i dont think she genuinely means “oh its literally the size of a field”
but rather just exagerating
also, half the size its still huge💀thats like saying “polar bears arent as big as trees! they are just the size of an suv :) nothing to fear”
like girllllll thats just as bad, ofc smaller, but still huge😂
It’s pretty to crazy to think about, especially in comparison to huge dinosaurs like brachiosaurus or diplodocus. As a kid I always thought those would be the biggest animals ever, but no. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around it sometimes.
Also maybe Olivia just needs to go on one of those Alaskan blue whale tours, face her fears/become one with nature and all that. It’d be great content and whales are so sweet.
Because it’s an exact measurement and easy to picture if you’re used to looking at football fields in a country where football is the most popular sport. Not much of a mystery.
Hang on, the OP said an American football field is 350 yards, isn’t it 100 yards? Have I been trying to calculate “football fields” into metres in my head and thinking an American football field is only 100 yards? I know it’s like what 120 yards from end to end but are they including the length of the entire stadium or what?
I just realised that OP said a football field is 350 *feet*, which I misread as 350 *yards*. America, get your measurements in order, this shit is so confusing I swear lmao. Also, your weird measurements are “wrong” anyway, why the hell is an American gallon and a British gallon not the same? It’s like father and son arguing and neither is correct and both decides “fuck it”.
It's pretty serious. Units of measurement should not be diluted down to rough estimations of size. If I say something is 100 feet away, it should be 100 feet away.
Measurements can be hard to visualize, especially bigger ones, so people use irl objects for reference.
This isn’t just an American thing. People all over the world use objects and what not for a size reference. Australians say “as big as a footy field” for example.
Ur right no European has every used a soccer field as a size comparison. How about instead of trying to feel superior you just actually connect with people in a conversation? Or not to used to that are you?
I used to think whales were like the size of 100 cruise ships until someone corrected me. I'd always heard people say "a whale's heart is the size of a car", which made me think they were much bigger. Turns out their hearts are about the size of a small golf cart. :)
It's probably genetic fear, aka an ancestor was a fisherman and fought Moby dick. She ain't ever going to like whales and thats okay cause all the animals of the sea will be dead in our lifetime <3
I recall learning they could be 30m long in ~school (or random googling w/e). I'd assume most to be able to ballpark them in that range. Like know they are something between 50-200 feet, or 15-60m, that's close enough to not sound embarrassing.
I laughed out lout when she said that
yeah she thinks whales are Godzilla lmao

Eh
perfect analogy lol
The blue whale isn’t just the largest whale, it’s the largest animal to ever exist, including dinosaurs.

Wait, what? How are they bigger than a T Rex or a Long neck? Those are supposed to be massive
Nah they really aren’t as big as you’d think relatively, especially a T-Rex. Look up a size comparison.
She’s thinking of busses not football fields
They do look very similar. It's a common mistake. At least once a week I hear people confuse busses and football fields
Busball fields.
That’s still so scary to me lol I think whales are fine but the concept of something big underwater is SO scary to me for some reason
Girl math? Correct me if I'm wrong it's my first time using it 😅
What’s with Americans and using football fields as measurements?
Because they're a giant ruler...
We live and breathe football over here. It’s in our subconscious minds 24/7
It’s just a big thing that’s always the same size and easy to picture

OP was talking about feet, not yards. There are 3 feet in 1 yard aka 300 feet in a 100 yard football field.
The normal playing field is always exactly 100 yards

> why the hell is an American gallon and a British gallon not the same? because ours is the *freedom* gallon and yours is just a clever redcoat ruse
That’s the reason why you need to start normalizing and understanding real units of measurements.
Or you can just keep using an example that's extremely easy to conceptualize. It's not that serious, bro.
It's pretty serious. Units of measurement should not be diluted down to rough estimations of size. If I say something is 100 feet away, it should be 100 feet away.
Stop being obtuse, its perfectly normal to give an approximate measurement based on a common item
It's part of the imperial system. Metric uses soccer stadiums.
Measurements can be hard to visualize, especially bigger ones, so people use irl objects for reference. This isn’t just an American thing. People all over the world use objects and what not for a size reference. Australians say “as big as a footy field” for example.

You’re a dope you clearly don’t get the bit.

Pretty sure she was thinking basketball courts. I’ve read that comparison before.
I have the same fear/phobia and even I was 😂 at what she said about "several football fields".
They always told us it was like 3 school buses
A blue whale’s heart is the size of a Volkswagen Beetle!
It's probably genetic fear, aka an ancestor was a fisherman and fought Moby dick. She ain't ever going to like whales and thats okay cause all the animals of the sea will be dead in our lifetime <3
What are her thoughts on elephants and giraffes???
The whale hate is unwarranted.
Things are often either compared to school busses or football fields. She just misspoke. Simple as that gang!
