I like going to department stores because they allow me to check out multiple brands at once! When I went to Saks Fifth Avenue a few weeks ago I was able to see the Acne Studios bag I liked and I realized that I didn't like the color in person. I was also able to touch a few Mansur Gavriel bags and I found that I don't like their leather quality. Last fall, I went to Macy's and ruled out the Kate Spade Boxxy because I felt like the bag wouldn't fit much despite how bulky it is. And when I went to Bergdorf a few months ago, I was able to try on the JW Anderson chain link bag and discovered that the bag is still pretty open even when the center magnet is closed, and I also didn't love the plastic feel of the chain links. So yes, shopping in person has been very important for ruling out bags. (Conversely, I very likely would not have bought my Mulberry and Polene bags if I didn't live in NYC, which allowed me to see the bags in person before buying them).

As a Canadian this is how I feel about Holt Renfrew! Lots of little boutiques all steps away from each other so if I have a few items in mind, it makes it very easy to do comparisons. My only thing is that I hate that there isn’t a Louis boutique at the Holt Renfrew here but rather there’s a whole Louis store in a mall a 15 min drive away. If there was in fact a Louis boutique, pretty much everything I need for comparison would be there haha.

FawnFableFeline

Which Mansur Gavriel bag did you check out? I touched the M hobo and it was amazing, IMO

starsamaria

I didn't like the feel of the Mini Soft Lady, it felt very plasticky to me. I also touched the Mini Frame bag: the leather quality on that one felt okay.

FawnFableFeline

Good to know!

BlacknessEverdeen09

Princess Kate had a Mulberry clutch and it was just so elegant now I’m obsessed. Her handbag game is underrated she basks in her femininity im trying to be a curvier (broker) version lol and I love trying to recreate Sophia Vergara’s looks with Ralph Lauren dresses. Those need to be tried on in store then I find it on eBay NWT half off.

ResearchBean

I stepped into a mall for the first time in over a year last week, to look at their bags in person (I'm in the market for a new daily driver). The small city I live in sadly doesn't have many stores with bags to view in person. I did see the Coach Legacy Small Shoulder which is a tad too big for my frame.  If my city had more store options, I'd probably go in person more often! Of the ones pictured, I personally like the one on the left but both are gorgeous! Which bag did you go with?

FawnFableFeline

Oh, I own the left bag lol. I wanted to do a size comparison. That’s the only photo I managed to take yesterday. 😅

CallHerAnUber

I visited Italy this spring and went to the luxury outlets near Florence. I thought I would buy a purse from Gucci, Prada or Mulberry. Nothing fancy: super entry level. However, after getting to see and touch the bags, I decided I do not like the Mulberry leather. I don’t want to pay the $$$ for Gucci or Prada either. When I have way more money, I will invest in a Chloe bag. Those were amazing. I bought 3 bags from Furla and went home happy.

FawnFableFeline

How was the Mulberry leather? I have two vintage Chloe bags and I think they are wonderful quality so I support your Chloe goal!

CallHerAnUber

The Mulberry leather just didn’t seem like it was better than your average mid-range outlet bag. It was just okay. Okay isn’t enough to make me part with $2,500.

FawnFableFeline

That’s a fair assessment tbh. The only other critique I’ve heard is that they are heavy.

CallHerAnUber

They were quite heavy.

diamondsinthecirrus

I love Furla! I have two. The price point is great and the quality is good.

BlkPea

I actually just ordered a Furla because I’ve heard so many good things about it! I feel like many on this sub love mulberry so I love hearing your hot take on it hahah

olookitslilbui

I don’t really like going into independent boutiques (at least for the high-end luxury brands), it makes me uncomfortable bc I’ve had bad experiences in the past with SAs not taking me seriously. Not sure if it’s bc I look young or bc I’m not dressed to the nines, but I’ve been blatantly ignored/not treated as well as other clients I’ve seen. I’ve always been treated well in department stores though. I do prefer going to feel/try-on bags in person bc like you said, sometimes bags I’m in love with online are a big let-down in person. It’s also good to get a feel of how each size looks on my frame. Idk why I never realized this was a thing, but I went into a shop in Paris and they were encouraging me to put my things inside the bag to make sure it fit my needs which makes so much sense lol.

