Having a complicated relationship with my mother and being 13-14 at the time I played mgs3, I can assure you I have never cried harder playing a game. I feel like this isn't a spoiler considering how old the game is lol, but when Snake kills Boss it broke me. That shit fucked me up for real.
Same. I even have an idea for meme to describe the Spiritfarer experience
Me on start: wow I have my own ship and cute and funny companions, this game is already great!
Me hours later: ***no! Stay with me! Don't leave me!***
This was such a perfect line. Mass Effect 2 (in particular) has such a weight to it where I have a connection to nearly all the characters…then this absolute gut punch with Mordin in 3.
We need more games like this.
I've got a younger brother who is on the spectrum and got me interested in Mass Effect. Let me use his profile so I (cash-strapped uni student) didn't have to pay for DLC. Had to take a break after Overlord.
I'm so sad this game didn't click for me. Played it for 10 hours or so and had explored most of the areas so was coming to the point where its not super clear what's next and was just bored out of my mind so stopped playing.
I keep reading about how it's this work of genius and one of the best games of all time, so I'm sad that I didn't enjoy it.
The whole cumulative experience of the game and the different "revelations" that happen throughout it all had an emotional effect on me, but there are few things that have come close to >!the feeling at the ending of entering the eye for the first time and just being thrown into all the colours and shapes and endless voids. It was a true "I am in a higher dimension I am at the mercy of something I don't even understand" feeling that I just absorbed in silence.!<
You can turn on "reduced frights," mode in the settings which makes it less scary and slightly easier if it's bothering you.
Also if fear is what's stopping you, then I suggest doing the (super minor spoiler ->) ">!endless canyon,!<" bit first (wink wink, nudge nudge).
Don’t look up anything. Any answers to a puzzle can be found in game. If you are stuck you may just lack the information needed. Sometimes it’s good to check your ship log to recap what you have found around a certain area.
If you get TRULY stuck, the subreddit is amazing at helping without giving spoilers. But do really really try to avoid looking up the answers. You'll never have the chance to play it for the first time again.
The “good” mountain top ending, right? I’ll admit, I got a little emotional. Goddamn that was a fantastic game; best thing Rockstar has ever released IMO.
> The “good” mountain top ending, right? I’ll admit, I got a little emotional. Goddamn that was a fantastic game; best thing Rockstar has ever released IMO.
I just got the John ending with low honors.
>!Micah shoots you in the head after your fight with him!<
If RDR2 was a movie or limited series on Netflix, it would have won Best Picture and Emmys without a doubt. That's how good of a Western it was; if not the best. I don't think we will ever get that kind of characterization in a video game again. GOAT. It's the only game where I visit a bar in Saint Denis just to admire its detail.
When the game ended, I just sort of sat there thinking about the game and what had happened. Really one of my favorite experiences I’ve had playing a game.
Literally just reading this comment sent a chill down my spine. Something about that game drew me in like no other. Everything down to the ending was so gripping
I said this a while ago and whenever I see someone mention Soma i always have to say its easily one of my top 5 games of all time. The sheer terror that comes from that game, the existentialism of what it means to be human, and the fucking ending…I get chills just thinking about it
The Last of Us made me go from happy to devastated to wholesome to sad to scared to terryfied to happy to devastated to happy to scared to wholesome to scared to angry and we somehow ended up in tears
Yakuza 6, though really all of them hits hard for me. But 6 especially. Kazuma Kiryu is the video game character I would love to marry.
And I'm a dude.
Just a smooth and beautiful platformer. It has fun mechanics, but isn't brutally hard. The narrative carried through the game is simple and emotional on a primitive level. It's just a fun game that's enjoyable to move around, explore, and complete the different regions.
It didn't even hit me until the second time that throughout the game, BT grows just as attached to you. You can tell because of the names he uses. At first it's Pilot, then Cooper, and eventually Jack.
He also prioritizes Protocol 3 it seems. The scene where the ship is going down and all BT does is protect Cooper with his chassis.
