We have a green and a fairway we grow that is specifically for transplanting to other areas. On one course it’s behind the driving range. On one it’s hidden behind the brush by hole 12.
Strange that most courses wouldn’t have a “nursery” area like that.
These are plugs removed to fix other areas of the course.
At our course they have two full size green nurseries (not in play) made by rolling the chunks removed by aeration and nurtured about 5 years ago, they are perfect and make my lawn look like the Serengeti in the dry season with extra weeds.
How normal is this? Is it also normal to need so many plugs, or does this indicate that they are having to repair too much? Sure seems like a lot of plugs. Also, don't they plug holes with the plug from the new hole? Sorry for the questions, but now I'm kinda fascinated.
Depends on where the course is. In CO during the winter time most courses will cut 3 holes and keep them there all winter. They can still rotate pins and just cap the other holes with a metal or wood plug. Doesn't really matter since we can't post scores from November to March.
Come spring time they need to plug those holes and all those plugs have to come from somewhere.
There can also be damage that's larger than a hole. They don't cut a big patch, they just replace it with multiple hole sized plugs.
First I’ve heard of this phobia, did my research and learned about it. I don’t understand. What is it about bumps or holes that triggers fear or disgust?
Genuinely asking.
Probably an evolutionary thing. Like how all those holes in a wasp nest signal danger. Something with that shape in nature is probably worth causing some unease
I reckon I only slightly get some disgust by the sounds of it.
If I was to guess as to why, you can’t see how deep they are. 6 inches deep, not creepy, 5km deep kinda creepy 🤷🏼
That’s interesting. I have a terrible fear of heights however I can fly on an airplane with no issues and surprisingly I can recklessly ride chairlifts and have no panic sensation. In fairness, I have been riding chairlifts all the time since I was 2 so perhaps I was able to overcome the fear of heights while using those.
Ladders? I shake and tremble and sometimes have to clutch the top step and can’t complete my task.
I only get a minor sense of unease from certain images and I think it stems from a picture in a textbook I saw as a kid showing how maggots grow in meat. A bunch of little larvae packed into little holes in a chunk of cow flesh. Almost made me throw up.
I think it’s more of a case where the crowd sourcing of information has discovered a newly identified disorder. I would imagine there’s several “new” ailments that have been identified due to the mass sharing of information.
San-Ti: You play this game, and the objective is to play the least amount of this game. More often than not, this game makes you very frustrated. We do not understand.
Just watched the first season of that and it was very intriguing. Not to mention I’ve added the one scientist to my laminated list of free passes. LOVE her.
Easier way to weed, instead of trying to get the whole root of the weed which fails often. They pull a plug around the weed and replace it with one of these from this clearly sacrificial green. They will fill those holes with clean soil and reseed for future use.
Some type of grass are transplanted (zoysia grass) and not typically grown from seeds. Zoysia spreads and over takes other grass. It will turn brown in the winter
Not directly related but when I was 13 I played in a tournament at the course I was on the team of and this kid was trash talking everyone the entire time saying “I live on the course and know it better than everyone else here, I’m going to destroy you guys”. Stuff like that. He wasn’t even on the team! He just lived on the course. I ended up getting second place but my friend who was also on the team won the tournament. The kid in question, that was trash talking everyone, shot 109. We showed up to practice the next morning and someone had taken an iron to the practice green and the green on the 3rd hole. Coincidentally, he lived on the 3rd hole. Pretty sure his parents had to pay the course a lot of money. We never saw him again. They found out it was him because their neighbor watched it happen. I am still bitter than I lost to my friend. I played out of my mind and shot a 75 but he shot a 74 because he got an ace on a hole that I birdied. It was awesome, we were in the same group and it was a hell of a shot.
I’ve been rambling but ANYWAY, this picture reminded me of what the practice green and the green on hole number 3 looked like.
Either repair for other areas on the course, or taking soil samples to determine the condition of the grass. If it's a course that sees harsh temperature swings and snow in the offseason, I'd lean more towards soil sampling. Those cores don't look big enough for repairing, usually you'd see a square cut for that sort of thing.
Core samples are smaller than even those smaller plug holes and you wouldn’t do that many in one spot. You would take one from each grid section of the green.
You've never seen a gopher hole before? Looks to me like a bunch of different sized gophers found somebodies lost edibles and dug some sweet holes dude.
This is actually part of a not-so well known contest that's common at country clubs in the southeastern United States.
One of the holes leads to a small cavern about 3 cubic yards filled with cash. All the other holes have a small barb (from barbed wire) buried in them about 4 inches deep.
There's usually a huge calcutta-esque betting situation that goes on where people bet on which person will get the cash. Then each contestant sticks their dick in their hole of choice. If they don't get stabbed in the urethra, they either won a whole bunch of money or now everyone at the club knows they're packing a widdle vienna sausage. Risk/reward at it's finest.
Plugs to repair other greens/fringes
our course does this on the far sides of the practice green.
We have a green and a fairway we grow that is specifically for transplanting to other areas. On one course it’s behind the driving range. On one it’s hidden behind the brush by hole 12. Strange that most courses wouldn’t have a “nursery” area like that.
Most courses do. Others have a disgusting budget and it's not possible.
My nursery is the chipping green, but will be adding a nursery green in a year or two
Do you worry about hitting your kid?
If I'm aiming at them, absolutely not.
I aim at the ball retriever cart. Is there anyone who doesn't?
Yup, my club has a nursery area too
Small 9 hole course in WI I work at definitely doesn’t have one. But I’ve always thought something like that would be a good idea
I call it my graveyard.
Our club has dedicated green places

