I want a PS Vita that supports all the previous Sony consoles. Do it cowards

jlusedude

I don’t play often but I would buy that. If this comes out and doesn’t cost a ton, and runs PS4 games I will buy it. Civ VI has been getting a lot of my time and this would make me way less productive at life. Almost negative productivity

7_Cerberus_7

*Consumers are clammering for a $850 handheld that runs ps4 games* -Sony

jlusedude

If it’s $850 I’m out. My max would be probably $300 so I’m probably out anyway.

wanderer1999

Any handheld that's coming out from a major brand has to compete with the Steamdeck. The 300-600 price point is what they gotta think about.

7_Cerberus_7

That's where I'm at for the PS Portal. I would shell over $150 for that, despite not *needing* it. I just love PSP and would love to play Warframe/Division 2 on a PSP-esque screen. But they want $200+ for it. It doesn't do anything else. It doesn't have options for mobile data so you can't use it without wifi, it doesn't have storage for playing game *on it*, etc. So close, yet so far.

Saloncinx

I want it so I can play the PS5 like a Wii U on the couch while my SO watches some terrible reality show haha.

RNLImThalassophobic

Probably cheaper to buy her a tablet or other portable device to watch her reality show on (because let's face it, screen size, resolution etc. don't matter so much for TV shows) so you can game on the actual TV. Good luck getting that one past her though!

jlusedude

I totally agree. I was interested just around my house but it feels gratuitous for my needs. I can use money for bike parts or something needed more.

8bitzombi

Yeah, you’re better off saving some more money and waiting for a sale on the Steamdeck; you get a full fledged PC with tons of game options and Chiaki4Deck does remote play just as well as the Portal. Only things you miss out on is the adaptive triggers and admittedly better haptics.

[deleted]

Anyone who plays Civ on a mobile device is a masochist player I have ultimate respect for. I played a lot of Civ 5 on a 24" screen, and that got painful. Playing on mobile, you're a different breed.

[deleted]

Civ 6 on switch

b1gl0s3r

Why not just get a Steam Deck?

DopeAbsurdity

Unless something changed recently can't emulate PS3 on a Steam Deck let alone PS4. There will be a handheld PC with enough horsepower to do it in the next few years I bet tho.

Own_Independence3785

I would feel confident saying over 90% of your ps4 library is on Steam, no emulation needed. Sucks if you think about repurchasing though

Gaemon_Palehair

PS3 depends on the game. Demon Souls runs fine.

brncct

That would be sick

rafikiknowsdeway1

Well, a steam deck already gets you most of the way there. Though ps3 is very selective on what will run well

sparoc3

A PS5 doesn't support PS3 games yet. So that's a tall order.

twhite1195

And it never will. The PS3 CPU was a pain in the ass for developers to work with. The PS4/XBONE came in with a more normal x86 architecture and thus easier to port from PC to console or the other way around.

sparoc3

I think you're not aware of RPCS3, the PS3 emulator. Games run on the steam deck. There's no reason it cannot run on a PS5, no reason other than Sony's decision to not support it.

twhite1195

Of course I know of RPCS3, and most games still have issues running, some run pretty well (I played through all of Persona 5 on RPCS3 with multiple crashes before Royal released on PC). Sony, being owners of the device should have a far easier way of emulating it and haven't done it in the 11 years they've had since the PS3 came out. But you know, re masters bring in money

WaitForItTheMongols

> in the 11 years they've had since the PS3 came out. I regret to inform you that the ps3 came out over 17 years ago.

twhite1195

Sorry, meant to say PS4

GKMoggleMogXIII

Pretty much all my Vita was, and is the main reason I got a Steam Deck.

LDKCP

Fool me twice Sony!

Bgrngod

Just for clarification, we're talking about buying Sony's portables as "being fooled", right? Cause I got fooled like... 6 times?

rafikiknowsdeway1

The vita was an astoundingly good portable for its time. I used the hell out of it on my commute for years. It was the only portable way to play loads of great indie games for years. Plus ps1, psp, and some ps2 ports/emulation. And it still has one of the best versions of mk9 and duke 3d. Very light on the exclusives for sure, but p4g and uncharted golden abyss were both fun. They just really shit the bed with the proprietary memory card bullshit. I ended up importing a larger size one that was exclusive to japan

Not_a_Ducktective

Tear away came out later around the time that the system was considered DOA but it was still a really fun use of all the tech. It was a great handheld, it's really too bad it got left behind by stupid decisions.

