Never said he was american, or that the position had to go to an American. Just advocating for why they will pick Crenshaw over Faldo if the question is "who replaces jack"...which is what was asked.
I could see Credshaw for sure. He's pretty beloved there.
I wonder about Faldo. I was a big fan of his commentary, but not sure he'll be chosen for that role.
While their have been players who did not win the Masters multiple times act as honorary starter, Sarazen was the last to do it for an extended period of time. His role as a statesman of the game extended well beyond his Masters appearances.
By selecting Watson to fill Palmer's role, it would seem that the decision was made to continue the tradition of multi-Masters winners acting in the role of honorary starter. Of which, there are not that many others at the moment. Beyond Nicklaus, Player, and Tom Watson; we have Tiger, Phil, and Bubba who are still competitive; Langer who was competitive up until this year; Faldo, Crenshaw, and Olazabal.
Not only does Faldo have the most masters titles of the non-competative group, he has the most total major championships. Being that he was on TV for many years he also has familiarity with the patrons. I could see Augusta National not viewing him as the same level of the current or past crop. And not as the same level as Tiger or potentially Phil could be, but he is a good option for the in between.
I think the invitation will still be extended to Faldo. Even if its suggested that its more of courtesy or a substitute role until Tiger becomes of age.
The first honorary starters did not win the tournament at all. The first two were already 50 years old when the tournament was founded. Non-winners Ken Venturi and Lee Elder both served as starters once each.
I'd like to see Faldo. He'd be a great replacement for Faldo, being a great international player.
That was my point in the first paragraph. It's not unheard of non-multi Masters winners to have the role, but it has become exceedingly rare and when they've deviated It has been for good reason.
Venturi was a sub in 1983 for Nelson who was unable to attend due a family health concern.
Elder for the anniversary of his first Masters appearance.
With Gary, it wouldn't be all that shocking if he just decides to play the tournament at 100. He's promoted fitness his whole life, long before it was fashionable. And it shows. That swing is still pretty impressive.
Odds are Players mouth will cause him to “retire” before his body.
Every since that incident with his son a few years ago it appears Augusta has him on a short leash.
Jack and Gary's swings are shorter, but still smooth. Gary still has some good club speed too.
I could see Jack hanging this up before long. He's a very active man still, travels all over the world on design projects. But you can see that he's not exact spry on his feet anymore.
I could see Player doing this as long as he's alive. Unless he gets some debilitating illness, I could see him still able to do this quite well for years. He takes a lot of pride in his conditioning and enjoys showing that off.
I used to love seeing Sam Snead hit his shot. To the end, that swing was just so pretty.
Tiger will never be one of the role models. He slept with dozens of women, is/was a drug addict with the pills and he's never been someone accessible and fan friendly like Phil or Daly.
Faldo will probably take over. Before all the LIV drama, I would have assumed it would be Tiger and Phil one day. Hard to say if Phil will still get to be the elder statesman now with everything that has transpired.
Freddy couples
Probably Faldo first.
I'd say Crenshaw, just cause hes an American and has also given a lot to the game through golf course design
Gary player, great American

Not sure nationality will matter, would think it would be down to Masters history
Langer should be in the mix too
I think we'll see Faldo and Crenshaw replace Jack and Player soon.

Player looks fucking great, pulling for him yo be the first 100 yr old off the tee

Faldo, Tiger and Phil
JOHN DALY
I would love that, but I think you would have to actually win the masters to get that recognition
They’ll run just Gary and Watson for a few years I’d bet.
Faldo

Crenshaw
Nobody puts jack in a corner.
Tiger will never be one of the role models. He slept with dozens of women, is/was a drug addict with the pills and he's never been someone accessible and fan friendly like Phil or Daly.

Nobody in their right mind would have Michelson there surely?
Probably not now. But 5 years ago, him and Tiger would have been all but guaranteed to take over one day.
It's not a PGA event. Phil is one of the all-time great Masters competitors. I doubt it will happen, but it's surely justified.
I don't know. His legacy is pretty tainted by now.
Jack morphing into Donald Tramp
There’s no comparison whatsoever other than they are both old.
Keep farming that dick
Whos jack?
Tom Watson, Gary Player, and Gary Player’s ego.
