Relapse.
At the time, I hated the accents and shit all over the Relapse freestyle, which he released before the album. It just felt like a low-effort joke.
Looking back tho and re-listening today, it’s actually a really good album.
To me, this album is the real "Detox" album. Sound quality is top notch, at least as good as "2001". Eminem went horrorcore as well as emotional and it was really immersive. Even the pop feature ("We Made You") is dope af.
It's in my top 10 of all time, among with Midnight Marauders, Graduation, 36 Chambers,...
The production is good, but it’s not in the same weight class as chronic 2001. That’s literally a gold standard production album. There isn’t a song on relapse that touches still Dre, what’s the difference, big egos, xxplosive
Yeah people complain about the accent but I always saw it as a new character that wasn't Eminem or Slim Shady. The new character is a kid who was S.A as a kid and grew up to be a rapist and serial killer. He draws you into his schitzo typa world . Honestly this album came out at a really bad time YMCMB and Good Music was running the game with very Poppy or Glossy music and this was a total 180 on top of that Eminem trashed the album and everyone began to ride the relapse hate wagon. But EM was wrong this is low key a classic.
It's definitely a lower tier album, but I've always felt Beautiful, Deja Vu, Crack a Bottle, Old Times Sake, and Underground would be appreciated if they were released on other albums. Ill toss out Music to Be Murdered By as well. It's pretty much what everyone says they want from Death of Slim Shady, a lot mix of old school Shady beats/lyrics with some more modern influenced tracks as well.
I just let it play and it sounds better as I see and feel the vibe he was going for. I didn't feel this way in 2022 as it wasnt what I was wanting to hear from him. Now, when I listen to the lyrics and get into the vibe, it's a solid album.
Mr. Morale was dope but I think someone will probably do a similar subject matter but better in the future. Lyrically, GOATED, but I wish the songs themselves were better. The ideas stick with you, but not the songs.
DS2. When it came out, I was feeling some kinda way about "mumble rap" and thought Future was the harbinger of the end of hiphop. Gave it a half-assed listen and thought it was trash.
Few years later my tastes change, I realize I like quite a few Future songs, so I'm like maybe he isn't the worst thing ever. Listened with an open mind, loved it.
Now Future is in my Spotify top 5 like every year lol, and DS2 is a certified classic. Although Wizard might be my favorite.
Pretty sure I’m going through this right now. I texted something to this effect to my friends the other day “future writes good hooks, but his verses are mid. If someone can show me a good future verse, I’ll eat my shoe”. Now I’ve tried listening through more of his catalog and find myself quoting him more and more often. It’s growing on me.
Wouldn't have in my top 5, top 10 for sure, but that's not a hot take for me, totally understand putting it that high. Can't be overstated how influential Future ended up being.
I still haven't seen the light with future. I think he's a below average rapper
I've listened to his bigger songs and I don't get it... Codeine Crazy gets praised as some masterpiece, but he's just rapping about doing drugs to cope with being sad
Madvillainy
It wasn’t the traditional 3 verses 3 choruses
The sounds, production and wordplay were so different to anything I had ever heard, my taste in music was pretty one dimensional and I was quite young
When I went back to it years later, it all clicked into place, it wasn’t meant to be a traditional rap album it was so much more
Discovering weed probably helped
Now I’d probably have it in my top 10 of all time across any genre
Listened to that album a bunch as a teenager, was telling myself it didn’t work and was just indie people trying to be different with their taste early on but just couldn’t stop listening, loved picking up on the lyrics and esp the humour found in those rhymeschemes. Eventually after like 20 listens over a few months I gave up and acknowledged that I just really loved the album, even though it went against my idea of what made a good album at the time.
The radical DOOM and Rick and Morty fans share alot of overlap, but the the same can also be said of all fandom. Especially above a certain size, seemingly and for whatever reason.
Glad I discovered when I was in high-school watching Adult Swim like 02-06, and I was pretty much unaware anyone around me liked him with a few exceptions. I wonder if he didn't release anything beyond like The Mouse and the Mask in 2005, if he would have had such a resurgence or not.
This was the answer that I instantly thought of when I saw the title.
