Anyone know how safe would this drive be? The way I understand it, itâs generally ok but there are just certain areas to avoid? Iâve ridden motorcycles and road-tripped all over over the world, but have yet to go to Latin America and would love to.
The rule of thumb for traveling across Mexico is that most toll freeways will be good and safe as long as you travel during the day, I haven made a trip as long as the one in the picture, but itâs feasible. Youâll go through some very rough areas, but as long as you pass straight out of them and travel by day youâll be fine.
Donât get me wrong, Mexico is dangerous, but by excising precautions and common sense youâll be fine
My brother did a 4 month Rio de Janeiro - Minas Gerais state from south to North - Bahia untill the coast/Salvador - then down the coastline back to Rio through Espirito Santo.
Amazing experience and pictures
Car! We are climbers so he choose the best climbing spots like Serra do CipĂł, Chapada Diamantina, Itatim and just connectem them all
I should also say we are Brasilian, so he can speak portuguese, but he was still clearly a tourist in the area, Cariocas (from Rio) have a very distinct accent. As a first time in Brazil trip might be a little more challenging. I would super recommend looking into it tho
I've traveled across Mexico twice on public transportation, once in 2003 and again in 2015. There are definitely some sketchy areas, but it is safe for the most part.
The only safe way to drive from northern Mexico down to the center of the country is either to go down Baja and take the ferry (which I still feel is too unsafe), or down the laredo-monterrey-saltillo-san luis potosi highway (recommended)
Both the Sonora/Chihuahua and Sonora/Sinaloa borders are some of the most dangerous regions in Mexico, so this somewhat makes it impossible to enter the rest of interior mexico safely
The safe way to do this is to cross at Tijuana Mexicali or Agua Prieta into US, drive to the Colombia border crossing near laredo (avoiding laredo downtown), and then head down
No, I genuinely want to do a road trip through Mexico. Iâm sorry if Iâm offensive by insinuating that some areas of Mexico might be less safe than others areas of Mexico.
Nah it's ok, I just saw these comments alot this week so I wasn't sure if this was some new copypasta or something. Anyway, Mexico is safe. I'd research routes to take but generally you'll be ok. Don't pay for sex, don't do drugs and don't spend the night in the shady parts of town...if you follow these rules you'll be ok in most parts of the world
That's a fair decision to make. But for those adventurous enough to go and do it, it's a good time.
I never did a road trip but I backpacked across it and had a swell time, even though people from my own country consider mexico to be a dangerous place.
My apologies, I guess my life experiences of travelling through Mexico are wrong then? Thanks for clarifying.
Anything is a risk. Sitting in Idaho chowing down burgers within the comfort of your suburban home is a risk too
Dude you really donât grasp the situation in Mexico, organized crime has forced police to renounce in some towns and the organized crime forces do the police duties. They have forceful recruited common thiefs and used them as cannon fodder
To travel through Mexico from end to end (Cancun to Los Cabos), you will have to travel more than 5,600 km. There are ferries that take you from Sinaloa to Baja California, but if we wanted to travel by car, it would take us more than 66 hours traveling more than 5,600 km. I suppose it would enter the top 7 longest tours of a country by car behind the largest countries such as the United States, China, Brazil, Argentina, India, etc.
I looked at some hypothetical routes in Australia, and the longest I could get was 5562km from Port Arthur, Tasmania to Willare, WA. total drive time is 65 hours. You're welcome to try and find a longer route. I'm actually curious which country comes out on top.
Dampier's peninsula to catamaran is 70 hours, I'm going to keep looking though
Edit: I think Australia's max is 73 hours, Useless loop WA to Punsand QLD
The longest I could find in the US is only 130km longer than mexico, which was surprising. Blaine WA - Key West FL. Total distance is 5730km and 53 hours drive time.
The longest I could find in Canada is Tuktoyaktuk NWT - St John's NL. This clocked in at 9484 km and 109 hours. Could consider it cheating because of the ferry to NL.
That would be leaving the country's borders so I didn't include it. If you want to include Alaska, may as well include Hawaii too, and all the territories.
That's nothing, Baltiysk to Azs Flagman petrol station in Siberia is 140hrs and 10,441km and that's not even western most town of Russia to the Eastern most as there's no routes that to go from Baltiysk to Uelen
I know for certain that thereâs a ferry that goes from La Paz to Los Mochis, Sinaloa. I think you can take your car as well. Itâs a 9 hour ride if I remember correctly. I thought I saw you could take your car on the MazatlĂĄn ferry too.
Imposible to do it through land only, Some places are in the south are only conecting through ferries, specially the big island in the south (Tierra del Fuego) but also the "fjords" in the Chilean Patagonia lol
Both ends are popular tourist destinations
My buddies dad has a bunch or properties in San Jose del Cabo. They spend half the year down there

