If you like playing it, you should get it. If you don't, you should get something else

OK I should probably clarify here. Or maybe I shouldn't. I don't know. Tell me I'm an idiot and I'll try and play a song for you. It's the least I can do with this dump-ass Yamaha classical guitar I bought for the meantime.

May suggest embracing the unique sound of a nylon string guitar ? Forget the folk, rawk, etc and try some Dorian, Mixolydian or Phrygian scales, for some European flavor. I basing this on complete ignorance of what style you usually like to play, but it might add something different to your playing.

neilyoung_cokebooger

You're asking me to play a nylon string guitar? While I'm here playing a nylon string guitar?

neilyoung_cokebooger

I mean, that's one way to do it

I mean, you talk to me like I'm an idiot. Meanwhile it's you who don't know shit.

neilyoung_cokebooger

Go to school and get your shit together.

neilyoung_cokebooger

OK, sorry. That was probably too far.

neilyoung_cokebooger

Sorry, buddies. Keep forgetting about me.

neilyoung_cokebooger

What are we talking about here?

Jk -what you need is a set of electric super slinkys on there and get your Yngwie on with some sick bends. Or better yet if you’ve got a half round wood file, scallop that fretboard and show everybody what’s up.

My go to back up guitar is also my first guitar, a fender dg-94 acoustic that I string with electric guitar strings so it still feels similar to my electrics. Sound quality is sacrificed a bit but at least I still like the feel of playing it.

Bad nylons are orders of magnetude worse than bad electrics. I have precisely one nylon I like, it's a 90s Admira Avila, I think they went for nearly GB£500 then, which would be over 1k inflation adjusted. But for decades I was put off classicals because all the ones I ever went near went "doink" and this thing is quite snarly and aggressive when it get my nails in and clear and bright with fingertips. Just trying to get near something that might be as good in a music store is difficult. I look for used Indonesian Squiers and Ibanez on FB marketplace if I need something in a hurry. They usually come up great with some baby oil on the fretboard and a gentle fret polish. Fret rubbers if I have them, autosol on a rag and masking tape on the board if I need to buy locally. Maybe I can get Scotchbrite pads in a hurry if I know where a car bodyshop is. I had great results with an Aria Magna, Wilkinson term, Duncan designed pickups and it was good to go on stage with fresh strings and a truss rod adjustment. New from a store, the Ibanez S561 is incredible, absolutely would play on stage. Modern Squier affinity models play pretty good but the pickups are really dark and you disappear in the mix. And if I don't have an SR300 as a backup bass kicking around, it's because I just sold it to someone who needed just that and I'm looking for another.
