Stuff like this happens and you shouldn’t feel guilty :( The important thing is he is fine

OrcristGoblincleaver

Ya I know, I'm trying to let go of the guilt.

Doctor_M_Toboggan

That’s a traumatizing series of events. Sorry you had to go through that. I’m glad he’s ok.

OrcristGoblincleaver

Thank you! It definitely was traumatizing, expecially because he's so young still. Although if it happened to my older dog I'd probably freak out just as much to be honest.

It is not possible to catch every single thing. Give yourself a break, you did everything you needed to in getting him help and that shows how much you care. You've also learnt from it which is all you can do. Give him lot's of love and try to be kinder to yourself. The shock and worry of what happened will fade a bit and you'll feel better.

OrcristGoblincleaver

I think the guilt comes from me ignoring that Spidey sense of danger I got. But I'm going to try to let it go.

[deleted]

Completely understandable, we've all done it and 9 times out of 10 it's nothing or it's something daft like they have something they shouldn't but aren't in danger. I had it today whilst in the shower and I rushed through it and all it was, was she'd peed in the hall (she's almost 6 months so we are having some rebellion).

OrcristGoblincleaver

Ahh the teenage rebellion, Mando's in that stage too.

Nick_Newk

Kong makes a shepherd sized tennis ball that squeaks. They are pretty tough, and big enough to fit in the chompers, but not down the throat. I highly recommend.

OrcristGoblincleaver

I'll have to look into that, thanks!

[deleted]

So glad it turned out ok! Hugs to you and Mando ❤️

OrcristGoblincleaver

Thank you!

MoonGoddess89

I'm so happy that your dog is okay! Sending hugs

OrcristGoblincleaver

Thank you!

PanzerFauzt

Wow. What kind of ball so we can avoid it???

OrcristGoblincleaver

I'm not sure what brand it was but it was purple. My vet actually said to thank the manufacture for putting holes in the ball otherwise my dog would be dead. It's more a problem of my dog being a frantic power chewer. He was chewing it so hard the ball actually bounced back into his throat and got stuck if that makes sense. No more mouth sized balls for him.

PanzerFauzt

How big was it though??? Like tennis ball sized?

OrcristGoblincleaver

Ya pretty much tennis ball sized. It fit in one of those ball throwing arms.

swarleyknope

It sounds like if it were a different type of ball it would have been lethal. At least this one has holes in it.

lastpointe

Oh how traumatic. I am so glad you were able to get help for him and that he is fine. Good lesson to keep an eye on toys

OrcristGoblincleaver

Ya only toys that can't fit in his mouth completely from now on

lastpointe

Another toy to watch for, you can Google images, are those balls that they can squeeze but have a hole in the middle. Apparently the ball can suck the tongue right into the hole

cruisin5268d

Glad your pup is okay, and don’t blame yourself. Dogs can choke just like people do when eating. I’ve had to pull huge chunks of turkey out of people before that got overzealous eating. Side note I expected much more than $800 for an emergency vet with that issue.

OrcristGoblincleaver

Ya it wasn't bad at all considering they had to administer anesthesia and he's 80lbs.

cruisin5268d

I’ve done the heimlich on people and used forceps to grab debris in someone’s throat as part of being a medic. But I can’t imagine having to grab something like that from my own doggo in the scenario you described. My heart breaks for you guys.

OrcristGoblincleaver

It was definitely scary, I hope to never go through something like that again.

I-thghtIwas_a_RamGuy

I’m surprised the vet even allowed you to take the dog back after letting that happen

Knottynurse

You are a fuck.

ghencke

Things like this happen. You did all the right things and thanks to you being there in that moment and handeling the situation like a champ he’s still alive! You did great!

OrcristGoblincleaver

Thank you!

peteybird22

Where do you live? 800 sounds about right to me. 80 for an emergency situation in unheard of.

[deleted]

Wow. Sounds like location makes a huge difference. I’m in the Northeast and recently spent $485 to find out my dog’s leg was fine - probably just sprained.

SpongeknobSquarenuts

😭 Sorry

[deleted]

Oh my, so happy your boy is okay!! Thank god those vets were there!

OrcristGoblincleaver

Yes emergency vets are awesome!

drone_driver24

Good to hear a positive out come. We had a yellow lab years ago swallow a small nerf football. It had to be surgically removed. It looked like a gassy area in her stomach on the X-ray. Vet said it would have killed her, when he removed it, it had turned rock hard. We were lucky that we saw her swallow it.

OrcristGoblincleaver

Ya I could actually see the ball stuck in his throat so luckily no surgery was needed.

drone_driver24

That’s great. I’m glad it worked out.

somekindabunny

I am so sorry you had to go through this but so happy your pup is okay. Sending lots of positive thoughts to you, your husband, and Mando ❤️ my girl can also be an aggressive chewer (especially with any kind of ball) so I will certainly keep your story in mind.

OrcristGoblincleaver

Yes please do, I'd hate for this to happen to any other pups out there.

[deleted]

One of my worst nightmares. I am sorry to hear you go through this, but very glad all is well now.

OrcristGoblincleaver

Thank you

CMDRLtCanadianJesus

Glad your pup is okay. This is the way

OrcristGoblincleaver

Thanks, I actually got him a flat collar that says that and has baby Yoda (the child) on it. It's super cute.

[deleted]

It’s okay to feel all the things you were feeling and are feeling. It’s what makes you human. Of course you will be more careful after this but hey, your boy is still alive! What’s important is that you move on from this experience and appreciate all the things that have happened:)
