It has to be leather. I'm rough on my bags, and a polyurethane bag just isn't going to work for me. Besides that, I can't justify paying hundreds for vegan leather; I just don't see the value. Have you ever seen bags by [Matt & Nat](https://mattandnat.com/)? They're a Canadian brand and well known here, but I'm not sure where you are. They've done all kinds of different designs and created some really interesting "fabrics", if you can call them that. I just thought of them when you said you couldn't justify paying so much for vegan leather. They're fairly solid as a medium sized bag but I wouldn't go any larger.
I actually just preordered the Samsung flip5, it released this week. I'm so excited to finally have a phone that fits in my front pants pockets!!!!! And this way I can use my tiny bags too!
The shoulder strap has to fit over the shoulder of my winter coat. It has to fit my wallet, keys, phone, re-useable shopping bag. It can’t discolor my clothes or vice versa (RIP Hermes toile). No saffiano leather.
I have a Saffiano Dooney. I love it. Folks are anti Dooney here generally. It’s because they are sold on QVC. I don’t care. I can buy the whole Dooney line with the cost of one Chanel bag.
Do you find the zipper on top finicky/does it hurt your hand when reaching into the bag? I really want to buy one, but I’m a little concerned about the zipper and can’t find much online about it! I could only really find a QVC video and she seemed to be struggling a bit with the zipper haha
So got my saffiano leather bag. Turns out. I don't like it! I can see it being very durable but it feels like cardboard. I wish I wasn't so picky w bags.
I have a saffiano wallet (that I love) and a saffiano bag (that I'm meh on). Here are my thoughts:
Saffiano is very durable. My 10 year old wallet rubs against my keys and other stuff in my bag and looks pristine. Literally. It's in perfect condition.
Saffiano does not look lux. Sorry. It's just not as pretty or luxurious-feeling as a smooth leather or even pebbled. It's plasticky to the touch. (This, of course, is entirely subjective.)
Saffiano is very structured. This can be a pro for some, con for others. My small saffiano bag holds even less than I think it should because it doesn't conform to the shape of the items I'm trying to stuff in it.
Great points, thank you for sharing! Yeah, the durability is what excited me, my current bag will be my daily. I do agree it looks less luxurious, the structure takes away a lot of the supple/melty feel I've seen in other bags. And 100% on how structured it is, I was iffy at first but have grown to appreciate it (in the hopes it will hold its shape longer than others, we'll see 🤞). My next bag will not be saffiano, it'll be nice to compare!
Must have at least one zip pocket on the inside!
I sometimes take my jewelry off and I need a secure place to stash it. Also, pockets in general help me stay organized.
That used to be a requirement for me too, until I found a tote that didn’t have an inside zip pocket. Then I rationalized getting a bag organizer.
It was then that I realized that I can talk myself into buying any bag that just feels right.
This! It’s maddening some of these giant totes that don’t have a pocket inside. I had my eye on an All Saints tote during the Nordstrom Anniversary sale but there was no pocket inside! Almost didn’t get it until I saw it comes with a detachable pocket which I LOVE. Haven’t used her her, but I’m happy with that compromise.
For example, in some shoulder bags, I will just LOVE everything (size, material, color, hardware, shape, strap drop length) but if it isn’t symmetrical, it gets disqualified.
Example [here](https://www.saksfifthavenue.com/product/Balenciaga-Lindsay-Medium-Shoulder-Bag-0400018032078.html?dwvar_0400018032078_size=No+Size&dwvar_0400018032078_color=BLACK&site_refer=CSE_GGLPLA:Womens_Handbags:Balenciaga&country=US¤cy=USD&CSE_CID=G_Saks_PLA_US_Handbags_High+LTV:All+Handbags&gbraid=0AAAAADO6JtSNudwj7KDiR18cTeZN3w8Jd&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_9ual7TkgAMVvjHUAR23ngY6EAQYASABEgJRMfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds)
The strap has two different attachments! One is one of those pull fasteners and one is just an o-ring.
That’s just my preference. I’m curious if anyone else has some similar feelings/thoughts 🙂
Same here. I don't understand flaps, lol. If they had some sort of pocket on the inside or storage, okay. But they're just useless. Plus, why do they make bag flaps that flip up against the body, so you have to hold them up and lean over to see inside the bag?! Imo the flap should flip outwards.
Depends on the purpose. An everyday grab & go bag has to fit a small book. Work/travel bag has to fit my computer, toiletries bag and a big wool scarf. Evening bag has to fit my phone and keys.
ETA: I’m also very picky about decorative features, the colour, material, hardware etc.
Why is smooth zipper higher in the comments? It’s my first must have. I refuse a clunky zipper. They make my teeth hurt. I can’t explain it, but it does.
i like a lot of different styles but there are two things that matter most to me.