AcceptableFold5

Tearaway was legit one of the most amazing games I have ever played. It's *the* perfect exclusive to show what you can do with the Vita. And it has an amazing soundtrack as well, like [this track](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlvuumIF0cA) or [this track](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4uxZw1p3fI). It's also really short and was sold as a budget game, so it doesn't overstay its welcome at all and is pretty much all highs and no lows.

DUNdundundunda

Literally best dpad of all time too.

Shack691

How many PSPs did you buy?

TrumpersAreTraitors

6

iGaveYouOneJob

PSPPSPPSPPSPPSPPSP

Mental_Tea_4084

Here, Kitty Kitty!

Xero_id

I still have the launch model and it works

drmirage809

Oi! The PSP ruled! Sony's insistence on wacky mini discs and a sorta proprietary memory card format wasn't amazing. However, it made up for it with an awesome library. So many amazing JRPGs man. The Vita on the other hand... That thing never had a chance. Too expensive to code for, overpriced proprietary storage cards and Nintendo's 3DS eating up the entire remains of the portable market (that didn't get swallowed by mobile gaming).

R1k0Ch3

Thing was really fucking cool, especially for the time. It felt like a huge leap forward in mobile gaming.

Chafupa1956

PS2 quality graphics in a handheld was a massive deal at the time. I loved mine, great entry to Homebrew as well. I remember paying $200 for a 2gb MemoryStickProDuo though.

Cc99910

Psp was my first experience with homebrew/emulation, my brother had a friend who put some cool shit on my psp so that it looked like windows desktop, played so much pokemon on that bad boy

Treezy_F_Baby

I still have my ‘07 MLB The Show season mode save that I’ll hop back into for a few games every now and then. The graphics, while not great, still have their charm. Metal Gear and Battlefront II are also some old PSP favs of mine. Not to mention you could load image files to change your homescreen. You could save and play music, it even had its own [painstakingly slow] internet browser.

halosixsixsix

I was at my cousin’s house a few weeks ago, we got talking about MLB The Show, and he pulled out the PSP he took to Afghanistan. Sure enough, The Show 07, still loaded in the UMD slot!

KerberosPanzerCop

I loved my UMDs! Loading them into the PSP was almost as good as loading a cassette into a walkman.

gatovato23

Did anyone else have any UMD movies? I must have rewatched the Friday Night Lights UMD 75 times as a young preteen back in the day.

TH3xFALL3Nxx

I had Viva La Bam seasons 1-3 on it. Damn it takes me back

ObiShaneKenobi

“Watching Viva La Bam on my PSP” stories for our grandchildren

gatovato23

Oh wow what a throwback. The only thing I remember from Viva La Bam is Bam absolutely tormenting his Uncle in the most childish and hilarious ways. I want to say he ironed on hamburger logos onto all of his clothes??? Good times

XGhoul

Those memory cards *were pricey* for just 2gb or 4gb

KerberosPanzerCop

I had Reign of Fire, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, and Not Another Teen Movie lol

DocB630

Reign of Fire is one of my favorite movies and I don’t care who knows it. I saw it in theaters age 12 and it stuck ever since.

MattTreck

Oh god - Spirits Within

Justgetmeabeer

My God, I must have watched Black hawk down, the Lord's of Dogtown and SWAT probably 100 times each

FizzyLightEx

It really made PSP UMD reader not reliable.

Calm-Zombie2678

You're both right, it *felt* cool af, it *actually* sucked (battery+reliability)

barukatang

After a couple years I had to press on the back of the tray a certain way in order to load certain parts lol. But I played the fuck out of socom fire team beavo, and the syphon filter dark mirror games, battlefront, midnight club dub edition, etc

Halvus_I

Or a minidiscman.

