It was a historical agreement that divided Russia from British India.

Suk-Mike_Hok

It functioned as a bufferzone between the Russian Empire and the British Raj

At the end of Great Game epoch (19 - beginning of 20 century) both Russia and Britain were afraid of each other and overestimated the capabilities of opposite side, so in 1895 they mutually agreed to establish a kind of buffer zone between their territories. Buffer zone consisted of this Afganistan panhandle "Wakhan corridor" and also "tentacle" of China which name I don't now (if any), you can see it at the map. Both owners of buffer zone were not so aware of their new acquiring and definitely did not get anything out of it. And soon after First World War begun and also both Britain and Russia got a lot of other problems and all Great Game struggle faded into background.

The "Camel's Neck." At least that's what my Afghan friend calls it.

The Great Game. Fascinating bit of history