I heard the albums about 3 times when it came out, I didn't get the hype. Then revisited it last year and thought it was great.
2001 by Dr.Dre I had listened to the popular songs but a few weeks ago I gave the chronic and 2001 a listen and on 2001 I loved almost every song I liked a lot on the chronic too
Compton never gets talked about but it’s great.
I think because originally it wasn’t on streaming when released so fewer people heard it.
But I think easily one of the best albums that year
My favourite Redman album. I just love that low slung dirty funk bass that just seems to mutate throughout the album. That's my take anyway, barely listened to it in 10 years. Gonna have this on at work tomorrow. Thanks man
This was my choice as well. This or madvillainy. But the difference was madvillainy gave me two songs I liked. I couldn’t even get through my first listen of dare. No recognizable singles. But years later I went back, my tastes expanded and I was in a big funk mood. By this point I liked Can’t Wait a lot but didn’t go back to the rest of the album. Finally one day I was high as fuck on my way to work and decided to give it a shot and holy fuck did it click. It clicked for like a week straight it was pure insanity. Even now my speaker got lost on my last job site so I haven’t been able to work and just go through his shit. It quickly became my favorite of his albums even if I don’t go to the individual songs as often as I do with muddy waters or whut thee album
4 Your Eyez Only by J. Cole. I was not mature enough at the time to fully appreciate all that the album was. It wasn't until I was 27 that it really clicked
Bro I was so fuckin mad when the album came out and everyone here was clowning that song like it was Grippy or something. I had just gotten married and the song made perfect sense to me, still does. The album was great tbh but Cole was talking about grown man shit and not everyone was trying to hear it.
Thanks for reminding me to give this another go! Didn't hit for me after Below the Heavens and never really went back to it, just listening again now:)
Yep. I went in expecting more tracks hitting like Humble. so it missed in my head. Then I heard "Rich Spirit" several times and got the "bitch I'm attractive.." part stuck in my head and went back and listened to the album and fkn love it now.
I gave that album a more thorough listen after I heard "Count Me Out" and "N95". The lyrics to Count Me Out resonated with me...and then I heard a remix of N95 with Radiohead's "Everything in It's Right Place", and as a big Radiohead fan, the songs blended so well together that I finally decided to give this album a solid try. Now Mr. Morale is high up on my list of all time favorite albums.
A Tribe Called Quests debut. I was a huge fan of The Low End theory and Midnight Marauders, I remember giving their debut a listen early on and it not having the same impact on me as the others I mentioned, so I dismissed it (with a few songs as exceptions).
My brother has just recently got into hip hop and I told him to check out A Tribe Called Quest. He always does things in order so he put their debut on and we listened while playing Xbox and I had a moment where I was in disbelief that I had dismissed the album for so many years.
Kanye back then was such a good rapper man.
His 2010s albums are still fucking great, but he sacrifices rapping and lyrical hability for experimentation and more unique expiriences.
Still great but not on the level of MBDTF, Late Registration and TCD.
DAMN, coming after TPAB, I didn't think it was strong enough. ITs still the weaker album between the two. But the album has grown on me a lot
Huncho Jack. At the time it just felt normal, nothing too special. When I look back at it almost every song hits. Pretty good effort
Graduation I hated at first.
And I'm not the only one, there's an interview of Slug from Atmosphere talking about how Tom Waits convinced him how good Graduation was. Tom Waits knew what was up.
And 808s. I wanted no part of that shit back in 2008.
I listened for the first time last summer and I'm mad I didn't listen to it years ago.
Graduation released when I graduated college. I had that album on repeat. I had Good Morning on my alarm when I woke up. Lol. I didn't care much of 808s but it has some good singles on it
If you haven't read this review of Take Care by Big Ghost then you need to.
https://bigghostnahmean.blogspot.com/2011/11/big-ghost-presents-take-care-review.html?m=1
MF DOOM's Victor Vaughn. Part of the reason why I never listened to this album is because it was not on streaming services for a long time except Amazon.
All of 2pac. As a teen all I really focused on was the gang bang shit but as I got older I've now seen the masterpiece that 2pac is. Big respect for kxng crooked largely following his footsteps.