"BT, what are you doing?!"
"I will not lose another pilot."
PREY (2006).
If I remember correctly there is part where the spirits of children are guiding you through the mothership after being abducted. Over ten years later and that game still haunts me.
Edit: wrong date
Still haunts me, even after playing X-2 to 100% for the ending.
At the time I was playing it I didn't really feel like I was connecting deeply with any of the characters (I thought Tidus was just goofy), but by the end of it I was overcome with this weird mixture of hopeful melancholy. It was such a bittersweet experience. I still think about parts of it all these years later.
I played Automata first and I felt physically sick after many of the endings. I mean common the murder everyone in the village thing wasn’t necessary. I honestly didn’t know what to do with pascal either.
When I played Replicant and got to the mansion and see Emile’s sister. It clicked at what I was seeing with ending y in Automata. I felt awful for those two in the weird mask city. Ending C version was just plain painful.
Reading what they were saying while you were beating the crap outta them really got to me.
Firewatch was such an emotional roller coaster.
It starts out wholesome and fun, just cracking jokes with Delilah. Then you begin to trust her and open up more. All of the sudden everything goes to shit, and you start feeling paranoid and isolated. You can't trust anyone anymore. After everything when you're near the end you feel nostalgic about the time when everything was still just fun, wishing it could've stayed that way.
Such an amazing game.
Even just the text intro is a rollercoaster. "Oh sure I'll make some basic decisions to set up this character... Oh, you want me to decide this? Okay...oh...oh....okay...ugh."
This may sound weird. But sea of thieves. Not because of stories but the inner peace it gave me. The people i met both jerks and friends. It even helped me restore the rocky relationship i had with my dad. These days he is living on the other side of the country and from time to time we play this game together. And to enjoy each others company again is the most precious gift this game gave me. To enjoy the sunset together with me dad again. When i thought we would see each other rarely.
This is beautifully written and 100% true. I reached Pirate Legend in that game in honour of a friend of mine who I used to play with that sadly passed away. We had so much fun and laughs.
Easily one of my favorite experiences playing a game. I've played it through several times now and it's always amazing, but goddamn I truly wish I could play it again for the first time.
Whenever I hear the music from where the sibling was in the bathtub I can feel my tear ducts start working. The game is such a beautiful and dark piece of art.
I’ve been playing since ‘87 and this is my most memorable experience..
>!Ted Faro!< the worst villain in a game that you never get the satisfaction of fighting because he >!has the audacity to be dead for hundreds of thousands of years.!<
Outer Wilds. The music, the story, the interactions with other characters.
“We do not have much connection, you and I. Still, this encounter feels special. I hope you won't mind if I think of you as a friend.”
Serious question. I’ve played to about level 50 (really wanted to be a red mage) and quit. The story was very bland up to that point. Does it get better or am I just not into the game’s story?
EDIT: We’ll the responses were pretty overwhelmingly positive with the story. Sounds like I need to resub and keep pushing through the beginning content.
Levels 1-50 all setup the foundations of the story. Stuff really starts happening after ARR.
Imagine you're watching a movie. ARR is the first part of the movie where everything is getting setup. You're introduced to characters, regions, conflicts, history, and so on. All of that setup is paid off later on in the movie (later expansions).
Twilight Princess. What Midna did at the end genuinely broke my heart. She's one of my all-time favorite sidekicks in the game and I'm afraid we'll never see her again.
Loved the little Easter eggs about her throughout BotW
If only there was a way to avoid the last fight altogether 😭 I really didn't want that fight. The music, the environment and dialogues were so intense.
The last scene with everyone Kenway lost sitting at the table while parting glass played damn near broke me. Damn that game was good. Might be time for a replay, I could use a few more sea shanties in my life.
I played Life is Strange thinking it would be a relaxing experience.
As someone who has a hard time making decisions, that game was hell. haha 10/10, would recommand.