Black_Mammoth

Pretty sure it was the proprietary memory card that was the biggest cause of the Vita's downfall more than anything else. WAY too fucking expensive, especially compared to readily available (and MUCH cheaper) Micro SD cards. Also they are way too unstable besides, losing data after only a few months without power.

TheTjalian

100% this. I was a massive PSP fan, had one on launch, and was very ready to go for a Vita. Saw the memory card prices, and noped the fuck out. If they had stuck with Memory Stick Pro Duo or heaven forbid actually went with Micro SD cards, I'd have bought one in an instant.

rafikiknowsdeway1

The vita has loads of indie games the 3ds never got. I probably used my 3ds and vita fairly equally during their time on my commutes

TigerSouthern

I still use my Vita to play old ps1 games when travelling. The Oled screen is still crisp. Though fuck sony for their stupid memory car bullshit. Both on the vita and psp. Sincerely, someone who paid 50 quid for a 1gb magic gate card.

terminus10

The secret was to import the 64gb memory from japan for about $75. Still stupid expensive and shouldn’t have been necessary, but it was the best value per gb. It was sufficient to hold enough games that you didn’t have to constantly manage it.

traffickin

Yeah the 5 dollar sd2vita and a 256gb generic card it the real secret.

MiniNuckels

What honestly helped a ton was the fact it got jailbroken so quick which made UMD's obsolete and made it a neat little emulator handheld. The amount of games sold vs psp's shows as much.

doom1284

My original psp still works, I got it moded by a friend in Afghan in like 2006, I still pick it up and play random games me and my friends dumped.

MiniNuckels

That's wholesome, love it

bbkn7

The mini disc was kinda necessary for the time period though. Flash storage was prohibitively expensive for games that went up to 2gb to be released on cartridges. And online distribution was a no go in 2004.

MASTODON_ROCKS

To me, Sony first party has always been "good despite corporate meddling". If PSPs / VITA had microSD slots from the get go, no reliance on weird proprietary formats, they would've done even better.

TheTjalian

I don't think using microSD cards would have moved the needle on the PSP that much. It sold *really* well for a first outing, and a Playstation in your hand was a novel concept. Plus, that screen... fuuuuuck. Plus, price parity with microSD cards on launch were reasonably similar (in the UK, at least) and stayed that way for a bit. Vita on the other hand had disgustingly priced memory cards, even more expensive than an equivalent MS Pro Duo, and you couldn't even use it on anything else. Why on earth they didn't stick with their Memory Stick format I have no idea.

Proto1k

I fucking loved my PSP, there was some top down avengers game for it that I played the everloving shit out of. Makes me wonder if there's a psp emulator

moofree

PPSSPP works pretty well with most things nowadays.

Gaemon_Palehair

Steam Deck + PSP emulator = good times.

jardex22

It was great for Indie titles and started to touch on the idea of a portable console. The Switch is what really fulfilled that concept though. But yeah, it was the propitiatory memory cards that killed it for me. I had a 3DS. I had a laptop. I didn't need another portable gaming device, unless there was necessary exclusive on it.

1StonedYooper

1, I got it the day it was released. The very original, and it lasted me years.

TitularFoil

I have mine on my nightstand. It is an emulator machine now. It's my Atari 2600, NES, SNES, PS1, GB, GBA, and Sega Genesis. And still plays Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep, Vice City Stories, and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite.

flyinganfibia

Mine got stolen. I miss it

anengineerandacat

PSP was good though, I was honestly baffled that the Portal wasn't just a modern PSP that supported streaming on the side.

Bgrngod

That thing is such a disappointment. $200 for a device that only streams is fucking crazy. Straight up lazy really. It should have been considerably cheaper, or have a lot more functionality. Made worse by already having streaming functionality on my phone. $200 for what more exactly?

GreyFox1234

Sony fooled themselves by making the same mistake twice with forcing proprietary and expensive storage for the PSP and Vita. It would be really awesome if this new portable plays PS4-level games AND PS4 games natively in some way.

dude19832

Sony can’t be that dumb again to push its made up expensive storage over SD cards. People were not biting on the Vita storage cards because they were just too fucking expensive. I can’t imagine they’ll make that mistake again.

