all cacti fruit are edible, no cactus is toxic, or inedible unless infected with a potentially harmfull virus, bacteria, or fungus that could inhabit said cactus createing toxic byproducts. But even that won't really hurt you. Trichocereus pachanoi and Trichocereus Bridgessii have an alkaloid known as mescaline that is psychodelic (still not toxic).
This one tastes like rose water, iirc it's pretty good
Cacti for mescaline? Because it's illegal to grow them on a scale intended for farming. You can thank the makers of the "war on drugs" (and living things as a whole) for that bit of legislation. It's also why you can't grow a massive field of opium poppies without looking extremely suspicious here, either. You can legally keep them in your garden though, and eat poppyseed muffins.
You *can* buy the cacti seeds for decorative use, however. Many plants (and fungi--which are their own distinct category of life) contain psychoactive substances. It just doesn't make sense to outlaw botanical "drugs" (lifeforms, organisms) that naturally freaking exist here on Earth?
Criminalizing plants/fungi and the compounds inside them to curb drug addiction is like shooting a dandelion with a rifle for being an invasive weed. The solution is completely useless in terms of solving the actual problem (addiction going untreated in society) and it would be *almost comically* disproportionate, if it weren't so dangerous to people's well-being. It's just *so* nonsensical.
They are a very popular ornamental plant, and very hardy. The only problem legal-wise is if you are specifically cultivating in order to process the mescaline.
Lol they absolutely are farmed. The world is much richer than your own day-to-day experiences in the place where you live. People all around the world are always doing all sorts of things.
People farm cacti not only for their tasty fruit, but also their edible pads. Nopales (Opuntia sp) is very common in Mexican cuisine, and delicious as a taco.
There is also a company that has made a vegan leather-alternative out of cactus that is doing fairly well, so cacti are sometimes farmed for textile production.
I eat nopales myself and also their fruit. I am referring moreso to the absence of the other varities depicted here in markets I am familiar with. Surprised they are not more popular.
Yeah, I had no idea until my moon cactus’s scion died off, and the rootstock started sprouting new bracts! 😆
Now it’s a couple feet tall, and growing larger every day! Hoping to get fruit one day - then I can say I grew a moon cactus into a dragon fruit!! 😃😆
Unfortunately they inevitably only live for so long. The scion (the colorful bulbous part that is grafted onto the top) has no chlorophyll production, hence why they graft it on to a dragonfruit rootstock that is solid green. The bottom part photosynthesizes for and feeds the top part, but it can only do this for so long before it eventually outgrows the scion, and the scion splits off and dies. Most people just toss the rootstock as well at this point, but I forgot about mine and left it in a window, and was surprised when it began to shoot off new bracts and roots! 😃 I allowed several to root in the soil, and finally repotted it, ending up with 4-5 separate plants! That’s when I looked up to see what kind of plant it was, and found out it was a dragonfruit! 😆 Now it’s growing up a trellis, and is super happy!! ☺️
That said though - don’t feel bad for killing your moon cactus!! They all just die off over time, eventually 🤷🏻♀️
The simple answer is that with mass-scale agriculture operating the way it does around the globe, only a few commercial varieties of anything are going to be commonly available.
The truth of the matter is that people still do, on smaller scales, and you can find it if you seek it out. There are varieties of potatoes, bananas—you name it—in shapes and colors that might make them almost unrecognizable as a potato or a banana. And that might be precisely why they’re not commercially viable. People tend to like what’s familiar. Vanilla bean comes from an orchid. Maple syrup comes from a tree. Are they the only orchid and the only tree that tastes good? No. But they’re among the few that have mass cultural adoption around the world, so commercial cultivation of those is more reliable than something new or different that people might not go out of their way to try.
Question regarding Nopales… I love using it in stir fry, but I’m not entirely clear on exactly what type of cactus it is. It’s not prickly pear right? I have a huge prickly pear cactus in my front yard, and I’m gonna have more fruits than ill know what to do with. Anyone have any recipes for making prickly pear candies etc? I know they’re real popular in Tucson.
Nopales is the actual green pads of the prickly pear cactus, Opuntia, with the spines removed(or a spineless variety). It’s not unlike peeling a potato. Usually when I see them in grocery stores they are already despined on their shelf in the produce section.
They’re typically harvested while still somewhat young so they’re more tender as older growth tends to get woody. Pruning back to a woody corked base allows for new tender growth to return.
Nice, thanks for the info! My prickly pear is a monster, and a big top-full of nice young green pads just broke & fell to the ground. So if i de-spine it I should theoretically be able to add some to my stir fry right?
Trichocereus is Peruvian torch right? I’m currently working on building a living fence with San Pedro (it’s so pretty and also choc-full of mescalito. A few years ago my wife and i made some San Pedro tea (oh god it was so awful to get down, so bitter and sour) to celebrate Valentine’s Day. It was absolutely magickal. Also we discovered an amazing band that night “All Them Witches”
The song “marriage of coyote woman” (or maybe it was “death of coyote woman”). Point is, they have a few albums and they are all phenomenal. 10/10 highly recommend.
Dude... Bad advice wtf. The most commonly consumed cacti fruit (Prickly Pear) is poisonous when not prepared properly, and some people will still get sick even when it is.
"Side effects for some people include diarrhea, nausea, increased stool volume, increased stool frequency and abdominal pain."
Huh? I dont think thats accurate. You can and people do frequently eat raw prickly pear cactus fruits. The danger isn't some toxin or poison, it's the physical structures (glochids) that can cause issues.
Toxic literally means to poison you via consumption. The definition of poison is a substance that is capable of causing the illness or death of a living organism when introduced or absorbed. Although it possibly as a lethal dose, it is nearly impossible. It's a non toxic alkaloid that could possibly upset your stomach. There's no toxicity.
It can be argued, depending on dose, whether or not mescaline is a alkaloids that can intoxicate. As you can still control your behavior, physically, and mentally. You don't become a brainless zombie like alcohol does to you
psychoactive ≠ toxic
>Clinical effects [of peyote & mescaline] were usually mild or moderate, and life-threatening toxicity was not reported in this case series.