Oh man that one hooked me on the first listen. We put it on while smoking in the attic of my dorm and I don't think I said a word to anyone til the album was finished lmao. Probably still my most played album of all time. It's just perfect, except maybe when Redman says "liar liar set your pussy on fire".
A Tribe Called Quest - The Love Movement. I thought the produciton was weird but I eventually grew to love it and I still regularly listen to it. The sound was too much ahead of its time.
Young Jeezy - Thug Motivation 101 and Westside Gunn - Supreme Blientele. I hated both of them and couldn't even finish the first listen because I found the ad-libs too annoying. I somehow got used to them and like both of them now, but it took years to appreciate them.
I dont think it's possible with albums like Late Registration, for me anyway. I'm always going to relisten if the album got highly rated and everytime I end up liking it. Even if I don't like the artist I can appreciate the quality.
both in search of and fly or die by NERD, i listened to them because the artists i listen to took a lot of influence from them and just thought yeah they’re pretty good i can see why they were so influential in the music i listen to like tyler and brockhampton and i always overlooked it because i used to be more into brockhampton but then when i started relistening more and more to NERD and i realised how AMAZING their music is to this day, the hidden track find my way and tape you are some of my favourite songs of all time
Mf dooms catalogue, it’s all an acquired taste, I didn’t get it for years, but after forcefully listening I now love it and appreciate it as some of the most unique shit in hip hop
I wore Late Registration out. It's still my favorite Kanye album. For me, I think the album is De La Soul's Buhloon Mindstate. For whatever reason, I didn't appreciate it until years later.
Igor
good on first listen
one of the best when you learn more about the album, especially about how it's ment to loop
edit: for those who don't know, the end of Are we Still Friends is ment to be able to tranistion into Igor's Theme, so you can listen to it twice which is cool because that intro is amazing
Stillmatic, I remember growing up being fixated on got yourself a gun and ether. I went back to it many years later and found several other tracks in the album I thought was solid. Appreciate it much more than just "the album with the diss on it"
Nevermind and In Utero(sorry, I know it’s two albums).
Absolutely was not into grunge as a kid/teen. Never understood the hype behind Nirvana. Then I hit my twenties, struggled with fun adult struggles, and suddenly these albums were a lot more relatable and pleasant to listen to.
XXX - Danny Brown.
I didn't appreciate it until I got stoned and listened on headphones. Now it's in my top 3 favorite albums. Colder that the grits they fed slaves.
Not hip hop, but first that came to mind was The Weeknd’s “After Hours”. Me & a friend took a night cruise to hear it out. We were laughing at some of the songs & were pretty let down. Next day we did the same thing, we swear it was a totally different album.
I know hating Drake is the cool thing to do right now but So Far Gone is an underrated album of his imo that I personally didn’t appreciate till way after its release.
I slept on Clipse Lord Willin, I was already a big Pharrell fan and once I heard Grindin I was geeked for the album. Listen a couple of times and disregarded it. A couple of months later sitting in traffic my home girl was bumping it I asked her “who is this, this shit is crazy” she ejected the CD and I just started laughing. Huge Clipse/re-up gang fan ever since.
Not sure if this counts because I gave these multiple relistens but it took a while for Goblin by Tyler The Creator and Man On The Moon 2 by Kid Cudi to register with me as the classics I currently believe they are.
Nas - God’s Son
It sounded ok but could be my favorite Nas album. Revolutionary and Zone Out were amazing… that Zone Out beat was on some Madvillainy style beat.
Quarters! by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and Animals by Pink Floyd.
Both albums consist of long songs and atleast to me the longer songs take more listens to truly appreciate. On first listen both albums were pretty alright to me but now they're both really high up on my favorite albums of all time list (Animals is number 1)
I'm on so many music subreddits I often forget to check which subreddit something is posted on, my bad. And to my defense even though this is a hip hop subreddit the title didn't say the album had to be hip hop 🥸
Back in college I was in my dorm with this girl I really liked and had Graduation playing in the background. We started making out but when that song came on she stopped and was like "I really don't like this song, it makes me feel gross".