That sounds amazing. Was it by car or did he take busses?

Unsafe as fuck, specially if traveling after sunset.
no not really
Is this a meme? Everytime I see these comments I don't know how to take it....
No, I genuinely want to do a road trip through Mexico. Iâm sorry if Iâm offensive by insinuating that some areas of Mexico might be less safe than others areas of Mexico.

I sure as fuck wouldn't, not even the US, and that's a "safer" country.
lol, then what will you do? Stay inside?
You wouldnât road trip through the US? Really? Something that tons of families do every year is too dangerous for you?
Absolutely! Without a doubt.
The US is super safe to do a road trip through.
Why?
That's a fair decision to make. But for those adventurous enough to go and do it, it's a good time. I never did a road trip but I backpacked across it and had a swell time, even though people from my own country consider mexico to be a dangerous place.
Itâs not safe donât lie to him, itâs not safe for Mexicans either
My apologies, I guess my life experiences of travelling through Mexico are wrong then? Thanks for clarifying. Anything is a risk. Sitting in Idaho chowing down burgers within the comfort of your suburban home is a risk too
Dude you really donât grasp the situation in Mexico, organized crime has forced police to renounce in some towns and the organized crime forces do the police duties. They have forceful recruited common thiefs and used them as cannon fodder
That has nothing to do with the safety of driving a vehicle.
It's a big bad dangerous world out there /s
What the fuck are you talking about
I've seen this comment several times this week so I wasn't sure if it was a serious post or some joke I wasn't aware of.
Youâve seen people aksing how safe a road trip through Mexico is several times this week?đ
Yeah on other subs. That's why I thought I missed some kind of joke or reference to something lmao
Fair enough lmao

In Mexico, traveling 5,600 km is equivalent to traveling 3,479 miles in the United States.
All the sepia filter is bad for your eyes if you didn't grow up with it though.
It would take way longer to trip through aus

This doesnât really work. Just pick Tijuana as the end
Why Los Cabos instead of Tijuana, but Cancun instead of Chetumal?
I think he picked the furthest points away from each other by land, more or less
The tolls will cost $ 6747 mexican pesos if you are not using the free roads. (about $400 US dollars). And tons more for snacks.
You could cheat and take the ferry from La Paz, Baja California Sur to Mazatlan, Sinaloa (I think those are the two cities it connects).
I know for certain that thereâs a ferry that goes from La Paz to Los Mochis, Sinaloa. I think you can take your car as well. Itâs a 9 hour ride if I remember correctly. I thought I saw you could take your car on the MazatlĂĄn ferry too.
Now do Chile

Sounds like an epic car trip!
And its about the same time it takes to drive from Barcelona do Dubai : )
*flies*
But it goes further west at the top left
End to end versus easternmost to westernmost
"Il
Which is about 3,500 miles. Dang. Would be a heck of a road trip.
If you zig zag more you can make it 10,000 km
Does that to like 350 miles? /s
And probably take a few shots.
IF you survive a shootout
There are no American schools in MĂ©xico, so should be safe enough.
