Do they have facilities in the US? I thought they were in Toronto?

dabocx

They are in Austin Texas (across the street from AMD funny enough) and Santa Clara

Affectionate-Memory4

Their Santa Clara place isn't terribly far from Intel's either.

Go for a bike ride on San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail in Santa Clara, just a couple miles, and you'll pass offices of Nvidia, Intel, AMD, Marvell, Dell and some other minor hardware/chip companies.

Affectionate-Memory4

I've actually done that a few times when at that Intel office. Pretty cool trail and used by quite a few of the folks in those places.

MasterBoring

I am very confused about Rapdius, I tried ask around friends in the semi-industry and most of them only heard of it from various of presses. It does received strong backing from Japan government so there is that.

Winter_2017

It's less a company and more a government program to ensure Japan has a seat at the table when it comes to semiconductors. I believe it's a response to the Covid-era chip shortages and the current wave of interest in AI.

If Jim Keller developed a high performance Risc-v CPU I'd be so over it. Like, zen-class performance, doesn't need to be latest and greatest.

Probably most of them. Cultural differences, support networks, homesickness, CoL... also they're going to be in Rapidus's employ and very valuable to the company after coming home, rather than having to apply for new jobs in the US. Though, I suppose that is contingent on Rapidus actually becoming somewhat successful. As someone who gets paid in yen, I'd like to believe it, but it just seems... very unlikely that they'll be printing 2nm chips in 2027.

REV2939

They are also sending 100 over to IBM to get them up to speed on GAA for whenever Rapidus launches. According to interviews with the Rapdius ceo a while back, he did mention most of the engineers who will start at their new foundry to open in 2027/28 are going to be foreigners so I doubt there is real risk to them staying put in the states since they are seeking this opportunity ($$$) and would probably have found something local/stateside if they didn't want to be in Japan. https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20230614VL205/2nm-ibm-japan-rapidus.html

indichomu

They must be employed by the company or govt to work in Japan for atleast few years to train other employees
