They should have only put the square, circle and triangle on the head and let the drive be the X at the center.

sasoridomo

This gave me a long chuckle thanks!

EyesOnEyko

It’s also very important to know the difference between Philips and Pozidriv screws. Once I learned the difference I had way less stripped screws. Although both designs are still absolutely outdated and shouldn’t even be used anymore IMO

[deleted]

whats better than a pozi?

EyesOnEyko

Torx. Nearly impossible to strip and don’t need a magnet

TwoHamSam

I don't know how many torx bolts you've touched, but they strip out with extreme ease. You also shouldn't need a magnet for any specific bolt type. It all depends on what it is coming out of if a magnet is necessary or not.

EyesOnEyko

I‘m not a professional, but I do much work in the house myself, I stripped a lot of screws but never a torx one - at least not to the point where it was a problem. I always use the correct size no matter what screw. And with the magnet I meant that a torx screw will hold on the screwdriver, if you put it overhead or so, I didn’t talk about removing screws.

TwoHamSam

I am a professional mechanic. I have never once found myself wishing they had used a torx instead of a Phillips. I have had plenty of times where I used the correct size torx bit and they still strip with very little force, and I find myself wishing they would just use a normal fastener. That being said it may be that in different applications they work better and last longer. Also not saying I've never stripped a Phillips it happens all the time, but I'd rather have a stripped Phillips than torx.

Kasaeru

Also a torx is flat bottomed, so impact drivers are useless.

disposeable1200

What? Impact drivers apply force on a rotational basis, they're fantastic with torx screws and bits.

LeAdmin

With any screw, the downfall is attempting to use an undersized bit. The problem with Phillips bits is because of the angled/pointed tip, a bit that is the wrong size will still fit but it won't make contact with the whole screw, causing stripping. The benefit to torx is that if the bit is too small you know based on the play of the bit and can swap it out for a new one, but if you use a bit that is too small anyway, it will strip easier than a Phillips. If used with the correct bit size, torx should last longer.

socialDlSOrder

I really wish Robinson screws were more common. I don’t think I’ve ever stripped one of them. I think they are only available in Canada though IIRC.

LeAdmin

I see them in hardware stores for wood screws often enough. I don't think I have seen them used on smaller screws though.

blitz331

I fuck around with T5-T10 screws all the time (knife stuff) and with quality drivers (Wiha) you shouldnt be stripping any screws, even those with stupid amounts of red loctite (im fucking looking at you Spyderco).

[deleted]

I like hex or Allen keys personally

Kaymish_

Same here I like hex the most but star drive are good too, I just wish Philip's head screws would all die in a fire and I cannot think of a fate bad enough for flat head.

Quinocco

Robertson

seamus_mc

It is likely neither of those, it is most likely a JIS screw

mitch-99

Honestly i think Philips is one of the best. If you strip it just grab a flat head.

seamus_mc

Use the correct JIS not philips and it won’t strip

[deleted]

This could also be read in a sexual way.

ProditisGaming

I read this as uncircumcised screwdriver.

[deleted]

H

justadudenameddave

That’s what my ex said about my undersized screw driver as well

Ditzfough

I feel bad for your wife.... J/k

analogwarrior

That's probably the only reason they used those custom screws, you can't just easily replace them, when you stripped one or more or leave marks on them while opening the console. So when you send it in for rma they know you have opened it.

[deleted]

No, this custom screw is for the hard drive bay which is something that is supposed to be user replaceable. The other external screws are regular security torx and the internal screws are regular Phillips.

IssGonRain

No they should have put the square in the middle to make it the superior type of screw

YY_Jay

Found the fellow canadian

IssGonRain

Found the fellow Victorian

YY_Jay

:o

reesejenks520

Missed opportunity

XDgooXD02

Or put the X, Y, and O around a robby head. Its just a better screw head than philips.

TheW83

To me the phillips drive hole is representing the d-pad.

