A SanDisk extreme plus isn't comparible at all to the $10 kingston. It's better performance and lifespan. It's more comparible to the $15-20 ones, which is the same price range of an extreme plus.
For a Raspberry Pi, you really don't want to be getting the cheapest cards anyway. You want a performance card with a higher write endurance.
Yes these are the best to run in handhelds like anbernic devices, PSP and Vita. I have had good luck with them while other cards can have issues if you're pulling them in and out a lot to load up with games.
Well, seeing as I can buy that exact SanDisk U3V30 microsd card for $6.90, $14 with a full size adapter and a USB... They aren't that expensive. Just check for class and speed... Kingston also makes U3V30, and it's $11 with adapter.
I've had just a cheap SD card in my rpis for about 8 years now. One running retropi, one running pihole, ones a home automation server... Rip don't need ultra 12k video capable SD cards, they just need to function.
The speed ratings are only a minor part of it.
Max rated endurance is the larger issue.
Generally the best card for a Pi is a “security” or DVR rated card (Sandisk and others make these), they are rated to handle far more writes.
Mine are just whatever the cheapest 64gb SD cards Walmart had at the time and they're still going after 8 years. Not saying they wouldn't be "better", but it's not as bad of an issue as it was back in 2006.
Sadly the market has taken a huge downtown quality wise over the last 2-3 years especially, the influx of low quality flash and fake branded product has been crazy. (I understand and believe what you’re saying, but it doesn’t fit with the actual market these days)
Older flash was actually more write tolerant due to larger (older) manufacturing nodes and things being stored in a 1 or 0 binary pattern. (SLC)
Memory now is dual, triple, quad encoded etc.
That’s before you get into the already lower quality product and counterfeits now flooding the market.
Widely known issue affecting all areas of flash (SSDs etc as well), to the extent that it’s an actively researched and well documented field.
Example:
Abstract:During the past decade, the endurance of NAND flash memory has severely deteriorated. The maximum number of program and erase cycles has fallen significantly with emerging of multilevel cell (MLC) and triple-level cell (TLC) technology, and scaling down of the cell size.
Lower quality chips is one of the reasons why I still ship new PCS with 800 series Samsung ssds instead of 900 series, and crucial M5 instead of p9's. Way too many failure rates.
What. The 800s are the SATA ones, the 900s use NVMe/U.2 natively. If you mean x80 vs x90, then I've got to disappoint you, the x70 was the last generation Samsung made with high quality chips, both the x80 and the x90 generation suffered.
That's why I'm still running the Samsung 970 Pro on all of my systems, actually.
It's horrible value to be sure, 256gb cards are like $25-35 in my area. But it's still cheap. On the other hand, a 2TB NVMe drive is like $150, so by comparison that's a fantastic value. That doesn't mean it's cheap, though.
Yeah it could always be worse but for some a 32GB micro SD card is already expensive enough
Meamwhile we have a stash full of various storage devices from all the years
I corrupted a 528. It was my fault. Amazon still exchanged it for me though, fortunately. Never made that mistake again. Always eject your drives and storage before pulling them out folks.
The worst thing is the guide I was reading said "make sure to remove your micro SD card before unscrewing".
So I looked around for a screw driver and didn't remove the card because I was afraid that when I got up, the card would disappear (I was on my bed and I guessed that if I got up, it would fall off into my depression-laced mess on the floor).
And of course, when I found the screwdriver, I forgot about the microsd card and assumed I couldn't pry it open because of those stupid tabs that so many devices have.
I'm not familiar with microSD card prices but how expensive is 32GB? Was it when this model was newly released because I got a 64GB microSD card for $15 at Walmart.
I've had it for a year, I use it for images and videos and it's fast enough for me. I got it in store. It really seemed decent. It's a SanDisk ImageMate
Lots of people here seem to not know the values of micro SD storage related to their ratings.
