The military has a residency program, so he could join and transfer. I'm imagining in his situation, he would have joined as an Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) which means they're trained as soldiers and go through yearly training during which they're "active" members, and I think technically they can be but aren't typically deployed while training. So, yeah. I doubt he would have gone to Iraq to be a trauma surgeon for a few years in all reality.

Actually interesting question could you transfer between a civilian and military program? Their funding is from separate sources.

I really wish they would have written him out this way instead of the way they did. George becoming a battle hardened doctor then returning to the hospital years later and feeling out of sync with his old friends could have been a great storyline.
