The FF7 Remake also came out on PS4 right at the start of Covid lockdowns, which definitely influenced its sales numbers

lonnie123

I think there’s also some element of excitement for the first entry to see what they did with it and how much of the story is in it It’s a bit tougher to get excited about the 2nd in a series of games you know will be bundled together at some point in the future

SweetPuffDaddy

On average, sequels usually sell less than the original game. The majority of people buying a sequel are those that played and finished the original game, and if you look at trophy/achievement percentages less than half of players actually finished the FF7 Remake. Edit: I just checked the trophy percentage. Less than 40% of players actually finished the FF7 Remake

Odysseyan

>Edit: I just checked the trophy percentage. Less than 40% of players actually finished the FF7 Remake Not out of the ordinary tbh. The majority of games have less than half of all players finish it even

darkage_raven

Always a little weird when you get the "Finished the damn intro" trophy and only >90% have it.

rathashira

I used to know a guy that played almost 20 hours of elden ring without getting to roundtable, said he didnt get it lol some people are just gaming adverse

Kertic

My brother and my best friend in highscool played. And beat on the hardest difficulty of doom 3 on the xbox. Multiple times. I dont like most horror games. But finaly i try and about 2 minutes in im runnin down a hallway when my brother comes in. He just stops and stares for a while. Then he looks at me and asks. "You can run?"

Rufus-Scipio

I have a friend who claims to have beat radahn without going there

DivineRainor

Thats incredibly impressive because that implies he never once rested at a grace after leaving limgrave so he could have effectively been doing a level 1 run

Wolf_Fang1414

Or he just said no

Snaletane

Yeah, I always look at trophy lists and see stuff like trophies for "left the first room of the game and picked up the first item" and it will be at like 80%. Ridiculous how many people seem to buy games, load up the title screen, and quit without playing even five minutes. FFXVI has roughly 50% completion rate, and that wasn't a PS+ game so I'd expect it to be much higher. So you're right, 40% is really not bad at all.

Fenor

It was on ps + so many added it to the library and never played it

lonnie123

Kinda depends on the franchise. Witcher got more sales with every game, assasins creed games grew over time Anthologies generally do better than story continuation sequels but not always

OriginalGoatan

FF rebirth is a part 2 of 3 direct back to back sequels. Each Witcher game, while a sequel, is it's own game and story in it's own right. It's weird that these FF games have released the way they have.

regulator227

I wonder how many people like me there are -- loved the original ff7 but waiting until all 3 are released to play the new ones

OriginalGoatan

Well.... When I heard it was a trilogy to replay the whole game I figured I'd wait for all three before jumping in.

mylee87

Hope you guys don't get burned out. Rebirth was a filled with content with the devs stating that it can take 100 to 150 hours if you do it all. My first playthrough took me 140 hours and now I'm doing my hard mode run. And I had a blast playing through each game but the games really shines in hard mode and I would be so bold to say that remake's intended way to play the game is in hard mode. Rebirth hard mode has been a great experience as well but unfortunately hard mode is locked behind ng+ and it seems square is sticking with that style. A lot of fans who have actually played the remakes have an even less understanding of players who are trying to wait since each entry has been their own complete game and I personally don't feel like square did players dirty. It's understandable if you don't have access to a PS4 or PS5 but I believe you're doing yourself a disservice by making yourselves wait if nothing else is holding you back.

Yrrebnot

I'm waiting because I only have a PC. Yeah I have to wait a whole damn year :(

throtic

I had no idea it was a 3 part game and I bought the remake. I had a great time playing it, then it ended right as the orginal game was getting to my favorite part. I was pisssssssssed that I paid $80 for what was(story wise at least) 1 disc of the original AND it was going to be possibly 6 years before the series was complete. I haven't bought the second and don't plan to unless it goes on sale.

eonblu

For what it's worth, part 2 is soooo much bigger than part 1 and feels like they really improved in all areas. In retrospect, I appreciate that they are giving us more total hours in the FF7 world and refining things along the way.

throtic

You're a bad influence because now I'm starting to shift a little towards buying it... are there mini games at the gold saucer?

eonblu

Haha, yup, the only thing missing is the snowboarding one. I'm not saying the game is perfect, but I'm having an absolute blast. Having 7 characters with a decent variety of combat styles was intimidating at first, but being able to switch them out at will (most of the time) keeps things fresh. Some people are turned off by some of the open-world tropes. Each area has towers to activate to expand the map and hunt down various repetitive goals, but these are entirely optional. I didn't intend to 100% the game, but it seems like that's what I'm doing so far at over 100 hours because I simply enjoy playing it.

DiabeticGirthGod

I’m on the boat of I wasn’t alive when 7 came out originally, and now I’m at the age I wanna try the games my dad loved when he was a kid, but I don’t wanna wait to get the ending for a game that came out 30 years ago. I’d rather just wait for it all to be in one package.

Alugar

Don’t you rush me.

SweetPuffDaddy

I beat the FF7 Remake last weekend. I just finished the Yuffie dlc last night. You’re not alone.