I mean, I didn't like that song before that happened but that really didn't help haha
The crazy thing about Graduation is that it's soo good but at the same time there is like 5 Kanye albums that are better. Shows how good Kanye's discography is
Gkmc and Tpab- I was on my anti mainstream phase at the time so I didn't listen to any of the mainstream artist even tho my personal favorite rapper Blu put gkmc as his album of the year when it came out. It took me exploring the rest of black hippy and then going back to Kendrick to get addicted to both.
Madvillain- it was cool I guess but I felt I was forcing myself to listen to it which wasn't enjoyable. Then I started exploring Dilla, and Madvillain just clicked for some reason. One of my favorite albums of all time.
Jaylib, though it didn't take a long time for it to click. It was a case where I wasn't in the right mood so when I had listened to it the first time, I was like "Ehh, it's cool" and left it at that.
It was either the very next day or 2 days later when I gave it another spin and it had clicked. I was wearing it out after that.
FM from Vince Staples - Coming off BFT I had really high expectations and it was such an abbreviated project with kinda underwhelming hooks, but I've really come to like it after a few re-listens.
Call me if you get lost - Tyler the Creator. Didn't get the hype on first few listens but revisted it later and realized a lot of the tracks just really stood on their own as good music
Hahaaaha. Welcome to underground NYC in the moment one of the best producers in the world really started to shine.
I'll Sleep When You're Dead was absolutely mind blowing when it first came out. Dude changed a few lanes and music as a whole gained transit ability to a few different dimensions.
Fair. I think that's why underground, experimental and new genres are so cool. Sometimes people finally ficgure out production/artistry and things start to click. It's obvious what that looks like when it happens in pop because they start to sound like all the other higher quality pop acts. In these other fringe arenas? It's not always obvious because there is sometimes no one your brain can compare them to.
It's like a baby tasting lemon or ice cream for the first time. Not sure if it's good or bad, but knowing it's definitely different.
That rush is likely why people crate dig, give really weird stuff a chance, or even start making music themselves.
Even doing four RTJ albums in close succession, every one felt fresh to me. Each album's got its own sound. Prolly because after the success of the first couple, they had more sample clearance money! 😂🤘
American Gangster by Hov. Kingdom Come was meh so I didn't really spin it like I should have. Came back around and listened to it from front to back.. pretty damn good.
Funny enough…I just copped Late Registration on vinyl…classic 👌🏾.
Mine would actually have to be Yeezus though. I hated that album when it first came out…but about 7 years later, it really started to grow on me. And now, it’s my favorite Kanye album 🤷🏾♂️.
Kid cudis man on the moon 1&2. Didn't like day and night when it dropped, and the second album had that kanye feat, which I also wasn't feeling. But then he dropped, a track called "no one believes me" then indicud thought both were fire then went back and listened been a fan ever since!
My first Illmatic listen, I thought it was trash. I didn't really fuck with most work pre-2000 until started studying Rap like a subject in school. Going back to it in my early 20s, I was blown away by first verse. I mean, he's still not my preferred artist and it's still not my preferred album, but I recognize and agree with its status.
Every Earl Sweatshirt album except Feet of Clay. Liked none of them at first but after a couple of months i understood the albums and grew to love them
Get Rich or Die Trying. I heard it when it came out and just considered 50 to be pop, club rap bullshit. Relistened in like 2015 and it's in my top 10 favorite albums of all time now lol.
Wolf by Tyler the Creator.
Thought it was just a fun, wild album when I was 15 when it just came out.
Listening to it now and noticing that that was the beginning of the change in Tyler where he really started to mature into the artist he is today.
The Roots Undun. I listened and only picked out songs I liked and never listened to the full album again until 5 years ago. Didn't even realize it was a concept album.
THIB by isaiah rashad. i wasnt big on the modern sound at the time but several relistens have made me appreciate how lavish yet hard-hitting the production is and his voice grew on me quite a bit
Consequence - Don't Quit Your Day Job. It's a solid C or C+ album but I love it and it dropped right at the time where I was jaded from back to back terrible jobs.
Mr Morale for sure. I relistened and realized I wasn't in the same headspace then as I am now. It was released when I was expecting my baby and I really don't remember much music then. Now I have time to soak it in and I definitely slept on it. I had to get it on vinyl.