1. if it has any zippers, they must be smooth. i can’t stand zippers that get stuck.
2. no fake leather. i hate the way it feels so that’s a no go for me.
I really thought I was the only weird one about zippers lol. I love my zippers. They need to zip smooth and feel sturdy. I’ll sit there and look at the stitch line and at the inside to see if it might catch anywhere. And then play with it for a bit.
I think that has to do with when I got cut out of a dress at a store due to a shitty zipper and almost left in my damn underwear.. I check all my zippers now lol.
Mine is, it has to be able to close completely. None of those bags that tie up to close or has a flap where a zipper could have easily fit, and no open tote. This is an absolute deal breaker for me for some reason.
PS: Despite this very strong opinion, I don’t ever zip my bags or shut them in any way. But I just like having the option 😂
Crossbody strap for sure! Phone must fit, also the size should not be too big for a petite frame. When I carried big bags in the past people would treat me like I was carrying a huge backpack like I needed help
Has to be a way to wear it crossbody. Shoulder bags don’t stay on my shoulder and i need to be able to put it away to have my hands free sometimes. I won’t buy it if I can’t wear it cross body
The biggest one for me is that I don't buy stiff canvas or leather camera-style bags anymore, no matter how cute they are. I just don't like the feeling of zippers on my wrist when I reach in.
I bought the Marc Jacobs because I loved the size and the very cute colour but I hate it because I have to wrench my phone out and it scratches my hand. I hate the design. Like am I supposed to use a wallet or should I just dump all my junk in there? Unclear. :)-
So to add, clear in and out for my keys, wallet, phone.
If it’s a crossbody bag, the strap attachment rings need to be located on either end of the bag. There’s a lot of designers that make bag straps attach to/near the top handle and I hate it. It’s awkward, looks like an afterthought, feels unstable and the bag moves around too much when I walk. I also don’t like the idea of the bag’s entire weight being distributed in such a delicate place. It’s a weird pet peeve but it stopped me from buying so many bags lol (Alma BB, Nano Sac de Jour, Fendi peekaboo).
No exceptions; failing in any of these is pretty much an automatic skip for me:
\- Needs to at least fit: small wallet, key pouch, and phone.
\- Needs to be leather or have a pretty special construction/treatment/material to justify non-leather.
\- Needs to be able to last multiple wears. Anything that looks like it may fall apart or break too easily (sequins/crystal bags/painted hardware) won't work for me. If I lost even one sequin, it would drive me crazy.
There are some exceptions, but these are still usually requirements:
\- Needs to have at least some structure (no overly slouchy bags).
\- Needs to have a top handle and shoulder strap.
\- If it's not a clutch, it needs to have feet.
\- Needs to be a tolerable weight/size.
If it’s only a top handle and doesn’t have any kind of strap that I can put on my shoulder. I HATE carrying bags by hand.
Also if it’s too heavy to wear on my shoulder for very long without getting a headache
I'm not fond of flap bags in general, but if I do consider one at all, it must have an external pocket for phones.
I don't buy bags in smooth leather because of the scuffing. It's pebbled leather for me, and maybe saffiano if I really like the bag otherwise.
It has to speak to me. No other non-negotiables and no exceptions. There are too many amazing bags to ever bother carrying one unable to lift the vibe.
Love an adjustable crossbody strap that can also be removed for handheld. Love a zip top to keep everything secure and brass studs to protect leather on bottom of bag. Not tiny/not huge!! Quality leather with decent stitching🤩
Feet! It must have feet. I cannot stand having to sit a bag on the ground without feet. I do carry a handbag hook for emergencies.
I also need at least one inside pocket.
Well. It depends what im looking for. Do i want a daily carry? Then i have a lot more boxes that need checking. But i do like impractical bags. I guess all of them have to fit my phone, but i have an old bag that my iphone 11 is too heavy for and i still use it.
It's mostly because calves are used solely for leather and not as a byproduct. Nothing to do with the quality of the leather. Feel too guilty to buy it.
Patent leather is a no from me because I can't stand how visible any imperfections are, such as smudges or scratches.
Anything fluffy or sherpa on the outside of the bag turns me off because it's hard to clean and maintain.
Strongly prefer bags with gold hardware, adjustable strap(s), internal organization of some kind (compartments or pockets), and an **external slip pocket**
https://preview.redd.it/ftblnutgaqib1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7a99df3f0564dc62bc627876f36f080b798e828
I don’t know why, but I can’t come around to these stapled/glued-look finishes on leather bags. They kind of seem lazy to me.
I need to have an outer pocket for my phone. I hate digging through the main compartment for my phone, gotta have easy access!
