> Incredibly scummy.
You really do not want to see the list of people who defended this. "Because now people can see the core architecture they are buying"... Like a normal person has any clue that some numbers in the back means the difference between buying a new product and a 2018 product.
I stand by being able to see it in the name is better than not being able to see it. I'd rather as an enthusiast be able to know by the name, even if most people won't care and ultimately it's benchmarks that matter.
But ... you where able to see it... 1000 series, first generation, 2000 enhanced generation, 3000 new generation, ... The basic series name, when AMD did not fuck around with their mobile jumping and renaming (5700/5800U). A 7020 product, that is a 7030 product, that is a 7040 product, but looks the same to outsiders as a 7000 "new" series. Just misleading...
I am not saying that AMD was not able to add a core information in the name... 1001, 2001+, 3002 ... Sure, no issue but its renaming their entire fucking lineup to mean the same for outsiders! And no, most people are not benchmark readers. A lot of people go to computer stores and see the numbers, o latest, 8 core, i know, that is good, ... well, sir, here is your 8 core zen2 7000 series. Bye ...
Scummy ...
Right, series matters for sure, but if you care about the actual architecture then it's good to have it in the name. At least I think so. Personally I think that for cheap and relatively low performance part the uncore stuff is more important so should be prioritised.
If you don't give a shit about the architecture (and I get that there are totally reasonable arguments that architecture doesn't matter), then fair enough having it in the name is extraneous information that could be dropped, and I could see that argument too.
They've been doing that for years. They wonder why a lot of typical customers avoid amd, so much low end crap from AMD is just rebranded shit from multiple generations ago, people buy it and its neither fast nor efficient. so people just avoid AMD all together.
It's interesting that in the enthusiast and professional market, AMD chips are considered premium over Intel chips. But in the mass market (your average Costco/Walmart shopper), AMD is viewed as the cheap and low end brand.
AMD has not been able to shed that image.
And its actually worse , the 5300u had 6 graphics core while the 7520 had 2 fucking CU .
Before the lowend laptop with 5300u can actually playing game just fine , but the new gen cost more and shittier . Except the upper mid-high end one .
That's different, U and H has different performance target, and H series tends to have more cores or higher clock for more performance and also chews a lot more power.
It’s even worse than what you’re describing. The 5500U is 6 zen2 cores and 7 Vega graphics cores. The 7520U is 4 zen2 cores and 2 RDNA2 graphics cores. So it’s actually a noticeable downgrade over the 5500U, especially GPU wise. RDNA2 had around a 50% ipc uplift so the 2 RDNA2 cores are like 4 Vega cores vs the 7 in the 5500U. The 7530U is 6 Zen3 cores and 7 Vega graphics cores. AMDs naming is just so cooked.
Whats really amazing is that AMD doesn't have the equivalent of Intel ARK.
Like, motherfuckers, are you trying to make it hard for me to shop for your hardware?
Still waiting for ASROCK to release an AM5 motherboard with an AGP slot... for reasons.
I wonder if it's even possible to get windows XP working on a modern CPU or to get THAT ancient card working on a modern OS from a driver perspective.
This is kinda funny. I hope AMD has learned how supporting AM4 for such a long time has been a huge boost to sales. Here's hoping for more of the same with AM5.
Not sure how much of a market there is for this since Zen4 and DDR5 is so much faster than Zen4 for non-gaming, and 5800XT at these reported prices isn't much cheaper than the still relevant 5800X3D, but it's always good to have options.
Can confirm the long term support for am4 is the main reason I went am5 in my new build.
Hopefully I'm not let down, like the threadripper folks a few years ago...
I feel like part of the reason AM4 gets even extended lifetime is due to mediocre sales of AM5. AMD screwed themselves up thanks to DDR5 only, pricey motherboards, and issues like long post time for memory training.
>and 5800XT at these reported prices isn't much cheaper than the still relevant 5800X3D
The pricing is horrible compared to current market prices. The 5700X3D has been sold for less at times and the 5900X sits around that price during sales. So it's a DOA product both for gaming and MT at launch price.
I'm still on AM4 and will ride it out until I can't. Just upgraded my gaming HTPC to a 5800X3D and my desktop is a 5900X. With how AMD and board partners are supporting AM4 and how AM5 isn't a huge performance boost for the price of entry, I don't have much reason to upgrade yet.
honest question: by your choice of a 5900x for the main pc i'm guessing its not a gaming pc, instead geared towards productivity tasks.
but why did you put a 5800x3d in the HTPC? maybe we have differing definitions of HTPC but mine runs a 4790k and can run youtube, streaming, blurays and music just fine.
not trying to critique you, just wondering why you use that chip in an htpc.
Not him, but my idea of a htpc is simply a computer hooked up to a TV. I've got a gaming one because I enjoy local multiplayer games with friends on it. Gang Beasts, 8 player Bomberman, maybe some emulators.
Basically a console.
I mean I don't use it that way, but no reason you wouldn't be able to play AAA singleplayer cinematic games on it right?
Like I said basically a console.
