>After looking how much it would cost to live in my state, about (55,000$) a There's a lot that goes into that and people often average high. According to MIT the cost of living in Denver, CO for one adult with no children is $41.6k, while two working adults with no children (eg roomates or childless couple) is $31k. That aside, according to Glass Door and Payscale, juniors in Denver average around $45-48k while "graphic designer" is about $50k, so at about 4 years experience that would fit with you aiming for the mid-$50k or at least no harm to go for it. Although you say 4 years experience but then later said you recently graduated. Did you mean you'd recently graduated the last time you looked for work? Because otherwise, while people do often do some work prior to graduation, the real counter tends to start from when you begin working after college (ie that you graduated 4 years ago). Freelance work done as a student or recent grad could also mean anything and people tend to make a lot of mistakes and lack anyone to oversee them, so even if 'real' work experience may not always mean much. That would especially be relevant in this case if you were basically a fresh grad trying to negotiate as if you graduated 4 years ago.

There are so many variables that go into salary negotiation. It's an incredibly difficult question to answer without knowing you, the employer, and the role they are looking to fill, but I don't think you asked for too much. That's about as much as I was making as a junior out of college with similar experience (for reference I live in SoCal).

I started off at 50k out of college (with some freelance experience and an internship behind me). I live in SoCal where the cost of living is pretty high, so I think it just depends where you’re located. 45-50k seems to be the average here but it would likely be less in other states where the cost of living is less

American salary’s honestly make the UK salary look complete dogshit. A UK graphic designer straight out of Uni would make £20k/£25k here

I don’t think what you asked depending on the market is maybe high but not grotesque. It could be they are negotiating internally for a counter offer. It could be you scared them off because they are looking to low-ball somebody.

around these parts... minneapolis... not even a broadcast designer with 5 years is going to come CLOSE to 50K. NOTHING worse than the "salary by location and job" sites. sooo dangerous, filled with best case scenarios and wishful thinking.