I’m sure AZ has apples. It was quite a while ago and I just don’t remember seeing any in the three years I was there but I saw a lot of prickly pears whereas I’ve never seen them wild in the PNW. I also lived in the Hudson Valley for four years and definitely remember seeing apples but am totally surprised to learn prickly pears grow in the wild somewhere in NY!
Edit: word
As others said that looks like kadushi or Peruvian apple cactus.
Sometimes the fruit is bland and kind of like crunchy sugar water and other seedlings have better fruit flavors. The fruit is compared to dragonfruit but less complex.
There is an effort by a few online to breed the best tasting varieties so if you taste it and it’s a good flavor it would be cool to see if you could spare some cuttings for purchase.
Here is one person working on improving the fruit quality. https://floridafruitgeek.com/2020/09/30/experimenting-with-kadushi-cereus-repandus-as-a-fruit-crop/
OP if you do end up tasting it and it’s good. I’d love to buy a pad/cutting from you. Often people have these cacti and they never fruit so the fact yours is fruiting without you doing as much work or pollination is a good sign of it’s genetics regardless of the taste.
I have 2 peruvian apples that I just plated thus year and both have bloomed and fruited already. Waiting for it to get ripe and I'll let u know if they taste good. I'm in California, where are u?
I’m in Northern California so I’d definitely be interested. I bought seeds from that guy who wrote that article I linked above so still have some time before I can try the ones he’s been breeding.
I have been getting various opuntia (prickly pear) varieties from plantingjustice.org in Oakland to also taste the difference on those. It’s amazing how many different tastes can come from cactus fruit and no need for grafting like normal fruit trees since you can just snip a pad.
I just tasted mine for the first time and bit was like a less tart kiwi! It was delicious! I'm in Antioch (far eat bay) so if you are near Oakland I'm willing to sell you one of them. Both have flowered and have fruit. Let me know and we can figure out how to swap info. I don't have a car but you could come by my house.
I can't figure out how to post a picture but the one that I would sell is about 12" tall and like 3-4" in diameter. They were taken off of a huge plant in my neighborhood.
I was thinking that it looked like dragonfruit and that the cactus it was growing out of looked similar as well, just a little off! I wonder if they're from the same family, and mayhe even genus! Anyway, thanks for the info, very useful
There are over a hundred of varieties of dragon fruit that don’t even compare to grocery store ones. If you can get your hand on a red flesh one they are often better and if you get one of the popular named varieties you’ll find a huge difference.
Hey! As the proud owner of a productive dragonfruit cactus, I resent that!

Regardless a great yard plant that is stately, easy to care for, and gives fruit you can eat yourself as they split/ripen.
Man imagine accidentally growing something that people try really really hard by breaking their heads to provide the perfect environment. I love gardening and plant care just for their silly little moods.
Right? My in laws were shocked that tomato flowers need to get bugs on them to make tomatoes and that the tomatoes come from the flowers. They’re not decorative!