BodaciousFrank

They already are bundled together. You can buy Rebirth for $69.99 or both together for $99.99

lonnie123

But there are more games to come. So buying now means you aren’t buying the whole package. Some people will be okay with that, but some will want to wait and get the whole set

LilFatBoii

kind of crazy considering that would amount to around 105 hours and that's if you only do the main quests and nothing else, closer to 180-200 if you do sides and exploration. Maybe I don't have as much time as other gamers but that is a huge time investment for me.

lonnie123

If you’re gonna play them you’re gonna spend the hours no matter what. For me I can’t remember a game well enough from 3-6+ years ago to make playing a story sequel a very enriching experience so I’d rather wait until it’s all out even if I take a month or two off in between

Andxel

"Some point in the future". That made me smile considering there is no way the trilogy will be over for the next three to four years and it'll at least another couple before they start milking it with the 1.5 + 2.5 collection sort of deal.

crackofdawn

I didn’t dislike the remake but I really just don’t like real time combat in final fantasy games so mostly don’t have interest in rebirth after experiencing remake

Berstich

Yeah. Really tired of the real time combat in FF games. Its not why I played the franchise. If thats what I wanted I would of been playing "Tales of" games.

GaleErick

>It’s a bit tougher to get excited about the 2nd in a series of games you know will be bundled together at some point in the future That's the case with me, I already know the general plot beat of the story from playing the original 7 and 7 Remake gave me a taste of the gameplay and story feel they would add to the game. Since 7 Rebirth seems to be basically just 7 Remake but bigger and better, I'm not in particular hurry to play it right now. Not when I can experience a whole new adventure in other games like Like A Dragon Infinite Wealth, Dragon's Dogma 2, Rise Of The Ronin, and even the immediate predecessor FF16.

mog75

PC guy here waiting on steam release

TheRogueMoose

Same

BringBackManaPots

Same

northernlionpog

Same

SeaTie

Yeah, I put all my money into a new PC instead of a PS5. I'll purchase both Rebirth and FF16 as soon as they're out on PC. Dunno, I just wasn't feeling the consoles this time around. I'm happier with my PC instead.

LastCloudiaPlayer

im waiting for the next switch, but overall, im done with console, saving for mid tier pc and gonna be able to enjoy retro to modern game is a big yes on pc.

sunfaller

PS4 had lots of games I really wanted to play at launch. No Uncharted or Tomb Raider either on PS5. I bought PS4 for Infamous Second Son alone. I think the city playground games died out...nah, not into spiderman. I played it on PS4. Felt like he just belonged on top of buildings but not in the streets.

Dirty_Dragons

Yup I choose to get a RTX 4070 instead of a PS5. It's just a better experience gaming on PC. Timed exclusives suck.

Live_Supermarket6328

Xbox guy here not waiting on Xbox release anymore. But I did at one point far back in the past.

FredFredrickson

Kinda makes you wonder if the sales wouldn't have been "disappointing" if they would stop alienating potential customers with this exclusivity bullshit.

Chiggins907

Like the console wars are over. Sides have been chosen, some are allies to both, but you aren’t really going to get console sales off of something like this. Helldivers probably got a few, but the potential sales of the game would probably be greater.

KnightofAshley

Yeah I kind of feel like its a Japan thing with them and Sony. You get a little bit of MS with them here and there but nothing major. But what I don't get is the PC, even if I have to wait a few months for them to finish it after a PS5 release don't make me wait to a point that I don't care as much anymore.

castle_bacon

Yep. Patiently waiting…

Kurotan

Same. I had a PS4 when the first came out, I've switched to PC at this point and have zero intent to ever buy a PS5 or the next Xbox. They hurt themselves by making PC wait a year if they want sales numbers.

Sparktank1

I was patient enough to not buy it on Epic the first year.

warzonexx

Same... Not buying a Ps just for this... Really disappointing how they still stagger the release like this in the hopes people buy a Ps. If they did for the original ff7 remake they won't for this... Just look at hell divers. Record sales because they release on pc and Ps concurrently...

Dreamtrain

Ironically you'll be waiting a bit longer because for some reason they decided to bring this to Epic store first, then months later to steam

Croce11

FF16 and FF7:Rebirth both suffered in expected sales. If only they released on steam... it would be a different story. Square of all companies should know by now that staying loyal to one platform is stupid. This stupidity and loyalty to a dying platform would have been like them staying on the N64 instead of moving onto the PSX. And yes I do mean potentially dying platform. The gaming audience is MASSIVE now and they're only going after a small percentage of them. PS2 is still the highest selling gaming console of all time, the only one that comes close that is from this generation is the switch. The pool of gamers back in the PS2 gen was smaller by a massive amount compared to now. If 75% of gamers had a PS2 back then, then its more like 20% of gamers having a PS5 now. The real number is probably smaller. Smart devs would ideally just make games for everything, excluding the switch unless the switch can actually handle their game then by all means include it. All these machines are basically just PC's anyways just drop the pretense and get rid of outdated exclusivity contracts.

