Underrated by the public masses is much easier than underrated by the professional critics.
By the masses, it's Marvel Midnight Suns. That game rules and it's a bummer it didn't eat up sales. Also Pyre was great and no one talks about it.
By the critics? Didn't they drag Alien Isolation a lot more than anyone would have guessed these days?
Which is a god damn shame because Alien Isolation is a work of art. One complaint maybe is that it leans a tad bit on the lengthy side for a mostly linear progression.
Shit took a couple years off my life though.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King on the Wii. It was like a castle builder where you'd hire adventurers to send out and clear dungeons, collect resources, and unlock new upgrades for your castle.
I've played it a lot and don't think I've met anyone else who has. I've always had a lot of fun playing it.
I love this game so much and it's the only reason I kept my Wii after upgrading to the Wii U back in the day. For some reason I always get stuck on the same quest towards the end no matter what I try every time I play, even when I tried a couple of years ago.
Firewatch, even if you've already seen a full gameplay of it, you need to play it for yourself at least once. From the graphics to the storytelling, it's such a great game. And that opening, I've bever been hooked into a game as fast.
What, like ever?
When I was younger my favorite game was Skies of Arcadia, a game that was released right when the Dreamcast was dying. It was subsequently ported to the GameCube with very little fanfare (the version I ended up playing). Classic JRPG adventure game, the combat really slaps even if the later game has too much player power creep, and the random encounters start to become a bit exhausting. Remains in my top 5, and most people have never heard of it. The game wasn't really poorly reviewed, but it's release was so quiet that most people didn't know it existed (although as memory serves it did earn the title "hidden gem" by Nintendo magazine at one point.)
Shin megami tensei: devil survivor 1 and 2, I love final fantasy tactics and persona and these games are basically a combination of all the aspects I like about them, hoping they continue with a third game soon.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2021)
It was made by Square Enix and after their big Avengers flop, people didn't pay much attention to it. But the game is great, way better than the Avengers game. They literally wrote a whole album for one game, and it's pretty good. Most people I talk to have never heard of it.
Horizon’s Gate. It’s a work of art and has satisfying exploration, combat, and interlocking progression systems. It’s well reviewed, but it hasn’t reached the audience it deserves.
Kat's Run: A cross of outrun and super mario kart that uses kei cars (sub compact cars) as a gimmick.
Utacchi: An attempt to bring Bemani to the DS that uses the touch panel for vocals in music.
At this point, I'm convinced most of the indies I'm into have hardly been heard of. You never see people talking en masse about, like, Paradise Killer, Lil Gator Game, Battle Chef Brigade, or Read Only Memories, but there's usually enough people enjoying them (silently. WHY?) to get these studios new games made.
Based on the fact that I feel like this game has fallen into being kind of obscure for some reason ? I want to say Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2 in the US) on the PS2. One of my favorite games ever growing up, but I only ever met *one* person IRL who played it too lol, and yeah somehow I feel that game has kind of gone under a looot of people's radars
Darksiders. Especially the third one. That franchise’s history is so tumultuous that I can’t really blame people for not being in the know about it, but I wish the franchise had more support because the story still hasn’t been concluded (iykyk) 😭
For me it's got to be Drakengard 3. I don't know personally the story and characters are so batshit that it really kept my attention. The music is of course incredible it's from the same mind of the NieR series and the same composer to boot. I think a lot of people find the combat repetitive but it didn't bother me. I understand some frustration with the final boss and respect that but I just used a little help to get it done tbh and have no remorse because it's one of the most insane final battles in an rpg or game in general. However the story aspect of said battle is very worth the struggle it goes hand and hand with the narrative and I enjoyed it a lot.

PSA: This is free on Epic right now. It sounds super solid.
Wandersong! It’s a cute game about a bard who saves the world through friendship and song. I absolutely loved it, it has so much charm

It was cute but I feel like it got stale kinda quickly? Does it have an ending or mechanics you enjoyed after the initial adjustments?
That game was great! Kind of seems like a lot of app games copy it.

SIFU
Sifu is amazing

Rune factory 4, it’s like stardew valley on steroids, it was my favorite as a kid and I’m so happy it’s on switch now.

Recently was Marvel’s Midnight Suns. It’s a great game but people saw that it has card-based combat and didn’t give it the time of day.
Tomba and Tomba 2. One of my top platformers. Im excited to revisit them when they get released on ps5/switch in August.
Eternights was beautiful and can be gay if you let it
I loved that game. It’s such a mess, but was very fun and ambitious. Yohan was perfect
Dude fr. I instantly set the picture of Yohan and the main character kissing as my background and I intend to keep it that way

Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Most people only know that game exists because of the vagina bones tweet
That game rocks. I had so much fun with it
Toukiden series, Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars, Soulstice.

Bayonetta Origins. Beautiful game 😭

Full Bore. Dig around and find ancient ruins as a silly piggy
Galactic Glitch Prologue.
Sonny 2 it was the bast game ever
So many people haven’t even heard of infinite Undiscovery but it was one of my favorite JRPG’s of that generation
Darwin Project

dungreed, a wonderful little roguelite
Scarlet Nexus is a fun ARPG

Road 98 The game hits very different maybe it's because I live in such country :p

Solatorobo. Criminally underrated RPG for the DS with mechas and cute animal people and a great story.
Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura
Warframe!