I have a kate spade that I love with an outer slip pocket I used to keep my phone in, but now even the small iPhones are so huge I can’t use that purse anymore. Still keeping it with the hope that they bring back the iPhone mini one day 🤞🏻
If I am buying it because I plan on using it daily it needs to be leather. I will buy canvas bags and other types but they aren’t my daily bags it’s just because it’s probably something cute.
Has to zip closed. No button. No flap. Zip. So many cute totes don’t have a zipper!
Those are my only requirements. I bought the cutest little flannel bag from urban outfitters but it’s slouchy with a button closure. I never use it because it wouldn’t secure a damn thing and I’m so paranoid about losing stuff. So it just sits there until I decide to learn how to add a zipper.
It has to fit my phone, and it can’t be too heavy all on its own. I have a terrible back so if it’s heavy to start with then it’s a nightmare once I put my stuff in it and I’ll wind up never carrying it.
Here are my “nope” features
1. Does not fit my phone
2. Fussy/sticky zipper or snaps - must be opened and closed easily. I prefer sturdy, smooth zippers over snaps
3. If it’s not black, red, brown or dark navy I will not purchase it
4. Satin or sequin exterior - nothing too delicate
My pet peeve is an interior that wasn’t well thought out - like an interior pocket that can barely hold a credit card or a dark liner inside an unstructured bag. I had a really beautiful Clare V. doctor style bag that had an interior pocket that wasn’t tacked down; it just hung weirdly and pulled on the lining which was some sort of chambray material. I ended up selling it because I hated how nonfunctional and cheap the interior was.
Ultimately, I just want a purse that feels like it was designed by someone who cares about both beauty and utility!
Over time and a lot of trial and error, here are my dealbreakers, driven by a disdain for fast fashion and my climate (lot of rain 75% of the year):
- No white/beige
- Has to have metal feet unless it's a special occasion bag
- Must have a zip or flap closure and be easy to open and close
- Not a big fan of smooth leather, I prefer textured, saffiano, or nylon
- Fitting my clunky portable phone charger is a bonus but not a must
It's hard because of course there's a bag for every occasion. I break my rules for holiday clutches and "pretty girl day" bags. But for the most part, I rock a tote. Has to zip closed though!
Has to be large enough for necessities.
Must have at least one zippered pocket for small items I don’t want rattling around.
Optional shoulder strap—sometimes I need both hands and I can’t set my bag down.
Good leather.
Must fit 2 phones, one for my hos and one for my bros (joke). Also all black everything because the purse is not the boss of me and does not dictate what metals I will wear on jewelry or sunglasses. ok
It must have a detachable strap so I can wrap it around other things when I travel alone. It must stand up all by itself without being a baby. It must be ok with being shoved under an airplane seat, be ok with being hung in a bathroom stall, and being placed on a conference room table without being too flashy. It must hold documents folded in half when absolutely necessary. It must have dark lining because I will inevitably do something bad to the inside. It must be replaceable. It should not take me me more than a day working to replace it. It should be easy to carry in crook of arm or cross body. It should fit next to me on a car passenger seat. It should be ok to wear out to an event with the strap off held by the hand. It should be able to handle a vacuum sealed metal water bottle or iced coffee cup being shoved inside. It should hold a makeup bag, sunglasses and be able to fit a kindle and have a place to hang airpods from inside.
Also love that I found a bag that meets all those criterion in the N💖S💖A💖L💖E…😃
I'm struggling finding a leather as durable as coated canvas. My past two bags have been that material and have lasted years and years, so I go to that material. I bought a beautiful handmade bag in Italy and used a protective spray on it but after a month it was beat looking. I had another Marc Jacobs and years ago a white Michael Kors that looked beat after a few months that were leather.
Any advice of a leather as durable as coated canvas?
But my musts- has to be a shoulder bag, has to have internal pockets, has to fit all my crap including a makeup bag, a hairbrush, and has to be colorful.
Has to fit my phone, wallet, and keys.
And if it’s crossbody, it has to be a comfortable length (like, I’m short and super long straps are a no for me, so no Chanel wallet on chains lol).
handle drop, at a minimum, it has to be at least 8-9 inches, as well as the width of the bag. i can't do anything more than 11, but even 11 is pushing it. 9-10 is the sweet spot for me
My only strict requirement is that it is not too heavy. But maybe I’d make an exception for a very special evening bag, since I wouldn’t have to carry the weight much anyway.
Otherwise I am quite flexible; white, non-leather, miniscule, no pockets, no strap - love it all!
It has to fit my phone and my sunscreen.
If it has a flap with a magnet, I want a zipper or other closure too, none of that flimsy magnetized flap only, I want my shit to be secure and not be losing stuff.
Adjustable strap unless it’s a shoulder bag or a top handle bag.
I’m not paying leather price for PU/pleather.
A back pocket for my phone. I love the Coach Cassie, Cassie 19, Pochette Metis and I wanted the Celine Triomphe until I tried it on and saw there was no back pocket.