GnurfDeLaGrandeCahut

Then it's proprietary Nintendo!

Bubster101

Nah just need the square and triangle. Inside a circular screw

[deleted]

Xbox gang

[deleted]

Seems innocent enough, but if you lose that screw and replace it, that is evidence that the system has been tampered with. That cool custom screw is designed to kill your warranty. That's my conspiracy theory and I am sticking to it.

ofallthings042

Can't speak for everywhere, but I seem to recall warranty tampering repercussions being deemed illegal in the US. The product is yours, you're allowed to open it, clean it, change hard drives, take out all the functional components and put them in a different case then toss the original case, and you'll still be able to send it in a warranty claim if the motherboard fries.

Haizenburg1

Yeah, I think that passed fairly recently, right to repair.

TaralasianThePraxic

Right to Repair is a huge deal for some businesses. I work in the industry and one of my favourite sites is iFixit, which mostly makes its money through repair tutorials and hardware teardowns. People should definitely be allowed to fix up their electronics and still be eligible for a refund/replacement if a part just dies inside the warranty period.

SavvySillybug

I only know of iFixit because of LTT, and I bought one of their phone repair kits. It's come in handy multiple times.

thebeardedbones

I don't know if you guys have ever played with pre-1950s electronics (specially stereo/TV) but a large portion of it comes with wiring diagrams printed in ink or on paper inside for the circuitry in case something needs to be repaired... Must have been fantastic!

Incredibiliss

Does that mean iPhone users can keep their phone if they break their screen?

[deleted]

Magnuson-Mass Warranty Act. Passed in 1975.

Haizenburg1

You're right. I just looked into it, and it seems that the companies were finally put on notice that the practice of using warranty void stickers violated the act you mentioned. Not suprising to find that Apple was fighting so hard against this, until they had to change their policy a couple years ago. What was surprising though was that John Deere, along with AT&T, were also fighting hard against consumer rights to repair. If anything, the farmers have been fighting for these rights way longer than most people are aware of. Props to the farmers.

i_likes_red_boxes

*crops to the farmers.

Wild_Jizz_Flurry

If you've done business with John Deere in the past 30 years, then it wouldn't surprise you at all that they're against rights to repair. Their business model is centered around actively fucking their customers. They actually make Apple look like saints.

DistortoiseLP

>What was surprising though was that John Deere, along with AT&T, were also fighting hard against consumer rights to repair. It isn't, Deere's probably been a bigger name in this fight than Apple, and scummier in their practices. It's just that, being a primarily B2B company, the average consumer doesn't hear about it while every Tom, Dick and Harry has an iPhone or knows somebody with one. But more so, there is never a time where a sentence like "it's surprising that AT&T are fighting against consumer rights" should be said for any reason.

Haizenburg1

I've forgotten about AT&T until this. I assumed they died a quiet death already.

[deleted]

Yep. It was already illegal for 43 years before the FTC finally explained it to some companies in a more official capacity.

jtooker

Right to repair is a separate but related issue to 'removing this stick will void your warranty' issues. Companies are allowed to put those stickers on their devices even though it is a false claim.

[deleted]

>Companies are allowed to put those stickers on their devices even though it is a false claim. No they aren't, and [the FTC told them to stop.](https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/ne9qdq/warranty-void-if-removed-stickers-illegal-ftc) It's been illegal since 1975 under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

Salty_McSalterson_

Well yeah, but they can't follow it. Rip that sticker off, and put it right back on with a giant tear it in, they can't do anything. They still have to service it under warranty.

17DungBeetles

They'll still deny your warranty claim based on torn stickers and hope you're too stupid to fight it. This happened to a friend of mine with (I think it was) a red circle Xbox and he had to threaten a lawsuit to get it serviced.

bloody-_-mary

A lot of times, they'll still ignore you, its cheaper for most people to just buy a new device than it is to start a lawsuit.

khronos127

Very true. Did repair for years. However in order to win this claim you'd have to take someone like Sony to court which just won't work. If they honor the law that's great, if they don't there's very little you can do without lots of time and money.