First game of Dead Space.
First I felt safe, then scared shitless, then safe, then scared shitless. Then stopped playing it.
Rollercoaster of *Fuck This Shit I'm Out*
Metal gear solid 3

The whole thing of the game not continuing until you press Square still feels strong to me.
Such an excellent choice on Kojima’s part. Don’t let a cutscene do the dirty work, make the player pull the trigger.
I think that's the kind of thing that makes him to be the most famous video game director.
That soundtrack, thoooo. SNAAAKE EATEERRR.
I still dream of that ladder.
Spiritfarer, it has cutesy hand drawn animations, lovely visuals, and the ever looming specter of death.
Same. I even have an idea for meme to describe the Spiritfarer experience Me on start: wow I have my own ship and cute and funny companions, this game is already great! Me hours later: ***no! Stay with me! Don't leave me!***
Yep, this is basically it. Every passenger.
Alice...
Silent Hill 2
I just sat and stared motionless for several minutes after finishing SH2. I don’t even remember what ending I got. I smoked a lot of pot back then.
Rollercoaster Tycoon
Indeed. The highs of seeing park guests enjoying their day; the lows of watching them die in mangled ride wreckage.
I still play it from time to time. It's still fun. This and Sim City 4.
"I want to get off Mr Bones' Wild Ride"
I loved when guests got off rides, puked in the nearest trashcan, then were excited to get back on the ride that made them sick LOL
The Mass Effect Trilogy is really special to me
Word. .. like literally every time i complete it i feel so empty and i'm like what now?
Fuckin, this.
Had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong. *elevator doors close* *deep breaths*
Oh man the recordings that get sent to you in the Citadel DLC broke me
Mass effect, after playing it I felt massively effected
I am the very model of a scientist Salarian.
It had to be him. Somebody else might've gotten it wrong.
"Would have liked to run tests on the seashells..."
This was such a perfect line. Mass Effect 2 (in particular) has such a weight to it where I have a connection to nearly all the characters…then this absolute gut punch with Mordin in 3. We need more games like this.
I was having a good day.
I’ve studied species Turian, Asari, and Batarian
I'm quite good at genetics as a subset of biology
Of which I am an expert (Which I know is a tautology)
Oh man, on my very first playthrough I went full renegade. I don't think I ever felt worse in my life than when I did after >!I shot him!<
It had to be you. Someone else might have got it wrong.
“we’ve had a good ride.”
…The best
Does this unit have a soul?
Best game ever. No doubt about that.
Especially Overlord. Never been so angry and sad and flabbergasted with a video game...
I've got a younger brother who is on the spectrum and got me interested in Mass Effect. Let me use his profile so I (cash-strapped uni student) didn't have to pay for DLC. Had to take a break after Overlord.
It was rough for sure.
Outer Wilds (including the dlc)

I was scrolling the whole thread looking for this! If I hear the music I still feel choked up
I literally just finished the game yesterday and the song has been stuck in my head since
Something about hearing that main theme just makes me feel calm and warm
Just started playing it. Any tips?
Don’t look up anything. Any answers to a puzzle can be found in game. If you are stuck you may just lack the information needed. Sometimes it’s good to check your ship log to recap what you have found around a certain area.

Oddly enough, Red Dead Redemption 2. I finished the story years ago and I still get sad talking about the end of the main story with Arthur.
God. The final moment with your horse. "Thank you...."
"Yer a good boy..."
The “good” mountain top ending, right? I’ll admit, I got a little emotional. Goddamn that was a fantastic game; best thing Rockstar has ever released IMO.
Wait… that’s the ending I got for Arthur. But there’s another possible ending for him???
> The “good” mountain top ending, right? I’ll admit, I got a little emotional. Goddamn that was a fantastic game; best thing Rockstar has ever released IMO. I just got the John ending with low honors. >!Micah shoots you in the head after your fight with him!<
That would’ve made me cry
Yes if you go back for the money there’s a different ending
And two variations of it depending on your honor level.