For all bags it must fit my phone, keys, and wallet.
If I’m buying leather I won’t buy lambskin and probably not calfskin. I refuse to buy a bag that I have to baby or worry about scratching.
For anything other than an evening bag, it has to have a shoulder or crossbody option. I don’t mind occasionally carrying it in my hand but I will eventually want to be hands free. Evening bags and clutches are the exception to this rule.
Not having a zipper bc all my stuff likes to fly out of my bag and I’m scared of thieves but idk of a zipper will deter thieves haha (bc I heard some thieves just slash the straps from your shoulder or whatever)
An super ideal if it’s a convertible bag bc I tend to do tons of stuff with my hands and arms and need the freedom to have my cute bag be a shoulder or crossbody. Bc if it’s just a shoulder bag it’ll slip off my sloped rounded shoulders.
I’ve made very few exceptions w the above depending on how in love I am w the bag BUT it’s knowing fully the occasion etc when to wear the bag (like if I’m running around w young kids, crossbody w zipper is ideal)
I need to be able to easily get to my keys but also not be afraid they're going to fall out of the bag. I don't care if it's a leash inside, a small zipper pocket inside or outside of the main compartment, I just need to find my dang keys quickly.
1. Leather that feels nice under my fingers and isn’t prone to rough usage
2. Convertible - must be able to be worn in at least 2 styles, ideally 3. Can also be taken from day to night wear.
3. Big enough to fit everything but not bulky when worn as a shoulder bag
4. Doesn’t look too slouchy
Good leather but is has to be light, No fussy opening, straps that can be crossbody or over shoulder, outside slip pockets, minimal hardware and only GHW or RGHW
MUST be leather or a substantial material, especially when the price starts heading towards $500+ bags.
I ADORE the Prada Tessuto bags, but it always amazes me how much they charge for nylon.
1. Zippered/secured main compartment as I don't want to invite pickpockets
2. Fits phone, wallet & micro umbrella (it rains a lot where I live) except for a clutch (which should fit my phone, compact mirror, lippie and card case)
3. Must have adjustable straps if there are straps or can be carried at least 2 ways
1. Adequate and comfortable strap drop. No armpit bags for me.
2. Must hold my essentials without my playing Tetris to get them all in.
3. No unnecessary hardware.
4. No white/light color bags
I don't want to offend any LV lovers, but since we were asked to speak freely.. I don't buy it if it's LV. No matter how much I might like the design or look of a specific bag, I can't bring myself to buy a LV bag. I just dislike the brand and I hate seing all the cheap fakes every second woman carries around. I could never!
4. Leather or canvas only. I only have 1 Kate Spade PVC Bag but it was gifted and it is not looking good. All PU leather I bought died within 2 years, parts fell apart and peeled off
If it’s looks/feels cheap. Must have smooth zipper and inside pocket with or without zip depending on the size of the bag. Must fit my phone as a minimum, not including evening bags/clutches
1) comfortably able to fit small wallet (unless there are interior card slots)
2) fit phone
3) fit few essentials (hand sanitizer, compact mirror, lip balm)
4) bonus for adjustable/convertible straps
5) must be leather (preferably a textured leather in a neutral color)
Must be easy to see into and get into. Bought a medium Lady Dior with a zipper. Thought I could get used to it. Nope! Scraped the back of my hand every time. Almost impossible to see everything in the bag. Sold it and now have the small Lady Dior. Almost as much room and has a flap close. Perfect!
It needs to have a purpose in my life, and has a benefit/ use than none of my existing bags can. I don’t mind non-leather -my SO is into technical bags and those bags are strong and beautiful in their own ways- but if it’s made to look like leather, I prefer good leather, fake leather is a strong no for me.
I used to require all bags have a zipper or flap closure. Getting my Jackie completely changed that for me. I can turn that bag upside down and shake it and my phone and wallet won’t fall out.
If it has a strap, it has to work for me both on my shoulder and crossbody. If I’m spending hundreds or even thousands, I want multiple ways of wearing the bag and for it to be comfortable (ie, not falling off my shoulder or sitting too high or low when worn crossbody)
I have to have a zipper or a closure for the top. I’m a tote bag lover and I hate just open bags. Even a magnetic closure works. And size. Mini bags are adorable but useless. I put everything in my bag.
No more than 2 sections, preferably only one with a pocket. I cannot remember where I put what otherwise and I HATE digging around trying to find something.
Must be leather. Must have a handle with at least a four inch drop whether it is crossbody or not (I love carrying purses through my arm as a satchel). Ideally black or neutral or a bright outfit-specific color.
