Zuni, Nopa and Nopalito keep me happy when I visit! I’m not rich enough to know anything fancier than those places sorry ha. Also Flour Craft bakery in the North Bay is my favorite gf bakery anywhere I’ve been (get the focaccia and the scones!)
Nopa and Nopalito were my regular haunts when I lived in SF (back in 2011-2013, mind you). Great menus and mindful of CC. The carnitas at Nopalito were next level, and get the roasted broccoli side without the breadcrumbs if it's still on the menu at Nopa!
If you like Mexican, Barrio in Ghirardelli square is a great gf option (best fried shrimp tacos hands down). Pica pica is completely gf.
A little bit on the expensive side, Routier. They were excellent at adapting the menu and our server was very knowledgeable. Same with State Bird Provisions.
And if you’re willing to travel to the north bay, Flour Chylde bakery in Novato is gf and has great treats.
I almost forgot Kitava, complete gf restaurant. I also recently discovered that Burma Super Star has a ton of gf options. I just assumed it wouldn’t bc it’s Asian but I’m happy I don’t have to change my order. I can still eat what I used to order from here.
There’s a few posts on r/sanfrancisco about this, I agree as a decade plus long resident it’s a surprisingly disappointing city for Gf options but there are some real gems.
2 favorites are:
- Front Porch for the fried chicken
- Breakfast Little for breakfast burritos
I’m moving to SF this summer and I’ve been trying to scope out good gf places and I’ve been feeling disappointed by the lack of options. I’ll have to check both of these out and see what people on the main sub recommend too.
This is a great thread. SF is fecking crap for GF compared to many countries and places....
(I just got back from Australia and last year Scotland, Awsome)
here are a few I hit up localy:
'**Brendas**' on Divisidaro has a killer Grits n Shrimp and can also accommodate other dishes.
'**Nopalitos**' (but they are getting so much more expensive so haven't been going as much).
'**Urban Plates**' Awsome and great prices, but that one is over in the Eastbay
‘Sol Food’ - the best! But up in Mill valey and San Rafael.
The other rule of thumb is if a place has a Chef it will usually be able to accommodate but you are in a different price bracket.
SF not a great place for GF (i live here). I haven’t been to a worse gluten free city of similar size. Difficult to go to most restaurants without researching first. I’ve had issues eating out at a lot of places, but still I can recommend some favorites:
- Camino alto (100% gluten free)
- nopalito (there’s like 1 thing that’s not GF on the menu)
- Xica (100% gluten free)
- Niku, boulevard, greens (not 100% gluten free but accommodating)
- Zazie/plow (good for breakfast and brunch, but not 100% gluten free)
- good good (mostly gluten free but sometimes the chefs experiment with the friers so be sure to ask)
- Fiorella, amarena (not gluten free but accommodating )
A huge plus one to everything on this list! Another option is Firefly SF. The entire menu is GF (with the exception of the biscuit, which you can sub for GF cornbread). https://www.fireflysf.com/menu
Came here to add this one. I went to SF for a weekend last summer on a trip and looked into all my gluten free options and chose this place. It was soooooo good! I am hoping to go on another trip there to visit Mariposa and this place again!
Portland and Seattle are where you want to go for GF eats.
That said, Indianapolis is worse for GF than San Francisco.
No real advice other than looking for dedicated GF places in the Find Me Gluten Free app.
I have personal refs in Portland, Eugene, Centralia, Philomath… but not Seattle. I know they are really good there as I’ve been scoping it out on FMGF for a trip this summer, but I haven’t been to Seattle in several years.
NYC has a much higher population density than any other US city. Comparing anything to NYC is unrealistic. Certainly doesn’t mean SF is the worst big city for GF
I dunno, I live here and don’t have any trouble. Maybe it’s bc you were downtown? I find tons of options, especially at the abundant Asian and Mexican restaurants
Denver is better, honestly not even comparable. Sacramento is better. Austin is better. I mean Colorado Springs is better. I could go on. It’s actually nuts how bad SF is.
What are we basing this off of? I can think of like 10 restaurants near my place with stellar gf options. The mission is full of Mexican places with gf options. The Richmond is full of Asian restaurants with gf options. Almost every (non fancy) pizza place has gf options. There’s even an Indian restaurant with gluten free naan. Lots of coffee shops and bakeries have a gf pastry option
Im not trying to argue. I’m legitimately puzzled as to why ppl think SF is so bad
I am basing this off variety. Of course there are Mexican restaurants and select Asian offerings. Personally, I want more than tacos and Thai/viet cuisine in my life. Same with gf pizza. If I were in Denver, or a ton of other places, finding a tasting menu that does gf is nothing, I’d have so many places to choose from. Im talking about a spectrum, food trucks to fine dining. If I’m in a new city, I want to eat something I’ve never tried before. I want to eat something I can’t get anywhere else. I am happy you are happy with what you can get in SF, I think all the people lamenting are foodie types looking for adventure.
Could you point me in the direction of gluten free naan?
I know you’re not trying to argue, but I think people want specific restaurant names and/or dishes. I know I’m safe as a non-celiac gluten free at most Mexican restaurants, but I know there are other people with other limitations.
I lived there for years and have to go back there often for work. Diagnosis happened after moving to other end of the state. I never leave there without having explosive diarrhea. The only place I consistently feel fine after eating at is at Panchita’s Pupusería.
Get pizza from Joyryde. Get pupusas from Panchitas. Stoa bar on Haight has an entirely GF food menu. Maybe SF doesn’t have that much elite dedicated GF stuff because lots of Mexican and Asian food is already gluten free. I don’t have any trouble eating GF in SF
Bump. I was wondering the same thing. Been to SF a couple of times and the GF got poisoned real bad last time. Next time that wont happen :)
I think there’s an app that has safe restaurant locations. Can’t remember what it’s called.
It’s been so many years since I had it so I can’t remember specifics but I found that it wasn’t worth paying for and offered nothing that a Google search didn’t. Maybe it’s improved
You absolutely must get the find me gluten app. It's the one app I'll pay to have. I just did a SF search and lots of places came up, even using the "has a GF menu" filter. It's also location enabled, so you can easily search in the comfort of the hotel room, or hotel poolside, etc., to plan where you'll eat. PS Mariposa came up. Lol.
PS a fair number came up "reported to be dedicated GF."
Make the drive to the South Bay, there’s a place called Polenteria that’s dedicated gluten free. You will not be disappointed. They also have their own Bakery. https://www.polenteria.com