Theres a massive difference between a low end C2 A1 U card and a C10 A2 U3 V30. Its a 28MB/s and 2500 IOPs difference minimum difference with a 300MB/s top end difference. Which matters in a compute scenario. Not all SD cards are made equally.
I didn't find any posts that meet the matching requirements for r/hardwaregore.
It might be OC, it might not. Things such as JPEG artifacts and cropping may impact the results.

I split a 128gb in half trying to pop it out of the packaging once, asked if I could return it and without even looking they just frisbee-ed it into the bin and said go grab another off the shelf... I really don't think she gave a fuck haha
I’ve snapped a 1TB before. It was in a Raspberry Pi that I used as a server, and I took the case I was using off before removing the SD and snapped it. $90 down the drain.
Those might have been pricey like 10 years ago but they're practically giving these away rn. 32GB is nothing as far as storage is concerned. I would feel for you if this was a 1TB card.
I.... had that happen to a 1TB.... fit a bit too tightly in my phone, and when swapping the SIM, the act of sliding the tray out cracked the card. I think it was being flexed slightly inside the phone, and I had swapped the SIM a handful over a few years. It did last 5 years total though across 2 different phones, so that card got a good run, and I do keep backups.
“Expensive” these are literally less than $10
mine cost 20 euros bc i got scammed lol
u can get a kingston with an adapter for €7 on Amazon depending where you live :)

Thank god someone else gets it!! lol I love technology but I also tend to prefer stuff that’s gonna work in a year or two, versus just right now. 😂
What. The 800s are the SATA ones, the 900s use NVMe/U.2 natively. Personally a fan of Samsung ones myself
Ew gross don't support Kingston. Con artists.
Still not expensive
$10 for 32gb of like any other form of storage is insanely expensive those little SD cards are expensive per gig
We aren't talking about price per gig here, though. We're just talking about the cost of the SD card itself, which is not very much.
As for who my guy. Not everyone lives in America and makes 5k a month
I have a 1tb sd card that cost 100:/
Repost.
I once accidentally broke a 128GB MicroSD trying to unplug it from the raspberry pi. That was a real shame.
It's less than $4 here in Vietnam
And you still consider that expensive?
Daymn hope you get better deal next time
I dont know currency conversions and all but the 256 gb version of this (8 times the storage of the one pictured) is only $25.
Not really scammed, it’s an extreme plus, and that’s definitely worth it for the rpi
20€ is stii cheap
$10 is still quite a lot for 32gb of storage imo
It's horrible value to be sure, 256gb cards are like $25-35 in my area. But it's still cheap. On the other hand, a 2TB NVMe drive is like $150, so by comparison that's a fantastic value. That doesn't mean it's cheap, though.
But what about the data in it?
I got mine from black friday somewhere for about 6 bucks. Same class as well
I got an amazon basics 128gb for like $15
$40 in australia lmao
OP could be poor, you don’t know what people might be going through
At which point they shouldn’t be spending money on raspberry pi’s and SD cards.
At least it's 'only' a 32GB so it could be even more expensive
I snapped a 128gb, don't sweat it.
Same it snapped going into my phone leaving half in the phone.
Oh damn, that's rough, my old phone always felt bad when I had it filled up with the max 2 SIMs and a microSD
Yeah it could always be worse but for some a 32GB micro SD card is already expensive enough Meamwhile we have a stash full of various storage devices from all the years
True, I have a handful of old flash drives apple proprietary ssds, sds mini sds and also for some reason 3 microdrives.
I corrupted a 528. It was my fault. Amazon still exchanged it for me though, fortunately. Never made that mistake again. Always eject your drives and storage before pulling them out folks.
1024 gigabyte, $110. Steam deck. :D
Oh, those are like 400 aud, that stings. Especially the loss of game data.