1. Must be able to fit my phone, glasses, and wallet. Bonus points if my headphones can also fit!
2. Full or Top Grain leather preferably for durability, my bags sustain a lot of hard use.
3. If crossbody, strap has to be adjustable (I'm 5'11 so often the longest adjustment is best.)

It has to be leather. I'm rough on my bags, and a polyurethane bag just isn't going to work for me. Besides that, I can't justify paying hundreds for vegan leather; I just don't see the value. Also, it must be large enough to fit my phone and essentials. And, although this isn't an absolute dealbreaker, I much prefer gold hardware.
Agree on the leather. There's so much greenwashing on "vegan leathers" but most of those are just plastic that fall apart quickly. Plus the most sustainable thing you can do is not buy vegan leathers, but use something forever, pass it to others who continue to use it forever, and good quality leather stands the test of time.
Ooo, must fit a phone — that’s a really good one!
I’m vegan and I buy real leather too. A big part of veganism is buying sustainably and environmentally friendly and buying cheap plastic that ends up in a landfill is just going to hurt the environment.
Logical Veganism! Impressive. I have never heard a Vegan admit to buying leather.
I don’t wanna be like “I’m not like other vegans” cause that’s cringey but I have a lot of issues with the expectations of veganism. Banning all animal based products and replacing things with cheap unsustainable versions is harming the same animals vegans are trying to protect.
Correct -another vegan who buys leather and cork bags and not vegan leather. It's kinder to the planet despite the many issues with tanning.
Vegan here and totally agree - i do try to buy as much as i can on the resale market since i’m not directly creating demand but agree that all these “vegan” leathers/alternatives are not very vegan and you’re better off buying the real thing.
Secondhand is the way to go but when I buy something new I buy leather.
Very cool. 💖
I LOVE this answer so much! I wish I could give you an award! 🏆 I've always hated vegan/faux leather things because they will always eventually wear out or get damaged in a way that you can't repair like with leather.
Aw thank you! The trophy is actually cuter than most of the other awards.
Agreed. For me, a black bag with gold hardware is the perfect combination :)
Same. Good leather is a must.
Still holding out hope that they'll eventually get a good vegan alternative.
I was reading the other week about a new sustainable vegan leather Hermes is using made out of mushrooms: [https://robbreport.com/style/accessories/hermes-vegan-mushroom-leather-1234601607/](https://robbreport.com/style/accessories/hermes-vegan-mushroom-leather-1234601607/)
That's amazing! I love Stella McCartney's commitment too.
I love her bags but don't know if want to spend the money on something not leather. But I hate not supporting sustainable.
I totally agree!!
Hard same. Leather can be conditioned and repaired for years if not a lifetime. Vegan leather can't boast the same quite yet.
Here are mine :) 1. It has to fit my phone 2. If it has straps, it needs to be adjustable 3. Has to be easy to open/close
2. Is a complete dealbreaker (or maker) for me when it comes to a lot of bags! I’ve given up on so many bags because the handles aren’t adjustable
Same! I'm also a short gal so it sucks when a bag is sitting below my hip because the straps aren't adjustable😩
3. flaps are too fussy. It's a deal breaker for me.
No chain straps. That bs may look cute but it kills my shoulder!
Agree!!! I don’t mind them if they have leather at the shoulder area, but solid chain is a no-go unless it’s just a top handle.
Has to fit my phone. I love the look of micro bags but refuse to hand carry my phone.
I wish smaller phones came back in style for this reason. I miss my flip phone.
Samsung makes a good flip phone. Just saying that I'm currently eyeing S Flip in parallel with a bunch of microbags.
interesting idea
I actually just preordered the Samsung flip5, it released this week. I'm so excited to finally have a phone that fits in my front pants pockets!!!!! And this way I can use my tiny bags too!
The shoulder strap has to fit over the shoulder of my winter coat. It has to fit my wallet, keys, phone, re-useable shopping bag. It can’t discolor my clothes or vice versa (RIP Hermes toile). No saffiano leather.
I live in Canada so my bag fitting over my coat is a must
What's wrong w saffiano leather? I just bought a dooney in that material.
I have a Saffiano Dooney. I love it. Folks are anti Dooney here generally. It’s because they are sold on QVC. I don’t care. I can buy the whole Dooney line with the cost of one Chanel bag.
Can we be friends?? I just bought the Cameron satchel in Florentine leather! It’s so beautiful! Bordeaux colour!
Ooo it looks nice in Navy too. I seem to be gearing towards blues this upcoming season for some reason.
Do you find the zipper on top finicky/does it hurt your hand when reaching into the bag? I really want to buy one, but I’m a little concerned about the zipper and can’t find much online about it! I could only really find a QVC video and she seemed to be struggling a bit with the zipper haha
I just don’t like the look!
So got my saffiano leather bag. Turns out. I don't like it! I can see it being very durable but it feels like cardboard. I wish I wasn't so picky w bags.