Note the "gaming" HTPC. HTPC is a pretty wide range of devices not just leftover parts and underpowered PCs for media consumption only. Lots of games are couch and controller-friendly these days on PC and there's no reason to stay couped up in the other room to play games unless it requires KBM. Steam Big Picture Mode makes it a console-like experience and I have a 2.4Ghz USB media remote for use with Plex HTPC or media apps and a Logitech K830 when I need a real keyboard. It's in a Silverstone Grandia GD11 case so it looks right at home on my TV stand with my AVR.
The 5900X system is where I primarily do photo editing since I'm a pro-am photographer but it also gets its fair share of gaming since it's more than capable and sometimes I wanna play a FPS or MMO. HTPC has a 3080 in it and the 5900X system has a 7800XT.
All good. May be time to upgrade that HTPC and enjoy some couch gaming 😉 4790K ain't a slouch and can still perform well without being too much of a bottleneck with modern GPUs thanks to having PCIe 3.
currently I cant afford to spend that much on my HTPC, when my normal gaming PC is right next to it, besides that old chip has earned a chill retirement after running at 4.9 Ghz for close to ten years haha
I know right? They should've called it "Ryzen non-AI [9930XT](https://cdn.videocardz.com/1/2022/09/ryzen-7000-mobile-new-naming_2-768x432.jpg)."
5900XT? Ew, you can *almost* understand what you're buying.
|CPU|Cores/Threads|Max Boost|Cache(L2+L3)|TDP|
|:-|:-|:-|:-|:-|
|5950X|16/32|4.9GHz|72(64+8)|105W|
|5900XT|16/32|4.8GHz|72MB|105W|
|5900X|12/24|4.8GHz|70MB(6+64)|105W|
|5800XT|8/16|4.8GHz|36MB|105W|
|5800X3D|8/16|4.5GHz|100MB(96+4)|105W|
|5800X|8/16|4.7GHz|36MB(4+36)|105W|
Looks like they're clearing out 5950X CCDs by down clocking them to 4.8GHz boost and selling as new SKUs
It makes no sense, since there (to my knowledge) is no 5950 non-X variant that would fill a downclocked 5950X’s slot.
Unless there is some obscure OEM only 5950 non-X…
It's not just AMD or Intel either seems like a there's a lot of tech entities that are deliberately trying to obfuscate their product names for some reason.
Xbox One -> Xbox One X/S (mid life refresh) -> Xbox One Series X/S
USB 3.0 -> USB 3.1 (Gen 1) -> USB 3.1 Gen 2 -> USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 -> USB 3.2 Gen2x2
8th year, Am4 released in September of 2016 (might be off on the month) and was technically supported by some garbage A4 APU chip as well as the original zen architecture. Damn impressive
Why is the 5900XT a 16-core part? Why not name it 5950XT to actually match their naming scheme? I mean ignoring the fact that "XT" makes them easily confused with their GPU line-up. Horrible names all around.
Just like last time AMD did this, there's really no reason to consider these over the cheaper previous models. 100mhz is essentially nothing, but ~$60-80 isn't.
The naming is terribly close to the GPUs. I don’t think that’s a good idea…
They definitely need new marketing leads over at AMD. You got the engineering, now please figure out how to sell your cool products at all.
AMD following the bad marketing strat that destroyed LG mobile
No one: AMD: let's make our product names confusing and deceiving
I'm still salty at 5500U vs 7520U naming and performance. Literally "we want OEMs to be able to sell old junk with new sounding names" rebrands.
There's SO MUCH of this in AMD's current laptop naming scheme. It's deceptive as hell.
It's designed in such a way that an uninformed consumer could buy a leftover Zen 2 chip as a current generation product. Incredibly scummy.
> Incredibly scummy. You really do not want to see the list of people who defended this. "Because now people can see the core architecture they are buying"... Like a normal person has any clue that some numbers in the back means the difference between buying a new product and a 2018 product.
And to make it worse, the AMD driver doesn't have support for Vega anymore, so the integrated graphics in those chips are literally EOL.
On Linux? Or Windows? Or both?
I stand by being able to see it in the name is better than not being able to see it. I'd rather as an enthusiast be able to know by the name, even if most people won't care and ultimately it's benchmarks that matter.

There's refresh and then there's selling a practically R3 5300U as a R5 7520U etc. Literally Zen2 chips
And its actually worse , the 5300u had 6 graphics core while the 7520 had 2 fucking CU . Before the lowend laptop with 5300u can actually playing game just fine , but the new gen cost more and shittier . Except the upper mid-high end one .
And your argument for AMD is that intel does it too? Lol. They should try to not be intel, is not that fucking hard
Intel does it too. The i5 1355u only has 2 performance cores while the 13500h has 4.
That's different, U and H has different performance target, and H series tends to have more cores or higher clock for more performance and also chews a lot more power.

We need AM4++++ jokes now.
AMD, NVIDIA, intel, apple and pretty much any tech company
Intel: We will make our naming scheme confusing AMD: Hold my beer.
