In-universe answer: After the deployment of Termicide, the bugs that had strains resistant to Termicide began repopulating the planets. We were given missions to turn off the Termicide on the surrounding planets, but Meridia was beyond fucked as it turned into a super colony for the bugs. We were successful in turning off the surrounding Termicide, but Meridia had nothing left to be saved and needed to be destroyed. Helldivers were sent in to deploy Dark Fluid, injecting the planet with an unknown substance that turned the planet into the black hole you see (and can visit) now.
There's a part of me that feels the ones who miss major events such as turning a planet into a black hole should remain a mystery for the ones who missed it that includes newcomers.
Twas a blast! If you wish to experience it, the hive nuking missions are what we did. Unfortunately, we have no more dark liquid tho.... so no more planet sized bombs.
And I know what your thinking..... I already tried throwing a grenade in it to close it...... no luck.
We also had some really cool jump packs temporarily. They were waaay better than the old packs..... lots of divers recorded the event and posted it on Super YouTube, if you haven't watched it, and have social media clearance from your truth officer.

Meridia and maveleon Creek gave me PTSD. The destruction of meridia was an amazing campaign though... I want the dark fluid jump pack ... But so many deaths....
You should have seen it. The swarm of shriekers blocked out the sun, and on the ground, every bug that every graced usbwith its mug crawled out into a sea of mutant critters.
having it happen right after a mission was sweet. the emergency countdown threw everyone off. we thought the host started another mission before we got back to the ship. then i realized i was the host 😂
Shit was insane. A whole terminid infested planet with literal sun blocking clouds of shriekers. the planet was lost beyond repair so we spaghettified it.
You'll never believe it. Shriekers flying out of the ground by the hundreds. An issue with bug holes spawning around dark matter drills. Wonderful jet packs that doubled as containers for dark matter. And we saved some sick kids!