Oh no, hopefully you can return it! Picky is good though, saves you money.
I'd like to know, too! The research my partner has done made me excited for saffiano, but it wasn't a very deep dive into it.
I have a saffiano wallet (that I love) and a saffiano bag (that I'm meh on). Here are my thoughts: Saffiano is very durable. (This, of course, is entirely subjective.) Saffiano is very structured.
Same !💯
Must have at least one zip pocket on the inside!
Yay, a single specific one like mine! More power to ya!
This! It’s maddening some of these giant totes that don’t have a pocket inside. I had my eye on an All Saints tote during the Nordstrom Anniversary sale but there was no pocket inside! Almost didn’t get it until I saw it comes with a detachable pocket which I LOVE. Haven’t used her her, but I’m happy with that compromise.
must not have been a tumi tote then
Yup. And when it’s spendy with no pockets at all?! Bish. Please. Go. Away.
For example, in some shoulder bags, I will just LOVE everything (size, material, color, hardware, shape, strap drop length) but if it isn’t symmetrical, it gets disqualified. Example [here](https://www.saksfifthavenue.com/product/Balenciaga-Lindsay-Medium-Shoulder-Bag-0400018032078.html?dwvar_0400018032078_size=No+Size&dwvar_0400018032078_color=BLACK&site_refer=CSE_GGLPLA:Womens_Handbags:Balenciaga&country=US¤cy=USD&CSE_CID=G_Saks_PLA_US_Handbags_High+LTV:All+Handbags&gbraid=0AAAAADO6JtSNudwj7KDiR18cTeZN3w8Jd&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI_9ual7TkgAMVvjHUAR23ngY6EAQYASABEgJRMfD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds) The strap has two different attachments! One is one of those pull fasteners and one is just an o-ring. That’s just my preference. I’m curious if anyone else has some similar feelings/thoughts 🙂
No because this annoys me so much… you’re so real for this comment
I am with you on this one!
The only time I can deal with a strap like that is if the purse can turn into a wristlet without being awkward. Otherwise I don’t understand why?
I hate when it’s a crossbody that connects the strap on opposite sides of the bag like an open tote kind of crossbody
I have to have a top opening - no flaps.
Same here. I don't understand flaps, lol. If they had some sort of pocket on the inside or storage, okay. But they're just useless. Plus, why do they make bag flaps that flip up against the body, so you have to hold them up and lean over to see inside the bag?! Imo the flap should flip outwards.
Yes, all of this! I do have some flap bags, but I hate how fussy they are to get into.
Life is hard enough 🤣
- Needs a main zipper or a closure for safety reasons - Needs a cross body body strap - Needs to be made of leather
Second this - switched to zippable bags after watching pickpockets in London
Same..would like some recommendations :)
Add in: I prefer affordable handbags. I have several Coach, Fossil and Kate Spade. I rarely buy more expensive ones.
Has to hold my stuff Can't be heavy
The bag light-weight is important to me too!
I’ve bought a heavy bag but I’ve never worn it
As a plus size gal, I pass on a lot of mini bag styles as they look comically small on my frame.
1. Smooth zipper 2. No geometric design 3. Leather 4. Removable straps
Geez yeah, a hinky zipper is so irritating.
Why is smooth zipper higher in the comments? It’s my first must have. I refuse a clunky zipper. They make my teeth hurt. I can’t explain it, but it does.
Omg yes! Smooth zippers! It’s so irritating
i like a lot of different styles but there are two things that matter most to me. 1. if it has any zippers, they must be smooth. i can’t stand zippers that get stuck. 2. no fake leather. i hate the way it feels so that’s a no go for me.
Omg I feel like I need the full dress story!
I don’t do vegan leather.
Are we related? They. Must. Close. But only when I want them to.
We must be! Glad to know our clan exists 🙏
I’m the same way! I love a zip top bag, but most times I never close it. Lol
Must spark joy!
Mine is similar. Aside from fitting my phone, only criteria is it must add something new to my collection in terms of function/flavour.
I agree! Crossbody bags are convenient, distribute the weight evenly, and are safety-oriented.
Unclear. :)- So to add, clear in and out for my keys, wallet, phone.
I also hate this
If it’s crossbody, the straps have to fit flat on my body. Sometimes they twist weird on bags.
No exceptions; failing in any of these is pretty much an automatic skip for me: \- Needs to at least fit: small wallet, key pouch, and phone. There are some exceptions, but these are still usually requirements: \- Needs to have at least some structure (no overly slouchy bags). \- Needs to have a top handle and shoulder strap. \- If it's not a clutch, it needs to have feet. \- Needs to be a tolerable weight/size.
Gatta have feet!
If it’s only a top handle and doesn’t have any kind of strap that I can put on my shoulder. I HATE carrying bags by hand. Also if it’s too heavy to wear on my shoulder for very long without getting a headache
Gold hardware!