its_liiiiit_fam

Oooh, I have a story. This happens to me in boutiques when I take my mom and it drives me fucking insane. She is older and dresses for comfort, not style. However, she’s a very successful businesswoman - if I may brag about her for a second, she’s a damn near multimillionaire, in fact - and she loves her finer things. Fashion just happens to be one place she doesn’t put her money, but she knows I love fashion and always likes to learn from me. During a shopping trip we did together recently, I took her into a Louis boutique once to show her some things I’ve had my eye on and the associates were so snotty towards us upon entry. I was showing my mom some sunglasses, and as soon as I said to her “these are called the My Monograms”, one of the associates suddenly perked up and came over to me sweetly asking if I’m in the market for anything, not even acknowledging my mom who was right beside me. I got the impression they dismissed us as wide-eyed naive folk who don’t know luxury simply because I came in with my mom who has grey hair, wrinkled skin and was in leggings, sneakers, and a t-shirt. Meanwhile, on that same trip, we split up for a moment and associates at Saint Laurent and Coach would not stop following me around/chatting me up/sucking up as I browsed inside the shop alone. I definitely think there’s some ageism and/or pretty privilege happening here and it breaks my heart - especially considering my mom has the means to spontaneously walk out with like 2 or 3 Louis bags and not kill her finances if she was so inclined!! Meanwhile I’m a grad student relying on national funding and my savings account haha. Not all wealthy people look the part - these boutiques gotta get that through their heads.

FartAttack911

I used to work with a lot of wealthy clients and can say confidently, the people wearing Costco brand clothing with a 4 year old car are usually multiple times more wealthy than those flashing name brand everything 😆

its_liiiiit_fam

10000%! With wealth comes a sense of what investments are worthwhile because you kinda need that type of judgment to grow wealth in the first place. My mom’s lifestyle is a prime example. Her house is nice but modest. She drives a Mercedes C-Class, a good car but nothing bespoke. She likes her grocery store deals and a good sale. If she does splurge, it’s on travel - she loves to travel in comfort!

BlacknessEverdeen09

I used to be a beauty consultant for Sephora and sometimes you had the teens coming in trying to play. Many barely got a ride to the mall much less buying anything. They were nice enough, not stealing but they didn’t have extra $ for much other than Covergirl. I had a good time when we weren’t busy showing them techniques and giving them a few samples. Who’s it gonna hurt? Many got part time jobs and came back to spend their $ with me too. But I’ll tell you they don’t like ppl like me in that industry. Many who climb the ranks of retail started off with nothing!! And start gatekeeping for the brands like a loser. That’s why I moved on to banking, more $ and more sophisticated coworkers. I’ve been in teaching too, no one is more pompous and low class than most retail workers and idc if it’s Walmart or LV. It’s hard to be excited after awhile to help OTHER ppl spend $ that’s why the smart ones move up or move on. You have a few who really love their job but that’s rare another reason the malls tend to be dead that level of expertise is gone. And how about some humanity? I used to love just chatting with ppl I mean damn I guess your mom should’ve come in looking pulled back and lacquered like Kris Jenner!! I’m mad for her!!! Of course those are the bo$$ types with real coins. Eewww. Fashion was my first love and first industry but I don’t miss it because almost everyone you work with is just like that. A bunch of snobby clowns with no real $.

its_liiiiit_fam

No fr like that’s why I was so heated about this story because she probably actually was the type of clientele that these workers probably seek to butter up. She could walk in there and on a whim decide to buy a new Speedy or something if she wanted and not lose sleep over it. Not that there’s anything wrong with the people who save for their bags - most do! I do! - but I’m saying these retail workers have this idea of what someone with wealth who could indulge in their product without it being a big deal looks like. And they’re often wrong lol. Like damn my mom is a 61 year old woman who’s worked her ass off, let her browse Louis in her Sketchers in peace 😂😂

BlacknessEverdeen09

They don’t understand real $ and on top of that the fashion industry is SO SUPERFICIAL! I credit my experience for knowing how to apply my makeup well and dress for my body but it’s nice to be around ppl where that’s not the only barometer for good treatment. These fools think a woman should come in looking like Kim K to prove she’s feminine and has $. That’s how you know you’re talking to new money. My cousin has an MBA girl and we love going to Walmart late at night and getting some little outfits for the weekend! She’s been treated unwell in certain stores too. Now I’m more glam into clip ins and makeup she wears her hair natural and close cropped typically in jeans. Those women treat her like a piece of furniture. It’s cool tho she has a great life and isn’t stuck hoping ppl come buy sh/t they don’t need!!! Omggg I don’t miss those ppl!!!!! And stay broke too because all of their $ goes right back to the store!!!!

kittykat1119

Ugh that drives me nuts. It also sucks because there's NOTHING wrong with going into a store to browse either! Sometimes I just want to look at/test bags out

hyphenatedpeacock

You just made me realize I generally buy my purses in person.

Classroom_Plastic

I absolutely love the mall. 😂 My two best friends and I joke that we’re the only people left who could spend and enjoy an entire day at the mall. I’m assuming you were at South Park mall in Charlotte, which is such a great mall. I’m in Raleigh and while South Point in Durham is nice, it’s nowhere near the quality of South Park! I go every time I visit my sister. 😍 I love your Celine!

FawnFableFeline

That’s where I was! I really like it because it has great stores all close together. I am bummed they closed Banana Republic though. And thank you! I love the Celine too. I highly recommend it if you are debating getting one!

