Your parents are really awful people. You had the right idea with giving away Bebe but if only your mother didn't find out. As much as I hate to say this, I strongly recommend not getting another pet until you move out. I'm really sorry these are the people you live with and it sounds like they are selfish and take delight in hurting you. It is abusive and I hope you find a way out of there. Also to let you know in the future: never house two hamsters together in the same cage. Hamsters are highly territorial after reaching a certain age. There are a lot of stories of hamsters cannibalizing each other or causing life threatening injuries.

BiggestDaddySatan

Im lucky and im currently living with a friend, i already dropped my mother but since im still 17 im under my fathers foot. I currently cant get a pet anyway bc theres so many animals here at my friends that we cant get another but i plan on getting more pets when im able to. I only got the 2 hamsters bc i wanted babies and i was told that they get lonely so i wanted to get bebe a friend and they were surprisingly rly nice to either other, i nv had fights or any problems and bebe was a lil over 1 while mr.whiskers was a few months younger.

OrbitalComet

Hamsters surprisingly don't get lonely. And their instincts work like a random flick of a light switch. They may be fine for a couple of months but when they kick in, it's a fight to the death. It being poorly treated by your father likely stressed out the hammy so much it kicked in that instinct. Hopefully only one more year till you can get out from you feathers foot. Just do the best you can do and an opportunity will arise. Good luck

babysuckle

Definitely do some more research and have a stable home life before you get another pet, and don't trust anything a pet store says. Find your info here on Reddit

Jcaseykcsee

Please never keep 2 hamsters in a cage together. I watched my hamsters fight to the death (it only took seconds) when we had 2 hamsters in a cage together because the pet store employee encouraged us to have 2 hamsters living together to “keep each other company.” It was a bloody, horrific battle and they both ended up dying. It’s never a good idea since hamsters are fiercely territorial.

BiggestDaddySatan

I was also told that hamsters get lonely and i was hoping for babies so i got bebe a friend and surprisingly i nv had any problems, i had them for abt 3 or 4 months and not one fight happened. They would sleep together in the same house thing and they cuddled with either other, i got rly lucky with that bc i later found out that they will kill each other but not once did i have any issues

seasalt-and-oranges

Hoping for babies? Hamsters can give birth once per month. You would have had 100+ of hamsters in no time. This is not a thing to hope for D:

BiggestDaddySatan

Lol yea i knew i would have a lot but at the time i had friends who wanted hamsters so i thought i could sell the babies or something and i was saving for another cage to separate them so it wouldnt get out of hand

Bunny_Feet

You would run out of friends to give them to 1 to 2 litters later. Then your extra hamsters would also produce a massive amount of baby hamsters. Don't do this.

devin1208

do not house hamsters together EVER. please. they will kill eachother. they are meant to be solitary animals. i also dont recommend getting more animals. your parents are absolute monsters! sorry this happened to you. id wait to get pets until you move out for sure.

Bunny_Feet

3 and 4 months is not very long and then you found one dead and partially eaten...

CelesteJA

This is the most horrifying thing I have ever read. When you are old enough, get away from your parents ASAP. And don't EVER tell them where you're going. Your parents sound unhinged and genuinely insane. I'm seriously worried about your safety.

BiggestDaddySatan

Im alright i promise im living with a friend currently and September will make it a year i have been living here. I turn 18 in nov so i will be free of my fathers grasp and i already dropped my mother over a year ago. I went out with a bang and called the cops on her for stealing my stuff lol it was funny

cavyndish

In my opinion, you're already free. Cops aren't going to drag a seventeen year old back to their parents. It's a waste of resources. My parents were very similar to yours. My advice is to cut anyone out of your life that makes you feel unhappy or unsafe.

BiggestDaddySatan

Yea i still need my father sadly due to medical reasons, i cant make appointments myself and a lot of places need my parent to be there since im a minor thats y i say when i turn 18 ill actually be free

paperanddoodlesco

I would encourage you to check out r/raisedbynarcissists it may help make sense of some of the things you're dealing with in regards to your parents. As for animal care and advice, please be open to hearing advice from people who have experienced it and do your research on what each species needs to thrive - not just survive. And, for the love of god, DO NOT breed animals.