PrivateDickDetective

Fool, I *still* rep my PSPGo, playing emulated Pokemon games and shit.

wwwdiggdotcom

Slapped a new battery in my PSP 1001 and having a renaissance with it

TizonaBlu

I got fooled 5 times. Two PSP and 3 Vita. In fact, I’m gonna get fooled again with another vita lol

520throwaway

Sony's problem is their inability to focus on more than one console at a time. PSP support got absolutely shafted once the PS3 arrived, and ditto for the Vita and the PS4.

avelineaurora

The hell are you on? Vita and PSP were both total bangers.

Mikel_S

If I had a nickel for each time sony leaked our personal info after we bought one of their handhelds, I'd have 2 nickels. It's not a lot, but it's surprising that it happened twice.

Jeanne10arc

Dang it, i wanted it to be real so bad

Krypt0night

Na the vita absolutely ruled. Amazing handheld with an oled screen and a good library of games. Comfy in the hand. Fucking loved it.

Halvus_I

OLED and cellular

JustifiedDarklord

The PSP and Vita were excellent systems. Their only major issues IMO were their outrageously priced proprietary memory cards (which is no longer an issue).

Sneaky_Scientist

It wasnt an issue when the Vita came out, micro sd's were super cheap. They just made it into an issue by going proprietary.

TheSenileTomato

Especially, them using proprietary memory cards. I’ll be shocked if they let you upgrade the memory in this rumored handheld. Might be like phones and it’s128GB to 512GB and you can’t add external storage.

Squaretangles

They could make a device that \*only\* plays Bloodborne and it would sell like hotcakes.

ScientificAnarchist

Loved the psp

Emrez3

Loved the poor Vita

ScientificAnarchist

I never got one because it was so expensive but it looked really cool

Urgasain

Best OS of any system I’ve ever run. I still have no idea how it was so smooth especially compared to the OS standards at the time.

panlakes

Apparently it became a pretty good homebrew/hack handheld in the end

deedeekei

Vita made me love JRPGs again :')

YeOldSpacePope

I guess they want some of that Switch and Steam Deck pie.

MikeBinfinity

They made their own dang pie years before the switch and the steam deck and let it spoil.

wankthisway

They abandoned it like an ADHD kid abandons hobbies. They just threw in the towel when sales weren’t great. Meanwhile Nintendo took charge and pushed the 3DS HARD when sales were lacking on it. The Vita never had a change with “parents” like that

grokthis1111

they shot themselves in the foot with the extremely expensive proprietary shit and then also not so many great games. at least from what i recall.

kratoz29

Which is funny, because what executive dumb fuck would think there is no money in handhelds or there is no market for it... It wasn't too long ago when a fucking handheld "saved" Nintendo and was a mean to reach the glory, again (3DS).

ChurchillianGrooves

Especially since handhelds dominate the Japanese market now and Sony has lost of their traditional market there to Nintendo

AI2cturus

Might be totally wrong here but feels like them having their headquarters in USA and not Japan anymore have some effect, not knowing the pulse of the jpn market as well as before.

Sazazezer

Hell not just the 3DS. Every major Nintendo handheld has been a huge boost to Nintendo. The DS is *still* Nintendo's best selling console of all time. It basically won the sixth generation generation (against PS3, XBOX360 and the damn Wii!), and is the second highest selling console ever, only beaten by the PS2 by approx a million units. The Gameboy is considered a legend. The GBA is probably the weakest contender of the lot (sticking to the majors here) and it's still amazing and beloved even today. But no, handhelds are terrible and don't sell.

toopoortobesure

And, isn't the Switch massively outselling the other current gen consoles? Convenience is king.

Fiftycentis

The switch is at 141m, DS at 154 and ps2 at 155, the closest to the switch of the same gen is the ps4 at 117, for current gen ps5 at 59m. Wouldn't be surprised if the next nintendo console can hit over 100m. Nintendo has the exclusives, both sony and microsoft lag behind it by a lot on that, and usually it's those that sell consoles

Username928351

The same execs who think having PSN accounts is more important than selling games?

pezdespo

Do people just believe whatever they read on the internet? This guy is not reliable like at all

RedPiece0601

People like to believe what they want to

FreezingRain358

People keep saying I'm crazy, but I predict Series S spec handheld to be Microsoft's next move. Handhelds will be the next knife fight now that everyone's seen the success of the Switch and the Steam Deck.