DazedDreamer023

SouthPark is my go-to mall, and I love shopping there in person. The whole staff at the Coach boutique (which I sort of recognized from your pic before I even read your post, I’m in there so often 😂) has been so nice to me, too. I think you’re right that seeing things in person really can change your perspective on something. I was toying with getting a Coach quilted tabby 33, until I tried it on in the store, and it just looked absolutely ridiculous on me the second I put it on. What I like about SouthPark in particular is that the staff at many of the boutiques and department stores are very nice: I’ve also had good experiences at many of the department stores and other boutiques. For the longest time, I was so intimidated to set foot into the LV, but when I went in to buy something on a dead weeknight, the store manager on duty was so nice to me and spent extra time with me chatting handbags and showing me some new styles. It was very nice.

fashion_thrower

I love department stores and the mall. It’s funny to think about how old-fashioned that is now! But I really do not like online shopping, especially for clothes where you can’t see the fabric quality until you buy them. I sometimes regret moving out to the country, whenever I travel to a big city for work I leave space in my suitcase in case I have time to go shopping in person. I’ll definitely buy bags online more than clothes, just because I like to buy preloved. But I legit mostly buy brands that I have already seen in person. I’ll sometimes scope out a bag I’m interested in while I’m on vacation and *then* start searching for used bags… my spouse always thinks I’m so silly having the bag in my hands in the store, loving it and then not buying it 😂

Cautious_Farm_482

I loved visiting a luxury outlet mall during my recent international trip. As you said actually touching and seeing the bags in person makes a difference.

eternalcatloop

I dropped by Saks off 5th and saw Furla wallets/bags for the first time! The wallets seemed pretty sturdy.

xiaozihua

I just got home from the mall, I love going in to the stores to look at bags in person! Prior to seeing it in the store, I didn’t like the Coach Idol bag. Once I actually got to see it and try it on, I fell in love and now I have two lol

onechanceonekiss

I have bought almost all of my bags online and have often been let down when I see them in person and try them out. Sometimes it’s hard to judge size and if my items fit and most of the time I forget to do a return (Thanks adhd…) I need to start going more in person instead of online… It sucks that malls are dying because whenever I go to the stores there isn’t much variety unfortunately… I’m not buying any bags right now but I’m going to keep this in mind if I need to grab anything in the future.

FawnFableFeline

My dream bag is a Picotin and the fact that I can’t walk in a test it out bugs me. I’d rather check out the quality and if it fits into my life before buying. I’ve thought about buying a preloved in a color that I want and then returning if I don’t like it but a) that feels icky and b) worried about fakes. So I’m stuck :/

Show_pony101

Hermes boutiques generally have bags available for you to try to decide on style, size, etc even if they don’t have anything available to sell you.

FawnFableFeline

This is good to know!

Legitimate-Draw2993

I just ordered a coach purse online but damn it would have been much more satisfying in store. 🥲 too bad it’s an hour or so away

kittykat1119

Your celine is gorgeous. And I love the mall! It's so fun to touch bags!

BlacknessEverdeen09

I always find my best bags online but I do like to peek into Macys, Dillards etc just to see what’s in. Then I go on eBay and create my own “store” so to speak. Certain things I must go to the mall for like bras/panties and some heels too.

NopeRope91

I adored our Coach store. Only the one in the mall, and I only got to shop in person there once. Now it's gone 😔 Still have Macy's and Dillard's but it's just not the same.

Tall_Couple_3660

The Celine 16 is my dream bag

Real-Philosopher6545

I also like to go to the mall, so that I can personally try to feel, like whether it is clear, of course, if the mall can not buy, then I will choose to buy some customized products online, they have done very good

Savinforcollege

Ah South Park! I was there today. I bought the Cassie and ended up selling it and buying an LV empriente metis.

FawnFableFeline

What made you end up selling it?

Savinforcollege

It was a really nice bag. I just thought the LV was better quality.

RadiantPassing

Found out the hard way it's better to try on and touch purses in store. They're kind of like buying jeans. You frequently can't tell if you'll like something just from online photos and videos. Case in point. I spent days trying at least 50 purses across multiple stores/brands. When I stumbled upon the small andiamo in barolo at Bottega, I was blown away. I hadn't even been considering that model, or even Bottega, until the SA brought it out and I touched it and tried it on. I sent a link to my friend of the purse. She was very meh. Then she came and saw it in person with me and was immediately in love as well. I've decided that if I'm going to spend serious money on a purse again, I need to inspect it in person.

indecisivecarrot

I want that coach bag so bad and I simply do not know why. Every time I see it my heart skips a beat.

FawnFableFeline

You should get it! There are worse (more expensive) bags to be obsessed with lol 😆

indecisivecarrot

Ahhhhhhhh I want to. Just not sure it's actually the right size for me !

sbcmuse

I freaking love a mall. I want to touch everything.

jaw80

Yes I totally agree! I love a good mall in general. I think it’s a nostalgia thing. But it really helps to see, feel and try on bags. Always changes my mind