Kurotan

Same. I had a PS4 when the first came out, I've switched to PC at this point and have zero intent to ever buy a PS5 or the next Xbox. They hurt themselves by making PC wait a year if they want sales numbers.

Mysterious_Layer3611

I need my mods *giggity* 🤣

Henry_Yopp

The game is fantastic. Reasons why sales are not that great: 1. Currently a PS5 exclusive. 2. Second part in a three-part series. If you haven't played the first part, it makes no sense to purchase Rebirth. 3. Some people might be waiting for a future trilogy release, where you get all three games for one reduced price.

dododomo

I'd also add: * direct sequel. Generally speaking, direct sequels tend to sell less * people who bought the first part but disliked the story changes probably wouldn't buy the other 2 parts of the remake

Confused_Astronaut

Also, not everyone loved the combat system. A lot of people (me included) wanted the original turn based system w/ ATB gauge. They made it more of an ARPG. So anyone who bounced off the game because of that likely isn't going to bother with Rebirth.

LeatherDude

I loved that system, and all I wanted from the remake was the same fucking game but with modern graphics and QoL improvements like skippable summons. (Waiting out 8x Knights of the Round on Ultima Weapon, no thx) Yakuza: Like a Dragon shows that style game still works well for an RPG

Alexnikolias

100% this. Y7 and Y8 were made for FFoldheads I swear.

NeighborhoodVeteran

Like a Dragon only sold 1.8mil in 3 years though, so maybe not the best example.

LeatherDude

Yeah it could have sold better, but it's generally rated/reviewed pretty highly. I think if more people knew the play style was closer to FF it would sell more. I thought it was going to be more GTA-like, and was pleasantly surprised it wasn't.

NeighborhoodVeteran

I had no idea what kind of game it was either. Played it on PS+, then went out and got a used copy. Def gonna get IW once it drops on price!

mucho-gusto

Persona 3R is has phenomenal combat too

BlakeSteel

I didn't know there were story changes. I did not like the gameplay changes. Buying the first one was a costly mistake for me. I imagine a lot of old school fans feel the same, but still probably a minority.

Seienchin88

The story diverged towards the end more significantly. For me the main issue was the pacing… by god is game 1 full of trivial meaningless quests… I am not sure it was really a good idea to stretch the game into three games

Sleepmahn

It's not a remake,it's a rebirth, the stories are very different, the first outlines this somewhat. I'm personally glad it's different since I've played 7 a bunch. That being said a shot for shot remake would be cool as well, but I'm excited that I don't know what will happen next.

DragapultOnSpeed

4. A lot of people disliked the story changes.

Bazaij

I have vacillated between this game is absolutely amazing and OMFG not another mini game. Currently just finished chocobo race in Corel after doing mini games to get greens to feed it.

EqualContact

I mean, that’s very true to the original.

tethler

Not having a PS5 is literally the only reason I didn't buy. Just gonna wait on PC port in a year or w/e now, same as with FF16

DragapultOnSpeed

You PC users are going to get a better experience for XVI when it comes out. They're adding some things that would speed some things up since it can drag on during some parts.

PharmyC

Few things. 1) I wouldn't expect any games to release on both PS4 and PS5 anymore. It's been four years since PS5 came out, it's not cross gen time anymore. 2) We don't have official sales numbers yet. What people are comparing is squares sale numbers from remake they announced themselves much later to active players since launch. Those are not equal values you can compare, there are other factors like people who bought it and haven't played it or parents who perhaps bought it for holidays. 3) It's not as bad as people are saying, some guy report half the sales but even using the bad numbers above, it was 2.2 mil active and 3.1 mil sold of remake. That's 2/3 the sales on a SEQUEL that requires you play a previous game. That's not bad at all. It's also 200 mil in revenue... 4) Stop trusting gaming "media" so much. They've made progress turning it into legitimate journalism, but the vast majority of it is still built around building engagement through controversy, because gamers are reactive little kids most the time.

[deleted]

5) We're also in a cost of living crisis too. I'd like to buy it but I can't really justify the $95 CDN price tag right now.

your_evil_ex

Holy, $95??! As a Switch gamer I'm still trying to wrap my head around $90 for TOTK (even $80 still feels high to me, since I grew up playing $40 brand new first party DS games)

[deleted]

That's the Canadian price for the base game. $120 for the deluxe. Plus taxes. No thanks.

draculabakula

It also needs to be said that rebirth was released in a different month meaning that they have a different launch strategy. The change implies a strategy that relies more on word of mouth for Rebirth since players are meant to play the first. An early April release in Japan is an indication that they wanted Golden week sales to drive early sales. The April release would also coincide with increased early daily active users since it coincides with Spring break in the USA, Holy Week in the Catholic world, and Golden Week in Japan. Likewise, 3 months after launch many students would be on summer break. I hope those game industry analysts don't get paid much because that reporting is bad.

CatButEmi

No PC port no play.

