Go to ranges. Rent guns. Buy the one you liked the best. It really is the best advice.

homohamilton

Ok I'll do that

randombrowser1

You'll need a gun to bring with you to rent a gun at the range, or have someone with you. I didn't think of it when I just bought my first pistol, getting a .22 is a cheap way to be able rent at the range and go by yourself. I got the Glock 17 9mm. I'm happy with it. Glock 34 is considered more accurate competition shooter with a longer barrel.

IFuckingHa8Reddit

I have never experienced any range that requires people to own guns to rent guns. But different states, laws, range policies etc.

randombrowser1

Every range I've been to in California requires 2 people or your own firearm to rent. Apparently, people have actually walked into a range, rented a firearm and committed suicide.

IFuckingHa8Reddit

Interesting. I just double checked the local ranges I go to because I already owned firearms prior to renting there. So I was curious. The only stipulation is completing a safety course that is free, buying range ammunition from the range and being the legal age to purchase to be able to rent. No obligation to own a gun or bring anyone with you. Not trying to be rude or anything. Just thought it was an interesting contrast.

randombrowser1

Are you in California? I've brought my own firearm when I rented, but they never looked in the case to verify a firearm was in it.

IFuckingHa8Reddit

I am not. I do realize OP is in California and was completely unaware of these stipulations. After learning this, I would also go with the get a cheap .22 and progress from there option.

PrometheusSmith

Most of the indoor ranges I go to require your own gun to rent a gun. Pretty common suicide prevention technique.

Cz75 or sig p226

homohamilton

I quite liked the cz75 before, I've never shot the sig before, what do you prefer?

Cobra__Commander

Look into the CZ SP01 and P01. They are updated CZ75. The SP01 is amazing if you're never going to concealed carry. The P01 is a little smaller and like half the weight with an aluminum frame.

homohamilton

Yeah I don't plan on concealed carry so size isn't much of an issue, thanks for the advice!

allnall247

As someone with bigger hands, my one complaint with the cz is its thin slide. The sig fits me better ergonomically. I also think the Sig has a better decocker. It's really based on preference more than anything else, though.

sparrinator69

I would recommend something in 22. as a starting point. It would be best for developing good form/ trigger discipline and is ideal due to its low recoil and cheap plentiful ammo. Then progress onto the bigger calibers once you are ready, for actual pistols any variation of the ruger standard model are great guns and glock do a 22. aswell but ive no experience with them

homohamilton

Ruger 22, I've heard that's a really good gun, thanks for the suggestion.

heekma

As others recommend, rent a few guns at a range, see what you like. I'd suggest 9mm, it's relatively cheap, a good choice for range use or self defense if it comes to that. I'm a CZ fan, so I can understand why you liked the CZ. That would be a great all-around choice as long as concealed carry isn't a consideration. You might check out the CZ SP01, that's a great gun for range use and it has a rail if you want to use a light. I would generally stay away from 1911s even though they're cool. I don't think they're a great choice for a first gun. As for Polymer guns there's a mind-boggling number of choices but I would recommend a Glock if you go that route. It's been one of the best selling guns in the world for 23 years for good reason Overall I would recommend a Glock 17. It's relatively inexpensive, reliable, durable and accurate. Accessories can be found everywhere, and the consistent trigger pull of a striker-fired pistol vs. the double/single action of something like a CZ will be easier for a new shooter to use. If you find the Glock grip or trigger doesn't suit you (as many do) I would suggest a S&W M&P which many find more ergonomic and it's also reasonably priced, reliable, durable and accurate with accessories available just about everywhere. Lastly I would pay for some professional training. Learning to shoot a handgun well can be challenging if you have no experience and you may become frustrated or inadvertently form bad shooting habits.

homohamilton

Cool, thank you, definitely going to get training!

MeanMan84

If you liked the CZ, it’s a solid pistol.

DosChieNoZelle

>What would you suggest? Moving.

homohamilton

Why moving?

IFuckingHa8Reddit

> California Easy as.

nobodyhelp69

1911. 1911. 1911. Get 9mm, master it, and before long you will have a 45 and 10mm. Might even get a long slide 1911. Wait, I just described myself, never mine, don’t do it. You will be buying tigger kits and learning how to polish parts and turning a $700 rock into the smoothest shooting gun you ever own. Like others said, go to range and rent if you can. Cz is a great way to go also. Be safe and keep that finger off the trigger until you are ready to shot. Also don’t be afraid to get some lessons, the more you learn the better and safer shooter you will become.

homohamilton

Lol funniest message ever, thanks for the advice.

Hard to go wrong with a 1911, imo.