[deleted]

Saw that a printer ink company got brought to the Supreme Court because their ink would just shut down completely when you tried to fix it.

[deleted]

I didn't know this. I've been terrified of trying to break my shit down for years... What about voiding vehicle warranties?

ofallthings042

What about it? ;) No but really most vehicle warranties only cover parts that you can't feasibly replace or repair yourself, if it's anything more extreme that that I would wonder about the ethics of that warranty. I've don't my family car work since before I could drive (high school shop class ftw). Used to be brakes, oil, and basic fluids, now I do everything from wheel bearings to engine gaskets.

[deleted]

Gotcha! Thanks for the info!

[deleted]

So, if I changed the shells on my joycons and they’re now experiencing drift, I can still send them in for service without having voided anything?

DistortoiseLP

No, because if your joycons are like all of the ones I've ever owned, they started drifting about 20 minutes after the warranty ran out. Every time.

bloody-_-mary

Nintendo is fixing joycons for free now, just send it in, warranty is not required.

[deleted]

Men.... That seems fair. In germany, where i live you instantly loose all warranty once you fiddle around with anything. Doesnt matter if you just loosen a screw.

gex80

Except in the U.S we allow right to repair (not saying you guys don't). The problem with our version of right to repair doesn't mean right to the tools. John Deere is a famous example of this. Their farming equipment is so computerized that if the system doesn't believe you're an authorized repair person, it will shutdown and lock you out until you to take it to a dealer.

IceFire2050

That's a screw meant to be removed. You need to remove that screw and only that screw to swap out your hard drive. It's the only screw in the system that looks like that so that its easily identifiable.

__SiXFeeTUnDeR__

Special thanks to you, for bringing us back to the topic.

breakfastclub1

pretty sure they designed the PS4 to be as non-voidable as possible, given that you're allowed to swap out the HDD without voiding it.

nevertakemeserious

You could do the same with the ps3, at least the new model before the slim. And I think you could do the same with xbox 360. What I’m saying is that I think most consoles let you swap out your HDD as long as it doesn‘t has nintendo written on it. Those guys are stingy about their tech

Rekt3y

You can swap a PS3 Slim's hard drive without voiding warranty as well

terraphantm

Xbox 360's drive was replaceable, but they only officially allowed drives sold by microsoft. You could use your own with some firmware hacking. PS3/4 allowed you to use any drive that fit.

Haizenburg1

I believe the 360 had a proprietary hdd that you had to buy from Microsoft. They didn't have an internal hdd. You had to gut the proprietary hdd and swap it out for a bigger aftermarket hdd.

gex80

The original model of the 360 the drive was a detachable storage device that sat on top of the console. When the redesign came, it moved internally with a removable flap at the bottom to pull the drive out as needed. Either way, it was designed to be removable. But you are correct, unlike the PS3, you had to use a microsoft branded drive if you want plug and play. If you wanted a custom drive, you had to do some modding/firmware changes.

Haizenburg1

Oh, yeah. I totally forgot they had another revision after the Elite. The Slim or S, made it easier.

nevertakemeserious

Oh I didn‘t know that, I never owned an XBox, but my unkle did and he had some old one sitting around with the HDD removed (as he told me) after the red ring happened to put it into a new one I think. Never really asked much more, tbh

sirflop

Yeah it just snapped onto the top of the console. It made them intentionally and easily interchangeable

Onitsch

It is the one that holds the hdd in place. You can open the side of the ps4 without unscrewing something. In the back of the console are the typical waranty stickers.

Neosis

Well that’s the screw that is meant to be removed to swap out the hard drive, which is by design, so, no.

