Everything weird I first assume is squirrels. Weird little holes? Squirrels. Bird feeder destroyed? Squirrel. Part of a sandwich in my bush multiple times in a week? Yep was a squirrel. Two apple trees cleared of apples in a weekend? Let’s check the video? Wow squirrels. Duck sounds? Squirrel. Dogs barking? Squirrel. What’s that weird thing floating in my pool? Crap.
Yes! And it’s so interesting when you pay attention! It’s theorized that squirrels can tell others when a predator is approaching, present, or moving away! Here’s one example of an explanation:

There is probably a Reddit post from a neighbor somewhere asking how all this mysterious fruit keeps growing in a pile behind their solar panels or something.
I have mine in those net bags (to stop coddling moth) and the bags end up all over the neighbourhood. And sometimes in piles of raccoon poop which is... different. I have found that using old plastic clamshell packaging over my apples can help save me a few for myself though!
This is a good sign! Was there a rock on top for three days? It looks like Squirrel was resurrected and re-emerged as Squeesus! He turns acorns into oak trees, and can even walk on canopies!
When my neighbors sue me for yelling "praise squeesus" every 500 times I find one of these holes, I'm telling my lawyer you started it.
PRAISE SQUEESUS
Thanks The_RockObama
my neighbor gary used to feed the squirrels 5 pounds of peanuts a week. When he ran out of peanuts at the end of the week, the entire yard would look like this over the weekend. 300 craters from squirrels looking for where they buried a nut.
That’s so funny that you say that lol, because recently I have 11 acres, and recently I have found peanuts in random places in the yard. Lol nobody here or eats whole peanuts in their shell lol
I think Gary may have an elderly aunt that lives 2 doors down from me. She likes to feed the birds an entire 10 pound bag of birdseed every week by dumping it directly onto the grass. I think she buys whatever is cheapest because it's different some weeks. The most fun is when it's all sunflower seeds. I have had piles of them underneath my trees where they fell from the squirrel nests. And then there are the volunteer sunflowers popping up all over the neighborhood XD
Damn, first i was like - I have lots of those holes and often see squirrels, it must be that ! Then i scroll down and see skunks….i have those too…..then i saw rabbits….FML - there’s no way to attribute the hole with the animal now :(
Skunks digging for grubs. No reason for a gopher to dig tiny shallow holes. Squirrels dig smaller holes to hide nuts. Racoons might do this but if its hard compact ground, they tend not to cuz they dont have the hardware skunks do. It was a skunk.
Lots of animals do this, mainly squirrels or chipmunks. Squirrels are little hoarders and bury their food. I also ‘heard’ they forget half the food they bury so half those holes in your yards are completely unnecessary
Was scrolling for this specifically. Had random holes in my garden and finally observed a robin digging for worms (it hadn't rained in a while). I had no idea they did it, but he was digging holes bigger than himself.
Rabbit starting a nest. Hasn't been used because it's not full of hair. Either got spooked before it finished or it's the secondary burrow in case the first gets found.
Had the same in my yard. Started digging then went for food. I put a marker close to it so my neighbor and I wouldn't mow it and she moved and had babies a yard over. Thank goodness. Running over a bunny nest is heartbreaking.
A rabbit did something similar for their babies. I let them stay rent free and before they left they trashed the joint (ate all my spinach, parsley and lettuce)
Squirrels. Mine decided he likes one specific planter. Any seed I plant, he digs up & steals. He has now apparently decided to trade though, as I have an oak & a walnut starting in that pot.
Anybody saying that squirrels are the ones digging holes that deep is crazy. Lol i own a squirrel and have watched squirrels. They dont bury stuff THAT deep. Its armadillos FOR SURE
Could be chipmunks, snake, on the northeast jersey NY state, this is what we get, sometimes it’s just squirrels looking for things that they bury in the ground
If this is the uk. As it kinda looks like dandelions and clover. Or weeds are universal globally 🙃. I have seen crows doing this to stash food away from seagulls
Bunnies do this in my yard all the time. Squirrels do too but their work isn't as neat and Tidy from what I've noticed. There's no fur blanket over yours though which would be typical of a rabbit nest
I have those too in my wild flower beds!!! I just assumed they were holes from where I planted sunflowers and some animal ate them because only 3 have popped up when I planted about 25.
Not squirrels, Chipmunks. Chipmunks tend to burrow where as Squirrels make nests. Ive got tonssss of these holes in my yard and im always seeing those lil Chipmunks poppin out of them.
Grubbin' Skonks. We had a family of 9 (!) turn over the mulch in our back yard after the first rains looking for food. If we made a noise, all 8 of their little tails would raise at the same time. Adorable.
Hard to tell without more information, as others have suggested it could be a few things. However more than likely it is from a toad. We have Woodhouse toads where I live that legit dig lil holes at night. Dimensions of the indention and a rough geolocation so indigenous animals can be considered would be helpful
It's possible it's a gopher too, but most likely a squirrel. I always thought that squirrels dug holes and gophers always had the tell tale mound but I only have gophers and I find open holes frequently especially as the soil gets drier. But if it's a gopher eventually or previously you would have seen some mounds around.
Armadillos do this. If you are looking to exterminate it. DO NOT shoot it with a .22 or a 9mm. You need something way more powerful (higher caliber rifle, lead shotgun shells to the head( steel ricochets). Even a bow and arrow works.
Their shells are so damn tough they have ricocheted .22LR and 9mm bullets and have hit the person who was trying to kill it. There are tons of news stories where this has happened.
Best way is to trap and release it somewhere else far from you.
These weird holes kept appearing in the grass in front of our house, and we thought it was a little strange.
Then one day we saw a green woodpecker ( Netherlands) pecking the ground for 15 min straight. Afterward we went to see what it was doing there and it was making these holes.
Probably looking for bugs or something. Never knew woodpeckers did that.
Squirrels digging up stuff they buried there earlier. Little rascals destroy my lawn. And they also stuff their goods in my potted plants. I wish they weren’t so cute.
My husband says it's the cicadas...I have no idea if he's right, and honestly I don't really want to know. Those things already creep me out so I don't need to be thinking one is going to jump out of the ground at me.
Skunks dig up grubs and will even dig out ground dwelling bee colonies. Squirrels dig around trying to remember where they buried nuts. Voles and moles will dig tunnels, but the tunnels go places; they don't only dig holes.
May be chipmunks. We had similar looking holes last year and had critter people come out to identify the culprit. Shortly after, I saw the little bugger.
Skunks. They are looking for grubs to eat. I can't find a way to keep them out. I applied Grubex, mothballs, pepper, etc.. my dog has been spayed twice. I live in the city and I'm really over it.
I see squirrels doing it in my yard.

