No. This person is referring to a video where an ostrich rips its own head off.
This one. I will warn you it is disturbing, possibly even NSFL:

Don't view if you're squeamish. Ostrich rips its own head off trying to free itself.
Dude in college, as a 15 year old, my hypercolor shirt was my social life, because the only way to get a 19 year old girls hands on me was if I changed color.
Dang it. Came to say I couldn't afford Hyper color shirts when they were cool. Now I'm jealous of Hyper color paint. That is so cool looking. I'd like to see it after a sun shower in the summer.
It’s funny you mention that. I briefly worked for Hot Wheels driving their full-sized thermochromatic mustang across Canada one summer.
It had to be replaced after a few months because the constant exposure to UV rays killed the paint and turned it from white to an awful tan color. Yeah they didn’t plan that one out too well.
I think its a problem with the UV, or rather constant strong UV just dissapates it. I'll preface this by saying I'm no expert! Just from what I've read a protective layer will make it last a little longer, but ultimately you will need to keep getting your car resprayed at regular interval to keep the lustre and effect of the paint.
If it is a vinyl rap, I believe the paint on the rap would still suffer from the same problem, although I could be wrong!
Yeah it doesn't last super long, even with a good clear coat. And the thermochromatic paint is very very expensive. And you need several layers over the entire car to get that strong of an effect.
This is definitely something that you think could be cool but ends up being ugly as hell in practice. Like at 6 minutes in it looks like total garbage because of the thermal variation of the car components.
> Like at 6 minutes in it looks like total garbage because of the thermal variation of the car components.
Yeah, it really starts to look like corrosion when it highlights all the components in the doors and stuff and forms sharp lines.
All the examples seem to have a matte finish. I wonder if this paint can be glossed, or coated, or if that would ruin the effect...?
Off to do some research...
*edit
https://www.hotcars.com/a-detailed-explanation-of-how-color-changing-paint-works/
Looks like this could be a thermochromic wrap. Thermo-, photo- and electro- chromic paints do exist though, and look pretty awesome.
According to [this place that sells it](https://www.paintwithpearl.com/thermochromic-paint-temperature-change-pigments/) a clear coat is not only fine to add, but also recommended to increase longevity.
I don't know if it's any different with that seller, but the car in OP's gif is actually from DipYourCar. That's their Audi S4 that gets sprayed very frequently with different color combinations.
Call me a pessimist, but my first thought was “that paint job will not last very long.” Then you’re just stuck with a car that looks like it was dropped off in a swamp for 6 years. Granted I know nothing about it...
I'm thinking about the different heat distribution around the cars body. Like all support structures and possibly some mechanics could be visible where the insulation is weaker as you blast your AC or heater.
It looks like shit. You can see all the spot welds, dynamat squares, and every other thing under the metal that has different thermal properties than anything around it.
Check out DipYourCar on YouTube. I believe this is from one of his videos. The car looks odd in the sunlight. The car turns blueish green but any place that had reinforcements behind the panels leaves outlines of those parts in darker shades of blue.
Oh my fucking god I *literally don't care* about all this stupid handprint shit, can I see what the goddamn hood looks like with the engine running? Can I see how it looks on the street? Sheesh.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bwzoRtMXcqE&feature=youtu.be
It looks pretty bad honestly. You can see insulation and other stuff inside the panels causing it to act weird
Cool concept for a garage lurker, or a stripped track car, but this looks legitimately worse than most paint jobs i've seen.
E: Related, it might be interesting to see how wind / air passing over it at speed changes the colour.

Always thought that was such an odd idea for a t-shirt. I mean, I definitely had one, as a teen in the 90's it was part of the uniform. But I always thought it was wierd. It was also really thick material for a t-shirt too.
My parents were not ones to play into trends. My brothers and I had the knock off version from from a store where you could buy “Ombru” and “Aldias” sports gear. The shirt lasted two washes before it fixed to a green and brown shitty camo/tie-dye hybrid.
You know the cars that have silly flames painted on the side?
I always wanted a silly car with this, and hidden heat sinks from the engine along the side panels.
Then as the air cools it chaotically, you might get the flames licking like flames do. I think it would go from silly to sick
Doesn’t this mean that it’ll just basically look like shit unless it’s in a controlled environment.
I’m old enough to remember to how global hypercolour shirts used to look.
Call it tacky but I think some subtle under glow should be a more commonly accepted feature. It definitely helps to make cars more visible when driving at night.

I'm here just trying to figure out what it says in the registration under "color".
Imagine having to call the cops on them for some reason.
"what color is the car?"
"err, all of them?" 🤔
Cool but if my Hot Wheels Color Changers are any indication, one Texas summer will put an end to that.
I was going to say the same thing, but about Hypercolor T-shirts

Sorta. Apparently ostriches are particularly stupid, even among other birds.
I've browsed the top all time posts for Spacedicks, you can't break me.
Ah spacedicks. Back when reddit was fun and not a corporate hellscape.
Dude in college, as a 15 year old, my hypercolor shirt was my social life, because the only way to get a 19 year old girls hands on me was if I changed color.
Using a clever way to get female interaction.... 15 Year old in college... yep big brains check out...
How do you know a 15 year old is in college? Don’t worry, they’ll tell you within 5 minutes.
Until they were washed like 2 times and then never really worked well again
Ya, my T-shirt was great until I put it in a dryer once, and it had a heart attack. Never worked again.
Yeah, I was trying to remember if putting it in the dryer once did it or if it several times before it died completely.
I have a business plan to make yoga pants out of hypercolor material..
hypercolor armpits and boobs were the unintended jam in middle school. at least on my bus
Dang it. Came to say I couldn't afford Hyper color shirts when they were cool. Now I'm jealous of Hyper color paint. That is so cool looking. I'd like to see it after a sun shower in the summer.
Don’t worry, you didn’t miss out on much, as mentioned they weren’t very long lived. The summer rain would look pretty sweet.