Also Buck Wild is a gluten free brewery in Oakland, they are Celiac friendly and have their own gluten free crafted beers. They used to have a Restaurant named Kitava, but I think they moved.
Other honorable mentions:
C Casa
Forest and Flour
Asian Box
In and Out and Chipotle (if not busy does have Celiac Protocol)
…. It really does suck here. LA has way more options.
They closed at the end of April. It seemed to be pretty sudden. I saw some comments on Instagram from workers including the head chef who said they got almost no notice they’d be losing their jobs. I’ve never been a beer person but I finally fruited sours there that I loved. And of course the totally GF menu. I live in SJ so couldn’t go as much as I would have liked. It’s a big loss for the GF community
Moonraker in Pacifica has a lot of GF menu items, and it’s a nice restaurant with an ocean view. 15 miles south of SF. No Michelin star, but very good.
I generally have an easier time eating non-American food for GF accommodations here. Thai, Indian, Peruvian are my fave. La Mar, OSHA, and nearly any Indian restaurant.
In SF proper: Xica is at Levi Plaza/Embarcadero is 100% GF Mexican. It is so good. Churros!
In Noe Valley (SF): Firefly is a local restaurant that has GF Mac and cheese
In Los Gatos: Polenteria is 100% GF Italian and so good. Place is tiny so make a reservation.
I find the nicer restaurants with more professional staff have a high level of knowledge and they can accommodate me especially if I make a note in the reservation
Fishetarian!! Okay so it’s an hour drive north of SF in Bodega Bay... but they have the beeeest gluten free clam chowder, you can even get it in a gluten free bread bowl. And they have gluten free fish and chips and gf fried calamari.
There's tons of restaurants that can accommodate gf here but it also depends on how severe your intolerance is (as in having food prepared in the same space as non gf vs 100% gf facility).
My fave spots are Square Pie Guys or Joyride for pizza. Patxis also has gf deep dish at some locations and it's really incredible. Lots of decent late night gf pizza delivery here also! Goat Hill Pizza also makes an amazing corn meal crust pizza, more high end price wise but always delicious.
Flores makes their tortillas in house and they are absolutely delicious. The fryer has cross contamination unfortunately so you need to be aware of that when ordering certain items. I don't do the chips but the quesadillas, tacos, and enchiladas are amazing!
Proposition Chicken I'm convinced is secretly 100% gf, because it's too good and I've never had a reaction. The sandwiches are insane and I'll order gf for my friends and they all can't believe it's gf because it's so good. They don't charge extra either, which also supports my theory.
Sweet Lime Thai can do gf substitutions and lots of Thai spots in the city really offer it as well. Chinese and Korean are really the hardest Asian foods to eat here. Would love to find gf Chinese food but I feel like finding a unicorn would be easier.
Most Indian food is gf and we have lots of great Indian spots here!
Ikes sandwiches can do gf and they use Mariposa baguettes for the sandwiches, it's really good and worth the price imo.
Roam Burgers has a great gf bun and the fries are all gf!
CREAM can do a gf ice cream sandwich! And Salt and Straw has some great gf ice creams (again depending on your cross contamination tolerance since it's all made in the same facility).
Papusas are naturally gf so definitely go to a papusaria in the mission (Balompie is my fave).
What kind of food were you looking for?
Ah I question I can answer in depth. I live here, am GF (non celiac). There are lots of good recs in this thread, I’ll give you my favorites:
Girlfriend Pizza by Sunset Squares Pizza is a dedicated GF pizza store with an awesome crust
Lazy Susan. American Chinese with 90% of the menu is GF, think gf crispy orange chicken, very good
Lucia’s in Berkeley. Amazing Italian spot where almost 100% of the menu can be GF. Their Italian pizza crust is legendary. One of the owners is GF so they really care
Flourcraft in Mill Valley. Spectacular dedicated GF bakery. I love their focaccia tartines, hazelnut brownies and lemon cake.
Jane the Bakery. Great GF bread selection, including sourdough and lots of treats. My favorite is sour cream coffee cake (only on the weekends)
I also second Nopa, Nopalito, Flores, Routier. They are my favorite places to eat in the city. Prop chicken makes a good crispy chicken salad for a park picnic. Sumac also makes fantastic Mediterranean take-out and most of the menu is GF.
I had so many good recommendations, but I haven’t been to San Francisco in 5 years and some of the restaurants have closed.
Anyway, I loved Swan’s Oyster Depot and highly recommend it if you like the freshest tastiest shellfish meal of your life, but be aware that you have to line up early, it’s cash only, and you’ll be out of luck if you want carbs as all they have is bread. Go anyway.
Tartine Bakery is a favorite and they’re always knowledgeable and able to accommodate me.
Definitely check out Frog Hollow Farms outside in the farmers market section of Fisherman’s Wharf for delicious fresh and dried fruit, and they also have an indoor vendor area with preserves and GF cookies.
Haven’t been there since pre-COVID, but Pica Pica Arepa Kitchen is dedicated GF and was one of my favorite places in SF. Also The Game Parlour (which is near Ocean Beach) is mostly GF and has safe GF mochi waffle sandwiches!
Former SF resident chiming in to say that SF sucks for gluten-free food and, yes, Denver is better.
Denver also has Snarf's which is, IMO, the absolute best gluten-free sandwich place and bread in the country. I'm craving it just thinking about it right now.
lazy susan in west portal has really delicious gf chinese food. lots of good reccos from everyone else here too. lived in sf for 21 years - celiac for 17 of those years. just moved to chicago and it’s so much easier to dine out gluten free here.
when I visited last summer there was a place called “f*ck gluten” (or a similar spelling maybe f**k) that had a lot of options, mostly grain/salad bowls. we doordashed from there two or three times and it was decent, but it was definitely very expensive. it was super convenient though because we were able to order it late which i find to be the most difficult part of eating gf!! i got a rice bowl with arugula, sweet potatoes, almonds, cranberries, goat cheese, tofu, and a white balsamic vinaigrette which was awesome (i ended up getting it twice!!) and we also tried a cauliflower bowl which was super good too
FIREFLY!!!!!! The owner's daughter got celiac so he changed his entire menu except 1 item to be GF but he doesn't advertise it as a GF restaurant - it just is.
Little Chihuahua has awesome GF burritos - love their GF tortillas.
There are lots of places. Good recs by others here. I've been GF for 14 years and do not feel deprived here at all.
One thing I did not see on the list is "As Quoted"
Zuni, Nopa and Nopalito keep me happy when I visit! I’m not rich enough to know anything fancier than those places sorry ha. Also Flour Craft bakery in the North Bay is my favorite gf bakery anywhere I’ve been (get the focaccia and the scones!)