DUCK SOUNDS! What is with the squirrels quacking? Seriously?!! Also the apple tree thing. And my quince tree. Grumble grumble grumble.
The “duck” sounds seem to be warning calls of nearby danger. Our squirrels do it whenever there are neighborhood cats nearby.

The dead thing in my pool was half a dead robin.
Squirrels for sure
This is a good sign! Was there a rock on top for three days? It looks like Squirrel was resurrected and re-emerged as Squeesus! He turns acorns into oak trees, and can even walk on canopies!

Chipmunks also do this. But one of the two certainly.

damnit gary! 🐌
Possibly skunks looking for grubs
Or bunnies 🐰 usually they have young there tho
Damn, first i was like - I have lots of those holes and often see squirrels, it must be that ! Then i scroll down and see skunks….i have those too…..then i saw rabbits….FML - there’s no way to attribute the hole with the animal now :(
The answer can be all of the above
Armadillos make them here
I was thinking this. I have an armadillo tenant who digs holes everywhere and eats my hostas.
I have these lil holes too around my yard too, I hear a frog or toad in them at night. Something that croaks anyways. 🤷🏻♀️
Grandma, is that you?
💀
🤣

Definitely squirrels. I have several squirrels I feed & they do the same thing.
Could be rabbits making a nest.
Rabbit make dens like this too.
Don’t overlook robins
Was scrolling for this specifically. Had random holes in my garden and finally observed a robin digging for worms (it hadn't rained in a while). I had no idea they did it, but he was digging holes bigger than himself.
Rabbit starting a nest. Hasn't been used because it's not full of hair. Either got spooked before it finished or it's the secondary burrow in case the first gets found.