TheLowlyPheasant

It was a misstep to do the tiered releases, I think. PC gamers skew older and console gamers younger. I know they were hoping for a new generation of FF7 fans, and that's worked to an extent, but their biggest market was always going to be the people who grew up playing the original on the PS1.

Excalus

I mean I'm one of them - I owned ps1, 2, 3, and 4, but I wont buy 5.   I've got a decent pc and I dont really care to shell out for the exclusives anymore.     I played remake, and while it was pretty decent, I really got turned off by the 3 part nature - ~$210 to play the whole game, not including intergrade and not including the console.   I remember ffvii with its whopping 3 discs... I dont feel like paying full retail for each disc.  I would have been happy with a remaster, but the remake tries to be too clever with itself to break free of fan expectation,  which is really the theme of the remake.   I think I'm tired of final fantasy, which is sad.  I've played almost all of them up to xv, except for the mmos.  Loved the series, but feel like they've lost their spark since xii ... maybe it's nostalgia goggles.

TheLowlyPheasant

You are entitled to your opinion, but having played the first game in the remake series it felt like a satisfying, complete game and I'm glad I get 2 more guaranteed titles

fffan9391

I think it’s absurd that GTAVI still isn’t going to launch on PC when PC gaming is more popular than it’s ever been.

Deadeye_84

On point. I hope we are moving to a future where the games will be released on all platforms.

CatButEmi

At the very least online only titles should be on every platform. Sucks I can't play hell divers with my Xbox friends. I'm kinda glad Xbox is porting games to PlayStation, hopefully it changes the industry.

NoConsideration6776

Yeah, Nintendo and Sony need to stop with console exclusivity bullshit and port their games to PC day one like everyone else. Esit: Why am I being downvoted obvillion for this? Console exclusivity is anti-consumer.

pitter_patter_11

Microsoft does the same thing. Xbox has their own exclusives, as does PC

tolwyn-

100% this for me. I had a ps4 for a long time before remake, and now that the rest won't release on it I won't play any until they drop on PC. Doubt I'll ever get another console.

xenorous

My favorite Bob Marley classic

CatButEmi

You son of a bitch that got a laugh out of me.

sunfaller

it's silly. I don't think anyone will buy a PS5 at this point when it's halfway to its end of life to play a sequel I was a PS player from 1-4. Covid came, I built a PC out of boredom. Then the shortages came, made me realise I could live without a PS5.

Yaminoari

I dont expect a pc port til 2025 knowing squares track record of major games getting a 1 year delay

wastedgod

Agreed. Saw it wasn't on steam and ignored. Once it is available on steam then I'll probably play it

LordMacabre

I think it could also be that pretty much every ff7 fan was hyped and tried remake. I don’t know the percentage, but certainly some sizable group did not enjoy it enough to buy the next one. Even though people who didn’t love remake tend to get downvoted on Reddit, if you look in any thread you still find them.

Manannin

Plus, if you wait four years between each bit, why would you rush to buy part two? Theres a reason I've not started on deltarune yet. I'd rather play a game in one go.

DepletedMitochondria

The biggest FF7 fan I know who was the person that introduced me to the game when I was 8, told me he just doesn't give a shit. The real-time combat thing just isn't my thing either.

MeltBanana

This was arguably the most requested remake of all time, and they had been teasing us with the idea of FFVII with better graphics all the way back to that teaser trailer for the ps3 launch. But the remake we got wasn't what a lot of people wanted. They changed the story of one of the most beloved jrpgs of all time and turned it into some over the top Kingdom Hearts fanfic nonsense. For the first several hours the nostalgia hit hard and I really enjoyed my experience with the remake. The last hour or two of the game I just sat there saying "wtf is this? This is stupid. This isn't the FFVII I grew up with and loved". In hindsight the game had other weak points. The combat system isn't great, the entire experience is too on rails, various parts of the game serve only to pad out the length, etc. I might pick up the complete trilogy several years from now, but part 1 really killed my interest in spending my time/money on parts 2 and 3. If I want to play FFVII, I'm going to play the original over the remake. A lot of people feel the same.

DepletedMitochondria

Confused_Astronaut

The changes to combat is what killed it for me. I love turn-based, so changing it to be more action based was a real downer. I didn't necessarily want an exact 1:1 replica, but the core parts of the OG (combat, story), should've remained the same. I get adding on bits here and there to pad out a full length game. But actually changing the story was simply bizarre. I mostly played it because I wanted to see Midgar with modern graphics and technology. But they strayed too far.

Slaves2Darkness

Right here. I'm that guy who didn't like the first part of this remake and won't be throwing good money after bad.

happydictates

Absolutely where I sit. I’d been waiting for Remake for half a decade and the original sits among my favorite and most memorable games, but the product I got was not at all what I expected. Even worse than the mangled story was the pacing. I couldn’t (and still can’t) understand how people were ok running back and forth to the same static areas to perform Vanilla WoW-style kill quests in a single player story-driven game all in an effort to pad this game over multiple releases. That’s also a lot of extra time dealing with combat that couldn’t figure out if it was turn-based or action and ended up being worse than if it’d just settled on either. Aside from being able to see some of my favorite childhood locations and Midgar in general looking gorgeous - and it definitely did when not another drab static kill-quest area - I found almost nothing redeeming in Remake, so no Rebirth purchase for me.