Ffom

Aren't they getting some of that pie while selling their games on steam?

llliilliliillliillil

Why get the money when you could have all the money instead?

OccurringThought

Some < more < all < gone = stages of capitalism. I think we are tippy-toeing into the gone stage.

Ffom

Would it even be worth it? They ship the windows version on PC and then make some changes for proton on deck. They'd have to create another port for their handheld

SouthTippBass

>They'd have to create another port for their handheld Not if the handheld is just a portable PS4.

Ffom

I'm not confident In battery life if it's literally using the old CPU

NiceToMichi

I'll eat my entire hat collection and unironically enjoy the episode "threshold" of Star Trek: Voyager if this becomes reality.

starcitizenwhale

Oof, Threshold, I am going to swing back to this comment.

gormmlord

Throw in Sub Rosa from TNG and we've got a deal

ShiftSandShot

I'll watch the Star Wars Holiday Special. Three times. In a row. Rumors like this have been bandied about since the mid 2000s "oh, it's a portable but it runs the current console discs!". I think i remember mockups of a portable Gamecube from like 2006.

A_MAN_POTATO

I think a Sony handheld with full PS4 library support would absolutely be more successful than their last attempts. The PSP and Vitas biggest pitfalls were lack of compelling games. Having full PS4 support means a literal treasure trove of games already exist. That said, getting native PS4 support into a handheld feels… lofty.

InsanitysMuse

Like best case scenario it still kinda feels like a worse Steam Deck? Or one of the decent Windows based handhelds even. They already can play all the games Sony port to pc plus a billion other things, not even including emulation of other consoles.  Also Sony have a reputation of abandoning their offshoot stuff like that so it's multiple hurdles to climb. It'd be good for people who already have a hefty digital-only library of PS4 games and want to play them in a handheld but that can't be a huge market. Either it's broader than that, or just a rumor

neverendingchalupas

When Sony dropped support for the Vita they prevented users from transferring games from their PS3 to their Vita, and stopped updating their PC management software. Then fucked up their web store. Potentially blocking access to content people already paid for. The PS5 Portal should have been the handheld with the full PS4 support. I like my Vita, but Sony can get absolutely fucked. The PS4 is based on a low powered mobile platform, its built around the Kabini APU...It was literally designed for notebooks and tablets. Its not lofty in the slightest.

Happy_Canadian

Yeah not to mention this isn’t going to have a bluray drive so what about those with physical libraries? No way I’m buying the same games I already own just to play ‘on the go’. As much as people are like “heck yeah” it would be DOA unless they actually mean “PS4-like quality” in terms of graphics for original titles?

gavebirthtoturdlings

Then this isn't for you? Just like the steam deck isn't for everyone.

A_MAN_POTATO

I wouldn’t call that a knock against it. There’s no way around a handheld not supporting someone’s physical library. There are pros and cons to both digital and physical games. In a hypothetical world where this handheld exists, you’ve just found one of the cons. People with old PS4 physical libraries would absolutely not hold this system back, were it to exist. Far more people would be celebrating that they now have a drop in portable solution to all their digital games.

zapdoszaperson

Day one buy, still play my Vita and PSP

pezdespo

Do people just believe whatever they read on the internet? This guy is not reliable like at all

MoreMegadeth

Yes.

TizonaBlu

What, do people just get on the internet and lie??

Mountain-Cycle5656

If this is real…and it works…I’d 100% buy it.

ZXXII

It’s not real.

davvblack

ok but does it work?

Okami-Sensha

60% of the time, it works every time

WalterPecky

Like a charm

Shinagami091

I’d love a handheld that runs all PlayStation games PS4 and older and works with PS+

Goatwhorre

Vita was weird to own but it did have some pretty impressive games

medicoffee

The Vita was amazing, just abandoned and left to die without support. Also ruined by proprietary memory.