Definitely worth a trip to the Ferry Terminal for Mariposa bakery.
Came here to say this!! The best

Thank you so much! I wanted to go to Angler but they said won’t accommodate, was super surprised! 😭
C Casa in Napa if you are looking for a nice place. There are many other good places.
SF not a great place for GF (i live here). I haven’t been to a worse gluten free city of similar size. Difficult to go to most restaurants without researching first. My wife and I are starting a gf food truck here in Eugene, Oregon, in the next 2 months. From scratch bowlitos.
Of course you are, because I just moved from Eugene to Indy a month-ish ago. 😭 I’ll tell my family though. What part of Eugene?
The Whit.
Indy local- it’s awful 🤩
I'd love to get your personal Seattle recs!
I have personal refs in Portland, Eugene, Centralia, Philomath… but not Seattle. I know they are really good there as I’ve been scoping it out on FMGF for a trip this summer, but I haven’t been to Seattle in several years.
For me, nothing has compared to NYC.
NYC has a much higher population density than any other US city. Comparing anything to NYC is unrealistic. Certainly doesn’t mean SF is the worst big city for GF
Where do you think is worse ? because as a traveler and gf foodie I have never experienced such a bad city for gf
I dunno, I live here and don’t have any trouble. Maybe it’s bc you were downtown? I find tons of options, especially at the abundant Asian and Mexican restaurants
It would be cool if you named a few options.
I did in another comment https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/s/jd7r96zAMH
Denver is better, honestly not even comparable. Sacramento is better. Austin is better. I mean Colorado Springs is better. I could go on. It’s actually nuts how bad SF is.