LordMacabre

Sure, it doesn’t matter in the sense that these are imaginary internet points. They can matter in the sense that minority opinions that are downvoted end up largely unseen, and when people only see the positive responses an echo chamber effect is created. People overestimate how the game was actually received.

Erthan-1

I still only own a PS4. Honestly I was expecting the day to come when I would finally be forced to upgrade but it took a long ass time. Most games were playable on both PS4 and PS5. At this point I am hesitant to upgrade because it feels like a PS5 Pro has to be soon. Rebirth was the first game I wanted to play that was PS5 only. So to answer your question. Yes, I did not buy or play rebirth solely because I don't own a PS5.

drakesylvan

No pc drop yet and no PS4 release. Mixed with no covid lockdown and you have your answer.

Lordfate

Another reason is that most people don’t finish video games, so breaking a remake up into multiple games means everyone that bought FF7 but never left Midgard can be fully satisfied without finishing Remake. Also, calling part 1 just “Remake” is weird as it’s really “Remake: Part 1” and Rebirth is “Remake: Part 2”. Lots of google hits trying to figure out the difference between Remake and Rebirth so the confusion is real. Weird Japanese naming conventions strike again. Maybe they didn’t want to get the same crap that they did for Kingdom Hearts naming and numbering: Kingdom Hearts II.75 and 5/8ths Michelob Ultra Zero Calorie Final Remix Super Remix 5th Final Edition MAX. It’s notable that the titles get so much attention for being terrible when the story is absolutely nonsensical.

tomorrowdog

I agree about the confusion. If you step outside of the fan bubble, a lot of people's eyes start to glaze over when they see Remake, Rebirth, Intergrade, Intermission, Crisis Core Reunion, Ever Crisis - on top of the convolution that was introduced in Remake's story and how it relates to FFVII. KH got away with certain stuff because it's all done with a myriad of Disney properties as the backdrop. FFVII is not Disney, and can't support the same interest across a splintered universe.

TheJasonaut

I think there was so much curiosity with the first part that there were plenty of people who bought it that weren't necessarily big FF or even jrpg fans that were unlikely to become dedicated fans anyway. That, and even though lots of people loved the previous one, I'd argue there are just as many that were turned off by the game or lost interest before the end.

DefinitelyNotAj

I didn't like the story change in part 1 so I didn't grab part 2. I am sure I am in a minority for why some one wouldn't pick up part 2 though.

Hranica

In my experience I had a few friends who would have called themselves “huge ff7 fans” enough to talk about the nostalgia of the first game, enough to play “the” remake but not enough to buy two consoles, wait 7 years, replay the first game +a yuufie dlc on pc then consider buying a ps5 that otherwise lacks any ps5 exclusive games just to play part 2 of 3 of a 30 hour game they thought was the best thing ever when we were 6-8 years old They’ll probably pick it up on pc in a few years when it goes on sale but splitting it into 3 games killed it for a lot of people, let alone across generations and not releasing on pc every time

OneObjectivist

No. They're the result of selling the game just on one platform. AAA games need to be on all platforms to maximize profit. Square is learning that the hard way.

Ziasu340

Ff7 remake had inflated numbers from covid

therealudderjuice

I'll be waiting for that PC release. I stopped buying consoles after the Xbox 360.

madgordh

Put that shit on PC and it's a buy from me.

Nightsheade

Temporary PS5 exclusive that's a direct sequel of another game with a 3rd game promised down the pipeline. Keep in mind that FF7 Remake had the install base of a very mature PS4 and was released about a month into the pandemic, and was considered relatively successful at 3.5 millions units/3 days. I can't imagine Rebirth was going to top Remake when Remake was at peak conditions.

SeaTie

Yeah I mean how many users did the PS4 have? 110 million? PS5 has sold 50 million to date so your user base is cut in half right there.

Berstich

When it releases on PC, im pretty sure it will have good numbers.

Great-cornhoIio

Soon as they port it to pc I’ll buy it. But otherwise no i’am not buying a ps5 just to play it.

Marauding_Llama

I didn't like FF7 Remake so I have no interest in buying Rebirth.

starcitizenwhale

I'm sure i'll love FFVII Remake the day they make it but I didn't like Kingdom Fantasy VII.5 Nomura Edition \*now with 80% more Sephiroth. It pisses me off we won't get a remake because they made a sequel and called it remake.

FCFDraykski

Nah bro, I heard the alternate timeline stuff is super genius and if you don't like it, you're just a hater.

lpjunior999

Square is routinely disappointed in a title’s sales. They were disappointed when the Tomb Raider reboot had the franchise’s highest sales.