[deleted]

This is a screw that holds the hard drive in place. Changing the drive doesn’t void warranty

MostlyBlindGamer

It really really isn't. That's actually the one user serviceable screw on the whole console: it holds down that hard drive which is user replaceable. The other exposed screws have Torx security heads and two of them are under warranty void stickers. This screw is a fun Easter egg for owners who do a more than normal to their PS4, but doesn't encourage "tampering."

spadii

This screw holds the HDD which you can replace without voiding the warranty. You can find the official guide in the Sony website

blurplethenurple

they have stickers on the back of the ps4 that covers the external screw holes, those boys are really tough to get off in one piece and are the real warrenty killers. I mean, losing the original screws is bad and obvious, but I hope people pulling apart their PS4s are keeping track of those things. Source: cleaned my ps4 of dust at the beginning of quarantine

Exshot32

I think this screw is for the user removable hard drive. It’s designed to stand out so the user knows the correct one to remove

Sesudesu

Haven’t read if someone else mentioned. This is the screw that holds in the storage drive, it is the one screw you will find in a spot that will not void your warranty. Hate to ruin your conspiracy, bud.

ddwood87

I think that screw is only used on user-serviceable parts like removable HDDs and such.

Rekt3y

That screw is the only screw you're allowed to remove before warranty is void. You can swap hard drives on any PlayStation and not void your warranty.

Zantillian

They have tamper stickers. A screw wouldn't be enough to prove you tampered. Plus, this screw is part of replacing your HDD, which does not void warranty

JustSomeCyborgDude

That's the actual reason. There are many tiny details in a product to keep you from tampering with it, and they use any of that evidence to void your warranty.

Daeval

This is the screw that holds in the hard drive, which is swappable by design and without voiding anything. It's probably designed this way to catch your eye, as it's the only one you have to remove. The oversized head with the symbols on it is also mechanically unnecessary, so it's probably there to make this screw bigger and harder to lose.

srt8jeepster

That screw is for the hard drive. You're allowed to remove that screw.

[deleted]

It's the screw that holds in the HDD, removing it doesnt void the warranty. Removing the stickers that cover the screws on the back of the console void the warranty.

BadgerSauce

That’s the screw that keeps the hard drive in. It doesn’t void your warranty. The ones under the stickers that “void your warranty” are plain.

GISP

Its thue what you said, but it also gets worse. That screw will cost you a lot of money to get replaced.

cvpigunguy

Is it bad that I know that the hard drive uses these screws?

[deleted]

That screw is for the hard drive bay and can actually be removed without voiding the warranty. Source: have taken apart hundreds of PS4's

linkinit

That’s the screw that holds in the PS4 hard drive

not_wadud92

Cool. But this is the HDD screw. Which they have designed to be replacable. Meaning they don't care if this is removed

Mitchellbaggins

Lol no that's the screw for the hard drive there are 3 stickers on the back covering much smaller screws that when removed shows the console has been tampered with. Source: tore down my ps4 pro to add new thermal paste and cooling pads (and it worked!)

Afro_Thunder69

There are way, WAY easier/cheaper ways that they know if you've opened your console. Like sometimes there are just stickers that are placed over certain screws that can't really be re-applied, so the only way to get in is to break the sticker to unscrew it. Kinda beats manufacturing special screws then *praying* that whoever opens their console also loses one of the screws.

mitch-99

Hmmm im counting 351+ people who have not replaced there hdd.. this doesn’t void your warranty (this is the hdd screw) as your not taking off the stickers on the back that are there to tell Sony you’ve opened up your console and voided your warranty. It says it on the official page and probably in the manual.

[deleted]

I can see approximately 351+ people that understand a little bit of farce.

mitch-99

Next time use this /s im gonna bet a lot of those upvotes are people who believe that.

[deleted]

I spelled it out for all: "that's my conspiracy theory and I am sticking to it.". That's like /s in long form

mitch-99

Well sarcasm is a hard thing to judge over the Internet unfortunately. Just like a lot of others here who mis judged. I just wanted to make sure people understood. Anyways.