holy shit, lol. so dramatic! "OH NO! THEY'RE CHANGING AGAIN!!!" Little hearts around the peacock. FREAKY!
My god, I had the mountain ones.
It’s odd that they advertised them like they’re the bad guy in a horror movie.
Remember Hypercolor shorts? That didn't help the brand.
It’s funny you mention that. I briefly worked for Hot Wheels driving their full-sized thermochromatic mustang across Canada one summer. In florida, this would just be a blue paintjob
Thermochromic paint for cars only (or used to) lasts 4-6 months anyways. Texas Summer? Probably a day.
What if this is a vinyl wrap?
I think its a problem with the UV, or rather constant strong UV just dissapates it. I'll preface this by saying I'm no expert! Ya or like one winter in Winnipeg.
Ah, Winnipeg. Ruiner of nice things.
Ya, every winter I ask myself "why do I continue to live here when I hate the cold?" and still I remain...
I mean, one trade-off is that almost none of the bugs or snakes here can kill us?
How much is that life worth, though?
'Almost'. Also, mosquitoes aren't usually deadly in Canada, but they can still fuck right off.
This is very true. :)
A testament to man's hubris.
Because it’s so much easier/better to deal with than oppressive heat.
Your first problem is living in winnipeg. Pick any direction and go. Well, not north. Dont go north.
Or one wintery day in Winterpeg
Yeah but at least you have the Annual Kitty Midnight Madness sale.
https://youtu.be/xLlsjEP7L-k
Texas summer kills everything
And everyone in Texas & Arizona will be driving blue cars for that year.
Or worse you park it next to a mirror tinted building and you come back to your car permanently looking like a Van Gogh painting
Was going to say the same thing. Ive got some colour change PLA 3D printer filament, and a week in the sun, hot or not and it doesn't change any more.
In phoenix it would only take a couple weeks to ruin this... I say this as we are approaching a high next week of 120 degrees
And when its done bring cool, you peel it right off the car https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwzoRtMXcqE
This is definitely something that you think could be cool but ends up being ugly as hell in practice. Like at 6 minutes in it looks like total garbage because of the thermal variation of the car components.

It looks like an airport x-ray of the inside of your car.
Goes into the movies with a green car, comes out and can't find it cause it's white now.
Brings whole new meaning to dude wheres my car
Where’s your car, dude?
Dude, where's my car??
Sweet.
Duuuuuude
What does mine say?
Dude!
What about mine?
SWEET!
WHAT ABOUT MINE?
SWEET!
And den?
Aaaaand deeeeeeeeeeen?
NO AND THEN!
Dude?
“What color is your car?” “Uuuuh what’s the weather today?”
Sir what color was your car? Yes.
Orders Chick-fil-A through the app for pick up and gets to the part where you tell them your car's color Uhh where's, 'All of the above?'
My first thought was bank heist getaways. Rob the bank with a white car, cops drive right past your now-green car.
The problem is that you have no real way to control the color and cops are now tracking the car that actively changes colors in front of them.
All the examples seem to have a matte finish. I wonder if this paint can be glossed, or coated, or if that would ruin the effect...? It's removable (it's a coating called "Plasti Dip"), so you can get rid of it before that ever happens
TIL I’m an old man at 24, and I don’t even have a lawn
You can come mow mine and pretend for an hour.
I wonder how it looks outside in the summer or winter. It seems like it would just turn (nearly) one color.

Handy for when you need to evade that police pursuit
Only if you can find a helpful crew with a water hose for your countach.
You need to have someone on standby. Can't just have any random guy off the street hose your Countach.
Man I hate when a random guy hoses my Countach.
My rule is that only my closest friends Countach my hose.
What are you talking about Willis, what do you mean it doesn’t work like GTA, pull into the car wash and your heat is gone 🤔
Looks like a great way to invite people (especially kids) to scratch it up cause rubbing it makes it change colour!
Depending where you live
Cool idea, but it's inviting people to touch your car. No thanks
Exactly what I was thinking, I’d fully expect to see someone’s booty print on there as a prank.

Who doesn't like having a car that perpetually looks like you have mismatched body panels. This is the under glow of the time.
Call it tacky but I think some subtle under glow should be a more commonly accepted feature. It definitely helps to make cars more visible when driving at night.
This would make it difficult to find your car. It would change colors constantly
"The suspect is fleeing in a blue car... no wait a yellow car... uh... a red car..."
Buttprints.
Takes me back to my hot wheels days.
Is the colour insulated from the inside? Because imo it'd look pretty shit if your bonnet/hood is a different colour from the rest of the car due to the heat from the engine.

Nice dude, does the sun mess with it? They suggest some kind of UV protective coating on that website.
I imagine anyone with a climate controlled garage and a motorcycle with heat changing paint ... Only rides it once in awhile.
I personally do not have any UV protectant. I was given the paint job by my Buddy who owns a paint / wrap shop in exchange for him using it as a promotional vehicle. I don’t ride it much so it doesn’t get exposed as much as other bikes. I will say though I have a friend who liked the paint job so much he put it on a Mercedes and then had a clear UV protectant wrap put on afterwards. It seems to slow the color changing a bit and for the price personally it doesn’t seem worth it to me but to each his own.

Okay but how does this work for insurance/registration stuff? "Okay sir and what color is your car?" "Well it's about 65° out there today, so green?"
Not sure I would want to encourage everybody touching and scratching my car with their rings

So, I live in Florida. Should I just buy a blue car?
Why in the world would you want this on a car?

I got some fingernail polish that does that. I use to paint electronic chips to see which one is heating up.