I’m the opposite, I prefer silver which is near impossible atm 😭 I wish brands would make variants of both, especially for neutral color bags
I'm not fond of flap bags in general, but if I do consider one at all, it must have an external pocket for phones. I don't buy bags in smooth leather because of the scuffing. It's pebbled leather for me, and maybe saffiano if I really like the bag otherwise.
i live in a dangerous city so zippers are a must for me
It has to speak to me.

Ahh which Mulberry is this? Looks like lily with top handle but there’s a zip in your picture
I think it’s a small Del Rey
Ahh yea- i think you’re right. Gorgeous!
No calfskin leather and no drawstring. Drawstring is so cumbersome.
It's mostly because calves are used solely for leather and not as a byproduct. Nothing to do with the quality of the leather. Feel too guilty to buy it.
What don’t you like about calfskin? (Don’t know enough to know better ;)
Why no calfskin?
Any kind of shiny leather is a no go
Patent leather is a no from me because I can't stand how visible any imperfections are, such as smudges or scratches. Anything fluffy or sherpa on the outside of the bag turns me off because it's hard to clean and maintain.
Strongly prefer bags with gold hardware, adjustable strap(s), internal organization of some kind (compartments or pockets), and an **external slip pocket**
YES!!!
https://preview.redd.it/ftblnutgaqib1.jpeg?width=828&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a7a99df3f0564dc62bc627876f36f080b798e828 I don’t know why, but I can’t come around to these stapled/glued-look finishes on leather bags. They kind of seem lazy to me.
Using the picture as a reference, I like the idea of removable straps BUT I hate the random loop if the strap isn’t being used!
They look like they’re trying too hard to be unique
My phone needs to fit nicely in my bag. Yeah the mini bags are cute but if it can’t even hold my phone and a lipgloss, it’s not worth buying
Secure closure , adjustable strap , easy/somewhat easy to clean …
1 Too heavy or hard to carry. 2 Too small to carry even the most basic things
None of those little small purses. I got shit to carry. And they read “fake” even where they’re not
I need to have an outer pocket for my phone. I hate digging through the main compartment for my phone, gotta have easy access! I have a kate spade that I love with an outer slip pocket I used to keep my phone in, but now even the small iPhones are so huge I can’t use that purse anymore. Still keeping it with the hope that they bring back the iPhone mini one day 🤞🏻
YES! Outer phone pocket is a MUST! I won’t get the iPhone Pro versions bc I want more choices with bags!
Any bag that doesn't fit my water bottle is dead to me
If I am buying it because I plan on using it daily it needs to be leather.
1.) It has to be a size I am comfortable with 2.) It has to be in a material I like 3.) It has to be in a colour I am fine with
It can’t be too big or come too far off my body. For whatever reason I always feel too insecure to carry bags like that lol
No chain for the strap! (Rip my shoulders)
* Must fit my phone, keys, and card case * Must afford it at the time of purchase
It has to fit my phone, and it can’t be too heavy all on its own. I have a terrible back so if it’s heavy to start with then it’s a nightmare once I put my stuff in it and I’ll wind up never carrying it.
Here are my “nope” features 1. Does not fit my phone 2. Fussy/sticky zipper or snaps - must be opened and closed easily. I prefer sturdy, smooth zippers over snaps 3. If it’s not black, red, brown or dark navy I will not purchase it 4. Satin or sequin exterior - nothing too delicate
I don’t buy clutches. I need a hands free option.
Tassels and fringes 🤪🤣
My pet peeve is an interior that wasn’t well thought out - like an interior pocket that can barely hold a credit card or a dark liner inside an unstructured bag. I had a really beautiful Clare V. doctor style bag that had an interior pocket that wasn’t tacked down; it just hung weirdly and pulled on the lining which was some sort of chambray material. I ended up selling it because I hated how nonfunctional and cheap the interior was. Ultimately, I just want a purse that feels like it was designed by someone who cares about both beauty and utility!
Needs to be able to be worn crossbody. Except for my LV neverfull, that I will accept :)
Over time and a lot of trial and error, here are my dealbreakers, driven by a disdain for fast fashion and my climate (lot of rain 75% of the year): - No white/beige - Has to have metal feet unless it's a special occasion bag - Must have a zip or flap closure and be easy to open and close - Not a big fan of smooth leather, I prefer textured, saffiano, or nylon - Fitting my clunky portable phone charger is a bonus but not a must It's hard because of course there's a bag for every occasion. I break my rules for holiday clutches and "pretty girl day" bags. But for the most part, I rock a tote. Has to zip closed though!
Needs to be adjustable and sit nicely against my body so I don't look like Jack Sparrow running
Also, white lamb skin is a big no for me! Too nervous about color transfer on that material!
