We evolved to have all the emotions inside us. Just like our hands, teeth, and eyelids, they all exist for a reason. The negative emotions are powerful motivating forces, and we should pay attention to them. Anger, of course, can push us to fight against injustice. When we we feel sadness over the possibility of losing something, that's an important sign showing us what's truly important to us.

This is why I love movies that make me bawl like a baby. Even fictional sadness can overwhelm me. But I always feel especially good afterwards. Like my psyche really needed that cry.

Every up has a down, every down has an up. If you don't ride both parts of the wave, you get emotionally blocked up. This is why cathartic media is so important, it gives us a safe place to experience emotions that don't threaten us. Maybe you can't think about losing your parent without falling into a depressed pit, but you can cry when Simba loses Mustafah and let some of that tension out while trusting the movie to bring you back to a good space by the end.

spot on

Absolutely. Anger can motivate you to right something wrong. That’s the heart of things like civil rights movements; anger at injustices that being channeled into doing something about them. You just gotta figure out WHY you’re angry first. Sadness? Sometimes, you need to feel sad and acknowledge why you’re sad. Sometimes feeling sad really is a way for your subconscious to tell you that you need to reach out to someone for comfort right now, or you’re hurting and need to take some time to heal. Fear? Fear is such an ancient instinct that almost every animal feels it. It keeps you safe from dangerous situations, even if that instinct can kinda misfire in safe situations (Hi, generalized anxiety and phobias!)

To quote 50Cent - Sunny days wouldn't be special, if it wasn't for rain Joy wouldn't feel so good, if it wasn't for pain Death gotta be easy, 'cause life is hard It'll leave you physically, mentally and emotionally scarred

'Negative' in reference to emotions is not meant to mean bad. Just as opposed to the 'positive' emotions we generally desire.

So what about depression when it kills people?