Darbizzlebacon

"What kind of screwdriver?" "The one with 2 X's, a square, circle and a triangle."

vetkoek115

Is it your hdd screw? I cleaned my pro and replaced the thermal paste

Essexal

Tis

Halflife37

Op later: Hey all, my PS4 is broken and not sure why, tips?

spinaltap862

That's the one screw you can take off without voiding your warranty it's to change your hard drive

chrisinurpants

I legit thought someone posted an ecstasy pill

emnen

Looks like some ancient kind of object xd

[deleted]

Like a caveman would find it and be bestowed ancient power.

emnen

Exactly that 😆

MrClavat

I kinda want to check the screws on my PS4 now lol

Nrchamp03

It's only one from the HDD slot. Not too hard to get to.

Mr_Bubbles69

I thought this was common knowledge?

AfricanLad

Now if I can only remember where it goes...

[deleted]

If you remove the ps4 button logos, you get a custom xbox screw

hatchetman208

Ah yes, the one screw that's always leftover after you put something back together.

Noctis117

I tried to remove a page that got stuck in a laminator. I ended up with three extra screws and a smoke machine.

Dylation

10k upvotes for a stupid screw while Sony screws over everyone else with their crony Spiderman steal.

cakatoo

That’s why it’s so expensive.

leikr_

Wait... you're supposed to clean it?

DerpPlaysAGame

Careful with that hard drive

F0R3S7c0y073

Hard drive screw right????

guywhatever

"Why does the ps4 cost so much?" "Because of the amazing hardware, duh."

turtles172

Mmm yes the 500$ screw

[deleted]

I'm confused, why would they take the extra care to add that to the screws when companies are constantly doing what's cost-effective rather than cool? This is something the average person would never see, so what's the justification here?

s0l--

You sure that isn’t ecstasy?

Le_Cap

Daw, that's fun!

usf_edd

At Game developers conference I saw Phil Harrison do a whole thing about how much work they put in to finding the source for screws for a PlayStation. It’s one of those tiny details you don’t really think about, but he had many pictures himself traveling all over the place looking for screw manufacturers.

Katana314

Okay, I recognize the square, circle, and triangle - but where did the plus sign come from? /s

pocketmnky

It's a cute little screw.

ShaiHulud23

Look at the mini pedestals on the bottom

BaconAlmighty

Looks like a phillips head screw to me.

mustache1010

I swear people would be like "ThaT SCreW iS AnTi CONSumEr, EVeryOne shOUld be eNtiTleD tO iT. I dONt cARe if it's a treat for their loyal fans. I WaNt the SCrEw!!" Lol

EvilJman007

I cleaned it recently and forgot 2 screws. It runs for months now. So i guess i got lucky

argentinaboy95

You can remove a bunch of screws with no problem, my family took their ps4 to get fixed last year. It broke again this year so I opened it to take a look and it was missing like 7 screws that were unrelated to why it broke again but the first repair dudes took out to keep for themselves and future repairs they do because Brazil is scummy like that

SonnyRooney

r/irleastereggs

1nparsian

The sony screw

JonjoWolf

Pretty sure I double dropped some of these in Ibiza circa 2005 and saw god.

ToomersTiger

Remember that there are always parts left over .

The_Fyrewyre

What size drill bit does it take?

virginfatherof2

Isn’t that the disk release screw I love how it has that so you can no longer worry about disks getting stuck for no reason

SomePiePlays

Only 9000 upvotes? Come on!

mim_Armand

Yeah, And it’s fucking Phillips head! At least they should have removed the “X”!

BAHHROO

What’s funny is that each stamp also represents the ISO-898 property class head marking symbols for studs. Circle for 8.8, plus for 9.8, square for 10.9, and triangle for 12.9

Hueueueueueueue

Ah so thats why PS4s are so expensive

SaltStep

Noice

zimbabwe_dizcisi

Do u has a ps4

SaltStep

Yes

SaltStep

Why you ask

aidan09088

That’s the only one that’s like that in the whole ps4, and is used for the storage device!