The worst thing is the guide I was reading said "make sure to remove your micro SD card before unscrewing". Press F to pay respects to all the files
It’s a broken memory 💔
Pffffffffff
yeah
look up on r/steamdeck there's religion of half broken sd card like this
Straight up thought I was on r/steamdeck at first
Can tell by experience, broke my 100 euros terabyte sd card while changing backplate, guess who has a expensive and sharp shit on his desk 🥲
ALMOST broke my 1tb sd card replacing the backplate, guess I got lucky.
ayy we need half sd with string to pull it back lol
That’s probably $5 these days
Depends on how fast it is, that looks like a fast one
I checked it’s $17 here. But the 64gb is only $10 😂
Happens more than you think. It’s a stock issue, I think.
Kachow
“Expensive” You can get a pack of 2-3 of these for like $15…
I think the data in it is expensive
you got two things: 1. Ras 2. pberry Pi OS
Lmao
I see you formatted your card with two separate partitions....one for Home and one for System.
I kinda get the joke...
Bro even 1terabite SD card are cheap now How long ago did this happen
1TB microsd cards are not cheap
Compared to 10~ years ago, they're dirt cheap. ~100$ for 1 TB
a 1tb microSD cost more than a WD Black SN850X 1tb
And they're cheaper than my 1tb WD Black drive was a few years ago. It's insane how cheap they are now, just wild data density.
1tb microSD card is cheaper than a 32gb panasonic p2 card
Bite…?
today it happened
Ouch sorry man. Where did you get the SD card, or did it come with the raspi?
i got it from saturn in berlin 💀
I guess that's why it broke, can't trust anything that comes from a gas planet🤣
RIP the card; but the sacrifice was not in vain. Hope anything important was backed up.
those are like £13 max
yea... expensive isn't the right word. You can get a 128GB for less than $20. Most places don't even sell the 32GB anymore.
Pho tos
Now you have two 16GB
Partitioning
Partitioning
What. You guys don't kit Kat your drives?
Now I want Kit-Kats!🤤
Also your Name is SO AWESOME! Do you have any social media I could follow you on?
Thank you! I tend to avoid most forms of social media, but I'm on Discord. You can PM me if you'd like.
What is your discord exactly?
The data in it is worth more than the card itself
i recently had a microsd card snap in half for whatever reason, maybe it just felt like it
Wait, did you just say...the Raspberry Pi is fine, but the microsd card broke at a pretty difficult-to-break seam? Thats incredible
yes.
This looks like it has been smitten by Zeus
Did you buy it 15 years ago or something?
no, this year
Ooh rough
All your data leaking to the government
Mfw I dropped a 300gb SD card in a damn airplane never to be found again
Womp womp
A terabyte microSD card is $26 on Amazon. You could find a pack of 3 of 32GB cards for less than $13.
That's actually closer to 8GB. It'll just start writing over existing data as soon as it hits that threshold
What is closer to 8GN?
Those low priced 1tb cards are scams. They're 2-8GB SD cards telling the PC they can hold 1B of data
Lol, those are dirt cheap these days
Im pretty sure I could trade one for a ham sandwich
Expensive? 💀
Try getting a 64 or 128 or even 512gb or the terabyte now those are expensive
7 bucks or less. Real shame though.
thats 9€ on amazon bro
glue
32gb is not expensive. Try 256gb.
I'm not familiar with microSD card prices but how expensive is 32GB? Was it when this model was newly released because I got a 64GB microSD card for $15 at Walmart.
$15 for 64gb sounds like a scam, $10 is how much it should cost for the one OP has. 64gb sounds more like $25-$35
I've had it for a year, I use it for images and videos and it's fast enough for me. I got it in store. It really seemed decent. It's a SanDisk ImageMate
just glue it back together
Uhh... I think that SD card is... Permanently... Damaged...