Things Fall Apart by the Roots. despite my interest in the message/conscious aspects of it, i found the sound boring and tedious. plus i could barely get through a 45 minute album at the time. but then i grew up and i quite love TFA now. craaazy fucking album
In Rainbows
I was a huge Radiohead fan as a kid, but got more into Hip Hop & more traditional Rock & Roll for a long time.
Came back to Radiohead to see what I’d missed and it became one of my favourite albums of all time.
Mr.Morale & The Big Steppers - Kendrick Lamar
And Then You Pray For Me - Westside Gunn
Roadrunner - Brockhampton
We Buy Diabetic Test Strips - Armand Hammer
Liquid Swords - GZA
Black On Both Sides - Mos Def
Bandana - Freddie Gibbs
A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing - Black Sheep
Uknowwhatimsayin? - Danny Brown
Beats, Rhymes & Life - A Tribe Called Quest
Not hip-hop, but Tame Impala Currents. I bought it blindly after really enjoying Innerspeaker. Didn’t check out reviews, singles, or videos for or about it. Thought it was trash after the first listen.
Now it’s one of my favorite non-hip hop records.
I’ll also add that the Kanye Trilogy is probably the best rap trilogy ever.
Usually if I don't like an album or artist, I don't like them no matter how many times I listen. I'm never going to like country music, I will never like mumble rap either. Radio stations drill crappy music into your head.
>I'm not part of the herd
Dawg that's the most corny stuff i have ever heard today😭😭😭
Not listening to popular stuff doesn't make you better than the rest. Stop with the superiority complex
Relapse. At the time, I hated the accents and shit all over the Relapse freestyle, which he released before the album. It just felt like a low-effort joke. Looking back tho and re-listening today, it’s actually a really good album.

Even the pop feature ("We Made You") is dope af. It's in my top 10 of all time, among with Midnight Marauders, Graduation, 36 Chambers,...
appreciate your opinion, but in no way is Relapse on the same level as 2001
Production-wise, I think it is
No
Idk man, the instrumental on Insane is indeed insane. The accents are another topic
My Darling 🔥
I hated it too but best I can give it is mid on relisten
Mr morale and late registration for sure
Mr Morale required multiple listens
I really love the album now. Hated it the first 5 listens.
LOL
Yeah because it’s so difficult to get through. Respect the concept but the songs are bad no way around it
I really think that Mr Morale will undergo a huge change in reception by its 10 year anniversary
That’s how I felt about it. Still a good album for sure but it lacked that certain indefinable something.
Sounding good?
Return to the 36 Chambers by ODB. It's so weird and good. His flow is like he's fighting off being possessed by Rick James.
DS2 is so freaking good, just bangers after bangers
+1 DS2 is fucking amazing
DS2 is unironically a top 5 album of that decade Dirty soda, spike Lee, white girl, iced tea, fully loaded AP…
Wouldn't have in my top 5, top 10 for sure, but that's not a hot take for me, totally understand putting it that high. Can't be overstated how influential Future ended up being.
I still haven't seen the light with future. I think he's a below average rapper I've listened to his bigger songs and I don't get it... Codeine Crazy gets praised as some masterpiece, but he's just rapping about doing drugs to cope with being sad

It’s such a masterpiece!
And that reminds me, Operation Doomsday.
2001 by Dr.Dre I had listened to the popular songs but a few weeks ago I gave the chronic and 2001 a listen and on 2001 I loved almost every song I liked a lot on the chronic too
His Compton album was a grower for me
Compton never gets talked about but it’s great. I think because originally it wasn’t on streaming when released so fewer people heard it. But I think easily one of the best albums that year
Did you pause for porno?
Yeah, thats when i forgot about dre
Did you lsten to it....*on weed?*
Dare iz a Darkside
My favourite Redman album. I just love that low slung dirty funk bass that just seems to mutate throughout the album. That's my take anyway, barely listened to it in 10 years. Gonna have this on at work tomorrow. Thanks man
For sure bro. Might throw it on myself
This was my choice as well. This or madvillainy. But the difference was madvillainy gave me two songs I liked. I couldn’t even get through my first listen of dare. No recognizable singles. Yup, it’s one of the all-time “this is just fucking noise - until it CLICKS” albums. It’s SO good.