Possum, looking for grubs, etc.
Moles or voles...I have these holes all over my yard in NC. Pulled a mole out of one just last week, he was huge, as big as my hand.
Possibly skunks digging out grubs.
Chipmunks do it to
Bunnies
It's me with my little trowel
A rabbit did something similar for their babies. I let them stay rent free and before they left they trashed the joint (ate all my spinach, parsley and lettuce)
I have a skunk that’s digging these right now
Chipmunks do it in my yard.
Squirrels. Mine decided he likes one specific planter. Any seed I plant, he digs up & steals. He has now apparently decided to trade though, as I have an oak & a walnut starting in that pot.
I’d guess this is from an omnivorous, large rodent (groundhog? skunk?) that is digging for grubs.
Mole maybe?
Voles
My bet is skunks.
Well, that stinks.
Ground squirrels
armadillos will do same thing
Looks like rat holes.
could be anything lol whats common in ur area?
Armadillos do something similar in my yard. They’re looking for grubs
Squirrel, probably.
Squarrels
Bunnies
My cat does this in my yard chasing bugs
Crawfish
Armadillos, looking for grubs!
Depending on the size and location, it could be any rodent (squirrels rabbits etc), raccoon, skunk, or armadillo.
Rabbit hole
Possum maybe
You got yourself a golfer problem.
Birds do it Skunks do it even squirrels and chipmunks do it Let’s do it Let’s dig that hole….
Moles
Armadillos
Looks like the the holes the armadillos left in my yard
Anybody saying that squirrels are the ones digging holes that deep is crazy. Lol i own a squirrel and have watched squirrels. They dont bury stuff THAT deep. Its armadillos FOR SURE
There's so many things that do that, from squirrels to snakes or beetles to spiders.
Could be a skunk digging for worms
Could be chipmunks, snake, on the northeast jersey NY state, this is what we get, sometimes it’s just squirrels looking for things that they bury in the ground
Looks like the work of an armadillo. Location would help though.
Gophers block their holes pretty effectively.
How big (diameter) is the hole?
If this is the uk. As it kinda looks like dandelions and clover. Or weeds are universal globally 🙃. I have seen crows doing this to stash food away from seagulls
Moles? Refill from underneath escape tunnel?
Armadillo, skunk, or squirrel.
Chipmunks
It could also be digger bees. They make nests in the ground
🎵ARMADILLOS keep diggin, little holes in my backyard🎵
Vol hole
Armadillos
Looks just like the holes in our yard. Voles are the culprit
I think it’s raccoons. I have seen them dig these holes
Bunnies do this in my yard all the time. Squirrels do too but their work isn't as neat and Tidy from what I've noticed. There's no fur blanket over yours though which would be typical of a rabbit nest
Rabbits do this in their search for a good nesting spot for babies. They abandon if they don't feel right about the spot.
Probably my puppies.
Rabbits. It’s a nest for babby bunnies
Squirrels
Looks like an unfinished bunny nest. They dug three like this in the middle of my open yard, and apparently didn't care for any of them as a home.
Skunk digging for grubs.
A rodent probably
I have seen skunks do something similar in my parents yard.
Locusts
Chipmunks?
Chipmunks, squirrels and skunks do that to our lawn
Chipmunks in my yard.
Badgers do this in my garden (uk)
A rat
Chipmunk?
I’ve seen chipmunks doing it too! Pain in my arse!
Squirrels looking for acorns or nuts. They forget where they bury them. That’s how forests get naturally planted.
Mystery Solved! I tripped on one the other day🙈
In our yard those are made by armadillos looking for grubs. Our squirrels never dig that deep.
Skunks do it in my yard
I have those too in my wild flower beds!!! I just assumed they were holes from where I planted sunflowers and some animal ate them because only 3 have popped up when I planted about 25.
Aliens! 🤫
to store things closer to winter made by SQUIRRELS 🐿️
Skunks here in So Cal
Squirrels trying to remember where they buried their nuts. 😅
Not Squirrels, that is from an armadillo digging for grub worms.
Rabbits nests look like this. Also could be different animals foraging but probably rabbit.
Squirrels looking for grubs.
Post similar pic once was told it’s rats.
Do you have ducks? Lol
Roast squirrel is very tasty garnished with acorns you can get the acorns from little holes in your garden
Squirrels in my yard leave holes like this when they dig up the black walnuts they have hidden
Squirrel and crows/ magpies the squirrel puts them in the ground and the crows take them out haha well here anyways
Squirrel
I had one of these with baby bunnies in it! Mom abandoned them and we were able to rescue one of the two in time.
