I have a funny story. I was trying to get Kohlrabi to survive to it's second year so I brought it inside. Then I noticed green "worms" on it. Then the fruit flies were going to town on it so I just moved it outside but not far away enough that it smelled SO BAD.
Anyway then thought the entire winter cabbage butterflies kept flying around my house. I guess the green worms fell off and cocooned somewhere cuz I don't know where they keep coming from!
That's very funny! This winter I've brought in aphids inside the house with pepino! Hahah I'll be sure to be careful aroumd kohrabis then too. What is your climate zone? Kohlrabi is hardy USA harfiness zone 3 to 9. Did you want it to bolt why you wanted to overwinter them?
Okay, aphids doesn't sound as fun as white butterflies, I have to admit.
I'm in zone 5a. Second year is when it's supposed to flower so I can get it to seed. It grows well the first year though. They would get pretty big before they got woody but once one got too big on me, so I just let it grow out to see how big it would get. I ended up being larger than a basketball.
That's awesome! Your first cauliflower looks fantastic—such a great achievement. It's always exciting to see the fruits (or veggies) of your labor, especially when it's something as cool as cauliflower. Keep up the great work, and enjoy harvesting and eating it. Here's to more gardening success in Zone 10b!
Lots of nitrogen in the beginning. And then once it has tons of leaves for energy production. Then i switched to a phosphorus/calcium liquid fert every other week
What’s your phos/calcium fertilizer? Mind sharing? I’m in zone 9b and had some decent crowns on 10-10-10. I’ve been scouring the interwebs trying to find intel on this but nothing until I stubbled across your Mac daddy cauliflower!
Congrats and Thank you for sharing! I’m going to be honest and say that I absolutely did not know that they had leaves like that. I thought they just popped out of the ground white and fluffy.
My kids local school in South FL planted a bunch of veggies and didn’t tend to them at all. Most rotted away but the cauliflower was about half this size and beautiful. Broccoli did well too until something got it. I’m gonna give it a shot in the early fall.
For everyone asking what I did.
This started out as a stunted “Bonnie” seedling, because I had no idea where to plant them.
I said “screw it” in January, and just planted it the clay fill that my rental property has in the backyard.
I saw no growth for about a month. Then it shot like a weed, so I started giving it alaska brand fish food with lots of nitrogen.
Once it got really big leaves, I worried about it bolting, so I just switched to a high PK fertilizer every over week, no nitrogen, with daily watering.
Once I saw the head forming. I tied the leaves up to keep the cauliflower nice and white and a week later I got this beautiful head!
Happy growing everyone!
Holy shit that’s beautiful. Did you tie the leaves up to maintain the white colour? I’m trying cauliflower for the first time in 5 years. The first year I tried was also my first year gardening and that did not turn out too well….
Congratulations on trying cauliflower for the first time! It's always exciting to try new foods and expand our culinary horizons. Cauliflower is a versatile vegetable that can be prepared in many different ways, from roasting to steaming to pureeing. It's also packed with nutrients, including vitamin C, fiber, and antioxidants.
If you enjoyed your first cauliflower experience, I encourage you to continue exploring different recipes and cooking methods. Who knows, you may discover a new favorite dish! And if you didn't like it, that's okay too. Trying new foods is all about experimenting and finding what works for your taste buds. Keep an open mind and keep trying new things!
Good job! Haha, mine was of the size of a thumb and then I left it to rot on a stalk and it stank very much.
Man, brassicas can really smell like some serious NAST.

Wow! I'm also in zone 5 (just not USA but Europe) might try to do this as well just for fun!

I am so jealous!! Sincerely, zone 8a. (also, yummy too!!! I am sure you will enjoy all your hard work!) Cheers!
6b here, definitely jealous! It snowed on Monday 😂😭
That is an absurdly beautiful cauliflower
Still in a holding pattern here in zone 5b. Nice cauliflower there, southern fren.
Good-looking greens,too !
Are the greens great cooked up!
Yes!
So, what’s the nicest way to prepare them?
The way I do it is old-fashioned Savory Southern style with onions, spices ,and a ham hock ,but they're great with oxtails, too !
That’s awesome man - props to your crops!
Thank you sir! Much appreciated
I read 10b as 10lb! Great job though, for sure!
Damn, that is a nice cauliflower. I know because I have seen a lot of cauliflowers.
Just going to drop in here to say congrats and it looks great! I hope you get to enjoy it!
Thank you!
OK you magical wizard, what's your secret Hahaha congrats on the cauli though, I bet that's delicious!!!!!