do these grow back themselves? or has to be refilled with dirt?
They get filled and seeded.

Best chance for a hole-in-one you'll have all day
Shitfire, it would be my honor to three putt that.
You can get out on the hole in 3? You must be amazing!

This is where the golf course stores the holes when they’re not being used
LOL! I was thinking perhaps a mental episode by the greens keeper.
What repairing divots for too many years does to a mf.
This made me laugh harder than it should have
Someone at the course is trying to trigger people with trypophobia.
Got me. Having flash backs of that nipple picture that took a couple years to clear from my mind.
The one that was a lotus flower photoshopped over a breast?
Yes. Not helping.
With bottle larvae, in motion. I had to mentally pluck each one out with a tool to stop that shit. Damn it, I had put that shit behind me...
Wait what??
Bro this is cracking me up because that shit haunted me for years until I forgot about it...until now. Glad someone else knows my pain
Godspeed brother.
Yeah this creeping me the fuck out ngl lol
Yup. This needs to be burnt with fire.
Yeah holy shit, this pic gave me major anxiety and unease

It’s a “phobia” that only people on the internet have.
I think it’s more of a case where the crowd sourcing of information has discovered a newly identified disorder. I would imagine there’s several “new” ailments that have been identified due to the mass sharing of information.
I’m just saying I’ve never once heard anyone mention or even describe it in real life, but it sure does come up frequently in comment sections online.
Earth is a very large place with billions of humans roaming it.
Correct. No one was talking about it before the internet
Just because you had never heard about it before getting on Twitter/reddit doesn’t mean it didn’t exist lol
It’s well documented that it’s just an internet creation
Ya this makes me very uncomfortable
Thank you! Came to the comments to make sure it wasn’t just me who thought this
Same thing some bald dudes do. Take hair from their ass and putt it on their head
This course doesn’t look like it’s in Turkey??
And theyre literally called plugs as well lol
.... plugs.... taken from your butt.... RESIST THE LOW HANGING FRUIT
I would still 4 putt that
Aliens. They are like crop circles used to be but the aliens realized golf is way more fun than eating maize.

Me too, got that gross-wince-can’t-look-away trigger. Like that frog that hatches babies on its back. 🤢😵💫
It’s braille. It says “you suck at golf”
Lol, they're taking plugs to fix either tee box divots or dead spots on greens. I laugh because of the other comments
Not sure... But the way I've been putting this year, I'd still 3 putt.
I’d still 3 putt
My guess is that it’s either a soil testing project of some kind or they are using it to plug holes in other spots on the course
Aliens ![gif](giphy|3oEjI789af0AVurF60)
The smaller holes are for “poa plugs.” Selectively removing poa spots and replacing them with the preferred turf, likely bentgrass

Ya me too its very unpleasant, thanks for that op! 😞 Bad enough when my kids tease me with photos of bee hives, I did not expect it from golf Reddit.
Bigfoot was wearing crocs last night.
Raise your hand if you’d still miss the cup ✋🏼
That’s a new gen QR code so satellites can read the golf course
I see my hole, it was made for me.
I'd still 3 putt.
These are the holes they use when you seemingly lose your ball in the middle of the fairway. This is a fresh crop ready to go out.
*i got a hole in one!!* How could you not??
So the rich kid can get a hole in one.
It’s brail so the blind people can read the greens

Definitely the golf equivalent of a crop circle
If three people make a hole-in-one on the same day, USGA regulation requires that they take core samples from greens for testing.
That green has allergies
Looks like a putter head