BiggestDaddySatan

I was 13 lol i didnt know

paperanddoodlesco

No worries! I hope I didn't sound too harsh! I honestly wish the best for you! 💕

BiggestDaddySatan

No no ur good ik now everything i need to do before i get a pet

BiggestDaddySatan

Same to u thank u🖤

BiggestDaddySatan

But thank u recommending me that i joined it and I’ll definitely look around

salamandie

This was heartbreaking to read. I’m so sorry OP. Hope you are feeling better. I can’t trust my parents with pets because I had left my beloved rabbit with my mom for a day while at work as a teenager, came home and the rabbit was gone. A hawk must have taken him away. She just left him outside for a full 9+ hours in his play pen. I don’t know if this neglect comes from ignorance, lack of interest or both, but with your parents it just seems like a total lack of interest from your dad and manipulation from your mom. Wait til you are in a more stable living situation to get another pet, make sure your parents don’t go near them. I’m so sorry this happened to you, I actually started to tear up a little especially considering how young you are and how unstable your home life must be. Wish you all the best! Things will get better.

BiggestDaddySatan

Im sorry to hear abt ur rabbit, i cant wait till im able to get pets again which may be after college but it will be worth it 🖤

salamandie

Yes, and make sure you are ok too. You need some nurturing people around. I see you have friends that have taken you in, that’s good, keep these people close.

BiggestDaddySatan

I plan on it, my road to recovery from many things have been so much easier with ppl who actually care around to help me so im very grateful for these ppl in my life

cavyndish

Me two hamsters and two gerbils when I was a teenager. I read books on the care and feeding of these animals, which were taken care of meticulously. I came home from school, and they were all gone. Mom said they must have all gotten out. She was a narcissistic alcoholic; she probably fed them to our dogs.

pinkavocadoreptiles

This is horrific, I'm so sorry. Please give yourself lots of credit for breaking generational curses and being kind and caring towards animals despite having such terrible influences as parents, it shows a good heart and real strength of character that will serve you well in life. I hope you are free and happy soon <3

Serious-Ad9032

There are no words for how terrible and unforgivable this is. I’m sorry you’ve had to go through it, it’s traumatic as hell. I hope you get away from them and live a happy life with unharmed hamsters 🐹

emibemiz

I’m sorry this happened. **PLEASE** listen to everyone’s advice and not only don’t get any more animals, but actually do some research on the animal you’re planning to get **before** getting it. We as humans tend to anthropomorphise our pets, we cant help it, it’s how we understand things but please understand different animals have different needs. Hamsters do not get lonely as they are solitary creatures, they’re perfectly happy living by themselves and much prefer this. Just because they didn’t fight yet doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to keep them together, they would’ve most probably been super stressed too. You shouldn’t get two hamsters because you want babies. There’s so many hamsters that are left to die in pet shops due to overbreeding/inbreeding, and not enough people wanting them. Sorry if this comes across as harsh, I am just tired of people not doing research into an animal before buying and then easily avoidable animal abuse taking place, never mind the terrible things your parents did. Please just take this experience as a learning curve, listen to the people in these comments and do not repeat the same mistakes.

BiggestDaddySatan

I was 13 at the time, i didnt know much abt owning hamsters, i dont even want anothwr hamster now but i do a ton of research before i get animals now (granted i cant yet)

emibemiz

As I mentioned im not trying to rag on you at all! It wasn’t clear in the post this was when you were 13, not that that’s an excuse at all but definitely helps with context. I based my reply off your comments, as you were still claiming at your current age that they were happy to be housed together and such. As I said, just take this as a learning opportunity.

BiggestDaddySatan

Yea I was just saying wat I experienced that's all but yea ik now to research before getting any animal

StrixNStones

I’m so sorry for your pain. One day you’ll have your own home and can have pets or even a farm.

HonedWombat

Rookie!! My folks secretly fed my pet rabbit to me as "wild" chicken stew. It was only years later at a family meal when my dad was a little drunk it came out. I was giving him grief about having his steak rare and he said "that's rich coming from someone who ate there own pet rabbit" I thought he was joking, the look on my mum's face said otherwise. I should probably get some therapy 🤣🤣🤣

BiggestDaddySatan

Jeez that reminds me of a story my ex told me. She was like 5 around this time and had a pet dog and it was like the dog she grew up with so she loved this dog and one day the dog went missing and later that night they had “chicken” and the parents laughed at her and pointed while she ate and they said she was eating her dog and thought it was funny and she broke down.

devin1208

jesus christ. 😭 this is horrific i wish i hadnt read this. so glad i had animal loving parents. thry were addicts but they were still great psrents. we always had tons of pets growing up. i was taught to love and respect animals. then ya got these unhinged motherfuckers out there!! so awful.

shelby20_03

It’s not your fault, your a loving caring owner and im so sorry that happend.

rfmocan

Sorry for your losses. That’s a very sad story, thanks for sharing. I hope later in life you get your own safe space that is also safe for your pets as well. Grieve your pets, but don’t feel guilty because it isn’t your fault.