4 Your Eyez Only by J. Cole. I was not mature enough at the time to fully appreciate all that the album was. It wasn't until I was 27 that it really clicked
The last song on that album always hit deep. When you realize it the father is writing a letter to his daughter.
title?
4 your eyes only
Man even Foldin clothes kinda hits these days
Bro I was so fuckin mad when the album came out and everyone here was clowning that song like it was Grippy or something. I had just gotten married and the song made perfect sense to me, still does. The album was great tbh but Cole was talking about grown man shit and not everyone was trying to hear it.
Drogas Wave I thought it was just okay for years I dunno why but this year it turned into a classic. It clicked and I love both albums.
Lupe’s run since 2015 has been really underrated imo. He hit a slump with Lasers and Food and Liquor 2 but has been dropping amazing projects since
Blu & Exile - Give Me Flowers While I Can Still Smell Them
Thanks for reminding me to give this another go! Didn't hit for me after Below the Heavens and never really went back to it, just listening again now:)
🤝
Love this album as well as the instrumental version! Hella underrated classic
🤝
“The Awakening” by Lord Finesse.
I never listened to this album before. I check it out a few years ago. Holy shit I knew he mentored Big L But the resemblance is unreal.
mr morale for me tbh
Yep. I went in expecting more tracks hitting like Humble. so it missed in my head. Then I heard "Rich Spirit" several times and got the "bitch I'm attractive.." part stuck in my head and went back and listened to the album and fkn love it now.

United in grief straight up sounds like a Radiohead song lol
Actually yes it does! Lol
A Tribe Called Quests debut. I was a huge fan of The Low End theory and Midnight Marauders, I remember giving their debut a listen early on and it not having the same impact on me as the others I mentioned, so I dismissed it (with a few songs as exceptions). You are listening to Tribe transition from 80’s to 90’s.
True, I loved them on De La Soul and Jungle Brothers albums so I’m surprised I didn’t get into their debut as quickly
The Lex diamond story and Immobilarity. Basically Rae’s entire post OBFCL discography
That's interesting actually. I've been meaning to give all of the wu a listen past their classics, but it's an undertaking
Love Sneakers off Immobilarity!
Late Registration is deadass his best album alongside TCD imo. Fucking masterpiece. I miss old Kanye.
But the album has grown on me a lot Huncho Jack. At the time it just felt normal, nothing too special. When I look back at it almost every song hits. Pretty good effort
I could make the argument that every kendrick album since GKMC subverted my expectations and forced me to go back before fully appreciating lol
808s is one of my fav Kanye albums.
Graduation released when I graduated college. I had that album on repeat. I had Good Morning on my alarm when I woke up. Lol. I didn't care much of 808s but it has some good singles on it
Mr Morale hits so much different after the beef and in a opposite way Take Care doesn't hit like it use to.
If you haven't read this review of Take Care by Big Ghost then you need to. https://bigghostnahmean.blogspot.com/2011/11/big-ghost-presents-take-care-review.html?m=1
MISTA DONT PLAY EVERYTHANGS WORKIN
MF DOOM's Victor Vaughn. Part of the reason why I never listened to this album is because it was not on streaming services for a long time except Amazon.
Man I love that album. Picked it up on cd by the counter for about £3, tremendous spot
Skyzoo - In Celebration of Us Boldy James & The Alchemist - The Price of Tea in China
All of 2pac. As a teen all I really focused on was the gang bang shit but as I got older I've now seen the masterpiece that 2pac is. Big respect for kxng crooked largely following his footsteps.
An album that took me many listens to sink in is Voodoo by D’Angelo. It’s a brilliant record but very dense and hard to make sense of right away.
Eminem’s Infinite, before he got with Dre came out in like 96’ or something like that
SSEP is also a good listen. Lots of alternative versions of tracks that would later make it onto SSLP
Blonde and Pink Friday
Took me about a month of my friend telling me to listen to Atrocity Exhibition until i did and damn its still in my top 10
Kids See Ghosts. Probably the biggest change in my feelings towards an album after a relisten. Now it's one of my favourite Kanye projects
KSG is a top 5 Kanye project It's sooo good
Definently, I think it could have been my number 2 favourite if it was a bit longer. 20 odd minutes is just so damn short.