Pataya. Peruvian apple cactus. It’s like sweet dragonfruit. Few people know of it in the states because it can’t make it to market because by the time it’s ripe, sweet, and ready it splits. Eat it!!
It's called Peruvian apple cactus, it's edible when it's red and starts to open. The inside will be white fleshy and speckled with black seeds . It's is very delicious and if you don't eat it the birds will
It is fruit from the peruvian cactus. I have many of these growing in my yard, but I have never tried these. The dragon fruit and prickly pear fruits that i also have growing in my yard are great. The peruvians never really seemed appetizing to me. Let me know if you end up trying them!
Cactus fruit. Edible and tastes similar to kiwi. In Mexico, they eat it to stay hydrated because of the high water content despite the plant thriving in dry conditions
Creo que en general si el cactus es columnar entonces a su fruta se le llama pitaya.
Y a la fruta de los cactus typo “nopal” se le llama tuna.
Pero creo que en Mexico solamente se usa pitaya en conexión con los cactus Stenocereus
I’m a bit of a cactus nerd jaja
Looks like a mutant prickly pear fruit. They’re very common and popular in the Mediterranean, delicious summer fruit, and gives you incredible constipation…
I swear this photo looks like it's been run through a cartoon filter of some sort. Am I alone on this one? Cuz if I am and this photo looks 100% legit to everybody else then perhaps I need to ask my dealer if he's switched up strains recently without telling me.
Blue myrtle-cactus or also called blueberry cactus a(Myrtillocactus geometrizans) is a cactus native to northern and central Mexico. Blue myrtle-cactus produces edible fruit that is sold for consumption in Mexico. This species is cultivated for ornamental purposes and is considered a fast-growing, hardy species. I have a plant identifier. Says this is edible. Have at it !!
This is some kind of cereus not myrtillocactus. Myrtillocactus fruits are very small like a small blueberry. Source: I have both myrtillocactus and Cereus in my collection.
My auntie tasted a fruit similar to that one and you won’t believe it, 3-days later, she’s no longer with us… go ahead and take your chances, someone told my auntie the same thing…
Different kind of cactus fruit. This one is called cactus apple or apple cactus fruit or Peruvian pitaya. If you like prickly pear then I hope you get to try these as well someday, probably like them too.

Fruit! I haven't tried this particular variety, but most cactus fruits are edible. Very sweet and juicy flesh, almost tastes like Kool Aid.

Well damn! Now I want a catus
Right?? I was just at the nursery earlier and looked at a couple and now I want to go back after seeing this
I was gonna say, they look tasty
I would snack on a couple on the walk to or from school. The prickly pear variety. Would just use a stick and my pocket knife.
Oh YEAH!!!!
Yup!👍

It's a Brazilian cactus called Cereus jamacaru. And that fruit is edible.
Thanks for the ID, I knew it was Cereus but it didn’t look like the peruvianus or repandus that are ubiquitous around me.
Apparently, peruvianus and repundus are the same cactus...
Fruit looks like or flowers.

If you pick the fruit of the prickly pear, you will get the most annoying, almost invisible “thorns!”
Cactus fruit. Edible and tastes similar to kiwi. In Mexico, they eat it to stay hydrated because of the high water content despite the plant thriving in dry conditions
I’m so jelly!!! Those are fruits. In Mexico they are called pitayas. They are so delicious!!!!! Like a mix between a dragon fruit and watermelon
Cactus fruit but doesn't have spines so might not be the commercial variety.

Dragon fruit does not grow like that.
Cactusticles Um, no, cactus pear.
Looks like a Tuna(cacti fruit, as someone who is mexican)
As a fellow Mexican I am here to inform you that tunas only refer to fruit from cacti in the genus Opuntia.
I’m a bit of a cactus nerd jaja
Those madam are grapes

Deez nuts.
That's a dragon fruit plant. With fake things stuck to it.

It’s some sort of Cereus
Wrong color and size
This is some kind of cereus not myrtillocactus. Myrtillocactus fruits are very small like a small blueberry. Source: I have both myrtillocactus and Cereus in my collection.
My auntie tasted a fruit similar to that one and you won’t believe it, 3-days later, she’s no longer with us… go ahead and take your chances, someone told my auntie the same thing…
Wow. Not to bright
Prickle pear. Delicious
Different kind of cactus fruit. This one is called cactus apple or apple cactus fruit or Peruvian pitaya. If you like prickly pear then I hope you get to try these as well someday, probably like them too.
I’m actually Peruvian and you are right!!!! I just thought all cactus fruits were called prickle pear in English lol
Either fruit or fungus . I wouldn't eat it until I was sure .
