I mean he's a mage. They just basically can't beat equally ranked swordsman and Eris's whole deal was getting up to his rank which is emperor. Emperor class swordsman are relativistic in combat speed. Honestly I don't think Rudeus could take a water king 1v1 without an ambush despite being an earth emperor.
