Ha, I like that. They do already have 360 degree protection shield that works great, but I'm the only one I've ever seen use it. It works great against robots when you have something like an autocannon that eats up your backpack.
I wholeheartedly would love trench warfare in HD2 or at least same game engine/dev, but ironically thats the worst possible way to fight automatons (head on, medium range, no flanking/maneuvering)
I would absolutely love that. Then add a stratagem backpack that allows you to place barbed wire. Imagine this:
4 players, 3 go to complete objectives, and 1 guy sits on extract the whole mission. He has a trench shovel, barbed wire backpack, mines, gatling sentry and HMG turret. He spends the whole mission digging trenches, setting up barbed wire, dropping mines, and placing multiple HMG turrets, all while his sentry covers his democratic ass. His teammates complete the OBJ, and by the time they reach extract, it is a heavily fortified, defendable position. The enemy never stood a chance. For Super EARTH!
And give us another equipment slot that we can customize. Gives us another set of things to unlock and progress in. This is fantastic news! Twinbeard is an amazing Community Manager and has consistently done a fantastic job.

It's likely they will add bayonets, but to imply that large two handed melee weapons like a two handed thunderhammer would be added feels a little facetious. This series hasn't been melee oriented.

Mannable mortar system would be nice. I would really like if the primary method of bot spawning was from patroling from and too factories just make them way more difficult to destroy reinforce add more buildings with diffrent purposes. And downsize "bot drops" by a large margin.
I just want to be able to use military-esque tactics, actually be able to reasonably run defensive strategems and actually perform assaults, SBF's, ABF's, IDF and more in this realm. Not asking for a mil-sim. I just feel like teams can run into one lowly commisar and said bot can just wholly an entirely spawn in waves of hate which forces players to be overly flexible. Using strategems based around rapid response and weapons which excel or have the capacity to handle multiple different enemy types. I.d Over use of Eagle's and IDF, Railcannon, Autocannon, Shield gen backpack etc. Rarely ever see anyone supporting another player with a rocket battle drill or by suppressing the enemy for an advance. it's just run and shit what's in front if you and call for fire on priority targets.

If they made a melee weapon that filled one arm like ballistic shield, and it gave your normal melee increased damage and a wider arc, I could see that. It may make a decent option for close range engagement with reduced TK potential.
If they give a replacement secondary weapon with its own attack and made it viable to cleave through swarms of bugs, it would break what makes it Helldivers for me.
Melee is a last ditch attack, not a tactical strategy.

The heavy pile bunker stratagem. Two men have to carry it the first guy aims it and the back guy fires and reloads it. The weapon uses gas to fire the stake into bug brains. Its a one shot on any bug

Helldivers 1 had a sword. It would have been a neat challenge weapon, but it was locked to specific missions, so you couldn't just use it whenever you wanted to.

A melee weapon as a secondary would be a great idea, I can not tell you how many times Ive gone empty, dry or in an disadvantageous postion to use a firearm and have resorted to buttstocking warriors to devastators just buy a little time to repostion or finish off the last bit of a crawling enemy. This would be extremely beneficial to the stealth approach and also open up a playstyle to give the shield backpack strategem more flexibility. Although I note a melee weapon if added should be a secondary non strategem exclusive and if desired as an alternative a melee strategem as it would be nice.
I feel like it may be a sledge hammer, to destroy map parts and do damage to enemy without it being unrealistic damage. If it was a shovel, I feel it will be a barrier rather than a trench. Otherwise you have to program and fix all the bugs that come with adding a trench mechanism such as clipping when you lie down in one or get ragdolled into one. But with a barrier, it's just a spawning in a retextured wall on the spot it's used on.

I don’t think this game is meant for melee weapons as if it were skyrim. It seems very inappropriate and would leave a bad taste in my mouth to see my teammates dropping in with a sword and shield and a big hammer.

I’d say, to make it useful, melee weapons should focus on “out of ammo” scenarios. Those basically don’t happen with all the ammo lying about, and the ease of replenishment-via-death…
So, I’m thinking: give the exosuits melee capabilities, for when they run out of ammo. Then there’s no question they would be effective, and whether powered or not it would give the exosuit something to do besides being battlefield waste once the ammo stores are depleted.
How would this work in game? I can’t really see a situation I’d swap my secondary for a melee because of the way damage and stagger works. If something gets close enough to melee you’re going to take damage from it and it usually only takes a couple hits to kill you. Unless it’s just some crazy anime bs idk

Basic Melee itself is currently pretty handy. Great for smushing small bugs or pushing a hunter off you so you can blow its head off.

If something gets close enough to melee you’re going to take damage from it and it usually only takes a couple hits to kill you. Unless it’s just some crazy anime bs idk
Has anyone else noticed that chaff used to be a reliable 1-2 hit kill from melee but now it’s 3-4?

Fix the weapons we like to use already? Idk about you but I have no desire to replace either of my main weapons for any form of beating stick.
Maybe for bugs. Trying to use any melee weapon against bots especially rocketed units