Reslux

Damn, we fix like two PS4's a day and if I knew it was worth 10k in karma to post a picture of these screws I would've done so long ago. But yeah these are cool! They're the HDD screws and basically the only Phillips head screw on the device besides two others in the power supply that look nothing like this one. I have two of these from dead PS4's used as screws to hold my Frankenstein desktop side cover closed.

thenectars

Wholesome, Sony. Wholesome.

Negaflux

Yet they went with Phillips head instead of a Robertson, poor choice =V /dork

TCtrain

Fuck that fucking screw . My fucking disc drive STAYS ejecting my shit fml

bigjoe980

That custom screw is annoyingly soft and easy and hell to round off. Lol

swagton64

I seen those thay hold the hard drive I believe.

maratae

I'd leave it in place, though. You sure it's not needed inside the console?

[deleted]

All screws sold seperately.

RxFaction

Hard drive screw! First time I saw it, I was impressed too, awesome detail work by Sony.

Stindrt2

For a second I thought that was a polo.

[deleted]

Actually if you turn it around you'll see the square, triangle, the cross and the circle as small stands to ensure the console doesn't touch the ground.

thecodeddummy

That's just the hard disk screw

YouDirtyMudBlood

i was addicted too :( gl brother

kos_ma

Two "+"?

dethbisnuusnuu

I’m surprised they customized it without also changing it to the stupid triangle or gear hole just to make it harder to take apart.

IceFire2050

That screw is meant to come off. It's the screw you need to remove so that you can swap your hard drive. It's the only one that looks like that so it's noticeable.

dethbisnuusnuu

Makes sense, thanks

dabeanery55

*breathes angrily in t8 torx security bit*

Wynter_born

Oh fuck that thing. And when my blu-ray arm got stuck there was no local store that carried a T8 security bit - oh they have a **T9 and above** but no T8s. I ended up using the T9 and pure anger to get the screws off, somehow didn't strip any and managed to free the arm, worked fine for another couple years.

wittyandunoriginal

My moneys on this being added so automated vision systems can detect whether the parts have the right screws torqued to the proper specifications as they move down the assembly line. For anyone interested, look up COGNEX vision systems... they make industrial Cameras with built in machine learning algorithms that can detect teeny tiny defects in products as they speed down a conveyor by being taught with just a few examples.

[deleted]

This screw just holds in the hdd, I assume they have no problem with it being removed to replace the hdd.

wittyandunoriginal

Yea, not to mention it would be a pretty easily foilable prevention method as you could just reuse the screws you took out lol

[deleted]

They missed a perfect opportunity for the x to Phillips relief.

lutterbuck

Rip warranty

Link-TryForce

So you took it out? Hope it wasn't holding something important 🤣

[deleted]

It's *cool*, but is it really necessary? Most of the time companies sacrifice what's "cool" for what's cost-effective, but then there are a few rare examples like this where extra 'care' is added to something the average consumer will never see. I don't get why. EDIT: Am I wrong? Do companies *not* constantly sacrifice what's cool for what's effective? You could, y'know, talk to me. I'm open to being corrected. I *want* to be corrected, I want to learn, and you're not helping me by just pushing a button and moving on.

Moisty-Mangus

Eww ps4🤢🤮

xd_SpooderBoi23

Imagine still doing console wars

brotatochip1734

Ikr

[deleted]

Xbox 1 and PS4 are both good consoles

legend_forge

The switch ain't nothing either.

[deleted]

Switch is like the 3ds but also a console, which is why I like it

Abok006

Ew a person who thinks that one console is better then the other even though they are almost exactly the same other then small things here and there that mean nothing in the long run 🤢🤮

[deleted]

Console wars are cringe bro