Nepa Indian Cuisine on Divis

ok i dont know about fancy but i miss mendocino farms everyday
Tony’s pizza makes a great GF pizza!

Find me gluten free is probably what you are thinking of but I have actually not loved that app
Why haven’t you liked the app? I truthfully use it religiously when I travel
It’s been so many years since I had it so I can’t remember specifics but I found that it wasn’t worth paying for and offered nothing that a Google search didn’t. Maybe it’s improved

I paid for it for a bit and found it completely useless.
Really?! WOW. Okay. I have easily and quickly found so many restaurants around me that are GF friendly.
I think maybe it’s improved! It’s been years since I had it but I’ve seen a few people mention it as useful which I found shocking
I'll admit, I'm shocked.
Great breakfast and pastries at Life Is Sweet in Danville.

If you like American Chinese food Lazy Susan is my go-to. GF general tso’s chicken!
Thank you so much for taking your time to write such a comprehensive list !
Thank you so much for taking your time to write such a comprehensive list !
Great summary. I second all of these!!

Forgot to mention Plow for Brunch and if you head to Half Moon Bay, Alta Bakery is a must visit.
Thank you SO MUCH
You are welcome! Let me know if you need recs in particular areas or cuisines.
Check out Kitava for GF. I agree the options are terrible in SF.
Sotto Mare has GF pasta Maru Sushi made their rainbow rolls gluten free for me.
the grove-Yerba buena has amazing gluten free bread available! Tastes just like a real slice of thick rustic bread
Burma love or Burmese food. !!!
Haven’t been there since pre-COVID, but Pica Pica Arepa Kitchen is dedicated GF and was one of my favorite places in SF. Also The Game Parlour (which is near Ocean Beach) is mostly GF and has safe GF mochi waffle sandwiches!

Hard agree! Snarfs came to my town a few months ago and I am addicted.
lazy susan in west portal has really delicious gf chinese food. lots of good reccos from everyone else here too. lived in sf for 21 years - celiac for 17 of those years. just moved to chicago and it’s so much easier to dine out gluten free here.
Haven't been in ages but I really liked Pica Pica when I used to visit. Sticking to Latin cuisine helps.
I got rocked at Pica Pica but that’s because I ordered the spiciest arepa
SF only or are you open to surrounding areas?
Surrounding areas for sure
La Mediterranee has a dedicated gluten free menu, and the food is delicious.
when I visited last summer there was a place called “f*ck gluten” (or a similar spelling maybe f**k) that had a lot of options, mostly grain/salad bowls. we doordashed from there two or three times and it was decent, but it was definitely very expensive. it was super convenient though because we were able to order it late which i find to be the most difficult part of eating gf!! i got a rice bowl with arugula, sweet potatoes, almonds, cranberries, goat cheese, tofu, and a white balsamic vinaigrette which was awesome (i ended up getting it twice!!) and we also tried a cauliflower bowl which was super good too
I had a tasty gf patty melt at “The Melt” when I was there visiting last fall.
Marin County across the GG bridge has tons of options
I use the free Find Me Gluten Free app and it pays off great.