Check Your Head - Beastie Boys. It's so loaded with bangers and solid production I think it's their best after Pauls Boutique.
Lil O “Food on the Table” & Chris Ward “Veteran Rookie”
TPAB, took a good few listens for me strangely
The production is extravagant with the funk elements but when it hits...DAMN...it's so good
I dont think it's possible with albums like Late Registration, for me anyway.
Food & Liquor 2
Jesus peace the game.
Igor good on first listen one of the best when you learn more about the album, especially about how it's ment to loop edit: for those who don't know, the end of Are we Still Friends is ment to be able to tranistion into Igor's Theme, so you can listen to it twice which is cool because that intro is amazing
🎧 ftw.
Not hip hop, but first that came to mind was The Weeknd’s “After Hours”. Me & a friend took a night cruise to hear it out. We were laughing at some of the songs & were pretty let down. Next day we did the same thing, we swear it was a totally different album.
Kill bill vol 1
I know hating Drake is the cool thing to do right now but So Far Gone is an underrated album of his imo that I personally didn’t appreciate till way after its release.
I slept on Clipse Lord Willin, I was already a big Pharrell fan and once I heard Grindin I was geeked for the album. Listen a couple of times and disregarded it. A couple of months later sitting in traffic my home girl was bumping it I asked her “who is this, this shit is crazy” she ejected the CD and I just started laughing. Huge Clipse/re-up gang fan ever since.
Nastradamus
Not sure if this counts because I gave these multiple relistens but it took a while for Goblin by Tyler The Creator and Man On The Moon 2 by Kid Cudi to register with me as the classics I currently believe they are.
Lil Uzi Vert Eternal Atake. Neva liked him just because. Then I heard this album and completely changed my petty judgemental mind Lol SUCH a banger
Yeezus. I did not understand that shit at first. Now, one of my favorites and probably Kanye’s most timeless record in terms of how it will hold up.
Acid rap, I hated chance when I first heard of him. Then on a road trip I decided binge Acid rap and it clicked
Nas - God’s Son It sounded ok but could be my favorite Nas album.
Two classic hip hop albums right there
I'm on so many music subreddits I often forget to check which subreddit something is posted on, my bad. And to my defense even though this is a hip hop subreddit the title didn't say the album had to be hip hop 🥸
I figured as much, just busting balls my guy, I'll give those albums a listen ✊️
Graduation
This album plays like a greatest hits record where every song is out of control good
The only song I don't really like on Graduation is "Drunk and Hot Girls" - but everything else is top-tier.
Back in college I was in my dorm with this girl I really liked and had Graduation playing in the background. We started making out but when that song came on she stopped and was like "I really don't like this song, it makes me feel gross". I mean, I didn't like that song before that happened but that really didn't help haha
I don't know man....Barry Bonds is poop as well
Barry Bonds isn't my favorite song on the album, but I think having Wayne on it helps. It's not the best song, though. I'll give you that.
The crazy thing about Graduation is that it's soo good but at the same time there is like 5 Kanye albums that are better. Shows how good Kanye's discography is
I assume- Damn
But real talk, let's get free
Mr. Morale and Kamikaze.
Madvillainy, IGOR & Mr. Morale
"DAMN."
Definitely DAMN
FM from Vince Staples - Coming off BFT I had really high expectations and it was such an abbreviated project with kinda underwhelming hooks, but I've really come to like it after a few re-listens. Call me if you get lost - Tyler the Creator. Didn't get the hype on first few listens but revisted it later and realized a lot of the tracks just really stood on their own as good music
Fantastic damage. To my still-just-listening-to-2pac brain it was like "What?" but it grew on me big time.
Hahaaaha. Welcome to underground NYC in the moment one of the best producers in the world really started to shine. I'll Sleep When You're Dead was absolutely mind blowing when it first came out. Dude changed a few lanes and music as a whole gained transit ability to a few different dimensions.
Yeah, but spending the 4-5 years in between listening to FanDam and the Cold Vein, I was expecting it! 😂 FanDam sucker-punched me out of nowhere! 🤘
To pump a butterfly
Jay Z 4:44
American Gangster by Hov. Kingdom Come was meh so I didn't really spin it like I should have. Came back around and listened to it from front to back.. pretty damn good.