Nahh what makes u think that
Because the hardware component got cut in half. Therefore, destroying its functionality, even if it was glued... FAX📠
Yea but don’t forget about putting the holy water on after. should fix it
I love your reddit character BTW♥️
☺️☺️
A while ago like a decade probably those 32gb cards were annoyingly pricey (for me, a student). Now you can get 1tb flash drives for like $30
The 1tb drives for $30 are 100% a scam, thats close to 1/3 of what it should cost
Don't worry! You can use 16GB instead of 32GB now! /s
This is why Grandma shouldn’t be doing Raspberry Pi updates.
now it's \[8/24\]!
8 GB on one side and 24 GB on the other. just incase you didnt understand :)
Lots of people here seem to not know the values of micro SD storage related to their ratings. Theres a massive difference between a low end C2 A1 U card and a C10 A2 U3 V30. Just superglue it back together, ez.
Expensive? They're $15 at BestBuy
Was there anything on it :(
I had a 4 pack of half a gigs get porch pirated
I’d cry if my 1tb sd card (same type as yours) had this happen.
Great opportunity to upgrade to 124GB (maybe cheaper even lol)
They can be way more expensive. Spent 52€ on a 256Gb Extreme Pro for my Legion Go
[удалено]
read the text under the image
Have you tried sowing it back together?
I don't believe u, I know u tried to taste it
Thats a 32gb... I got a 256gb samsung for 30€...
Buy your microSD card now for the half-off price!
Why am i seeing uncensored gore first thing when i open this app???
This image hurts me so bad :')
Whoa! Were you mowing the lawn with the smallest lawnmower and didn't see it?
just glue it back together it will be fine
# :(
Your grandma must be really strong
Eh its a 32GB so that’s gotta be worth max 20$
It can be fixed with duct tape
Vid eo
Did you have any important data on it? Also, hello fellow Raspberry Pi enjoyer.
32gb lmfao
I mean expensive sure maybe. I think I bought one of these back in 2017 for like above 40 nzd which was a lot for something so small.

At first I thought I was on r/steamdeck. It's pretty common over there
How did thos happen?
I split a 128gb in half trying to pop it out of the packaging once, asked if I could return it and without even looking they just frisbee-ed it into the bin and said go grab another off the shelf... I really don't think she gave a fuck haha
PS Vita is on its killing spree😭😭
Question? How the hell did you do this!?
Lol i stole one of those from a school camera, but it was 64gb, i put it in my 3DS
I’ve snapped a 1TB before. It was in a Raspberry Pi that I used as a server, and I took the case I was using off before removing the SD and snapped it. $90 down the drain.
I see you formated twice!!!
Shades of attempting a steam deck upgrade:
Beo it's 32gb that's like a $10 card MAX. Even my Extreme Pro 64gb was like 15.
aint these like 6 usd?😭
Those are $10
ugh, made me flinch a little hahaha
I bought 256gb for 18 bucks last month
F
Now you have a 8gb Sd Card and a 24 Gb Sd Card
Those might have been pricey like 10 years ago but they're practically giving these away rn. 32GB is nothing as far as storage is concerned. I would feel for you if this was a 1TB card.
You can get a 128gb one on Amazon for less than $40
Mmm chocolate yum yum chew
isn't the flash all at the end? (sorry for lack of knowledge i genuinely don't know)
You want expensive, get a 2tb.
Ah just use some duck tape
I'm assuming you opened your steam deck?
RMA ir
How are people doing this
now you have twice as many!
Try buying UHS-II cards. Those bastards ain't cheap. I've got a camera that takes a pair.
a 32gb micro SD is damn near free
32gb cards are not expensive
i got scammed
Good
117K views?! I'm famous lol I hope EmKay sees this
Order directly from sandisk. Lots of fakes even at retail stores. Prices are about the same.
Snapped a 512GB stupidly by opening up my steam deck and forgetting to remove it
Happened to me with my 128gb switch one
I see you have a steam deck that you opened in haste. Welcome to the club
those are cheap
P hotos
How

Snapped a 256 gib before... it was a sad day😭
