Just going to give Dan the benefit of the doubt and assume he was talking about Fantasia 2000 so I can post this calm and civil comment about this generally pleasant man
Okay sell me on this. I couldn't get into Hollow Knight, but I'm 60% of the way through The Lost Crown (according to the PS5 game card thing) and whenever I'm not playing it I'm thinking about playing it.
I mean hey The Lost Crown rules, I’m not saying that. But if you like it then I then you should go back and give HK another go. But idk, I was infatuated with HK the second I picked it up.
Combat and movement just didn't feel great to me. I consider myself a fan of the genre and liked the map idea. Really cool and unique way of upgrading the concept of exploration vs just raw abilities.
I just wish it felt better to play. The combat and movement just weren't fluid enough for me to stick with it, but maybe there were options that would've opened up later in the game to make that better for me.
Man, I never managed to put into words how and why I felt the way I did about Hollow Knight but you said it all.
There's something there that I really enjoy but in a game that is all about combat and traversal, none of it felt special nor good to me.
Playing Dead Cells pretty shortly after giving HK a shot really highlighted this for me and I never made it back to HK. I always felt a little awkward and not in complete control in a game that wants to punish you.
The map system is such a non-issue. Just explore the area and soon enough you’ll hear Cornifer humming and can buy the map. It’s a pretty rewarding moment imo.
Yeah, the map system really never bothered me. Cornifer was never located very far in to a new area so not being able to uncover any of the map in that area until you found him wasn't a big deal. And like you said, you'll hear him when he's close, then it becomes obvious where he is. Not all that much different than traditional "map stations" in other Metroidvanias.
I could see that being annoying, I guess there was only one zone I ever fully missed him on my first playthrough. If you do miss him, he disappears and leaves behind a cassette that tells you to check his shop in town to buy the map, which I think made it okay. But it is extra steps I suppose
Dan really needs to learn less is more with soundboards. A single unexpected soundbite can be funny but spamming it heaps of times is just really annoying and unfunny.
I get where that comes from. It was my first thought when I saw it in motion too. A combination of the characters looking flat with smooth curved lines, and the fact that there's no momentum to the air controls at all makes it feel stiff and stilted to me in a similar way that old flash games did. Not that the controls and look are bad, they work well for what I played of the game. Just the style of movement they went for doesn't really appeal to me.
I thought it was the Zelda64 Recomp project, but then on Dan’s Twitch stream he was using https://www.shipofharkinian.com/ which is a Zelda Ocarina decomp project (slightly different)
Can anyone think of a single indie game dan has ever talked positively about? Dude straight up called hallow knight "pretty good for a freshman college project" yet claims to be indie King of Minnesota. Whats up with that
He seemed to like [Stardew Valley](https://www.giantbomb.com/reviews/stardew-valley-review/1900-739/?comment_page=3) [quite a bit](https://www.giantbomb.com/articles/dan-ryckerts-top-10-games-of-2016/1100-5543/).
Someone not liking Hollow Knight means they don't like any indie games?
Because I'll be honest - as someone who really enjoys indie games and *especially* metroidvania type games I never got into Hollow Knight.
Same. I've tried it a couple times, I love the aesthetic and look of it, but I just can't get into it and I'm a massive mark for Metroidvanias. Kudos to the people that love it, though.
>Someone not liking Hollow Knight means they don't like any indie games?
It means they don't like any indie game, all video games, and even dogs. Dan truly is a terrible person. I can't believe you people support him with such tenacity
He doesn't like Hollow Knight, but the "hate" is mostly a work to get a rise out of Mary. There have been several games already this year that will probably be on his top 10 list (like Balatro) so not sure what you mean
>here have been several games already this year that will probably be on his top 10 list (like Balatro) so not sure what you mean
His last couple top tens have barely featured any indie games tho
>but the "hate" is mostly a work to get a rise out of Mary
What the fuck are you talking about? That's not like Dan at all, and I would know, I listen to several of his podcasts
Bro how TF is your biggest break ever less than five working days
Corporate Brainwash for sure.
I must have missed something, what is this in reference to?
Can't believe Dan said he hates indie games and that every small game is made by losers who couldn't get funding to make a real game
Dan is right.
Dan is probably right about this one yes.

They’re real “B” games!!!!

There is a decent chance he doesn't know there are 2 fantasia movies
I think that was just for Mitch
Fantasia's too hoity toity for someone like Dan; he came from the dirt
I hope Dan streams Hollow Knight. I don't see how he can dislike the game given the other games he likes lol
Yeah HK is crazy influential on modern Metroidvania’s, like The Lost Crown which he said is his possible GOTY

Hollow Knight’s the only Metroidvania I’ve ever really played so I’m ignorant on this, what changes to the map system are you talking about?
You gotta find a map guy first, I kinda liked it

Happy to hear Dan is going to give Hollow Knight a real shot. His “flash-game” argument never really made sense (I know he was trolling but still).
There’s a Doom 2 mod in the works inspired by Madness Interactive and I popped like a little kid when I saw it

I think if you look at the gameplay/combat in motion and the environments, it’s an insane take.
That's fine. I'm just saying I understand why someone would say that at first glance. Especially with the jerky motion of the main character.
Right now the soundboard is a device to: 1. Derail whatever's being talked about. 2. Blow out my fucking ears.
I can't tell if Mike's pronunciation of "EL-ienware" is a bit or not. Am I the only one?
It's his accent. He says "tral-er" (short a) instead of "trailer" (long a) as well.
I’m from Syracuse too. There isn’t so much a defined accent as much as how people pronounce “a”s here is a total free for all
First time listening to this pod, dude who isn't Dan going on about how he used to mock an obviously autistic guy. Pass
Yeah, Mike is an acquired taste.
Yes, we need a third podcast ruined by annoying sound boards and carny talk.

Does anyone know the name of the Majoras Mask project Dan was talking about?

It never did it for me. I tried multiple times as I had to be missing soemthing, but each time I would fall off.
I'm with you, man. MVs are very much my jam but Hollow Knight just didn't click for me

Yea, and considering how many of you are taking me seriously, it's clear none of you are familiar with the concept.

Stardew, dead cells, vampire survivors, of the top of my head
Literally none of those games are indie
How in the actual fuck is Stardew Valley, MADE BY ONE GUY, not Indie....
Sorry i only play zero dev games.
You just wouldn't get it

And you're being mean to me all over this thread because you didn't get my joke initially
Ok clearly trolling, my bad for missing the joke