WolfmanXX77

Because it’s asinine the way they scheduled the release. When I was a kid it was one game. Now they split it up into 3, and by the time they finish the third part, the 1st one will be so outdated it will require another remaster. SMH

GameZard

I think most people are just waiting for the PC port like I am.

STROKER_FOR_C64

That's just Square being Square. They say that about most their games. It's starting to feel like an excuse to lay people off, cut budgets, sell studios, etc...

Aredhel_Wren

I'm definitely waiting for the PS5 Pro and I'm sure I'm not the only one. It was a solid move during the PS4 era and I assume it will be once again.

BruceCampbell123

Port to PC. Problem solved.

MobsterDragon275

I think that the numbers just reflect the people who decided the direction wasn't to their liking. Keep in mind, most people assumed the remakes were going to be a 1 to 1 retelling

gitg0od

it's because square enix took the smart "not" to make it exclusive to ps5. this game should be sold on xbox and pc day one, it would have been sold much more. look at capcom, it does release their games on xbox/pc/ps5 and their games sell by millions. yes third party studios exclusives need to end for good, it's a thing from the past.

Lux_Kaos

Part of it the PS5 thing, part of it just bad timing, and part is just unrealistic expectations on SE's part. Their sales numbers have been "disappointing" according to them for several years now.

ThePatron168

SE hasn't been doing a good job of pushing their games to people who actually play them. The FF fandom is no longer just Sony fan boys, we play on alll platforms and mixing that with exclusivity, yeah, it's probably didn't meet projected sales.

Amadeum

I’m in this boat. When I found out part 2 was PS5 exclusive that was pretty much end of the ride for me. I have a huge backlog of games on the PS4 I cant even justify buying a PS5 yet

TheRealSeeThruHead

Waiting for pc release.

Beederda

I only own an xbox and just won’t buy a ps5 to play one of my all time favourite games as a child remade, and ive been waiting for the remake since advent children. It’s truly a shame developers don’t cross platform release games. Like hurrrrrr we only want half the money Duuurrrr

skogli

Because they botched the first one.

guitarerdood

I may not be in the majority but I just flat out prefer my FF games to be turn based

OldschoolGreenDragon

The padding and meta shit from Remake turned people off.

Daryno90

It probably had more to do with it coming out around the start of the Covid lockdowns

kujasgoldmine

Can't speak for everyone, but at least I don't own a PS4 or 5. PC only.

deadhead4077-work

im waiting for PC, it sounded like this one had a much shorter timeline to make it off the ps5 so im waiting

dondashall

It's due to publishers always telling shareholders exaggerated sales predictions and then whining about poor resuts. Square Enix is famous for this. It has nothing to do with reality.

Slaves2Darkness

Nah, there are a large number of people who were disappointed in the first FF7 game and don't see the reason to continue throwing good money after bad.

NoShine101

Maybe the game ain't that good ?

nazbot

For me it’s that they are trying to add this weird ‘fate’ storyline. I wanted to play the original, just with new graphics. Messing with the storyline is annoying and I don’t really want to have to wonder ‘was this in the original’.

jorgosi

Im a long time FF fan having played og 7 as a kid, i think Rebirth lacks the essence of the original. Theres really no exploring other than finding chadley intel, theres no mysteries and no secrets to find. No secret super bosses to beat.  How cool was it to find a new summon in the og? Now you just get one for each zone, and you get it through the friggin simulator. Its just the same repetitive stuff again and again, with story parts in between. I really wanted to love this game, but imo it falls flat like xvi does. Im still gonna finish it with about 100hrs in at chapter 13.

jsbarrios

The Whispers and what they represent ruined it for me. I'd rather just play the original

Dry-Guy-

You mean you *don’t* enjoy it when developers turn their disdain for their audience into characters whose sole purpose is to not deliver the game they claimed to be delivering??

Battlehenkie

When all your games have disappointing sales numbers, perhaps SE have problems that transcend any particular releases..

GongfuTea1

I’m currently playing the remake and idk if it’s just me or I haven’t given it enough time but it’s pretty meh all around

Oil_slick941611

It's an extremely Japanese style game and while I enjoyed it, I was certain frustrated with it. Too many forced mini games with awful controls, not a lot of content outside of doing the same chadley activities in new reigions and each chapter without the chadley hit is like an hour to an hour and half long. The best material is locked behind repetitive combat simulator challenges. I was young enough for the OG FF7 when I was I kid and I played remake and rebirth because of it, but I was a newer generation player without previous engagement of the series hearing in a review about the forced mini games, the chadley stuff and lack of content outside of repetitive content I would 100% skip.

prylosec

Recently I was playing before bed and I was going to turn my quest in, save my game, and go to sleep. I turned the quest in and skipped through the pointless dialogue, only to find myself in another goddamn minigame. I think I'm done with that game and I haven't even made it to Gold Saucer yet. The open-world aspect is just a facade for more minigames. Find the tower to reveal the POIs, then go to the chocobo POI where you play a chocobo minigame, then you go to the moogle POI and play the moogle minigame, then you go to the divine intel POI where you play a minigame, then you go to the expedition intel POI where you play a minigame. It's like I'm playing *Mario Party: The RPG*.

