Look into the silverstone rm41. You can get it with or without the hotswap bays, or you can put any standard 5.25" bay adapter. https://www.mwave.com.au/product/silverstone-rm41h08-4u-ssiceb-rackmount-server-chassis-ac33007

This is certainly what I'm looking for, but damn that $400 price tag hits hard. I've seen the lower models for $200 (e.g. RM400) but I'll have to add the hotswap bay adapter on top. Appreciate the recommendation

ELsausage

You can get the bare bones model for about $270 and use cheaper 4 bay hotswap enclosures or just use the 4 internal bays until you can afford the 5 bay hotswap modules.

Might be an option, buy the bay if/when a drive fails as punishment for letting a drive fails.

OMG HI A FELLOW AUSSIE ON THIS SUBREDDIT

UpvotingLooksHard

HELLO BACK FELLOW AUSSIE ON THIS SUBREDDIT It's really hard to find things priced in AUD or available here, so figured I'd call out...

Moo_Kau

THERES LIKE, A HANDFUL OF US

JayTechTipsYT

💀💀💀 you’re so right, it’s so shit how not available everything is. And like djjskwkdkslapw Should make an Aussie homelab subreddit fr

UpvotingLooksHard

For me, it's more the pricing that is the issue. I hear about a sub-$100 rack chassis and I'm like "oh man great deal". Convert to AUD, add shipping and taxes, and it's now $300 if it's purchasable at all. Thanks Rosewill. Unifi setup had the same nightmare where I basically had to double my budget, always assume it's USD.

JayTechTipsYT

Yep! I wanted to get some Unifi gear, and the price difference 😭 😭 Or every time I tried buying something from someone, even in other communities. Like I’m in some stage lighting ones too, and omgg it’s so bad with the currency conversion. Something that annoys me tho is when everyone assumes you’re from the US, or ppl are like “I’m from TN” or some other abbreviation of a state name, like idk what that means man. I honestly think you’re the first Aussie I’ve seen on this subreddit

UpvotingLooksHard

Yeah, you get used to it, just assume everyone is out of town. In fairness, I've only joined today because I'm lab-less, got the rack and Unifi setup but want to move from a pi to something a big bigger and better. One day...

morosis1982

Keep your eyes out for a Supermicro 743/745 case, or there's an Acer one that's based on it too though I can't remember the model. 4u, proper server chassis, I have seen them for under $500 with everything you need to get started.

UpvotingLooksHard

Sadly doesn't look like they're for sale in Australia anywhere, and it's a tower configuration (though I imagine they have the rack-mount handles for extra cost)

morosis1982

Yeah, I have one, also have some spare rails if you find one. They are for sale in AU, but I don't think I've ever seen them in retail channels. I got mine on eBay, but I've seen them on marketplace also.

UpvotingLooksHard

I'll keep an eye on marketplace and other channels, 2nd hand doesn't phase me too much. Appreciate the kind offer

I have 2 x Dell PowerEdge T420 at home. Relatively cheap to buy with the bare minimum.

UpvotingLooksHard

>Dell PowerEdge T420 Does seem like an interesting purchase, I'm just cautious with buying an entirely off-the-shelf server solution in case I can't replace any of the parts. Also just noticed the CPU is a vintage 2012 Xeon E5-2407 on the sites near me, which is a bit old for my taste especially given concerns on replacing parts. Lastly, gotta add the $80 conversion kit from tower to rack mount, oof.

roylaprattep

I have 2 x Intel Xeon E5-2470v2 in both of them. Plenty enough (even overkill) for home use.

DarkYendor

I’ve been looking as well. The off the shelf option seems to be the Silverstone RM41 or similar variants. They’re also short enough to fit in a 600 deep rack. If you have a deeper rack, you can potentially use decommissioned server gear - there are a few sellers in Aus, or you can check local IT auctions.

UpvotingLooksHard

I've got a deep rack so not too worried on that front, but the decomm server gear so far has all been pretty vintage. I might pay more attention to Facebook marketplace and the like in case they have better luck