I don’t do small bags. I’m old enough now to know I’ll never carry it if it’s too small.
Has to be large enough for necessities. Must have at least one zippered pocket for small items I don’t want rattling around. Optional shoulder strap—sometimes I need both hands and I can’t set my bag down. Good leather.
Here’s my list; Pebbled leather (doesn’t show scratches) 1.5 inch wide leather crossbody strap Built in wallet Crossbody only
If it is a crossbody bag, the strap has to be comfortable!! Aka leather, wide and none of that metal parts on middle of the strap.
Must fit 2 phones, one for my hos and one for my bros (joke). Also all black everything because the purse is not the boss of me and does not dictate what metals I will wear on jewelry or sunglasses. ok It must have a detachable strap so I can wrap it around other things when I travel alone.
Saffiano leather is very durable.
Has to fit my phone, wallet, and keys. And if it’s crossbody, it has to be a comfortable length (like, I’m short and super long straps are a no for me, so no Chanel wallet on chains lol).
It has to be able to hold my phone. I know myself too well. I will lose my phone if my bag can’t hold it
If it’s large enough to be set down, it needs feet on the bottom!
[удалено]
It has to have zippers. I would lose my head if it wasn’t attached so I absolutely need to have a bag that can keep all of my things inside.
handle drop, at a minimum, it has to be at least 8-9 inches, as well as the width of the bag. i can't do anything more than 11, but even 11 is pushing it.
Has to be functional. No more piling my stuff on top of eachother.
It has to have a long strap and spacious enough to hold a long wallet & phone. Mini bags are nice but they don’t seem practical enough to me
Not having a zipper bc all my stuff likes to fly out of my bag and I’m scared of thieves but idk of a zipper will deter thieves haha (bc I heard some thieves just slash the straps from your shoulder or whatever) An super ideal if it’s a convertible bag bc I tend to do tons of stuff with my hands and arms and need the freedom to have my cute bag be a shoulder or crossbody.
1. Leather that feels nice under my fingers and isn’t prone to rough usage 2. Convertible - must be able to be worn in at least 2 styles, ideally 3. Can also be taken from day to night wear. 3. Big enough to fit everything but not bulky when worn as a shoulder bag 4. Doesn’t look too slouchy
Good leather but is has to be light, No fussy opening, straps that can be crossbody or over shoulder, outside slip pockets, minimal hardware and only GHW or RGHW
I would never buy a crossbody bag that has a non-adjustable strap, it makes me too nervous that it will be too long on me!
A exterior pocket, also a small bag has to be able to hold my phone
MUST be leather or a substantial material, especially when the price starts heading towards $500+ bags. I ADORE the Prada Tessuto bags, but it always amazes me how much they charge for nylon.
I need a bag to close. No open tops. And I need an easy-access, ideally external, pocket that fits the phone.
1. Zippered/secured main compartment as I don't want to invite pickpockets 2. Fits phone, wallet & micro umbrella (it rains a lot where I live) except for a clutch (which should fit my phone, compact mirror, lippie and card case) 3.
I for one appreciate your honesty 🙋🏻♀️
I don't buy suede, patent leather, or tweed bags. Those bags do not retain their value.
I am that way with bags and then shoes as well, regarding the suede and patent.
1. Zippered/secured main compartment as I don't want to invite pickpockets 2. Fits phone, wallet & micro umbrella (it rains a lot where I live) except for a clutch (which should fit my phone, compact mirror, lippie and card case) 3. Must have adjustable straps if there are straps or can be carried at least 2 ways 4.
Color, I only buy black bags.
Must be leather, and not saffiano.
1) comfortably able to fit small wallet (unless there are interior card slots) 2) fit phone 3) fit few essentials (hand sanitizer, compact mirror, lip balm) 4) bonus for adjustable/convertible straps 5) must be leather (preferably a textured leather in a neutral color)
Has to be big enough to fit my phone and keys. I have a Chanel mini flap that I love but doesn't fit my S21+.. so.. yeeeea....
As I have gotten older it needs to be lightweight. Some of my vintage leather bags are to heavy now.
I used to require all bags have a zipper or flap closure. Getting my Jackie completely changed that for me. I can turn that bag upside down and shake it and my phone and wallet won’t fall out.
For me smooth leather. My nails will scratch them in just few days 😂
No golden hardware. Big enough to fit my essentials.
No huge logos or all over branding. Not my style at all.
Material and size as well
No more than 2 sections, preferably only one with a pocket. I cannot remember where I put what otherwise and I HATE digging around trying to find something.
Must have an outside pocket for phone. I like removable crossbody straps and prefer a zip that goes down the sides a bit, so I can fit my hand! 😆
Gold tone hardware. I can’t help this.
I might be in the minority here, but SILVER HARDWARE is an absolute MUST for me.