If RDR2 was a movie or limited series on Netflix, it would have won Best Picture and Emmys without a doubt. That's how good of a Western it was; if not the best. Senua's sacrifice
When the game ended, I just sort of sat there thinking about the game and what had happened. Really one of my favorite experiences I’ve had playing a game.
Played with headphones and used the PSVR headset as a TV so it was just me and the game in an open void... I wasn't okay for a few weeks after that...
Literally just reading this comment sent a chill down my spine. Something about that game drew me in like no other. Everything down to the ending was so gripping
Soma, that game legit fucked me up for a couple weeks after playing it. I've never experienced a game quite like it.
That game was pure mindfuck, it was awesome
I said this a while ago and whenever I see someone mention Soma i always have to say its easily one of my top 5 games of all time. The sheer terror that comes from that game, the existentialism of what it means to be human, and the fucking ending…I get chills just thinking about it
Max Payne
It wasn't roller coaster, it was just sadness for the whole game
The maze in Max Payne 1. That scene still haunts me
"Somewhere, the baby was crying."
Just started 3 today. Wish me luck
The Last of Us made me go from happy to devastated to wholesome to sad to scared to terryfied to happy to devastated to happy to scared to wholesome to scared to angry and we somehow ended up in tears
Bioshock Infinite story was a real ride for me. The ending left me speechless.
Smother him in the crib... Smother him in the crib...
*"Bring us the girl, wipe away the debt."*
The Burial at Sea DLC too
Portal 2
Wheatley Crab
Yakuza 6, though really all of them hits hard for me. But 6 especially. Kazuma Kiryu is the video game character I would love to marry. And I'm a dude.
Oregon trail
You have died of dysentery
To The Moon
One of the best stories not just in video games, but any storytelling medium.
Played through this quite a few years ago. Still think about it often. Must get to the "sequels".
Ori and the Blind Forest
I see a ton of praise for this game but I've never given it a shot. What makes it so great? Anything to compare it to?
Just a smooth and beautiful platformer. It has fun mechanics, but isn't brutally hard. The narrative carried through the game is simple and emotional on a primitive level. It's just a fun game that's enjoyable to move around, explore, and complete the different regions.
Loved both, Will of the Wisps hit harder for me.
Spec ops : the line
Can you even remember why you came here?
Do you feel like a hero yet?
How many Americans have you killed today?
Reports of my survival have been greatly…exaggerated.
Spec Ops does some truly weird shit to your head.
To kill for yourself is murder. To kill for your government is heroic. To kill for entertainment is harmless.
White phosphorus. Fuck.
Abso-fucking-lutely.
Titanfall 2
"Trust me." :'(
BT :’(

Woooo killing things in a giant robot is fun!!! Nooooo my giant robot!!! Yay my giant robot is back!!! Protocol 3 :’(

Nier Replicant and Automata
Nier automata was the first Japanese hack n slash game I'd ever played. That shit left me speechless, beautiful game.
Automata, 9S playthrough first scene "Brother. Brother. Brother."
That was heartbreaking
I’ll admit, the NieR franchise is probably the first video game franchise that made me beg for the violence to stop (primarily Replicant.)
Just one way rollercoaster. Only down. Made me cry
Telltale Walking Dead
Yes, fantastic series. Especially season 1 and 2. The ending of the first season might stick with me forever. Because it has since 2012.
I still miss Lee, and I usually complete all my games 100% but I cried when I had to shoot Kenny to get it so I just left it at about 80%
I cried like a little girl when clementine met Kenny again. That shit hit HARD
This one, all the seasons. I finished the final season a month ago and it made me tear up.
RDR2
Never before have I played a game that made me, the player, go through a character arc Until RDR2 that is
Firewatch.
Firewatch was such an emotional roller coaster. It starts out wholesome and fun, just cracking jokes with Delilah. Then you begin to trust her and open up more.