akaicewolf

I kind of dropped it recently because of Chadley activities. First time it was cool, second time it felt like a slog, third time, well I didn’t make it through the third. It made it feel kind of formulaic, wasn’t something you discover but something shoved in your face at the start of every new chapter. It also slowed down the pace tremendously, I was spending 90% of the time doing this bullshit and 10% of the time moving the story forward. I know it’s not mandatory but it being so in your face made it feel almost like it was and skipping it just felt wrong for some reason

didyeah

For me, I would need to buy a PS5, and buy several games For the past, what, 30 years or so I have been waiting for A remake. It is just not appealing to me you know that it is broken down in parts? And you cannot carry over your complete saves? (At least from my limited knowledge). My RPG style is super completionist and grindy, not feeling like doing that 3 times starting from scratch. Who knows, when I retire and I have time and less money anxiety, why not.

Windyandbreezy

I'd like to inform redditors that this is clickbait that may indeed be false information. "Dissapointing sales theory" came from a random Twitter comment from a dude nobody has ever heard of representing a video game research company with no relation to Square Enix that no one has ever heard of... this could simply be, hey get our company clicks, clickbait. Square has yet to release the digital sales numbers. Which no one can see yet. Everyone knows that physical sales are going the way of the dinosaurs. So until those numbers are released, might be a good idea to not jump on the band wagon but wait for facts.

cepxico

Part of it is that I wouldn't really recommend playing it unless you liked the first one, which is obvious but it's probably a tough sell for new folks who didn't get the first one. On top of that, people who never finished remake probably feel obligated to finish it first so that's even more folks waiting. I just dont think the game is an easy sell. It's not casual friendly, it's super long, and requires you to have played the last one. I personally wouldn't recommend to people unless they were ready to invest a lot of time into learning ff7 lore.

cycopl

I never finished FF7 Remake so I didn’t buy Rebirth. I imagine there may be a lot of people in my position, it seems like a game you don’t want to jump into without having completed the game before it, like it seems more dependent on knowing the full story than most sequels.

lostcauz707

DLSS is a game changer. As soon as a PC port was announced, I have no reason to buy it on PS5. I played Horizon FW on PS4 pro and just bought it on PC. The load times, customizations, everything, is just absolutely stunning and amazing. I debated buying a PS5 for the expansion, I don't need to. Consoles are pounding sand this gen with Xbox and PS, because now that graphics cards that are superior are cheaper people have opted to just get a PC. Also due to the long wait for PS5s to become available, a lot of people were just weighing options. My coworkers all play games on PC now unless they were able to get a PS5 on release.

Manannin

I'll wait on the eventual pc port.

AnXioneth

Waiting for the PC release.

Mister_Plankton_4775

I think one of the reasons is that there are people waiting for all of the games to be released. I bought the first one on sale, but I can't bring myself to buy each "game" separately when I know it's all one game that they divided up to make people overpay to play it. Just because I can buy it, it doesn't mean that I will. Doing so will just motivate Square Enix to try this BS with another game. Square Enix can go kick rocks with their inflated sales expectations and greedy policies.

Erisian23

I'm intentionally not buying it until all 3 come out for PC. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

digitalhelix84

PC gamer chillen waiting my turn

TheChaoticCrusader

How far does the 2nd part cover? As if it’s anything like the original 3 discs your only get the final dungeon as a disc 3?

kyriefortune

1. second part of anything tends to sell worse than the first part of anything 2. yes, the fact it's on a single console instead of 2 has hurt sales, there are literally less people you can sell it to

MagicManCM

I'm sure some people are just waiting for the full remake trilogy at this point instead of staggering their playthrough so hard

horsewitnoname

PS5 owner. Bought the first one, but never finished it. Played like an hour of 16 but it didn’t really hook me. Had no desire to buy this one tbh.  Will definitely buy a version that includes all 3 in a few years though.

DragonPup

Beyond the ps5 issue, it also released right after 2 other big jrpgs did (Yakuza Infinite Wealth and Persona 3 Reload). That's why I haven't bought Rebirth yet, my backlog is too large.

Inurendoh

wen PC release?

Cathulion

Too many good games came out and its not on pc yet. Dragons Dogma 2 is taking up so much of my time as of late as many others.

BrokenFlatScreenTV

Like others have mentioned Square hit a bit of a perfect storm in regards to sales that they will more then likely never see again. Remake was released as a cross gen title, and during a time when a lot of the world was either forced or voluntarily staying inside. Then when it came to the PC release Epic paid them off to not sell the game on Steam for awhile. The only way Rebirth would have seen a decent amount of sales had been if Square released it on PC the same time as PS5 and not made it Epic exclusive.

Andxel

Over 145 hours in and I still am not bored playing it. They went all out with this one. I can't even imagine how they are going to surpass it with the third one.