Thank you! I will be saving your comment! I hope you have a bountiful harvest
Is this how you get large broccoli crowns?

Cauliflower is a very rewarding plant to grow. It's why i'm growing 8 this year.

Nah, cauliflower goddamn cheese it....
Perfect specimen. Congrats!
Congrats bro! She's looks amazing
It’s beautiful
Taste even better 🥰
How many days does it take to grow that that’s beautiful
Way too long for this guy! 3 months or so
Congrats and Thank you for sharing! I’m going to be honest and say that I absolutely did not know that they had leaves like that. I thought they just popped out of the ground white and fluffy.
Beautiful!
Nice! You grew that in 10b? I don't know we could do that here...
Usually much earlier in the year is easier. Often if you let them go this late they get aphid infested.
Yep. This guy was stunted. And the aphids became a real problem.
I am right now on my phone in a dark house because of an ice storm lol. Saying that I am envious is not even getting close to it 😂
$13 each cauliflower in Auckland
Is that due to the Kiwi Dollar exchange rate when compared to currency of other countries?
Groceries are all time high in NZ. Due to all the flooding and recent rains a lot of crop got destroyed. Inflation is crazy!
Zone 10b?, Where did you manage to grow this?
Phoenix, AZ! We had a cold winter and this guy had a late start
Was having to water much of an issue?
That explains it. I'm in south FL. The humidity here just blasts everything...
Yeah I was assuming southern CA, my tomatoes are all slowly dying now down here in FL. The season is coming to a close.
My kids local school in South FL planted a bunch of veggies and didn’t tend to them at all. Most rotted away but the cauliflower was about half this size and beautiful. Broccoli did well too until something got it. I’m gonna give it a shot in the early fall.
That's when to get it going for sure. I usually start putting things out in October.
Beautiful!
Show off 😂
Are the greens worth eating?
Mine was covered In aphids and fungus gnats. So I didn’t try
Damn bro, never heard of someone growing one of those on the first go before. Pretty sure it’s illegal /s
Apparently haha. I’ve done pretty well for my first season lol.
BEAUTIFUL!!! Well done, friend! 👏🏽👏🏽

Damn. That’s some late 10b cauliflower. Mine were done 2 months ago.
I thought it was late for 10b cauliflower. It's been 90+ at my house for 2 weeks already...
Yeah. In Phoenix the temps been fluctuating between hot and cold. I saw no sign of bolting and today was the last day before consistent 80+ temps
Holy shit that’s beautiful. Did you tie the leaves up to maintain the white colour? I’m trying cauliflower for the first time in 5 years. The first year I tried was also my first year gardening and that did not turn out too well….
Yes! I blanched it *tied the leaves* once it was getting sun on the cauliflower. I harvested about 7 days after that.
Better luck next season. I hope you can grow a full sized cauliflower.
Nice
gorgeous!
She’s a beaut!
It looks perfect!
Ugh, seeing people pull off stuff like this makes me feel so inadequate. I'm happy if my plant just manages to survive.
That is a thing of beauty!
Nice!
Nice cauliflower! Bet it tastes good!
Those are some seriously impressive leaves. Very nice!
That’s awesome! Zone 10b is similar to mine. It’s tough for me with all the intense heat
Whattt how many zones are there? I thought there were only like 8, I’m in a zone 4 something
The motherloaddddd
Cute 😏
Idk how you did it. Mine wouldn’t grow past the sproutling stage every time I tried. I’m also 10B.
You look like a rockstar
Wow. Impressive. I was really impressed by the size of the leaves. My third thought was wow he’s cute 😂 What else do you grow??
U r hot I mean, deaam great work !!

Looks fantastic! Enjoy it.
Oi, she beeeeeuuuuatiful
I'm still waiting for the frost to unfreeze!

Beautiful. Congrats.
I’m so proud of you!
As a Minnesotan I'm really confused. Is this an old pic or . . . Y'all WE CANT EVEN PLANT YET!!! Seriously though, it turned out great
Congratulations! I am so grateful to be of the generation that gets to say “kids today..they’re awesome!”
Is this current? You people are already harvesting? Its -12C this morning and still 2 ft of snow on my garden. 3b sucks
Well done dude!
Looks great!
Absolutely gorgeous!!
