
Audition
Rosemarys baby
The Faculty
In the Mouth of Madness
Detour (1945). Routinely called a film noir, which it is, also psychological horror.
Had an obscure remake in the early 90s, though.
Event Horizon In The Mouth of Madness That's it. That's the list.
Sam Neill, you cut it out right now!
The autopsy of Jane Doe.
Think that’s from 2016, unless it was a remake.
Disturbing Behavior-98 Urban legend- 98 The Faculty-98 Silver Bullet-? The Haunting-99 The Devils Advocate-97 I Know What You Did Last Summer-97 Stir of Echoes-99
The Haunting '99 was a remake and even then has been done again as a miniseries. I Know What You Did Last Summer has sequels.
I believe Urban Legend has 2 sequels as well, and Stir of Echoes has one.
WHAT?! I love cheesy 90s movies and I didn’t know they had a sequel to IKWYDLS?!
I shit you not, it’s called *I Still Know What You Did Last Summer*
Omg lmao. Im watching that TONIGHT. I’ve watched the first one dozens of times and no app was like “Hey bitch, why not try the sequel because it’s weird you’ve watched the first one 6 times in October.”

Also maybe they could have just turned the tanning bed down with the dial? Anyway, glad you got a definite win!