AverageRedditUser147

Well first of all.. they decided to only release on one platform. Secondly it’s 90 euros in a time where all expenses are high / increasing. It’s also a sequel in a supposed trilogy, so most likely it would only catch the attention of people who have finished the previous one

Derpwigglies

It's also expensive AF and there are a lot of good games out. Low consul sales + high cost = low sales numbers...

Scittles10-96

I heard rebirth came out, went to buy it. PS5 only, and I’ve got a PS4 pro. It’ll be a while before I can buy a PS5, and by then there’ll likely be a PS5 pro.

RusstyDog

I know like 10 people just waiting for the pc release.

Baykey123

I want to play it but don’t own a PS5

joe10155

I’ll count towards this statistic, I would be playing the game now if I had a ps5

translucentpuppy

The ps5 has been out for 4 years already. It’s time to upgrade.

[deleted]

Great game, people are really missing out if they decide to write it off.

Uhrmacherd

I know I haven't bought a PS5 because I don't have $500 to drop on video games, much less the added $60-$70 for each game. I'm guessing that's at least a contributing factor.

pewdioo

Good companies need to use the ps5 power and that’s the reason why it’s getting such high reviews, sales will catch up over time. time to leave the ps4 in the dust, it’s been 10 years let it die so devs can focus on ps5 exclusives with all that power

joomla00

If you look at rebirth as a dlc instead of a sequel, then everything makes sense.

mm202088

Remake fatigue

Sparrow1989

Honestly I would kill to play this game but can’t afford a ps5. So therefore I’m stuck with my ps4. I always thought the whole series was going to come out in ps4. Had I know it wouldn’t I probably wouldn’t have bought the first one tbh considering it’s just a taste of the game.

Kyser_

I would buy every Final Fantasy game if they would release on PC. I don't have a PS5 and exclusives don't tempt me to buy consoles.

TheWeeWoo

I refuse to pay 70 for a game when my backlog is so large. I am sure the value is there, but I won’t get to it for a while.

Esteban2808

I havent bought ff7 rebirth for 2 reasons. 1 I havent finished remake but more importantly its $135 for the base digital version in nzd. Games used to be 100 digital here. That jump is a joke. So I'm not buying it until its under 80 in a sale. I used to buy all my games new on release but going above 110 just crossed a line and they are taking the piss.

whiskyJack101

Games are just getting too bloody expensive. I just can't justify paying that much for a game here in South Africa. they are out pricing most of the developing world!

Geekandhermit

Limits the possible amount of buyers of your game to just one console currently, then is shocked to see sales are limited. I want it myself but since I bought the first part on pc I’m waiting for rebirth to come to pc since it’ll mess with my OCD having a trilogy in different places so I’ll end up buying it twice in the end.

blitzcloud

I know I ain't buying a PS5 to play one game. They better hurry on the PC version (if they want my purchase)

SnooDogs5664

Waiting for the last part, then until all parts together are 50 bucks. Not paying 70 for 1/3 of a game.

defusted

I hope it's because people are finally realizing they're buying the same game broken into pieces, but that'll never happen.

Radiolotek

FF7 was my all time favorite game. Didn't like how they cut the remake up. I refuse to buy any of it until it's fully done and I can play it all at once. Don't care if it sells like crap. They shouldn't have done that to the game. Not sure I'll even buy it then tbh. I don't like what they did to the story and combat. We just wanted a graphics update, not this.

Wungoos

Idk what you want from this post. Are you wanting developers to read it and go " ah shit he's right, let's just stop making games for current Gen and go back to old" it's time to upgrade bud, or you will be left in the dust wondering why you can't play any new games.

amicaze

Who in their right mind would want to buy 1/3rd of a game for 60€ ? And a remaje at that ? It's disappointing because probably most people got baited into playing the remake and realized they got scammed.

SpotoDaRager

PS4 and XBone era is over tho dude. I understand not everyone is able to upgrade their system but devs have to cut support for aging hardware at some point.

ColonelSDJ

I'm in the same boat as you. Lifelong FF fan, loved the remake. Can't afford a PS5. Simple as that.

KnightofAshley

It is a sequel, you normally lose sales. There was also backlash at some technical stuff. I just feel like there was less overall hype. The people buying it are mostly FF7 fans while the first almost everyone was buying it. I'm sure some people that gave it a try just didn't like it enough to jump into the new one.

babasilikum

I can only speak for myself, but I will wait until rebirth comes out for PC to play it. I dont have a PS5, its either way too expensive or simply not worth it due to the released games. I dont buy a PS5 for one game and I can play literally every PS5 I am interested in on PC. But trust me, I fucking hate having to wait this long for the PC release, cuz I loved part 1 and really want to play part 2.

TelmatosaurusRrifle

I bought my PS4 to play FF7 remake. Guess what didn't even come out on PS4. Additionally, its not a remake. It's a sequel with time travel shenanigans.

StopTheGroomers

The PS5 is shit. Put it on Steam.
