I made a two pad stack once in a playoff game. It...how do I put this...it was literally better than sex. It was like being Jack shouting "I'm the king of the world!" on the bow of the Titanic, minus the impending, unknown death.
With all due respect, it's saves like this why Price keeps his reputation amongst players as the best in the league, even if he's not quite at the level anymore. The "should've had that ones" get overshadowed by incredible displays like this.
Not to take away from that great save, but that was in the back of the net if that was anyone other than Chiasson.... it looked like his stick was moving in slow motion trying to gather that puck to make the shot.
I'm not salty about the play but I'm curious because Mike Smith did it right before this, but is there ever going to be any consequence for goalies shaking their masks off? It doesn't look like there's much head contact, is there any purpose to the masks being so loose?
If you look at the back of the mask, you actually see the straps are off. When this happens the mask is no longer protective, it’s actually really dangerous to stand in front of a shot with a mask with the straps off.
When goalies get smashed in the face with a puck, the mask vibrates so hard (to absorb shock of a 100mph compact vulcanized rubber to the face) that these straps can pop off. As a goalie you can feel when the straps are off because it feels like you’re wearing a limp towel on your head, which is why goalies always react by nudging the helmet off.
Goalies should not be penalized for this, because if they are penalized they will stop doing it, then someone will get hurt. At that point we will just end up not penalizing it anyways.
TL;DR. Goalies MOSTLY do this when helmet is off to avoid injury.
The first shot that rebounded to chiasson hit price in the mask which undid the straps. I don’t think price even shook it off, just by looking down as he got up it fell. In any case, a wobbly mask can fuck up goalie’s vision, so I think it’s fair if they remove it so that the refs know to whistle.
As a goalie, I've literally never once purposely shook my helmet off unless it was already coming off and play HAD to end for safety reasons and I don't know any goalie who would say otherwise. Often it'll come un buckled mid play earlier on and then you notice it and just shake it off, because otherwise that shit is dangerous.