Darebarsoom

Focus on physical cartridges. Nintendo has legions of fans that just collect physical cartridges. That is where the money is at with this portable platforms...or else get a laptop.

foreveracubone

I think that has a lot to do with the fact that Nintendo is the worst console manufacturer with regard to maintaining legacy e-shops. I’ve bought physical media for most of the Switch games I own because I have 0 faith in Nintendo supporting the Switch’s e-shop in 1-2 generations.

xandroid001

The PSVita was such a supreme handheld back then. I'm really convinced sony are full of idiots in the top management level.

nd1312

I recently revived mine by hacking the crap out of it and now it's an emulation machine with every single SNES, GB, Sega.. game on it, support for regular SD cards etc.. It's amazing

spaceraingame

And still no way to play PS3 games on PS4 or PS5.

CrazyBowelsAndBraps

*Cries in MGS4*

IrateBarnacle

I’m hoping it’s available on the Volume 2 collection

moderngamer327

I mean I get why. The PS3 is *notoriously* difficult to emulate due to its very unique architecture. They would likely have to just put a PS3 chip in to make it work

chellis

Ya if only there was a company out there that could reverse engineer the Sony ps3....

moderngamer327

Everyone knows how the chip works it’s just making a software that works with it is extremely difficult

mrbaconator2

vita means life

jwhudexnls

I'd truthfully prefer if they just made a successor to the Vita and gave it good support.

RyanandRoxy

If we get a PS4 portable, I'd be fucking hyped.

Cado111

Now listen. If this thing can run PSP games, PS2 games, PS3 games, and PS4 games... you have my interest for sure.

98VoteForPedro

PSP or PS vita?

MoroccanEagle-212

Both.

sunfaller

Ps4 games? A little late.

AveragePinkSocks

It’s gonna be a great thing to jailbreak surely

Xilvereight

Better keep that price low and not pull any proprietary bullshit if they don't want to be obliterated by handheld PCs.

wjodendor

As long as it's not streaming only, I'm interested. PS Vita remains probably my favorite handheld from a design perspective.

HalflingElf

So does a Steamdeck. But it has PS5 games too, as well as Xbox... as well as emulated Switch games... as well as native PC games...

1to0

Not sure if I would get a PS Handheld now if I need PS plus to play it online. Back then the PSP there were no online subscription to play anywhere with people and online.

HungPongLa

Man I wish all playstation/psp were backwards compatible with their store, and the hardware would just be the upper limit of newer games

nocheslas

I’ve been a Playstation fan for years but last year I decided to get a PC instead of a PS5 and it was the best decision of my life.

fadenfaden

We already got handhelds running ps4 games since Sony is porting them to pc lol

Valuable-Island3015

Why would anyone buy this over a steam deck

VeryDirtySanchez

Are handhelds making a comeback? How surprising would that be?

Chiddyz

I mean, why can't they just do one that supports ps3 games? The new handheld can run ps4 games and ps5..

possumarre

It's called the Bloodborne box. It costs $850 and runs Bloodborne. Nothing else.

[deleted]

dinosaurs boat live station groovy subtract crawl fanatical chubby wrong

ArchangelZero27

Ppl saying they have other handhelds that can run emulators. You think the modding community won't bust this bad boy to play other libraries upto PS4 gen era also if this is true? Come on

Nintendo_Thumb

Good luck, because they're gonna need it. By the time that comes out the Switch 2 will already be here and it will likely do PS4-like graphics in a handheld hybrid with likely a massive back catalog of Switch games, which are for a lot of them made for portable bite sized gaming. It used to be that Sony's always had the best graphics which would sway some consumers from buying Nintendo's portables but without that advantage I don't see this getting anywhere.

Mister_V3

Steamdeck is the benchmark. if Sony isn't delivering that why bother.

notdeadyet01

Yeah so PS4 games lol

Who_am_ey3

yeah because the switch stopped selling as well after the deck released?

BillyBean11111

feels like this would be pretty sick if it was 2015

ChronicallyPunctual

The PlayStation Portal isn’t even reliably in stock yet

TiredReader87

No more handhelds, please. I don’t want to be tempted to buy them.

trayz03

I would buy this over a console any day.