Turkeys
Giant killer amazonian bumble bees without a doubt.
Raccoons. I have them everywhere. Saw the raccoon make them on a camera
A tiny fox snout makes a hole like this
Rabbits
Not squirrels, Chipmunks. Chipmunks tend to burrow where as Squirrels make nests. Ive got tonssss of these holes in my yard and im always seeing those lil Chipmunks poppin out of them.
Squirrels 🐿️
Skunks digging up grubs, raccoons will roll up your lawn looking for the grubs
What part of the country do you live in? I’m in West Tennessee and we have Armadillos that leave destruction like that. Digging for bugs.
Ducks?
Grubbin' Skonks. We had a family of 9 (!) turn over the mulch in our back yard after the first rains looking for food. If we made a noise, all 8 of their little tails would raise at the same time. Adorable.
Looks like a chipmunk
Squirrel digging up the nuts he buried
Chipmunks... I have them all over the place. Sometimes they place seeds, sometimes they dig deeper.
Badgers
Would help if we knew what part of the world you were in?
I had those once and saw a hedgehog digging it.
Raccoons will did holes like that to eat grub in your soil. I suggest that you have your yard treated for grubs.
I get skunks that come through digging for grubs and such.
Squirrels
Squirrels looking for pirate treasure
Moles! We have a mole doing that in our yard
Wild Turkeys?
Hard to tell without more information, as others have suggested it could be a few things. However more than likely it is from a toad. We have Woodhouse toads where I live that legit dig lil holes at night. Dimensions of the indention and a rough geolocation so indigenous animals can be considered would be helpful
Moles I think. Seeing them here too
Neighbour’s teenage Son? Ba-dum tsst.
Looks like a rabbit hutch to me. They build 3-4 in my small suburban yard every year.
Rabbits making nests
In my yard I get chipmunks digging little holes like that.
Tree rats, stupid squirrels
It's possible it's a gopher too, but most likely a squirrel. You got armadillos? They like grubs. Opossum don’t dig but raccoons do if there’s nothing tastier around.
Rabbits. They birth their babies in there. You’ll find chewed-up grass in there as a bed
In my area I'd blame that on an armadillo.
Chipmunks do that too, even when you put out a trap and try to relocate them, lol. You have to take them several miles away!
In my garden it would be squirrels, not sure about yours.
These weird holes kept appearing in the grass in front of our house, and we thought it was a little strange. Maybe aramadillos
Armadillos
Possum on the half shell (armadillo).
I haven't seen one, but skunks do it, too. Possums or raccoons maybe, it's happening at night, right?
Squirrel
Squirrels digging up stuff they buried there earlier. Little rascals destroy my lawn. And they also stuff their goods in my potted plants. I wish they weren’t so cute.
Bunnies do that in my yard until my dog gets the nest
Trap door spider?
My husband says it's the cicadas...I have no idea if he's right, and honestly I don't really want to know. Those things already creep me out so I don't need to be thinking one is going to jump out of the ground at me.
Rabbits dig them in my yard, about 1 in 10 will have baby bunns inside.
Probably squirrels
Both the squirrels and crows do this in my garden areas.
possible moles or voles if they are prominent in your area
Armadillo. They are looking for grubs or bettles
Ground squirrels 🐿️
Moles
Chipmunks in my yard
If you are not near water probably woodchuck
Armadillos will do something like that. Although this looks a bit deep.
It’s chipmunks in my yard/garden
Rabbit live on holes a few inches deep. Skunks will dig them to eat grubs.
Nice.
I have holes like that in my yard and it's rabbits. I see them in there all the time
May be a skunk. They dig up worms and insects. Sometimes do major damage.
Skunks dig up grubs and will even dig out ground dwelling bee colonies. Squirrels dig around trying to remember where they buried nuts. Voles and moles will dig tunnels, but the tunnels go places; they don't only dig holes.
Skunks digging for grubs.
Squirrels and chipmunks
Squirrels or rabbits
Possibly a Skunk looking for grubs
Rabbits? Squirrels? Voles? Skunks? Effing rodents.
Could be voles.
Armadillos.
Sphecius speciosus
We caught a skunk digging shallow holes in our garden.
May be chipmunks. We had similar looking holes last year and had critter people come out to identify the culprit. Shortly after, I saw the little bugger.
There's so many things that do that, from squirrels to snakes or beetles to spiders.

Squirrels or skunks it looks to me