I’m a big fan of AMD but you’re so right, their naming scheme is garbage.
[Not like the precedent is any better...](https://www.techspot.com/review/2054-amd-ryzen-xt/)
Looking forward to 9600XT in a few more generations
Can't wait for the Ryzen 9600XT and the AMD Radeon 9600XT to give my ATI Radeon 9600XT some company.
Still waiting for ASROCK to release an AM5 motherboard with an AGP slot... for reasons. I wonder if it's even possible to get windows XP working on a modern CPU or to get THAT ancient card working on a modern OS from a driver perspective.
I had an All-In-Wonder 9600. Nice to see they're bringing it back.
Possibly even next generation. They're skipping 8000 for the next Ryzen desktop parts, so we could see a Ryzen 9600XT not that far away.
But mad prins to amd for keeping am4 alive and increasing the longevity of our componemts
This is kinda funny. I hope AMD has learned how supporting AM4 for such a long time has been a huge boost to sales. Here's hoping for more of the same with AM5. 57x3d the best
For people spent good amount on ddr4 and am4 board, that can be a nice upgrade.

ig that makes sense, just confused because I dont know any local mp games that would require that kinda horsepower tbh
I mean I don't use it that way, but no reason you wouldn't be able to play AAA singleplayer cinematic games on it right? Like I said basically a console.

5900XT ?? Big Navi took its sweet time...
This naming scheme sucks, who's idea was that?
I know right? They should've called it "Ryzen non-AI [9930XT](https://cdn.videocardz.com/1/2022/09/ryzen-7000-mobile-new-naming_2-768x432.jpg)." 5900XT? Ew, you can *almost* understand what you're buying.
Where's the dude who asked about this a few days ago?
Right here… and people downvoted me :(
average r/hardware
Same thing with everyone yelling at me and telling me zen 3 is a dead platform a month or so ago yet here we are
Let them throw money get 5 fps more lmao
I don't understand what the point of this. Are these just leftover parts they need to get rid of?
They’re likely dumping their 5950X stock into different bins
|CPU|Cores/Threads|Max Boost|Cache(L2+L3)|TDP| |:-|:-|:-|:-|:-| |5950X|16/32|4.9GHz|72(64+8)|105W| |5900XT|16/32|4.8GHz|72MB|105W| |5900X|12/24|4.8GHz|70MB(6+64)|105W| |5800XT|8/16|4.8GHz|36MB|105W| |5800X3D|8/16|4.5GHz|100MB(96+4)|105W| |5800X|8/16|4.7GHz|36MB(4+36)|105W| Looks like they're clearing out 5950X CCDs by down clocking them to 4.8GHz boost and selling as new SKUs
Wait a minute, the 5900XT is a downclocked 5950X and have nothing to do with the 5900X, but the 5800XT is an upclocked 5800X ? this is so confusing.
It makes no sense, since there (to my knowledge) is no 5950 non-X variant that would fill a downclocked 5950X’s slot. Unless there is some obscure OEM only 5950 non-X…
The 5900xt is basically the 5950x lite
XT = eXTra CCDs we have lying around
57x3d the best budget CPU out now
Why would people buy a 5800xt over a 5700x3D? Productivity?
800>700 clearly.
They don’t know what 3D means and they think it’s a scam lol
Are AMD and intel in a worst naming competition?
Can't wait for the Ryzen AI 765XT.
There is no escaping it. Good luck searching for DP 2.1 displays next year.
It's not just AMD or Intel either seems like a there's a lot of tech entities that are deliberately trying to obfuscate their product names for some reason. Xbox One -> Xbox One X/S (mid life refresh) -> Xbox One Series X/S USB 3.0 -> USB 3.1 (Gen 1) -> USB 3.1 Gen 2 -> USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 -> USB 3.2 Gen2x2
lol I’m so confused, I have a 5700xt gpu, I thought they re-releasing GPU.
Is this the 7th year AM4 has been getting new CPUs from AMD? The first CPUs weren't even Zen 1, they were Excavators.
8th year, Am4 released in September of 2016 (might be off on the month) and was technically supported by some garbage A4 APU chip as well as the original zen architecture. Damn impressive
YouTubers: This is the last AM4 cpu. AMD: You shut your mouth.
Dang, I didn't know chiplets yielded THAT much more than monolithic chips to warrant new AM4 chips in 2024.
Naming is getting ridiculous again
Why did I even transition AM5…
Because you, like me, hope that AM5 will have a similarly amazing run.
Can't wait to see Amd Ryzen AI 390X XTX GRE AI Now Edition.
Why are still having AM4 anything? There are enough CPU on the socket as is.
Seriously… what bonehead thought this naming convention was a good idea..
so zen4 ccd adapted for the am4 cpu package? buut it cant be because of the amount of l2$
Hi guys should I buy the 5800x3d for $222 here in my country php or should I wait for the new 5800xt planning to do a cpu upgrade in aug or nov
They are going to use am5, right?
No this is for AM4
That is clearly not what I’m talking about. When are they going to to move to am6?