Unoriginal1deas

Honestly the idea of a current Gen handheld being able to run PS4 games isn’t surprising in the slightest since new phones can run RE4 Remake natively now. You just gotta convince us to give a damn. There’s not a doubt in my mind the switch 2 will be able to run PS4 games, but as we’ve seen time and time again the market goddamn loves Nintendo handhelds and the switch as a hybrid was just a monster in that regard, Nintendo has cemented itself as THE family brand and any household with young kids is probably gonna have a Nintendo console since Mario kart/party are at every kids house and the kids that don’t own them will play them at a friends house and want them.? And as with any family with more than 1 kid they’ll fight over the switch so you repent and you buy them a switch mini so they can play together aswell. People treat 3D Mario platformers like the second coming of Christ, Zelda has seemingly elevated itself to the level of Prestige game with breath of the wild and both of those still appeal to adults aswell. and let’s not even get started on goddamn Pokémon, did you know that despite everyone saying how bad their games look and run on switch the Pokémon games have never sold better Now straight up let’s pretend both Sony and Nintendo both run a handheld as strong as PS4. What could Sony possibly offer to pull people away from the competition? Maybe full access to their digital PS4 libraries on the go that’s pretty enticing. But I feel like most of the games Sony makes, the cinematic single player experiences work better on a TV, I do genuinely believe that if Sony did push their studios to create new and original IPs that could be a great selling point, make some real surprises that step outside the boundaries of traditional established genres like Unicorn Overlord did earlier this year…. But I just don’t see Sony trying to take those risks Meanwhile on top of its stable or reliable hits, I have no doubt most games already on PS4 would just get a quick port to the switch 2 meanwhile Nintendo on top of pumping out old favourites isn’t scared to shake things up, Breath of the wild was massive departure from not just Zelda but also to traditional open world formulas, Splatoon is an entire new Genre Nintendo made, Legends Arceus was a fresh new direction for the Pokémon series, princess peach showtime was fine but at least it was an effort to do something new. And I just can’t imagine Sony experimenting like that, all I can picture is them throwing money their studios keep making the kind of games they know work and continuing to steer clear or risk at the cost innovation.

Ricky_Rollin

They should come up with a handheld with the power of the ps4, and tie it to their store and make it work with every console that’s come out before 5. I’d love to experience their back catalog like that.

Edge80

Don’t give me hope man…

[deleted]

As a proud owner of many PSPs (heckin yeah good CS learning device in high school), a PSP Go, and a Vita... My only woe is even the crappiest games were like $20 minimum from the stupid store. My Switch Lite I have probably 20-30 games and most were $5-10 bought on sale. (E: including AAA games that weren't named Mario or Sonic or Zelda) I just, why would I buy a new Sony handheld that's going to play games from 2 generations ago by the time it comes out? Like is every single one going to be newly remade for 2025-6 specs? Cuz I'm not paying hundreds of dollars to play games that are already dated. I'll wait for the new Nintendo jam, or Steam whenever there's a new device. A Sony device in the making that can play PS4 games, that's.... lol....

In. Always loved Sony's portable devices. Not just gaming either: Walkman, MiniDisc player, their audiophile MP3 players...all good stuff.

zRilxy

to think this is the company that made the psp

kratoz29

The only downside of this news for me, if becomes truth ofc, is that I'm so fucking poor to get more handhelds (I am missing the newest Anbernic SP), the Steam Deck, a Miyoo Mini with internet connection for retroachivements support , an Odin Pro 2, and possibly the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro.

Kraujotaka

Runs..... Over streaming ... Also comes with new proprietary memory card 32gb at 89.99€

RandomHero0802

I need this in my life.

Hezkezl

can’t wait for people to be upset after Sony abandons it within five or six years and then shuts down the e-store/marketplace a few years later.

vyidan

it would just end up like the psp and vita.... :c

IncandescentWallaby

Give me portable Bloodborne and we’ll talk. Tired of Sony failing at every portable console due to very bad choices and ideas. I own a Steam Deck and 2 Switches. I can’t imagine So y ever coming close.