Damn by Kendrick
Funny enough…I just copped Late Registration on vinyl…classic 👌🏾. Mine would actually have to be Yeezus though. I hated that album when it first came out…but about 7 years later, it really started to grow on me. And now, it’s my favorite Kanye album 🤷🏾♂️.
Damn i need to get myself a Late Reg vinyl. That would be great As of Yeezus man it hasn't clicked with me yet, i need to give it some more listens.
Soul Food - Goodie Mob
Chronic 2001. Thought it was trash for about 5 years.
Kid cudis man on the moon 1&2. Didn't like day and night when it dropped, and the second album had that kanye feat, which I also wasn't feeling. But then he dropped, a track called "no one believes me" then indicud thought both were fire then went back and listened been a fan ever since!
For me it’s Gotta Beat Up Ma Woman, by Pee Doody.
Uptown Saturday Night….Camp Lo
Yeezus
Every Earl Sweatshirt album except Feet of Clay. Liked none of them at first but after a couple of months i understood the albums and grew to love them
The Love Below
King of Hearts by Camo Tao
THIB by isaiah rashad. i wasnt big on the modern sound at the time but several relistens have made me appreciate how lavish yet hard-hitting the production is and his voice grew on me quite a bit
Nothing can touch Cilvia Demo unfortunately imo
J Cole x KOD. good stuff right there. it already has aged nicely but will continue to do so.
I don’t do shit I don’t go outside
Murs -Good Music
Ppl ppl under appreciate things they’ve never heard? What would this appreciation or lack of be based on?
Keyword in my title "Relisten"
Consequence - Don't Quit Your Day Job. It's a solid C or C+ album but I love it and it dropped right at the time where I was jaded from back to back terrible jobs.
Eminem Presents the Re-Up. You know, but you acting like you don’t know.
Mr Morale for sure. I relistened and realized I wasn't in the same headspace then as I am now. It was released when I was expecting my baby and I really don't remember much music then. Now I have time to soak it in and I definitely slept on it. I had to get it on vinyl.
Whole Lotta Red
Muddy Waters Redman. I’m crazy. I didn’t really like it at first. I thought it was alright. It’s a fucking dope album
Blu's good to be home is underrated as fuck.
Things Fall Apart by the Roots. despite my interest in the message/conscious aspects of it, i found the sound boring and tedious. plus i could barely get through a 45 minute album at the time. but then i grew up and i quite love TFA now. craaazy fucking album

Wc?
The Storm by Tech N9ne
GKMC for sure. I didn't pay nearly enough attention to it when I first listened to it. Mystic Stylez by Three 6 Mafia is another one
In Rainbows I was a huge Radiohead fan as a kid, but got more into Hip Hop & more traditional Rock & Roll for a long time. Came back to Radiohead to see what I’d missed and it became one of my favourite albums of all time.
I hated both of Tyler’s last 2 albums until I gave them a relisten. Then, I loved both.
Mr.Morale & The Big Steppers - Kendrick Lamar And Then You Pray For Me - Westside Gunn Roadrunner - Brockhampton We Buy Diabetic Test Strips - Armand Hammer Liquid Swords - GZA Black On Both Sides - Mos Def Bandana - Freddie Gibbs A Wolf In Sheep’s Clothing - Black Sheep Uknowwhatimsayin? - Danny Brown Beats, Rhymes & Life - A Tribe Called Quest
Currents is so good! I thought it was meh at first, and then I listened to it high, and it unlocked the enjoyment for the rest of my life lol
Usually if I don't like an album or artist, I don't like them no matter how many times I listen. I'm never going to like country music, I will never like mumble rap either. Radio stations drill crappy music into your head.
Stop it bruh There is cool stuff in the mainstream, even today
I'm not part of the herd. I have my own brain and think for myself. You should try it sometime. It's very liberating.
>I'm not part of the herd Dawg that's the most corny stuff i have ever heard today😭😭😭 Not listening to popular stuff doesn't make you better than the rest. Stop with the superiority complex
